Re: I HAVE THE GOOGLE REDIRECT VIRUS ANY SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO GET RID OF IT ? StevePaul 5/20/09 8:27 PM
Would also suggest SuperAntiSpyware (free) which is exceptionally good at detecting and removing all kinds of bad stuff ...

Malwarebytes is another one you might want to try and is also free ...

I personally use them both :-D

Re: I HAVE THE GOOGLE REDIRECT VIRUS ANY SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO GET RID OF IT ? nakro 5/20/09 8:33 PM
Steve, again, i am curious, i never had this malwarebytes program and you seem to like it which is cool
but according to this site it does not offer real time protection (for the free version)
if this is true, why do you recommend it ?

Re: I HAVE THE GOOGLE REDIRECT VIRUS ANY SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO GET RID OF IT ? StevePaul 5/20/09 9:01 PM
@nakro

I use Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware as a backup to my normal AV (Avast! Home Edition) and Firewall (PCTools Firewall Plus)

When I purchased my laptop it came with McAfee (which was OK) but I spent a lot of time looking for good alternatives that were freeware ( I believe in freeware !!)

As I'm Vista, I researched all the major players (at one time I actually had AVG installed) and decided on the combination above ...

As for 'On Demand' I still try out the odd one every now and again (I recently tried Advanced System Care) and benchmark them against the two I've got installed

BTW SuperAntiSpyware does offer 'Real Time Protection' but I prefer my Avast!

Another product I've installed recently is Threat Fire (which uses a behavioral approach to Virus detection), it comes packaged with the PCTools firewall (I didn't install it originally)

All in all I think I'm pretty well protected and the products I have installed have a minimal effect on performance :-D

I also have the google redirect virus on two of my computers and i am sorry to let everyone know that none of the fixes mentioned here has worked. I use AVG, Comodo, Ad aware, search and destroy, Hijackthis, Malwarebytes........ and none of those products protected me or solved the problem. I know this has to be a huge issue for Google.. im wondering if they are doing something about it. ....... Im also wondering about who is responsible for it... and if the companies whos sites people are redirected to are aware of how the low life affiliates are getting all the traffic to their sites?
Re: I HAVE THE GOOGLE REDIRECT VIRUS ANY SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO GET RID OF IT ? bethr82000 7/10/09 12:49 AM
Grr, after having Google search issues, then several trojans and viruses on my computer and days of work...finally was able to fix every problem but the Google one. I have IE, Firefox and Chrome all with Google as the homepage and my family all do searches constantly and this redirection issue has gotten on my last nerve. I don't like the other search engine because they usually don't give me what I'm looking for on the first page, so I have to keep going through pages of stuff find the answer. Google has always worked wonderfully...till now. I see here and on several other areas of the Google Help Forum that there has to be an issue directly relating to Google if Yahoo, Bing, Ask, etc aren't affected in the redirection process. It would be nice if someone from Google would respond or help fix these issues. I haven't seen anywhere on here where they really help in any way. I see where they tell you to do basic things that most people who have had a computer would have already thought to do, but no real solutions. I've done all the scans, cleared tons of files, reformatted my computer and even had a professional help me...and still after all I've done, Google search is still messed up. Why isn't there a Contact for Live Help on the bottom of the screen? Does anyone have a clue how to get my search bars back?

Load Hitman 3.5 from CNET.  Run it, and in 5 minutes you are fixed, at least I was.
Re: I HAVE THE GOOGLE REDIRECT VIRUS ANY SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO GET RID OF IT ? dlimanov 1/18/10 12:12 PM
Hitman Pro is the only product on the market (at least at the time of writing this) that will remove and not just detect it.
Re: I HAVE THE GOOGLE REDIRECT VIRUS ANY SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO GET RID OF IT ? seventh_moon 3/5/10 10:57 AM
i tried everything too- malware bytes, super anti spyware, hitman, avira, in safe mode out of safe mode; updating all antivirus and spyware. ive searched the internet for days and tried all kinds of things/advice. i tried updating my ip address so i stop getting redirected to google netherlands. i tried uninstalling and reinstalling ie and firefox and NOTHING, absolutely f***ing NOTHING has worked. it continues to redirect me to those stupid websites and it takes me to google netherland. i am thinking of having to clean out the whole d@mn thing into an empty shell and start from scratch. D@MN you google for not doing anything about this. THIS is what makes your company cr@p!!!

Hitman Pro is excellent. Removed this virus perfectly !

Interesting also that Microsoft Security Essentials AND Malwarebytes Anti Malware couldn't detect it ?? Just how effective are they I wonder, it now gives me a false sense of security as I assumed they were covering my ass !

"Hitman Pro is the only product on the market (at least at the time of writing this) that will remove and not just detect it. "

Hitman seemingly fixed it for me too, I'm still a little paranoid, and I search for something randome (like blue whale's tongue) and clicked through all the links on the first page. No redirects.

Hitman Pro looks like the sollution to this virus and its quick and easy to use, you can download it right from CNet, and it scaned my computer in no time flat. deleted the virus on reboot and so far I'm clean.

Trbear, you sir have my graditude

After you use Hitman, TDSS Killer, Smitfraudfix, etc, to get rid of the malware that made it to your C: drive, reset your wireless router and flush DNS -- in my case, an infected router was the problem in the first place.  Very helpful thread here: http://www.computing.net/answers/security/result5google-virus-/30003.html.  And load the latest Windows, Flash, Java, etc. updates, too.

I had Google redirect virus for about 3 months and tried nearly everything on the Net, until I found a fix for it.  It's called "Win32/AlureonH" Virus. I Downloaded "Microsoft Security Essentials" and it clear up my problem. Hope it can work for others.

http://www.filecluster.com/downloads/TDSSKiller.html

Ksperskys'ys TDSSKiller worked for me when Hitman Pro 3.5.6, Malwarebytes and AVG would not. I recommend it, and hopefully it'll work. It's sole purpose is to get rid of the one file that is causing the Google Redirect Virus
Re: I HAVE THE GOOGLE REDIRECT VIRUS ANY SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO GET RID OF IT ? grinningdog 8/29/10 3:30 PM
I downloaded (from CNET), installed and ran Hitman Pro 3.5 (evaluation - one time only you don't need a key) and it seems to have worked.  I tested it by re-searching for a couple of things I got redirect from earlier and this time it didn't redirect.

I'm still a bit hesitant though, I've been trying to get rid of this redirect issue for a few months, and a couple of times it's seems to have gone only to come back again after a reboot etc.

Hopefully Hitman Pro did the job.

Google really should be all over this.  I only had this problem with Chrome, not Firefox (running 4.0 Beta 4 right now).

We'll see.
Re: I HAVE THE GOOGLE REDIRECT VIRUS ANY SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO GET RID OF IT ? grinningdog 8/31/10 2:45 PM
I haven't had a redirect problem since I ran the Hitman Pro 3.5.  I'm happy to report that it really did work.
Re: I HAVE THE GOOGLE REDIRECT VIRUS ANY SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO GET RID OF IT ? xxchunkymonkeyxx 9/21/10 10:46 AM
I had this exact same problem, also was getting problems with web searches being re-directed like you.

Despite trying a number of antivirus/spyware and malware which didn't solve the problem, I traced it to a common SDSS / TDL3 rootkit which causes the symptoms you are experiencing, which the previous poster mentioned.

Running HitManPro v3.5 from CNet confirmed I had the rootkit virus

I then killed and removed it by using TDSSKiller from kaspersky which is a FREE app and can be downloaded here:

http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684

The scan and fix only took 5 minutes and now my searches are OK and I can now use Windows Update which was being blocked before.

I read that using Combofix can be a bit dangerous for the ill informed so steered clear and the free Kaspersky utility killed it in the blink of an eye.

Hope it works for you. Please post and let us know.

TDSS killer didn't worked for me as many other anyviruses and anyspywares, online scanners and other stuff that I found nad tried to use. The only thing which worked for and is FREE is Dr. Web Cure it. So far infection seems to be gone. I hope it will help you too as I see that it can be caused by many various viruses that is why what work for one person can not work for other. I hope you will remove this sh... too.

Re: I HAVE THE GOOGLE REDIRECT VIRUS ANY SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO GET RID OF IT ? geengeen 12/12/10 5:41 AM
I had the redirect virus for two weeks which nearly drove me insane. After trawling around the web it was clear that standard anti-virus packages couldn't detect this virus. Several 'solutions' that were suggested on forums did not fix my problem either. A few others programs did a scan, told me there were several 'issues' and then invited me to part with money - not too keen on that, especially as the nature of the 'issues' was not given. Then I came across a recommendation for a program Combifix. It's fantastic! And it's free! This is the link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/combofix
The section on the page you need to find is pasted here (the formatting has gone):
Author: sUBs         Download Locations
License: Freeware/Not for commercial use         BleepingComputer Mirror:         ComboFix Download Link

The download was quick. Combifix recommended that I disable McAfee prior to scanning (I guess you may see something else at this point, depending on your set up). It wasn't too clear what the
Combifix program was doing but i could hear the hard drive and processor working hard. In my case I got a message "Rootkit TDL3 is detected". I think this might be the redirect virus, but i can't be sure. After rebooting (the program tells you exactly what you need to do) the scan continued. Messages appeared over the next 20 mins, competed stage 1, completed stage 2... etc. There were 50 stages for me, and they appeared individually or in blocks. The first one and the next 3 or 4 took about 10 mins, and the whole set of 50 took about 25 mins. Best way to use the program I think is to set it running and pop back every 5 or 10 mins. Occasionally you need to click ok or something. At the end I got a report, but it was meaningless to me. Who cares, the problem was fixed!

I saw quite a few warning messages about using Combifix only in the presence of an expert user and that there was risk of damage to the PC. I was so desperate for a fix I gave it a try. I'm not an expert but in my case the on-screen instructions were dead simple and the whole process was remarkably easy. The PC was much quicker afterwards too. I'm running Windows XP, the PC is about 4 years old. Yhe process may take less or more time for you depending on what needs to be fixed, operating system, processor speed etc.

I understand all of your frustrations. I spent weeks trying to get this piece of shit off of my computer. I do not have enough money to go buy a new computer, or to go take it to a repair shop. Even If I did take it to a repair shop, all they would do is reinstall my operating system and charge me a nice chunk of change for it. I have important files on my computer that I needed for work, so I knew I couldn't reinstall my OS. I use this PC to work on the internet often, so I needed it. I tried every single malware removal tool and let me tell you, IT DID NOT WORK! I was seriously thinking about just taking it to a repair shop, and getting a re installation for my operating system. They were going to charge me over 100 dollars! After they told me the price, I took my pc back home, got on my laptop and searched for other answers.  I looked around until FINALLY I found a solution. The solution wasn't free, but for me, it was a life saver! It's a product designed specifically to remove the google redirect virus in seconds! It's the only thing that worked for me. It is 29.95, but it saved me so much time and money because not only did it keep my operating system, but it cost so much less than what a computer repair shop would of charged. So I'm recommending this to you guys if you want it, here it is:

This Is The Google Redirect Virus And There Is Only One Way To Remove It!!

I recently had a similar problem with my computer.  I'd go to Google, Bing, or any other search engine and would get redirected everytime that I clicked on a link.

I tried seven different programs and none of them worked.  Some were free and some I paid for.

Eventually, when I was about to give up and dump my computer, I bought this program that was made especially to get rid of this virus and it worked the first time that I used it!!

You do not know how happy I am that it is gone.  The website information page is at http://www.fastsolutions.info if you want to check it out.

Don't waste your money on anything else!!  Good Luck!!

Re: I HAVE THE GOOGLE REDIRECT VIRUS ANY SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO GET RID OF IT ? vasa1 1/10/11 11:33 PM
As for the post before that, clicking on some shortened URLs could also be a way to get into trouble. I don't know why people use shortened URLs in forums where there is no limit on post length (unless your post is really, really long). As a policy, I avoid clicking on these unless the context is very clear. I know there are ways to find out the real URL but I just assume that someone who uses shortened URLs in a forum is trying to be cute, smart, or is up to no good.

1. Take a hammer
2. Smash your computer
3. Go to the Apple store
4. No more malware/adware/viruses/trojans ever again.

Done.

Also Tried all the manual methods, TDDSKiller doesn't run even if renamed, AVG misses it as does Malwarebytes, so will try Hitman tomoz assuming it's FOC.
The culprit(s) needs to be found and punished (well they will be with future Karma anyway!) ............ as many are infected with no easy solution to hand.

Tomcoll is right: most of the standard answers I have seen out there do not work. I personally tried looking for TDSS.serv, re-installing my browser, using anti-virus programs like Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware, etc. They may have worked on older versions of the virus, but none of them work now.

After hours of frustration, I finally found this forum post that gives you a download link for Kaspersky's TDSSKiller program. It's a small program designed specifically for this problem, and it is worth its weight in gold:

If you have a Google Redirect virus in Windows XP, check the file C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\hosts. It's a list of the IP addresses your browser must use for certain URLs. Some malware makes additions to the list, to redirect your browser's calls to Google and other search engines. These additions remain after the malware is removed and must be deleted by hand. The malware may also hide "hosts" from Windows and DOS: if you have Norton Internet Security, Norton Power Eraser will find and fix it.

Suggestions for Google Redirect Virus Removal

I just went through a very frustrating situation with redirection and inability to pull up careerbuilder job sites. All my computers (desktops and laptops) running in my home were affected.  My ablity to access unavailable sites using my laptops at a remote site away from home-Starbucks, Barnes/Noble, etc. confirmed a problem at my home.   After spending a frustrating amount of  time with the Careerbuilder and cable provider technician with no success I resolved my issue by doing the following:

1. Completed a regular virus scan.
2. Downloaded and ran TDSS Rootkiller.
3. Downloaded and ran Himan Pro.
4. Downloaded and ran ESET online. This found some trojans in the Win/32 files that all these
    programs failed to identify.
4. I then went into my router set up program to review the settings (using a Netgear router for
my wireless connections/router to cable modem connections.  Go to setup (or basic
settings) and be sure that your Internet IP address settings are set to "Get Dynamically from
ISP."   Also confirm your IP, Subnet Mask, and Gateway IP Address.
5. Check your Domain Name Server (DNS) Address and be sure that it is set to "Get Automa-
ticallly from ISP.  This will reset your Primary DNS and Secondary DNS numbers.
    a.  You may get this information from your IPS provider if needed.
6. Hit apply to save your settings
7. Re-run ESET online one more time to be sure you are clean.

When I completed these steps I was able to pull up the Internets sites I was previously
blocked from obtaining.   I also noted that my redirect frequency where totally eliminated.
There was no need to buy a new router (due to router infection).  If needed you may add the additional step of hitting the router reset button.    Combifix is great, but I would only advise careful use of this program as a last resort.   Also note that, TDSS Rootkiller, Hitman Pro and other programs may require you to run repair or re-installs of some other programs on your machine, as these virus infection may attach to dll, exe segments of other programs.  I've tried to be as complete as possible.   Hope this helps!
Re: I HAVE THE GOOGLE REDIRECT VIRUS ANY SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO GET RID OF IT ? badmanmornings 2/18/12 11:58 PM
Okay here is the best solution i found:
first start your computer in safe mode with networking (yes i know the router problem may be part of it-bear with me please).
2cd download mozilla firefox (a fresh copy - i hate this browser so it was painful for me too).
3rd using mozilla download kaspersky tdsskiller.
4th rename tdsskiller to anything else (the virus looks for the defualt name hence the rename)
5th restart computer in normal mode
6th run tdss and reboot when prompted
7th download and run ccleaner from pririform, and make sure all the boxes under windows explorer are checked. this should take care of those pesky router problems. (also if under the internet explorer and system boxes are checked it will help speed up your computer).
This got rid of the virus for me. I tried everything else first, including a full system scan using norton 360 version 5.0 updated within a minute (this has never failed me before, but it did this time) i used malabyte, ad aware, avg, half a dozen other ****ing "fixes". All in all Ive been at this for 3 days, and frankly as a geek its been over 5 years since ived had a virus, so this was highly frustrating for me.

I hope this works for you all. Good hunting!
