|My tabs close when I click on them. Help||Caren||1/27/09 5:44 AM|
When I'm reading a page with links, I like to open them and continue reading. Now, when I try to go to the tabs I just opened, they close when I click them instead of opening.
No, I'm not clicking anywhere near the red X. I purposefully click as far away from the X as possible. My tabs no longer open. I only see them now when I open in a new window or click on the "recently opened tabs" links on the home page.
This is a new issue, Chrome was awesome until yesterday.

Wow... I did a search in Chrome for "Jeep GPS Navigator RT400" and was clicking through some of the search results when Chrome went CRAZY... It looked like something automated was going on... The tabs were switching, I mean weird.. I closed out cause Chrome started hanging and when I opened it again, I was unable to access the Chrome Control at all and when I would click a tab, it would close, which is of course annoying... Tried to update Chrome via IE and nothing... Interestingly enough, my day-to-day account that I use on my XP Pro box does not have administrator right so you just can't install something but I know Chrome does its thang a little differently then other browsers... I did some searches and found this topic and I do believe its some type of malware not sure if its a virus but Symantec is currently running a full scan on this laptop... We'll see if it does anything...

|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||menesesinc2||2/2/10 7:06 PM|
I added to this topic a while back and I've seen this issue come back time after time and I think I've found a direction to resolving this issue.
- Clue#1, as others noted, once you reboot it goes away.
- Clue#2, I've only see this happen with my Sony VAIO laptop and can't recall seeing the issue on my IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad.
- Clue#3, when this issue does come up, it happened around the samete that my fingure was on the right side of the Sony VAIO touchpad (the scroll section)
I think it has something to do with Chrome's interaction with the scroll part of the Sony VAIO touchpad. It makes Chrome almost reverse the normal mouse actions or making it that the tab is actually the close tab. That's what I've notice.
|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||Mini-midge||2/22/10 10:02 AM|
@menesesinc2 yes, I have a Sony vaio and had/have the same problem. I don't have a virus and it started working properly for a while, but just stopped working again. A way to get onto your tabs if you have this problem is hold ctrl and the number of the tab. e.g ctrl + 6 would get me onto the sixth tab. Hope this is helpful! :)

Until you clear your computer from the virus, you may use "Ctrl+Page Down/Up" to switch to the next/previous tab.

I used "Ctrl+Page Down/Up" a few time, and then click tab. The problem is gone. I met the same problem since yesterday evening. In my company's "Symantec Endpoint Protection",which has two scan options "Run Active Scan" and "Run Full Scan". "Run Active Scan" didn't detect anything and didn't help. I meet same problem. Google Chrom works good for some time, but after some Windows's lags it starts to close tabs on any mouse button click (even Mouse wheel click, but not wheel up/down and history back/forward). I use Avira Antivir and Outpost Firewall so I hope no viruses.
PS: After I stoped writing this post, I tried to drag out and back one of tabs and after it tabs started work as they must.

I am having the same issue. I can CTRL-pg up/down to swap tabs, but mouse-clicking on the tab will close it once this problem sets in. the only solution I've found is a complete computer reboot. The CTRL-pg up/down tab
This is difficult to say what the cause is, it usually happens after hard-driving Chrome (opening many tabs at once from the bookmarks, for example, or doing multiple simultaneous downloads in many tabs).
I'm using XP Home and the latest version of Chrome (I'd tell you the version, but I'm experiencing the issue right now...! and I can't open my Tools icon, an issue that is likely part of the problem as well). The laptop is a Toshiba Tecra A10.
I don't think it's viral, I just reinstalled the factory image to the laptop yesterday and I'm having the problem today.
Other softwares appear unaffected, mouse operations are fine. It is limited to Chrome.
|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||adolgushin||8/24/10 2:54 PM|
Hello everyone. I had the same problem today and luckily have been able to find solution:
So my solution was: turn off and turn back on my mouse, then click middle button (wheel button) once.
The reason for tabs being closed is mouse sending middle click events instead of left click. Probably some mouse glitch in my case (using a Bluetooth cordless mouse). In any case, try to figure out why middle clicks are being clicked on your system instead of left clicks.
|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||Lustgas||9/6/10 1:22 PM|
I just noticed -after reading on some other site about this same problem that it might have something do to with the Middle Mouse Button click thing- that my middle mouse button (on in my case the scroll wheel which also functions as the middle button) seems to be dirty so sometimes it gets stuck and starts scrolling webpages letft to right when I move the mouse around.
Everytime that my Chrome started to close my tabs insted of selecting them, like for instance just a couple of minutes ago when I was just about done writing a really long PM on a forum site to a friend of mine and then I clicked another tab in Chrome cuz I needed to google a word and then when I was going to click on the freaking tab where I was writing my PM IT CLOSED!
And that PM took me over half an hour to write! So you BET Im Pissed of right now since I dont know of any way of getting back that freaking text since I cant go back to the Message Box using Chrome History either, so except I rewrite it all which I seriously refuse to do!! Im going to look for some way to read my information in the RAM Memory or perhaps if the text is still around in some Cookie on my computer or something or else im screwed.
Anyway, back to the problem and what fixed it everytime for me so far. All I had to do was to hit Alt+Tab and select another Open Program or simply just select Chrome again. So far it has worked for me everytime! I also usually shut down as many unnessecary open programs aswell. But now that I know that you Close your tabs with the middle button, I will simply clean out my damn wheel so it wont get stuck anymore. Or perhaps ill even disable the middle button completely in windows.

Hover over the tab that is open.
Click your mouse wheel down while hovering over the open tab. (it sounds stupid...but try it)

|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||wiedepedia||10/3/10 11:29 AM|
This isn't a virus. Chrome is designed to close tabs when you "click" with the scroll wheel on your mouse and your left mouse button. Often, this wheel becomes jammed and people don't even realize it, so when you click with your left mouse button, your computer registers a scroll wheel click as well and boom - tab closes.
There are only three ways to fix this:
(1) mess around with your mouse wheel and try to get it unjammed (and stay unjammed)
(2) disable the mouse wheel altogether through your mouse driver software
(3) or just switch out your mouse for another one.
This problem plagues almost every brand and type of mouse, by the way. I am yet to find a mouse that is designed well enough where it is not susceptible to the wheel jamming. Microsoft, Logitech, etc. - all of them have this same basic design flaw. It is especially bad on "portable" mouses. The scroll wheel is subjected to so much abuse in transit it will jam very early in its life.

|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||Talmadge.Frank||1/4/11 7:18 AM|
This seems to be caused by a problem with your mouse software (at least in my case)
The behaver we are seeing seems like the middle mouse button is stuck down
I use a microsoft mouse so the program may be named differently for you
To solve this I hit Ctrl+alt+del and select task manager
Click on the processes tab
You can click on "image name" at the top of the box to organize the running programs by name to make this easer
Find "ipoint.exe" (again, I am using a Microsoft mouse, so your program might be named something else)
Click to highlight and then click on the "End Process" button
This will cripple the advanced features of your mouse (special buttons, or assigned actions linked to clicks) however the normal functions of your mouse will still be present
Now, to get your advanced features back just go into "control panel"
Opening this control panel icon will reload ipoint.exe re-enabling your mouse's advanced features
wiedepedia above suggested that this is the mouse wheel "Jamming" but I don't think this is a hardware problem, I think its a Windows/software problem
Sometimes windows gets funny and thinks there is a key stuck down like shift or alt, causing all kinds of screwy issues
This seems to be the same problem, but it it seeing the mouse click and not a keyboard key press
JOESMITH426's answer above SHOULD have worked for me but for some reason did not. Thats exactly how you troubleshoot when windows thinks a keyboard key is stuck, even through it is not.

Tabs closing is nothing to do with Viruses - im getting the same behaviour on a fresh Linux install (linux is virtually virus proof).
The two mouse related Chrome issues i have are:
1. Click a tab and it closes its self
2. When dragging the vertical scroll bar (holding the mouse button down to drag), it stops scrolling as if i'd let go of the button.
3. Sometimes when i click into a text box, it automatically pastes my clipboard contents into the box.

You need to middle click to fix the problem.
If you aren't using a mouse with a middle button (for instance, if you're using a laptop with a touch pad), try clicking with both the left and right mouse buttons at the same time. This will restore normal behavior.

This behavior happens to me as well. I'm on a new Samsung QX410 laptop. Somehow, the touch pad gets in a state where when I click a browser tab to bring it forward, the tab closes instead. I might be able to repeat the behavior again on other tabs, or it might go away. I haven't quite figured out how to initiate the problem. I have a drag and drop helper enabled in the Elan Smart Pad control panel applet. I'm not doing anything unusual though, and this doesn't happen with other browsers.
This is very annoying and may cause me to switch browsers, even though I prefer Chrome otherwise. Please debug and fix, Google.

Going to Control Panel>Mouse>Hardware>Properties>Advanced Settings and set Wheel Detection to "Detection Disabled" seems to have fixed it. (although this did mean rebooting as well so it could be that this fixed it!)
Note: I don't have normally a mouse installed except when the laptop is on a docking station to which I have a mouse connected. Glad it's working now as it was very annoying but still want to know why it just started happening.

Some time ago I needed song info and clicked on the wiki page of Coldplay's Rush of Blood to the Head (nice song, nice band) when the tab closed on me without any warning. Then yesterday I wanted to do a quick research on blood poisoning, but as soon as I clicked 'search' after entering those exact words in the search engine, that tab closed on me too.
I thought at first it could be that certain words would trigger this, but now whenever I try to access certain https sites the tab closes as well.

|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||amiganut||12/3/11 8:51 AM|
I've had this problem too. But I doubt it has anything to do with mouse drivers as stated before by a couple of people. Clicking the middle mouse button makes Chrome see a left click as a left click again. But Opera and Firefox also close tabs when middle clicking on it. When the problem shows in Chrome (usually right after starting Chrome) it does not show in Firefox or Opera. This behavior of Chrome also shows on my laptop where again Opera and Firefox do not show this erroneous behavior.
So in my eyes it's a bug in Chrome, not in my mouse or my mouse driver. Google needs to fix this bug. I only use Chrome for some badly designed websites which only work on Chrome. For all other browsing I use Opera.

This seems to be a mouse driver issue. I am using the Wacom drivers. To solve this issue, I assigned the middle click to a button on my wacom using the preference utility and then "middle clicked" on a tab. This made the problem go away. Of course, rebooting works as well. It's strange as I do not have a middle button set normally therefore I wouldn't have pressed it prior to this problem occurring. It seems to be a Windows issue as I've seen similar behavior in other programs. Running Windows 7 64-bit.

I read on another forum that the problem has to do with clicking the center mouse scroll button. Apparently in Chrome this toggles on / off the "close tab" function when you click. I just hit the center button of the mouse again, and the problem was instantly resolved. This is a pretty useless feature that causes a problem for quite a few people, so I think Google should change it, and I'm not sure why they haven't yet. Hope this helps!

I was wondering if MS or Mozzilla created a virus to get me to switch from Chome. Anyone I do have Mccafee and the updates are current. I'm suprised it did not catch any virus.
Any other suggestion?

If you are using the mouse on your keyboard (and hence don't have a middle mouse button) simply click left and right buttons simultaneously. That got rid of it for me!
|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||jsisenstein||5/1/12 3:11 AM|
Whaat? That left-right simultaneous click worked for me too...but why did it start to begin with??
|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||caver_tim||5/1/12 3:33 AM|
it starts because pressing both buttons on a track pad simulates a middle click.
For some reason your chrome thought that the right button was held down so when you left click it thinks you're clicking with both which = a middle click.
random clicks of left / right / both seems to clear the "i think you're pressing right mouse button"

This is for sure a bug in Chrome. I have two mice attached to my laptop, one wireless and one wired USB, plus I have the laptop built-in touch pad. When the left-click-closes-tab starts happening, it doesn't matter which mouse I use, or if I use the touch-pad, left click on any of those devices closes tabs. Big BUG! Really needs to be fixed.

|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||OppfinnarJocke||7/17/12 6:31 AM|
My laptop has three mice connected when it is in the dock; a wired USB mouse, a wireless USB mouse with nano-receiver, and the on-board touch pad. When the click-tab-closes-it problem occurs, it does not matter which of those three mice I use. They all close a tab when I click on it. All three mice are not simultaneously broken, it has to be Chrome (v 20 here now).
Note that there is aslo a problem with clicking the wrench that has to be related to the click-tab-closes-it problem. Clicking the wrench does not bring down any menu.
Other than this, the mice seem to work fine.
|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||caver_tim||7/17/12 6:55 AM|
yes. We're not saying that your mouse is broken (although this has been shown to be a cause in the past), just that Chrome thinks the button is held down.
Can you try replacing the batteries in your wireless mouse anyway?
the next time it happens can you try unplugging the the two mice and just using the track pad?

|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||Oliver Schoenborn||2/25/13 7:03 PM|
All sorts of solutions; most seem to work for only the poster. But they are all related to mouse buttons, so I think it is safe to say that it has to do with Chrome thinking a left click is a middle click; can't really say more than that.
Given the variety of solutions and their magical nature (like "hover over this tab and control-right-click and blink at same time"), it is clear that the problem is more subtle than meets the eye. But again I think it is safe to say that you will have to find a way to "unjam" the left click in chrome by doing things that involve your mouse(s): reboot, disable/re-enable driver, click places in chrome, disconnect/reconnect mouse, add second mouse, remove second mouse, massage mouse, yell at mouse, change mouse batteries, control click, feed mouse, etc.
Like for me, I pulled out my bluetooth mouse that was dormant in my laptop's PCcard slot (a mogo mouse like shown at www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYvozIP58Vo, very handy for laptops), turn it on, touched the mouse wheel, then the problem went away. There is no way that mouse could have had anything to do with the issue because it had been off for months. But that action caused something to happen with the mouse driver and cleared its sinuses.
So good luck, be creative, and you'll find a way. Let's see how many different solutions get posted!
BTW Chrome is a great browser and this is the first time in 2 years I've had an issue.

When you point cursor on a Chrome tab and click the Scroll wheel on Mouse, it closes the tab. So the scroll wheel of Mouse was getting “clicked” whenever U(left)clicked the Mouse.
the problem is with your mouse and not with chrome or any virus
SOLUTION TO THIS IS:
just simply replace your mouse with the new one...and problem solved
it even helped for me itself :)

I don't think it is the mouse, well not at least for me.
I am a programmer and made a small python mouse input test program and everything is working normally.
I have noticed that clicking the click to go back and click to go forward make buttons makes new tabs of the pages you would be going to, refresh makes a new tab of your current page and home makes a new tab of home. Clicking the favorite star does nothing, clicking the customize and control menu button does nothing and I can not even select the url bar with the mouse.
I don't think it is a mouse problem as it only gets fussy on chrome and not explorer or firefox which I tested on both. Also, the clicking problems are only apparent/present on the actual chrome executable window frame. Everything within the html view works fine.

|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||thetechdev||2/7/14 9:34 AM|
OK, I found a solution. I was using an external USB mouse from Microsoft, and it looks as though it was giving a middle, or scroll wheel, click on the tabs when i click on them. by "middle clicking" inside of a web page, it helps the browser/computer to realize that it received a different "click response". This has solved my problem. If you "middle click" on a google chrome tab on a working computer, the tab will close, no matter where you click!
Hope this helps someone!

Clicking on a new tab with the mouse wheel actually worked, which was surprising...I will probably run a virus scan just to be safe but thank you for helping me fix the problem :3

Yup, it was the mouse for me too. I just unplugged it, plugged it back in, and the problem was solved.

I'm using a brand new Logitech M560 with Windows 8.1. I did a virus scan and found nothing. I tried the methods suggested here and clicked the wheel button on the tab but that did nothing. This is a very frustrating problem and only happens in Chrome. There's got to be a solution somewhere.

I am using Logitech VX Revolution ... well since ever :) Two days ago my chrome went crazy - each clik on the tab closes it.
Today I've found a bit of time to investigate.
First - third buttom option. But.... while there was no mouse, only touchpad - system behaved the same way.
Reason... (I'am Using W7x64) .. somewhow Win came up with idea to upgrade Mouse Driver ... It unistalled my Logitech soft and replaced it with some own gizmo.
Solution: uninstall whatever Win says is coll. Install proper Mose Driver - everything works!
Hope it helps someone!

thank you, been running Chrome for years and this started happening today after a recent Windows update, running Win 7 ulitimate on Dell N5110, restored system prior to update, been through 2 reboots after removing and re-installing Chrome. This solution has worked and resolved the issue had for selecting other programs too. Any clues on what may be precipitated this?

Same problem, in fact it also opens a new tab (which I can't use because it closes when i click on it) when I hit the back button.

Try plugging in a mouse and clicking on a tab with both the left and right mouse keys at the same time. It worked for me, and the problem was fixed.

This is happening on both my MAC and my Windows based systems. In google chrome. The only browser I use.
When I select an inactive tab my active tab closes out.
I have found if I select an inactive tab to the right of my active it does not happen.
If I select an inactive tab to the left of my active the active closes.
^ This does not happen everytime but is quite obnoxious when it doesn :'(
OFC I can reopen closed tab IF I realize it closed one.
I REALLY wish I could find some solution for this.

I think I found the problem, and I think it happens when internet explores is updated to version 8. It happens when I used google browser but it does not happen with internet explorer.
I found that if I press hard on the center scroll button of the mouse the problem goes on and off, like a toggle switch.
Please let me know if it helps.

|Re: My tabs close when I click on them. Help||Raul Boggio||5/7/14 11:39 AM|
I solved my problem by clicking on the wheel of the mouse. It acts as a toggle switch. It is annoying but at least I know what the problem is. It happened after I updated to internet exploresr 8. I keep a tab open just to test the mouse once in a while before I click into a tab I do not want to close. If it closes the tab then I push on the mouse wheel and the problem dissapears, for the moment, but it appears again for no apparent reason.

Just press Fn+ PgUp/PgDn, that would do the trick. :)
