I had to re-install the latest version of Java. Even though the install warned me that it was already installed - it fixed the problem described by Diab (all vids on YouTube and a few other sites)

It appears that the proxy settings are not detected properly with the default configuration. I was able to get it working by Right Click on the Windows Media Player -> Plugins -> Options -> Network -> HTTP -> Autodetect Proxy Settings. The default on mine was "use proxy settings of the web browser" but it did not work when there was no proxy.

Hi there exactly the same problem as Diab, installed and re-installed java 6 update 14 but no luck; also tried the "Right Click on the Windows Media Player -> Plugins -> Options -> Network -> HTTP -> Autodetect Proxy Settings" but still didn't solve the problem. Any other suggestions?

Same here. I get a blank screen. No option to download, and no video. I have no way to save the file and open it from the media player.

I downloaded and installed this plug in and it works now.
You guys should try it. Just download, install, and then exit your browser and reopen and go to the webpage you want

It's not a matter of fixing my Chrome installation. The problem is to write the html so that most everyone out there using Chrome can see the .wmv file that I've made available. I can't expect most folks to come here and work through their local fix.
So, the question remains, how to write the html link so that nearly everyone can display .wmv files? My html works in IE and in Firefox, why not in Chrome?

Ok, I had the same problem and resolved mine. Perhaps my problem was the same as yours:
I'm using a x64 version of Windows 7, so I have 2 "Program Files" folder (The normal "Program Files" and a "Program Files (x86) for x32/x86 installed programs)
Well... let's begin:
The plugin that allows you to watch embed wmv files on Google Chrome is "Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin" (http://port25.technet.com/pages/windows-media-player-firefox-plugin-download.aspx). Yeah, I know it's written "Firefox" but it's this one.
If your Mozilla Firefox is installed on "Program Files" instead of "Program Files (x86)" then you might not see embed files on Chrome nor in Firefox. Why? That's why:
When you install "Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin" it is located at "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\Plugins" but this Firefox folder is empty because there isn't any firefox installed in "Program Files (x86)"
What do you have to do is: Send all the files inside "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\Plugins" to "Plugins" folder where your Firefox is installed and then problem solved.

For those still looking for solution, here's what I did. This is not real fix, but still plays WMV video on the page. (I am using Windows Chrome version 8.0.552.224)
The fix is put a link, and Chrome would show a little icon after "</a>".
<a href="videofile.wmv">please click this:</a>
And it would show "Open video inline player" when you hover your mouse on the icon.

What I had to do was download the plug-in that others mentioned
I had to uninstall it, not just repair, and then reinstall it again.
