Do I need to uninstall the old version of Chrome after I install the updated version? jules96 3/21/10 3:30 PM
Please describe your question/comment in detail (for example, steps to reproduce the problem): I ran the Secunia Personal Software Inspector and it recommended that I uninstall the old version of Google Chrome (4.0.249.89) that I still have installed because it poses a security risk, Is it safe to uninstall old versions of Chrome and do I really need to uninstall it even though the Chrome browser I currently use is already up to date?  This particular previous version of Chrome is located in my user file folder but I would have to delete it, so how would I uninstall it if is not listed in Uninstall or Change Programs?
For others to best assist you in troubleshooting scenarios, please also provide the following:
Google Chrome version (type in about:version into the address bar): 4.1.249.1036
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
URLs (if applicable): none
Error Message: none
Extensions installed: none

I'ts already been updated.  Is it necessary to uninstall or delete the previous versions of Chrome that I still have on my computer?

In ...\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application there are folders for 3 different versions:
- 5.0.375.125
- 5.0.375.126
- 5.0.375.127

Is there a way to get chrome to clean up the old versions? Should I delete them manually?

about:version reports - Google Chrome: 5.0.375.127 (Official Build 55887)

Google Chrome6.0.472.63 (Official Build 59945)
WebKit534.3
V82.2.24.24
User AgentMozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.3 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/6.0.472.63 Safari/534.3
Command Line"C:\Documents and Settings\Vasa1\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"

Now it looks like the update process stores just the immediate previous version: 6.0.472.63 and 6.0.473.62 are both present.

Echoing the question of previous posters, is it okay to delete the 6.0.473.62 folder?

And just for interest, how do I run the older version?

Same question as above.  Secunia PSI is flagging the 6.x version as a security threat.  Is there an uninstall procedure?  Can I safely just delete the 6.x folder?

In this particular case, although the Secunia PSI warning is well-meaning, retaining the older version is not a threat per se. In the case of something like Java, older versions were retained and some malicious code encountered during browsing could possibly invoke and exploit the older version.

I just think that it would be nice if Google were to provide some information as to whether it can be deleted or not: I'm 99% sure it can but I don't want to take the 1% chance since I'm not pressed for space! But it could be a consideration for some others.

If you feel adventurous, you could start by renaming the folder, then renaming the exes and dlls and seeing what happens.

I just deleted it and everything seems to work fine.  I found another post on this forum that says Google Chrome keeps the previous version as sort of a safety if the new install fails or if you want to retrieve some settings from the previous release.

Thanks for your response.

I seem to have a worse case of this than most:

 Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\Sam\Local Settings\Application Data\Goog
le\Chrome\Application

10/17/2010  02:18 PM    <DIR>          .
10/17/2010  02:18 PM    <DIR>          ..
10/10/2010  02:05 AM    <DIR>          6.0.472.41
08/27/2010  10:11 PM    <DIR>          6.0.472.51
09/02/2010  01:11 PM    <DIR>          6.0.472.53
09/07/2010  11:12 PM    <DIR>          6.0.472.55
09/15/2010  01:14 AM    <DIR>          6.0.472.59
09/17/2010  06:16 PM    <DIR>          6.0.472.62
09/22/2010  11:16 PM    <DIR>          6.0.472.63
10/02/2010  06:29 PM    <DIR>          7.0.517.24
10/07/2010  11:17 PM    <DIR>          7.0.517.36
10/13/2010  07:13 PM    <DIR>          7.0.517.41
10/12/2010  02:37 AM           974,904 chrome.exe
04/22/2010  08:11 AM    <DIR>          Dictionaries
04/21/2010  09:00 AM                 0 First Run

I suppose this might be related to leaving chrome open for long periods of time -- I'm not sure if my previous session was really open for a month, but *this* instance is evidently the latest in its channel: "7.0.517.41 beta".

That's odd!

Most people just have the current and immediately preceding version. I feel you're pretty safe deleting all the others.

I had the same issue with PSI, I just deleted the 6.0.xxxx folder and all is well.
