All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash Flip512 2/2/10 7:26 AM
Hi, I'm running XP, and my computer recently crashed after I got impatient and just yanked a USB hub out (I know, not the greatest idea, but it happened).  So after I restarted, all of my extensions were gone.  Is there any way to back these up to prevent a similar problem in the future?  Thanks for the help, and the info re. my version of chrome is pasted below.

Google Chrome        4.0.249.78 (Official Build 36714) beta
WebKit        532.5
V8        1.3.18.19
User Agent        Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/532.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/4.0.249.78 Safari/532.5
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash wár17 § 2/2/10 11:15 AM
Can you add the extensions one by one?

If no joy, create new Chrome profile.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash car4dave 2/18/10 2:02 PM
I had the same problem. I also have XP (pro) and think I know what caused it but not sure why.

We have a slow internet connection at work and my boss plays conservative talk radio all day on her pc. I have done it before, I right click on "Other bookmarks" and select open all in new window :o) It asks me "Are you sure you want to open 431 tabs?" :) I click ok and her radio stops playing lol

This time though, I got a blue screen of death and my pc crashed. Extensions were all gone.. ;(
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash jumper4000 2/19/10 6:07 PM
I had the same exact problem today. My Windows XP crashed with Blue Screen of Death, and when it came back, ALL of the extensions and settings were gone. I REALLY don't want to start over again. Is there any possible way to restore the old settings and extensions?
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash jjcostello 3/8/10 1:08 AM
I have been using Chrome since it became available. I have abandoned it a number of times, and eventually came back. I have had many problems over the various versions. I have found one constant way to resolve most problems: CLEAR ALL THE BROWSING DATA (except passwords). It works for me, and it needs to be done regularly eg three to four weeks.

Same problem on Linux.

Same problem on Windows 7.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash nikhilr51 4/3/10 2:57 AM
Just happened to me on win 7 64bit. AHHH!!!! so annoying. I'm going to go to Internet explorer considering everthing else fails. No options left. I wanted chrome to work but has way too many problems.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash legumes 4/4/10 1:36 AM
Just happened to me too in Chrome 4.1.249.1045 (42898) on W7 Ent. 64-bit - my laptop froze up, seems as the harddrive is about to say goodbye.
I can see a number of filenames starting with "chrome-extension_...." in "%AppData%\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Local Storage" - the number of those files match my extensions afaik remember. Gonna try to open them in some sqlite browser - any tips here would be greatly appreciated :P
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash weregoingunion 4/5/10 5:04 AM
I have been using Chrome for about 1 month and am using 4.1.249.1045.  I switched from using Opera for the last 4-5 years after I updated Opera and didn't really like the new version and wanted to see if there was anything better out there.

I have had numerous problems with Chrome and can't believe Google is unable to solve so many of the problems I have and all the problems I read about others also having.  The biggest complaint I have is that Kingsoft Powerword which is the a pop-up English<->Chinese dictionary not working with Chrome.  It is widely used in China and works with 99.9% of Windows applications without any extra configuration.  I am baffled that it won't work with Chrome.  It works perfectly with every other browser and even works with the simplest and most obscure of Windows programs.

I am posting in this thread because I too have lost all of my extensions after a blue-screen computer crash.  I have been running this same laptop almost non-stop for the past 5 years and this is the first time I can recall a blue-screen crash.  Clearing all history and browsing data did NOT bring them back.

Other problems I have (and have read about others having) include Chrome not automatically asking to save passwords to a handful of sites and of course there is no way to manually add passwords to the master list.  Logmein.com also does not work and will not automatically pop up the ActiveX install required to run it properly.  I have to use IE at work to access this site.  Also occasionally when I click "synchronize my bookmarks" it will get stuck trying to sign in to Google Documents.  (Why doesn't it sync them automatically every so often?)

These all seem like pretty major problems and I can't believe Google has released such a half-assed browser.  I will continue trying it for a little bit longer to see if I can get used to it but I think that some serious updates are needed and Google needs to address what I consider to be pretty major problems.

(As I am reading this I just noticed that my bookmark tabs at the top of the page are not showing up.  I have to click the wrench icon at the top and open the bookmark manager to see them.  I just installed the Speed Dial extension about 5 minutes ago so that might be causing it but right now I do not see an option to turn the bookmark toolbar on/off like every other browser in the world can do by right-clicking the the top.  Unbelievable.)

Come on, Google.  Rather than trying to be all over the map, please focus on making quality products and respect customer input enough to help solve our problems.  I don't know how long myself and others can use products that have been out long enough to have already taken care of such simple issues.

Also lost every extension today after a Win7 crash. I am running Chrome 4.1.249.1045 and Win7 Professional. Soooo frustrating. :(
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash Nikhs 4/9/10 8:25 AM
I just lostall my extensions too after my power supply failed. i don't wanna have to search and add all these ext again. any fix yet?
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash wár17 § 4/9/10 9:59 AM
Nkikhs, you should look for your User Data folder and copy the extension from old profile to new profile. The location of your profile depends on the operating system that you are using. What version of Chrome and operating system are you using?

Unfortunately, same thing happen to me on Win7, I'm using Chrome 4.1.249.1045
Is there any way to recover this?
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash rockrong 4/11/10 8:18 PM
I'm using Chrome 5.0.360.4 in Windows XP SP3 CHN, I have same problem.
If I open so many tabs, all extensions will be lost, and settings still in user data folder.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash wár17 § 4/11/10 8:24 PM
rockrong, update the development version to 5.0.371.0 and check if the problem is fixed.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash njo 4/20/10 12:25 PM
I had the same problem using Windows 7.
I restored my lost profile doing this: right-click on the "User Data" folder (located in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data)  => restore previous versions. Then choose a version that is supposed to work (eg few hours before the crash).

For earlier Windows versions, it should be possible to restore the profile using System Restore, but note that it will also restore others things (registry settings, system files).
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash CEV 4/22/10 8:16 PM
Is there no way to save a browsing session? I like to open the same tabs all the time, and after a crash everything was lost. I may need to go back to Firefox, and just as I was starting to like Chrome.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash wár17 § 4/22/10 9:16 PM
CEV, if you look at the New Tab, your last session is saved in the recently closed line at the bottom.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash CEV 4/23/10 7:01 AM
Thanks for the link to the Session Manager. Just what I was looking for. However, this will not help with the OP's issue, which also happened to me. It is like I just installed Chrome with the default theme and no installed extensions. So I'm thinking if this happens again, then this extension will be of no help as it will not be there. Is it possible to back up whatever folder contains this data so if happens again a person could just restore that folder and the installed extensions and sessions would be there again?
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash wár17 § 4/23/10 2:40 PM
You can make a backup of your user data folder. It is located

  • Windows XP: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data

  • Windows Vista:%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data

Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash Wikiheretic 4/28/10 7:23 PM
For what it's worth, I just had the exact problem (blue screen ==> all chrome settings gone) and restoring the file to a previous version as njo suggested seems to have got it all back. Now what would be even better is if this, you know, never happened again...
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash SuperHuman 5/7/10 7:07 PM
Even i have same problem , i lost all my extensions and themes, it happened two times after recent update to 5.0 beta. I am running XP pro sp3. Hope it get fixed on final version.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash timritter 5/26/10 2:16 PM
I have also had this happen 2 separate times now.  I love using Chrome, but there have been a number of issues of various sorts, and it seems a lot of people reporting these issues and commenting on such, but no fixes.  I wouldn't mind if a crashed session maybe lost a newly installed extension - but to lose everything anytime the browser shuts down abnormally (which happens) - that is just not acceptable.  Can't the browser back them up and keep some kind of reference when it opens so that when it re-opens it can check current status of extensions against the most recent backup?
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash dibbler 5/27/10 11:54 AM
hi all,
i have had this same thing happen. I've used Chrome since it came out and this is the first issue I've had with it. I must admit tho' my XP is due for a reinstall. Over the last 6 months I've installed numerous pieces of software, extensions etc and she is getting a bit bogged down. Especially since I've been pl;aying round with themes and dll's, I'm not surprised that i've ended up breaking something. Put an hour or two aside ppz and do your puta and yourself a favour and clean reinstall!!!!
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash dibbler 5/27/10 11:57 AM
@njo
I tried r/clicking the user data folder but never got an option to "restore previous version" option...anyone else have any luck??
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash loulou777 5/27/10 4:20 PM
njo - you hit it on the nail.  I was able to recover all my extensions and specially one with my very important notes.  God bless you my friend!
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash Peter Wilds 8/21/10 2:47 AM
Once again I have lost all my extensions! Joy. This has happened to me at least four times now.

When this happened the last time I reinstalled all the extensions one by one from the gallery, then I found the extensions folder (thanks njo, above!) and saved them elsewhere in case this happened again. Seems like it ought to work, right? Wrong!

When I pasted them into the empty extensions folder, they didn't appear when I next opened Chrome. Then when I closed everything and went back to the extensions folder in the user data folder, the extensions I'd pasted in had disappeared. So, how do I get them to appear in Chrome?  I'm at a loss. I love Chrome but this disappearing extensions lark is getting old.

njo - when I right click on the "User Data" folder, I don't see any option to restore previous versions. Where am I supposed to be looking? I'm using WinXP. Thanks.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash crusos 11/2/10 1:59 PM
the same problem here : when windows XP crashes then Chrome looses herself. I come around this so many times (old pc). My solution: if u have two or more computers and u are using chrome on them, then just keep them sync.  If one is crashed then try options/personal stuff/start sync and that's it (for this time)

hope this help
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash Richard_ 12/3/10 3:52 AM
This is just poor design ... no good reason for this to happen .. it should never happen. Worst case .. you might lose your last change .. running Windows 7 on an Dell XPS kick ass system .. this has happened to me a few times .. lost all my extensions .. a REAL PAIN
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash Richard_ 12/3/10 3:53 AM
I don't see anyone from Google checking this thread ... mmm .. not good
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash billybag 12/9/10 6:31 PM
Wow. This just happened to me. Didn't realize its been a problem for a while now... Does google read these, orrrr.....? Their is not fucking reason this should happen. I mean, i am so pissed right now. Ive used chrome since it first came out but just now uninstalled it. Poor choice, google. Try checking your threads once and a while.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash wár17 § 12/9/10 7:31 PM
The computer crash is corrupting your profile. If you back up your profile, then you can manually restore it. Your extensions will return.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash Mpad 12/12/10 9:28 AM
So, what to do?  Does Google care?
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash nimbostratue 1/9/11 1:55 PM
What a fucking problem, I lost my extensions, application. This is the second time it happens to me, and it really took me quite a lot  of time to add those extensions and apps :( . I shall switch back again to firefox.

I check Google Help and they say you can back things up, but I guess instead they should fix this annoying problem,
If your browser user profile is corrupted, you can create a new user profile to replace the broken one:

Exit Google Chrome completely.
Go to the Start menu > Run.
Enter one of the following directories in the text field, then press OK.
Windows XP: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data
Windows 7 or Windows Vista: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data
Locate the folder called "Default" in the directory window that opens and rename it as "Backup default."
Try opening Google Chrome again. A new "Default" folder is automatically created as you start using the browser. You can transfer your old browser information to your new user profile; however, we recommend against doing so since a part of your old profile was corrupt. You can transfer your old bookmarks to your new user profile by copying the "Bookmarks.bak" file from the "Backup default" folder to your new "Default" folde
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash duplex80 2/9/11 10:24 AM
This happened to me just now as well.  Lucky for me, I had Sync setup beforehand (Options > Personal Stuff > Sync).  Once I signed back in to Sync, all my apps, extensions, themes, bookmarks, etc. were restored.  The only things that weren't restored were the tabs I had open (which I restored by going through the history).  I know it won't help if it already happened and you didn't have Sync setup, but it can help to prevent future such issues.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash KingFunk 2/9/11 12:15 PM
I was right clicked on the chrome "User Data" folder and restored it to an earlier date.  All extensions were restored.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash vcantu27 5/28/11 9:18 PM
Yeah this just happened to me on Win7, and I totally forgot I had sync set up. It took a minute, but once it loaded everything was restored. Sync set-up is a must!!
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash Ardency 6/9/11 4:09 AM
Click the wrench in the upper right corner,
click tools, then click extensions.
All the ones that are gone, you click enable.

Ardency, I know you're trying to be helpful but there's nothing to click if the extensions are gone. Thanks anyway ;)

this is really POOR user experience -- what I would expect from IE6, not Chrome 12.

@duplex/@vcantu27 - how do you 'sign back in to Sync'?  I I have sync set up, but I'm not sure what is meant by/how to sign in.  Just log in to my gmal account?

hockeybum27, Go to Wrench icon > Options >Personal Stuff > Set Sync Up button

Yeah, just log into your gmail account (if that is what you used when setting up your sync account) by doing what war17 said.

Same problem here, Win 7 64bit and Chrome 13.......
:(

for the third time this week ... that's bad
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash iPlissken 8/31/11 5:57 PM
I had a not quite the same, but similar problem today:  I had Chrome open, but the computer rebooted.  When I started it up, it had lost the last week's worth of history and the windows I had open in the browser.  It also detatched the bookmarks tool bar, and rather than open up 'home' it opened a tab called 'new tab'.  Most everything is still here, it's just curious that it didn't open my home page or give me (as it usually does) the option to open last browsed pages.  Not sure what caused that.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash elgrappa 9/14/11 7:18 AM
@nimbostratue
hey man I hope you read this in time, it's too bad if you not but it may be useful for others since I was as frustrated as you.

to everyone who was forced to create a "backup default" and lost everything that made chrome so awesome (e.g. bookmarks, extensions, themes)

do not delete the file you renamed "backup default" instead delete the folder that is now named "default" and change the "backup default" back to "default" then start google chrome.

you will see chrome as you used to with everything still in it, but of course it will not work for whatever reason.

now go to the wrench and click "tools" then you click "personal stuff" it gives the option to sync everything with your google account

(if you don't have a google account make sure you get one since it is pretty much the easiest way and also the only way that I know of but it worked perfectly)

once everything is synced you will do the thing with the renaming "default" into "backup default" again

now you start chrome and it will be all basic just like you said
so you will click the wrench again go to personal stuff again and sync using your google account
once it is synced you will notice that all your things are back to normal and that chrome is working again.

please everyone this is a frustrating problem and I think that there are more people who experience this so tell 'em 'cuz it workes
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash IBleed4Thee 9/14/11 8:38 AM
I have been having the same issue....5 times now. Posting asking for help but so far it has gone unanswered.

I was never forced to create a "backup default"...so this suggestion appears to be of no use.

I've just about had it with Chrome with the constant crashing and slow loading and now this. Each time you close it or hit crashes you lose all your settings and preferences. It's really not worth all the time and energy needed to keep fixing Chrome on our end...and it's been months now.

Any other suggestions on this newest issue and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

IBleed4Thee, sorry that you have been having this problem.  Please describe your problem and how to reproduce it.  Or if you have you posted in detail before, link to that post.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash nicknormal 9/27/11 6:49 AM
Me too. Chrome crashed, rebooted Win7 64-bit. Now ALL my extensions are missing. Everything. No trace of anything in any user/appdata/local folder blah blah. Nothing. Try and 'restore previous version' for User Data and it says there is none. What I don't understand is I had 'Read Later Fast' extension installed before crash; I just re-installed it, and the articles are still there. So the data is still there, somewhere, but not where anybody says it is.

Chrome is pretty useless to me at the moment.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash TenHanger 10/19/11 8:07 AM
SOLUTION:

Synch your entire browser footprint by doing this...
1.  click on the wrench
2.  "Personal Stuff" tab on left
3.  Sync at the top, synch your account by signing in with your gmail account and password.
What this has achieved:
If your computer burns in a fire or gets hit with level 12 influenza viruses, you can simply re-install Chrome on a new computer (or the computer that crashed and lost all your personalized browser apps extensions and themes), then restore your exact browser footprint by falling the steps above, AGAIN.

Once you sign back into "SYNCH" per the 3 instructions above, your entire browser personalized footprint will be restored.

Your Welcome in advance!

Oh, and if you weren't "synching" before your crash occured, you'll have to figure out the very difficult operating system (both MS and Apple have restore or go-back functions) and attempt to go back in time to restore your previous set-up.   This is possible, but you'll have to look it up in help areas on the internets using your operating system type (Snow Leopard, Windows 7, Windows XP, etc etc...)

But for those of you synching already, this is a non-issue, and one of the great features of Chrome.  UNFORTUNATELY, Google Chrome development team hasn't figured out that for every Chrome browser install they should ask the installer if they are coming to Chrome for the first time, or coming back after a problem, that way they could simply prompt the neo-phyte (me) to re-synch and avoid all this problems for those who un-install and re-install the browser.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash TenHanger 10/19/11 8:11 AM
Dear Google Chrome developers,

I recommend you install a PROMPT into the installation sequence for Chrome, a prompt which asks if you're a returning chrome user who wants to restore their old settings.  You'd save a LOT of people a LOT of hassle by doing this, and it would probably take you a single afternoon of programming to add it.

Also, get out of that campus, and start living like real human beings.  I think most of Googles problems are because you dont really know how the real world works.  For example, we like watching sports, how long has it taken you to figure that out in your main product, search?  I still can't even get a ballgame score or figure out which channel is hosting the ballgame without extensive searching, and sometimes I can never figure out which channel something is on.
Re: All chrome extensions and theme lost after computer crash ZooRiver 10/20/11 6:35 PM
Just set up the Sync! I thought I had lost all of my extensions and the culprit was whitesmoke toolbar that seems to just install itself every couple of days. I just logged back into my sync and it was all back to normal. So if someone has a perfect set-up now id set up the sync just for this purpose.

Just goto "chrome://extensions/"

There is a button "Update extensions now" it will bring back all extensions without sync. It is built in features, if you installed to many extensions. IT will disable all ext.
