|Chrome Mac - Offline Mail is not supported by your browser||justpw||1/18/10 9:20 AM|
I just installed Chrome on my Mac OS X 10.6.2, and when I log into Gmail and then Settings > Offline, instead of giving me the options that are available in Firefox it simply has one line of text that says "Offline Mail is not supported by your browser." Any ideas on how to enable it?

Same thing happens here.... been using Firefox and Gmail offline. But when I went to set that up in Chrome, I get the message "Offline Mail is not supported by your browser"... That absolutely makes no sense whatsoever....

Same problem here - Offline/Gears works well on Firefox for Mac, but not on Chrome (beta) for mac?
Is help on the way?

Agree that we really need this.

Same here...It is absolutely strange that a Gmail feature does not work with the in-house browser...

The explanation is that Gears is not yet included in Chrome for Mac because of a technical issue that needs to be solved. To use offline Gmail, you need Gears.

Alex, PC Magazine has a different take on this. http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/01/google-halts-development-of-gears-makes-room-for-html-5/
Google doesn't EVER plan on doing anything new with Gears.
My version of Gears works just fine on my 10.6 Mac. I use it with Firefox at present to get my offiline mail.
Too bad for Chrome. I'm gonna have to put it on the shelf.
Having to go through an arduous work-around to edit bookmarks also puts another check in the "do not use" column.

Google will continue to support and maintain Gears until:
1. all its features are natively supported in Chrome (some of them are already available)
2. Google's services will migrate from Gears to native HTML5 support
Gears has always been a temporary solution until browsers add HTML5 features.

After much Googling on Chrome for Mac and Google Gears I just found out this post.
I am another Mac OS X Snow Leopard user disappointed with Google's Gmail/Chrome/Gears teams. Google Chrome is clearly faster and less memory intensive than Firefox, and getting better by the day because all of the nice extensions that are popping up. Why can't these three teams within the same company coordinate so Offline Gmail is available for Chrome on Snow Leopards users?
I have heard several times: Just wait, HTML 5 is coming. However, I need offline access to my inbox right now, so they are forcing us to switch to the competence.

Hi, I had the same problem with Snow Leopard and Chrome. I installed the gears version that Mailplane compiled, and I used Fluid to make a standalone app for gmail ("https://mail.google.com/"). It now resides in my dock as an app. This way I can use chrome as my default browser, and use gmail (on- and offline) as if it is an Mac OS app.
a note: after I installed Fluid and tried offline support, it said my browser didn't support gears (I think fluid uses safari?) but when I tried it, the offline mail still works with Fluid (I assume it uses the Mailplane version).
Mailplane site where they explain what they modified in the gears code and where you can download it: http://mailplaneapp.com/download/google_gears/
Fluid (turn your favorite websites in standalone apps): http://www.fluidapp.com/

After transition Google Gears does not work in Firefox. Have to disable it. Tried enabling offline in Google's browser Chrome and it does not. Tried uninstalling, upgrading, etc. and still does not work on my XP. Will try on Mac on Monday but have little faith.

As much as I like google they can be just as full of crap as the other big software companies:
let me get this straight then - the problem (blame) should go to apple for Snow Leopard, even though the google team has managed to make gears work on Firefox for Snow Leopard? How can the problem be the new OS when it works with the competition on the New OS? You have to love when big companies throw soundbites out the try to deflect their own incompetence as someone else's fault.

With Gears now not working on Firefox 4.0 upgrade, I have downgraded back to Firefox 3.6 to maintain gmail offline capability. Hope someone solves this sooner, not later. Thanks.

That is the best solution I have also found, for now. Firefox will keep asking to upgrade, just have to keep hitting ask later. There is no do not ask me again.
