"This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? runny3mede 2/3/10 10:10 AM
Every time, and I do mean EVERY TIME, I try to go to a webpage, bookmarked or not, frequently used or not, I get the error "This webpage is not available."  I refresh and the page loads.  EVERY TIME!   I mean, I love Chrome but this is seriously making me consider going back to Firefox.  I did a "man on my chat" interview and of my friends that use Chrome more than 50% have the exact same issues.  Different operating systems (some are even MAC).   How can this be fixed??

NOTE:  I have gone into tools and removed the checkmark beside "Show suggestions for navigation errors" but all that did was make the page look more basic.

Here's my details:

Google Chrome version (type in about:version into the address bar):  4.0.249.78 (36714)
Operating System:  Vista Home Premium
URLs (if applicable):  Any (gmail, facebook, cbc.ca ... etc.)
Error Message: This webpage is not available
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? runny3mede 2/3/10 10:25 AM
here's what the error looks like ..

This webpage is not available.

The webpage at http://www.facebook.com/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

Here are some suggestions:
Reload this web page later.

I am also getting this error. Never had this error before....it started happening a couple weeks ago. Seriously annoying! Check IE and it loads pages fine. Thinking of going to FF.

Any help on this issue?

i found this response on another thread.

i do have vista as mentioned previously but the firewall is not active.  also i have norton but since this problem ONLY just started occuring within the last two weeks and i've had norton for 3 years and have been using chrome since it came out .. i'm thinking that's not the issue either.

i'll do what they suggest and report back

Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? runny3mede 2/7/10 11:00 PM
I wanted to follow up in the event that anyone was following this thread.   I applied the fix that the Chrome Guide 1 suggested for my OS, Vista Home Premium.  That is, I added Chrome to the list of allowed programs in the Windows Firewall.

To do this I went to START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL > WINDOWS FIREWALL and then clicked on the link in the left hand nav "Allow a program through windows firewall".  Google Chrome was not on the list that was there but they give you a browse button and from there Google Chrome was listed.  I restarted my computer and then started to browse.

I had ALMOST 100% success the first time going through my favourites with the exception of Facebook.  However, 2nd time through it was 100%. I'm hoping that this has fixed the issue for good.  I really didn't want to abandon Chrome.  I do love it so.
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? runny3mede 2/8/10 4:11 PM
Well that was short lived.  Only one day of things loading smoothly and I'm back to the same issue.  Nothing is loading without having to click refresh.  I double checked all the firewall rules I set up yesterday and they are all there.  So now what?

Hello Google Guide 1 ... can you help me please!!???
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? dbonk 4/8/10 4:23 PM
I'm still waiting for someone to attempt an answer........

The suggestion that we reload the page is PART OF THE PROBLEM. The problem (for me) is that instead of loading a web page, most of the time, I get the error page. THEN if I RELOAD the page I usually get it loaded. Sometimes I have to reload 2 or 3 times.
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? howweuse 4/8/10 5:31 PM
I've been having this problem too. Like 80% of the pages I open give me Error 101/This page is not available. I cleared the browser data and did the firewall thing and it seems to be working a bit better now. I'm going to wait and see how long it lasts.

Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? gr8_big_geek 8/7/10 9:57 AM
Holy cow! This is so annoying. I have tried the fixes supplied in this forum but nothing works. I have never had this problem until recently. I have confirmed that Chrome is allowed through the firewall, I use Avast! Anti-virus (and have for about 4 years), I am running Windows 7 (on a new laptop). I have also gone to Chrome options and deselected all of the items suggested in the Google help page. The only thing I can think of that is different is that I am running Win7 now. Is that the issue? This is becoming very frustrating though.

what did your final configuration look like (if you don't mind sharing)? I mean it's great that yours is working nicely, but the rest of us are still surfing through screwedsville.

Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? Robert's cell 8/14/10 6:50 PM
That pic in itself won't tell if roby.rakesh did anything in Content settings… or Clear browsing data….

Anyway, selecting those other checkboxes didn't do it for me.

I have this error only on certain Google domains, namely, code.google.com and translate.google.com

It's consistent, in that Chrome's built-in translation also fails.

This problem has happened over at least two periods while using Chrome dev or Chromium on my Mac. It's unknown to me what happened to stop the problem before, or what caused it start again; I don't recall it happening in concert with an update.

Other Mac browsers (Safari, Camino, etc) on the same machine continue to load [code|translate].google.com just fine. Wiping out all of Chrome's cookies and local data has no effect on the failure. A Chromium install on a similar machine running Ubuntu on the same WLAN does not have the problem.

Hope that helps someone narrow it down.
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? Robert's cell 8/14/10 6:55 PM
(continued)

The error I get is:
Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error.

Reloading does NOT load the page.

Currently using 6.0.490.1 dev (Mac)
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? Robert's cell 8/14/10 7:29 PM
I just found what was causing the problem for me, with code.google.com and translate.google.com.

A leftover rule in Little Snitch (a reverse firewall for outgoing traffic from applications) was blocking clients1.google.com in Chrome and Chromium. The rule was originally entered to block Google Suggest.

Apparently, Google Translate and Google Code won't load a page at all if clients1.google.com is blocked.

Well I want to like chrome but same problem here.  I've tried all the suggestions I have been able to find but no luck... I hope we can get some attention form google here (unlikely).
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? edcoffin 9/1/10 8:53 PM
I get this error sporadically, on random web pages.  The sites in question never fail to load when I x out the result of using a link or a bookmark, and try again.  Is there a timing mechanism I'm not aware of in play here?  I'm on XP (will never go to Vista or Win7, will go straight Linux instead if XP support is discontinued).  I like Chrome, it's features, but it's maddening to get this error when I know the subject site is not down, has not been relocated, and nothing is basically wrong.   Copy of the error text:
This webpage is not available.

"The webpage at http://www.txlottery.org/export/sites/default/Games/Cash_Five/index.html might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? jambato 9/6/10 5:33 AM
Same problem here... considering going back to Firefox.
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? farmvillebill 9/12/10 3:13 PM
I have the same problem. I think my problems started when chrome moved the favorite staar to the right of the address bar, so maybe they changed something else as well.
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? sigipaez 9/19/10 12:41 PM
I've had this problem for the last two months or so. I have Win 7, Chrome 6.0.472.62 beta. I've tried all the good suggestions ii this blog and others, plus some of my own. It seems to work for a day or less, and then back to "This webpage is not available" or other similar error.

This problem is not only annoying, but is very unproductive and a waste of time. As much as I like Chrome, I'm going back to Firefox. I might even take a look at IE9 beta (that's how frustrated I am!!)
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? Artricunus 10/5/10 9:55 PM
I checked this with both Chrome and IE to see what the deal was. I was using Facebook just fine right before my little brother closed his laptop and went to bed. Then it wouldn't load a single bit of Facebook. Finally, I decided to run a test and almost simultaneously with me reopening his laptop and turning it on, I got access to Facebook again. Does anyone understand this. I'm beyond confused!
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? 26psicivic 10/6/10 5:57 PM
if your on windows i'm going to take a guess and say it's your firewall or antivirus program.  I was having the same problem on my mac and it was little snitch.

Are any of you using the free version of speedbits video accelerator?  I turned mine off and was able to load some websites that were stuck as "This webpage is not available."
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? mike.holenderski 11/15/10 4:41 AM
I was having the same problem on with Chrome on Snow Leopard. I am running Little Snitch to monitor and block outgoing connections, and it turned out I had blocked connections to port 443 to google.com for Chrome. If you are using Little Snitch (or something similar) try changing the block list in the preferences.
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? joyatkinson 11/15/10 2:38 PM
I get a similar problem, however in my case it only affects pages that I've searched for. All google results will open displaying "this webpage is not available...", and lists the error as Error 9. This has only been happening for about a week and before this I never had any issues (I've been using chrome for a long long time now). My firewall isn't the issue and I'm at a complete loss!
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? critchleysj 11/15/10 9:49 PM
I am getting this issue. Using Chrome 7. I am experiencing it on two seperate computers on seperate networks connected to seperate hardware.

Similarities are: both running windows 7. both have a draytek router but a different model. Similarities pretty much end there.

When it happens a single domain becomes unresponsive for a period of time. Other browsers can load the domain and Chrome will still load other domains but any request to the problem domain will fail for about 1-3 minutes. I first noticed this problem in Chrome 6. I get it a few times every day, most often on the asp.net forums but it is definitely not specific to any one site.

IT IS A MAJOR PROBLEM. Might tolerate it for a few weeks more but then going to have to go back to Firefox. This should have been tracked down and fixed ages ago.

Getting the same exact problem.  That and the fact that there is no toolbar / file menu pisses me off greatly.   Back to FF for me.

I got a new laptop on black friday and loaded chrome as I was told it is a lot faster than FF. I'm getting this same problem. I thought it may be a problem between my wifi (2wire) and the new laptop. It drives me crazy. I'm going back to FF.  I can't believe that it hasn't been fixed yet.

Also having this problem the last few days. Tried a bunch of recommended fixes which seem to work for at least a couple hours, but then the problem returns. I switched from Firefox to Chrome months ago and really don't want to go back, but I don't think I can put up with this much longer. It is very annoying.

people get a grip... the developers are working hard to make this web browser better... saying stuff like I'm switching to Firefox or why this issue isn't fixed yet? Isn't going to help... please try to help or find out why the problem is occurring... learn how to code and look at chromium's source, look for errors and make optimize the code... your whining isn't going to fix it...
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? Gamewizard71 1/17/11 6:07 PM

Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? critchleysj 1/17/11 6:13 PM
I think the issue is this a critical problem that people can't work around and at time makes using Chrome unbearable. It's also been around for a long time (by browser standards). I would argue we need connections to be made properly and successfully much more than we need... gpu page processing for example or even *gasp!* rounded corners.

I haven't actually seen this in a while now using 8.0.552.237.
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? MikeGwaltney 1/27/11 10:05 AM
Hi Gang. I had the 'webpage not available' on almost every page with Chrome on my Mac. I realized the problem might be Little Snitch. I have uninstalled Little Snitch and I no longer have the problem. Yes, uninstalling Little Snitch solved the issue completely - Chrome works great now.

Incidentally, I was having a similar problem with Skype - after a moment or two, Skype lost the connection. Again, this has been solved. I think the configuration of Little Snitch on my computer was not correct. Configuring LS is fairly complicated, so the uninstall is my recommendation.
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? marreboy 1/30/11 3:13 AM
I am also receiving this error. I think it is somewhat related to the webpage I am visiting. I get it randomly on pages on the net. Usually not in an amount that is more than a slight annoyance. But on forum.xbmc.org it is unbearable to use chrome. Almost every single click generates the error and I have to reload the page which then loads just fine.

I've had this error for a few weeks and reading through these replies i worked out what the problem was in my case. I have peerblock installed, as soon as i disabled this the webpages loaded fine. Like i said this worked for me, hope it helps someone else

Not helpful. Never helpful. Google knows full well why this is happening but does not fix it... I wonder what the secret is?
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? warmwhisky 7/19/11 11:19 AM
Re installed chrome... seemed to work for a while... back to normal... Chrome does not work well. No one has an answer for this. Chrome is inferior to other browsers.

It's nice to know that I'm not losing it.  Now I know that there is no point in messing around with my system.  This is Google's problem.  There are a lot of things I like about Chrome, but this is not one of them.  GOOGLE - Get on the stick and fix this.
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? cave76 11/25/11 9:15 AM
Same error message----- but it just started when the Thanksgiving traffic probably got busy. Do you think that could be the problem. (Not that it shouldn't get fixed!!)

I disabled Shockwave. Same problem.
Has anyone deleted all their cookies and browser history? Did that work--- before I try that?

arghhhh!
Re: "This webpage is not available." Why am I getting this so often? patrickkeenan 12/21/11 6:29 PM
I'm getting this same problem.

I believe this is an issue with any HTTPS site. I also get this problem when using Safari and other webkit browsers.

The only cause I can think of is a silverlight plugin I installed last night. I have uninstalled it, but still no luck. I am currently using firefox, and hope this can be fixed soon!
