|Chrome doesn't open to home page||nedwilcox||8/17/10 3:39 PM|
Chrome 5.0.375.126 (Mac Leopard) doesn't open to the home page anymore (Google.com). This has been for the last few weeks or so. It opens to a blank page that says Google (logo) Chrome near the top left. This is also true of new tabs. I have "On start, open the home page" ticked in prefs, and "Home page: Open this page - http://www.google.com/" selected. What the...?
I have the latest version now too, and the problem remains.

Easiest way is to set "open the homepage" and make sure "open this page: http://google.com" is entered under the homepage section.

Thanks daaaveeeee. That is how I have it configured. I noticed you didn't include the "www", and I removed it from the address, hoping that was the problem. But it still opens to the odd Chrome page, which, by the way, has no address listed in the address bar. Also, it DOES open to the correct Google search page when the program is first opened in the morning. But if I close all windows and then click the Chrome icon, I get the odd page (Macs don't quit the program when you close all windows, as PCs do). And I am quite sure this is new behavior. It is just an extra click to go to the Home Page button (which works), but it is strange.
I am running Ghostery and WOT extensions, but disabling them changes nothing.

Ah, well sorry I can't help you there, I don't own a mac. But like you said it could be something to do with the way Mac handles the closure of programs.

I've got the same problem here. I try to avoid this "new tab" page and have google chrome open with my home page but it just doesn't work whatever I try. Wonder if there is anyone who found a solution to this problem because although I'm very fond of Chrome's speed I find it irritating that I can't set it up properly and am now thinking of switching to a browser that DOES allow me to setup a homepage.... because I consider this a quite fundamental attribute of my browser.

All I can suggest is make sure you have the latest version of Chrome, as I notice @nedwilcox has an outdated version.
|Re: Chrome doesn't open to home page||Gert1971||10/14/10 8:49 AM|
I downloaded it yesterday and the version is 6.0.472.63. It also shows that it's still up to date (after one day) so I don't think that can be the problem.

I just had the problem with the latest version Chrome, and it was not a Chrome problem! Not opening the home page happens if you click on a document for a specific page. You need to make sure what you are clicking on is for "chrome" and not a web page.
Test this by going through the "Start" menu. If you open Chrome this way, you should get your home page.

tomdozier's solutions's a good one. you can copy the icon from the start menu to desktop or status bar to replace the one that's been leading you to the bum home page

I have a Macbook Pro OS X 5.8. using Google Chrome 13.0.752.107. I've had Google Chrome for about 3 weeks and haven't had a problem with my START PAGE until about 5 days ago. I now get from google error 404. I put http://www.google.com on my address bar and it still comes up with error 404.
I double checked to make sure on preferences that I have google.com as my start up page and it is..nothing has changed except that google.com doesn't work.
I use Firefox and Safari and google.com loads up fine. Seems silly to use Yahoo or Bing for searching on "Google" Chrome.
Seems other people are having this issue, I left feedback to Google Chrome but obviously they don't want to communicate or just not enough people with the problem for them to communicate?

I have a Mac and had the same problem with Chrome.
[Chrome] --> [Preferences] --> [On Start Up] --> [Open Following Pages:] --> Type in www.google.com
Hope it works for you too.

Doesn't [wrench > options > Homepage] work?
|Re: Chrome doesn't open to home page||Andykoom||9/22/11 9:36 PM|
No it doesn't. This seems to affect many Macs. There is a bug which Google has ignored for months. Unfortunately, my method only works on initial launch of Chrome.

Yeah i'm not getting any pages to load when i start Chrome either (on my mac.) The funny thing is on my home PC, which is synced to have the same account it does open the corrected pages as it should.

All I want is the Google Search Page with background to appear as my homepage. I have tried all of Google's suggestions as well as many of those posted. I am completely frustrated over what should be a simple task. I believe that someone from Google Support should respond, after all they say "how can we help you".
|Re: Chrome doesn't open to home page||nedwilcox||2/4/12 8:53 PM|
There is nothing to do. They aren't going to fix it. Google is too big--there is no way to even contact them. This is a bad sign. It's like Microsoft now. You just have to click your home icon after the blank page loads.
|Re: Chrome doesn't open to home page||mbeckwith||5/2/12 4:00 PM|
The homepage does NOT open correctly when using a Mac OS X.
If you close your homepage by clicking the 'x' on the top, the page will then open with tabs showing previously used pages.
If you close your homepage using 'Quit Google Chrome' the homepage will open correctly on your next visit. This needs addressing.

I don't close the tab and this seems to work. Always QUIT chrome when you exit. I hope this helps!!!

I'm surprised that google cannot have a fix for this after all this time. Settings, on startup, check "open a specific page or set of pages" and add your homepage there.
|Re: Chrome doesn't open to home page||RonnM||5/17/12 9:07 AM|
yes nedwilcox. i am also getting the same problem. agree with you google has become behemoth like msn and now they don't care and why should when they are getting hefty profits and users. but one day they will be squeezed by some other rival like msn is getting squeezed by google & facebook. this is not customer service. i think why we are getting new tab page is Goggle want to promote their applications as you see their products in the new tab page first. remember on gmail now we dont have 1 click sign out button. they are doing intentially.

For me The solution is: click in chrome on the little wrench on the right top corner, in there, on settings
then ; "On start up"
place a mark on... "Open a specific page or set of pages. Set pages"
then set the page on... www.google.com

The newer posts in this thread are referring to a new issue that is being discussed in a larger thread. As such, I'm merging the two.
