|Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Jefff||2/18/09 2:58 AM|
Chrome keeps freezing every time it loads a page, it will get to the page and will work for 5 seconds. But then it suddenly freezes and is stuck loading and i'm unable to do anything. I just got this tonight. Any ideas?2009-02-18
It's selective though, forums will work. But sites like google (fail, here...), any news sites, and video hosting sites won't work.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||TristanLFO||3/15/09 10:16 PM|
I get the same problem. Sometimes I find that if I open another instance of the application, more will work. Or, if I begin segregating my tabs into multiple windows. I find that the problem occurs more often when I have many tabs open at once. Is there some sort of cap on the number of tabs that will function as one window?
Also, anything with flash player causes the page to immediately die. It's also difficult (nigh impossible) to install the flashplayer plugin for chrome.
I really love the browser, but I might have to switch back to IE or Firefox for the sheer sake of funtionality!

mine too !
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||snjflame||3/22/09 2:10 PM|
theres a loading delay and freezing problem in "Chrome Options" too...!
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Xidos||4/3/09 8:13 AM|
I'm having the exact same problem. It started after I updated to the latest version a week or so ago. It's like it starts processing one thread and isn't allowing any others to work.
Around the time it stopped working I was changing Java versions on my machine, so could that be an issue? I thought that might be it so I downloaded the latest version of the JRE (the beta for chome) but the freezing still happens ALL the time. Also, that JRE update messed up my entire system. It sets the java config vars in the registry and windows startup files. So changing the classpath no longer changes the version of java.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||monty11a||4/21/09 10:30 AM|
Same here - the constant freezing is extremely frustrating. I also updated to the latest JRE, and around the same time I stepped up to the Beta version of Chrome. Unfortunately I can't remember which I did first....should know better :(
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||nakro||4/21/09 10:32 AM|
try clearing the cache (wrench->clear browsing data)
it did the trick for me
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||dove1965||12/26/09 11:42 PM|
I have the same Problem it goes ok for awhile and then it freezes then its like my laptop locks up. I have google Chrome Beta but it is still having problems. I do not know what to do.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||levingston||1/11/10 7:39 PM|
yep it's starting to freeze on me too, maybe because its still in beta
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||edmaclin||1/28/10 9:02 AM|
I've had this problem on-and-off since I started using Chrome when it was first released. One of the main reasons I wanted to try Chrome was the claim that it had been designed precisely to "isolate" problems on particular sites. I'm seriously considering going back to Firefox if this problem persists. Is anyone aware of any response to this issue from someone at Google?
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||tanel900||1/29/10 12:36 AM|
have tryed same way as nakro made and it works. seems that chrome has no possibility to automatically delete cash, so it seems it runs out of memory or smthng. if you clear the cashe you will have fast brauser back.
have anyone tryed to manage bookmarke btw? i have mac version and i can't find any possibilities - it only lets you add, but not mange late - no rename/folder naming what soever
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||angneld||2/4/10 11:09 AM|
I've had this problem lately and I've been using chrome for about 7 months. Nakro's comment worked! but here's a clearer path to it: wrench> Options> Personal Stuff> Clear browsing data. Hope this works for you!
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||PDR75||2/22/10 7:50 PM|
I don't even have time to clear the cache. Chrome is now freezing about 5 seconds after booting it up. It was working fine, then I was in Bookmark Manager and tried to drag the "Other Bookmarks" folder into the main bookmarks folder (so it wasn't taking up bookmark bar space) and it froze with a green + icon on the mouse. Ever since then, it freezes just after booting. I've uninstalled it, including preferences, several times, but it keeps asking if I want to restore my previous session, then freezes.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Phyll||3/23/10 9:32 AM|
I've been having this problem a lot lately too. Clearing my cache doesn't seem to effect its frequency. It also doesn't seem to occur when viewing specific things, like video or whatnot. Just browsing Livejournal can make it freeze up for at least 10 seconds between pages.
Occasionally, the browser will crash so that the taps on top disappear and it just says "Google Chrome (Not Responding)". Then I will get the sadface puzzle piece plugin error/crash message pop up, though it won't stay up long enough for me to read it unfortunately... But what will happen is that it will disappear and the tabs will reappear and the browser will be back again and working.
Hope some of this helps determine the root of the problem.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||ChrisHacken||4/7/10 11:03 PM|
I'm getting the same problems as everyone else. It's only on Windows though.. I run Chrome on LinuxMint without any issues.
Although, this just started happening to me today. It started freezing up for 4/5 secs every few minutes so I didn't really mind it, but now it's pausing for 4/5 seconds every 20/30 seconds so it's disturbing my browsing. I notice it mainly when I enter text into a textbox or when I click on a link, etc. destroying the process and reopening doesn't help at all ether.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Phyll||4/7/10 11:46 PM|
Try reinstalling/updating Shockwave. This fixed the problem for me.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||tanel900||4/7/10 11:54 PM|
So i'm running now 5.0.342.7 beta on mac snowleopard and lately there has been lots of improvements - it doesn't freeze anymore and still fast. Also bookmark management I was complying about is fixed and works.
Still problems with ID-card reader - no support and it doesn't play all types of videos in different web sites. So I still have firefox to support chrome.
btw emptying cash is still regular weekly activity.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||heeelllpppp||4/11/10 12:06 PM|
chrome version: 5.0.342.9
mac OSX 10.5.8
Turn Off the Lights - Version: 184.108.40.206
Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer (by Google) - Version: 1.5.6
chrome freezes randomly throughout the day. unable to go on sites like twitter or facebook about 50% of the time due to freezes. youtube and hulu are completely unusable in chrome, and will freeze 100% of the time before any video can ever load.
i love chrome but i'm forced to switch back to safari because it is not currently working for me :(
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||suthorlando||4/14/10 11:47 AM|
Exact same problem. Clearing the cache does -nothing-, nor does changing the auto detect proxy settings. Neither solution works for this problem. I'm using google chrome 5.0.342.9 beta on a 3.0Ghz Quad Core AMD with 8 Gigs of RAM, task manager shows no unusual activity. Chrome just runs slower than netscape navigator on windows 98. Pathetic. Time to switch back to firefox.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||deadkenny||4/16/10 2:39 PM|
I get what seems to be the same. It starts by a page locking up and then Chrome totally locks up with 'Not Responding' in the window title, and then Windows itself locks up. Can't even do a ctrl+alt+del. Only option is to long press the power button on the laptop.
Was fine until recently, so maybe it's a Chrome update. Though it also only affects one of my PCs.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||shedd||4/20/10 9:55 PM|
I didn't have this issue in the earlier builds but I just updated to Google Chrome on Mac and now have this issue constantly. Force quitting and restarting Chrome helps, but only temporarily.
I'm using Chrome 5.0.342.9.
I hope you fix this Google - I can't take it any longer, going back to Safari until this bug is fixed.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Bthebest||4/23/10 11:02 AM|
This response by kerz on another page seems to work!
AUTO DISCOVERYING PROXY: The "auto detect proxy" function of Win 7 may be causing lag for some users. To disable it, go to Wrench->Options->Under the Hood->Change Proxy Settings. Click "LAN settings" and uncheck "automatically detect settings". Additionally click "Settings" (if it’s not grayed out) and uncheck "Automatically detect settings" here too. Hit OK until you get back to the browser. Test to see if the problem has gone away.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||m.minelli||5/13/10 3:35 AM|
Hi everyone. Bthebest's trick seems to work for a while but then I got the same problem again. Chrome freezes for 20-30 seconds when loading pages with pictures or videos inside... Any other solution for this problem?
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||pozitronic||5/26/10 7:33 AM|
I am also having this problem. I've tried all of the above. I tried disabling all extensions. I cleared the cache. I checked proxy settings to not automatically detect settings. I've tried stable, beta, and dev...still same problem. I'm on Win 7 64bit.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Genen||5/27/10 9:11 AM|
I noticed that it seemed to hang in pages that had at least 1 FLASH element. After removing and reinstalling FLASH (OSX latest non-beta) chrome stopped hanging.
I do wish that you could scroll at least even if the page hangs - like firefox lets you do on a partially loaded page - but Chrome seems to not allow you to scroll 'stuck' or 'loading' pages
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Nathan008||6/14/10 4:27 PM|
I have the same problem. Aside from locking up every now and then, I also can't check my gmail account. It's a google apps email, but it just sits there and gets stuck. Sometimes Adobe Flash stops working completely as well, and the embedded flash videos don't display properly even if I restart Chrome.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||QQFarmer||6/14/10 5:37 PM|
A reminder for guys who have similar problems: check out this page for conflicting software installed in your system that might crash or slow down Chrome: http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/static.py?page=known_issues.cs . Add RoboForm to the list.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||ramirez60||6/24/10 6:46 AM|
I had a similar problem and I think I found the solution. It does seem to be a flash problem so I think everyone was on the right track. The solution that seems to have worked for me is clearing all the flash history. Chrome - Preferences - Under the Hood - Clear Browsing Data - Adobe Flash storage settings. I couldn't get this site to load on chrome while I was having the problem but you can load it on any browser.
Is the link. Clear all the history (I didn't want to go through it and find the potential issue one by one, but I imagine it's just a new site I had visited). Chrome is back to normal now.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||JustJinxed||6/28/10 11:42 PM|
Same issue.. Definitely something in the particular page causing it. I can 100% recreate the issue. Mouse shows an hourglass as if it's loading something.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||capemayscrapper||9/18/10 8:43 AM|
I've been having the same issue the last few days. I've changed no settings on my computer and the settings on my Flash Player have not changed either. I cleared the history and it's still freezing. I'm thinking of uninstalling it and reinstalling...just to see if there is a glitch. You never know...it might just work.
Any other ideas?

I disabled Roboform... using LastPass instead and haven't had any freezes since I made that change.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||TucsonDavid||11/5/10 9:22 AM|
Started having problems with Chrome locking up when multiple windows were open just recently. Downloaded the beta, but that didn't help. It seems that it locks up mainly when I have a Google search page open. I made Bing my default search engine, and so far Chrome hasn't locked up. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Lockups occurred before I installed the Roboform add-on.

Really annoying, chrome is already showing content but I cannot scroll until the page is fully loaded...

has anyone filed a bug on this?

I've been having this issue for a long time as well. I keep hoping the newer releases of Chrome would fix this, but still a real frustrating issue. How does Google seem to not recognize that this is a problem?
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||erikgil||2/7/11 10:35 AM|
Same here. Gutted Chrome and re-launched from scratch , OSX 10.6.6.

|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||MaxPaxman||3/7/11 11:46 AM|
I think i found a fix for the problem i've been having with slow page loads when many tabs are open. Click the wrench icon at the top right, then "tools", then check "always show bookmarks bar". That's it. The problem might be related to importing bookmarks from IE - at least in my case.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Nick_Al||3/10/11 3:53 AM|
I've found why Chrome was freezing - try to disable all extensions and then turn on some of them to detect which one causes the problem. In my case it was AdBlock and Browser Button for AdBlock.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||cje_stcloudmn||3/28/11 7:26 PM|
Same problem for months. ANY Flash elements causes a page failure. Disabling both internal and external flash extensions allows access to pages, but not Flash content. I have Chrome Beta 11.0.696.25, and just loaded the latest Flash. Have previously unloaded and reload these applications as well. Clear flash site history didn't help. Clearing browser history didn't help. As all other browsers I've tried, (IE, FF, Opera) work fine, it is either Chrome, or some Windows XP component that doesn't play well.

gf mentioned she had the problem so I guess the issue is pretty widespread now...as she did, I think people tend to blame it on their internet connection, but it's definitely a chrome bug.

Google Chrome is a sensitive browser. If it is open for a while unused, it will crash and the only way to fix this is to restart your computer.
Hope this helps,

|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Rakista||7/7/11 11:50 AM|
Are you guys running an antivirus as well as a firewall program that scan web pages on load?
That might be your problem. Only one should be doing that, if not you are tripling the amount of CPU to browse the web, with pages with a lot of elements being especially hard on the average system.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Rafael C.P.||7/15/11 1:37 PM|
Same here with Ubuntu 10.04 and Chrome 12.0.742.112 (but the issue already existed in older versions). CPU goes to 100%.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||NeilKalman||8/29/11 8:20 PM|
This is definatley a FLASH PROBLEM!
try the next test: write in the address bar 'about:plugins' and DISABLE FLASH.... try to enter again the site that you got stuck on just a moment ago (notice that just trying to refresh doesn't work here. you need to close the stucked tab and enter to the site with a completely fresh start :-))
that fixed ALL the sites I got stuck on.... although.... well...... surfing without flash sucks -___-....
but at least we know what's the problem is....

|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Max Paxman||9/4/11 2:41 PM|
Disabling Flash didn't speed things up. It takes 10 seconds just to open a blank, new tab! The only way the browser works at normal speed is surfing in incognito mode. So i think the problem lies with the cache or surfing history. I do have a ton of tabs open, so maybe that's part of the problem. Does anyone have slow browsing with only a few tabs open?

same thing here. chrome on windows 7 64bit (intel core i3, 4gb ram) freezes randomly when loading pages and i have to kill the task. chrome has become an awful bloatware. you load 10 pages and you have 1gb memory usage. that's ridiculous. and i also HATE those UNREQUESTED updates. i'll switch back to ie.

I have the same problem, I had to switch to Firefox to search if anyone else has this problem. As a note, I can pull up a site, have it freeze on load, take the URL, put it in FireFox and it loads immediately. So its not the site, its the browser.

Chrome was advertised as being fast . Things were ok for a few months. Now it just freezes !!!!
Even more ridiculous : I use firefox 3015 . I keep receiving messages in Google websites (and others) saying I should update to a modern browser ( Chrome by instance). But Chrome does not work .
In the past internet worked fine. Now it does not. with thousands of programmers working .., they manage to change so much stuff ..,that browsers seem to have many problems.

|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||suequita||8/17/12 3:23 PM|
I began to have the same problem with Chrome about a month ago. Some webpages started to download, then froze and I couldn't do anything, not even scroll down, but the curious thing was that if I opened a new tab, then went back to the first, this one was completely downloaded and working OK. (!!) I guess it had to do with Flash and animated webpages. So I uninstalled both Flash Player and Google Chrome, (even though Flash is integrated in Chrome but I wanted to be sure I removed the suspect). I reinstalled Chrome (not Flash because I rarely use another browser, if needed I will reinstall it as well) and the problem was fixed.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||ACreolePrincess||8/26/12 10:56 PM|
suequita, the same thing happened to me. I would have to open a new tab just so the previous page would load. I thought I was never gonna find someone with the same issue. Uninstalling Chrome, then reinstalling it seems to work for me too. So far, so good. Thanks for the info.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||KBhatty||9/11/12 9:44 AM|
I have the same exact issue. The only thing that works is switching to a new tab and then going back to the same tab.
I hope Google fixes this problem soon.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||flintlock62||9/14/12 9:26 AM|
The way to overcome the freezing problem is to disable shockwave, but THEN you can't view video's. Google really needs to fix this or shockwave needs a patch. Either way, it's frustrating.
PLEAS Google, fix this!!!!!!
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Cody Jeziorski||12/11/12 9:48 AM|
Ive actually found a way to fix this temporally until it decides to act up again but the process is quite easy. basically all you need to do is open up your task manager go to processes then click once on memory so the programs using the most memory show up on top. then find chrome.exe in there and find the one that is using the most memory(there is only more than one if you have multiple addons) then right click on the chrome.exe that is using the most memory and hit end process. when you open chrome again it seems to reset itself without waiting a long time for it to crash. hope it helps!
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Frank Black||12/31/12 10:50 PM|
Actually it is a deal chrome has known for a long time and still cant seem to fix it. Open a page and up in address bar type in chrome://plugins. The its usually the top one disable the the one that is "out of process". Its two conflicting plugins that crash it.
|Re: Google Chrome Freezing when loading a page||Eleanor Redwood||1/17/13 12:31 PM|
I have had a problem where chrome just freezes a webpage after I go onto another tab, and then go back to that same tab. I haven't found an answer yet, but I did find that if you press F12 (Inspect Element) it sort of "wakes" the screen up and the tab is unfrozen. This however, is only a short term solution.

I have a work around for this problem which allows web page to recover immediately.

This will work 100%. Enjoy.

using Version 26.0.1410.43 m of Chrome on windows 8 i have found that sites which incorporate zillions of social likes, pluses and Up yours-es buttons, As well as advertising from multiple sources is what chrome is choking on. Cant reproduce in IE. thought it might be ad/flash/etc block but the issue occurs in bare chrome too.
