Gmail login...The webpage at has resulted in too many redirects logos66 8/1/09 3:07 AM
when attempting to sign in/login to gmail directly (ie, not already signed in to my google account), I always got this, and in Chrome only:
"The webpage at has resulted in too many redirects. Clearing your cookies for this site may fix the problem. If not, it is possibly a server configuration issue and not a problem with your computer. " and only with Gmail.
Never had the issue in Firefox Opera or IE, it's really just in Chrome. I'm on the beta/dev channel. And please people don't tell me about clearing cookies/cache etc...that's not the issue, and that doesn't change anything. Thanks.

ps: reloading the page in such cases get in to the gmail page, but I wouldn't consider this as a fix :)

To get the best answer possible you should ask Gmail questions in the Gmail Forum http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/gmail?hl=en They know more about Gmail and we know more about Google Chrome.

look, I'm pretty sure the Gmail team has an idea on the topic, but considering that Chrome is the only browser having this particular issue with Gmail (at least on my system), I do believe posting it here is absolutely relevant. But thanks for the useful tip :) lol

just found out the issue doesn't happen when not using HTTPS in Gmail...weird (HTTPS while running the mail interface...the login process is always on SSL)...so yeah that's a Gmail issue, although it doesn't happen in other browsers; lol on a side not I double posted just in case on Gmail help, and someone advised me to come here instead (ROFL).

OK I got the source of the problem, at least in my case: I had "restrict how third party cookies can be used" set on in my options. Setting it back to "all cookies" fixes the problem when login to Gmail.

As logos66 says, you can get around the problem by changing your cookies settings. However, the error message is ridiculous: It gives the user no hint at what he can do. This problem can't be dismissed as a Gmail problem. Anyway, it's all Google: assign someone to fix it.

Can someone tell me (Very Specifically), where these cookie settings are located.  I'm old and dumb and can't seem to find them.  What I really don't understand is why Gmail was working fine one minute and then suddenly had too many redirects.  Thanks

BTW...I got the problem in IE8  .

I am getting this problem, but only in Chrome Incognito. A regular Chrome windows is working fine. I do not see a setting titled "restrict how third party cookies can be used". Where is it, please?

My client had this problem, only in Chrome. (IE worked fine)

We found that clearing cookies and browser cache worked.... once...for that session.  then the problem came back.

Notice his calendar was one month "off" (set to May instead of June).... fixed that, now it appears to be working fine.

So annoying!
At least I can rest assured it's not me - most of you really seem to know your stuff.  Thanks for taking the time to post and ease some of our concerns.
Google, come on.  This is ridiculous!

Had same problem, turns out I had accidentally set the date on my computer to a date in the future. I set it back to correct date, but chrome/gmail still gave this error. Restarted chrome and it worked fine.

I have the same problem with winXP and IE8 (page unavailable) and Chrome (to many redirects). I tried also to set and unset the option "restrict how third party cookies can be used" but that doesn't work at all. The only thing which seems to be working is to delete all cookies and cache ... but just once for the session and  then the problem is back :P
I had that problem the first time 3 days ago.

got the same problem, here's how i fixed it.

click the wrench on your google chrome window (just below the red X)
click options
click Under the Hood
click the Clear browsing data button
on the window that pops up select "the beginning of time" from the drop down menu
make sure all the check boxes on the list have checks on it
click "clear browsing data" button at the bottom
you'll be taken back to the previous window, now click the "Content Settings" button

in the window that pops up make sure that "Allow local data to be set (recommended)" is selected
this is located under the Cookies section
click "all cookies and site data" button
click "remove all" button in the window that pops up
after all the cookies have been removed close all google chrome browser windows
open a new google chrome browser window and try it.

These worked for me. Hope it works for you too. :D

I have the same problem, and found that my time was set one month ahead. So I reset the time, restart the computer, (and reinstall Chrome) and it fixed the problem. I am not sure if you need to reinstall, but I think you need to restart. After I changed the time, Gmail still didn't load.
