Chrome won't start (used to work fine) JoshuaJ 11/26/08 10:20 AM
I've been using Google Chrome since it came out, and I've been thrilled with how much better it performs than IE or Firefox. As of today, though, it won't start. Nothing happens when I try to open it. I'd love to provide more info, but there's nothing in the Event Log. There's nothing in the Application Data\Google\CrashReports folder. I can't find anything that looks like a log at all. Is there any way I can get more information about what's going wrong?

(I tried a few solutions posted here before: turned on windows 2000 compatibility mode, and ran it with --no-sandbox. No luck.)
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Misael Perez - PR 11/26/08 11:30 AM
I suggest.. just backup the profile folder and reinstalled (repair) chrome downloading the latest version... then just paste back the profile folder...
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Google Chrome Guide1 11/26/08 4:56 PM
Hey JoshuaJ,

Can you test something? If you go to Start > Run. Then type in the following text:
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\0.4.154.25\Installer\setup.exe" --rename-chrome-exe

Does that work for you? Thanks for your help!

Dude! This has been haunting me for days - I've tried all the tricks I could find on the web, ctfmon, regedit tricks etc.

As soon as I ran the above, I clicked on Chrome and up it popped! Awesome bro, thanks so much!
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) JoshuaJ 11/28/08 8:38 AM
This fixed it for me, too. Thanks! (And for the first time ever, when I had problem with a google product, I actually got noticed and helped by a google employee! Has google actually discovered the concept of customer service? Unbelievable! :)

Didn't do it for me... HELP Please!!! :-)
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) strausjo 12/2/08 5:05 AM
I had the same problem, I just re-installed Chrome from the original site.  Works fine now.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) nickoftheparty 12/2/08 8:03 PM
whenever I do this, it says "Windows cannot find C:\Documents"... how can I fix this?
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) JoshuaJ 12/3/08 6:28 AM
Nick, there's a missing quotation mark in the answer. What you actually need to run is this (including the quotation marks):
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) ioresult 12/3/08 7:01 AM
I had to run the following for it to work:
"%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\0.4.154.29\Installer\setup.exe" --rename-chrome-exe
Make sure you type your actual version number.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Google Chrome Guide1 12/4/08 3:18 PM
Hey guys,

Still working on making this easier for everyone as well as work for those who it doesn't work for. Can you give me additional details?

- What version of Google Chrome were you using before?
- Can you tell me what value is listed for a specific reg key? To do this:

1. Go to Start > Run and type REGEDIT. Click OK.
2. In the Registry Editor, select the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Update\ClientState\{8A69D345-D564-463C-AFF1-A69D9E530F96}\ap
3. Note the value listed in the 'Data' column. You can also right-click the key, select Modify and copy the value.
4. DO NOT change the reg key

Thanks a lot for your help guys...I'm trying to make it so that other users don't have to manually do this if they run into the same problem.

Best,
Shawn
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Google Chrome Guide1 12/5/08 12:30 PM
Also, I forgot to clarify.

For XP:

"%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\0.4.154.29\Installer\setup.exe" --rename-chrome-exe

For Vista:
"%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\Application\0.4.154.25\Installer\setup.exe" --rename-chrome-exe

Remember to type in your actual version number between Application and Installer (Thanks ioresult!)
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) eljefe 12/8/08 7:44 AM
Shawn - This is prior to trying the fix. My version is (apparently) 0.4.154.29. In the %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application folder is an executable called "chrome.exe" dated 9/4/2008, and another called "new_chrome.exe" dated 12/1/2008. I recently restarted this XP machine.

The registry key ...\ap above doesn't exist. There is a brand, browser, dr, lang, pv, and usagestats.

After running the fix "new_chrome.exe" is gone - "chrome.exe" is still there and is dated 12/1/2008. There is still no ...\ap in the registry.

The fix appears to get me running again.

For XP:
"%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\0.4.154.29\Installer\setup.exe" --rename-chrome-exe

This worked for me. Thank you so much. This has been driving me nuts. I <3 Google.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Matt Bell 12/9/08 11:59 AM
This just happened to me too. I've tried the above solutions, as well as using windows 2000 compatibility mode, no sandbox etc, and nothing's worked.
I have uninstalled a few things on my computer today, not sure if any of them would've affected Chrome in any way though.
Help!
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) iambg 12/10/08 1:59 PM
I've tried each of these suggestions to no avail. I receive no errors, but no results. Any other suggestions?
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) randrewcocks 12/17/08 1:44 AM
XP, tried the steps with the different version number.  No result.  Chrome starts, I see the window flash briefly, and then immediately exits.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Matt Bell 12/18/08 1:00 PM
I don't even see the window briefly... there's an egg-timer on the mouse as if it starts to do something, but nothing happens!
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Shawn (Googler) 12/22/08 2:37 PM
@ Matt Bell, iambg, randrewcocks: There are a few programs that may currently conflict with Google Chrome and will cause the behavior you're observing (some are ctfmon.exe, citivan.exe, LanCesk management etc). You can try removing these or following the instructions listed out in the below thread. Let me know how that pans out.

Shawn
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) JoshuaJ 12/23/08 6:25 AM
*Please* simply "remove ctfmon.exe," as the previous post seems to imply. Microsoft's website says, "Removing Ctfmon.exe might cause problematic behavior in your Office XP programs, so removing it is not recommended." The link that Shawn references has instructions from Microsoft on how to properly get rid of ctfmon so that other Office programs won't be expecting to find it.

Incidentally, as part of Office, ctfmon is probably running on 90% of all Chrome users' systems (including mine), and most of them work just fine (including mine). If it's really causing the problem, does anyone know why it affects so few users?
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Rolloutman 12/28/08 8:19 PM
I've encounter the same problem.
After running a windows update, Chrome no longer works  :-(
I've followed all the procedures listed above ...
including running
"%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\1.0.154.36\Installer\setup.exe" --rename-chrome-exe
after reinstalling the latest version of chrome.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.  I was just starting to enjoy using Chrome.

I have the same problem, Chrome used to work fine but all of a suden it just won't launch at all.  I see the Chrome.exe appear in the task manager than it just disapears 1 second later.  I tried to change the compatibility to Windows 2000 and it worked fine, but if I remove the compatibility option it stops working again.

I have Windows XP, this is very annoying.......
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) gzboli 1/6/09 6:38 PM
The above solution did not work for me. I'll post what *did* work, though it makes no sense. I opened the Visual Studio 2005 command prompt and entered the absolute path to chome.exe ... And magically the problem went away. o_O
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Matt Bell 1/9/09 10:53 AM
Strangley enough, gzboli, I uninstalled a few programs before Chrome stopped working... and one of them was Visual Studio 2005.
After that Chrome refused to work at all.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) TomS 1/16/09 9:30 PM
After I found the comand line for Vista, realized I needed find the numbers in the path and change them to version number on my system and that I had to copy from first " to end of exe, it worked.

P.S. Why did this happen and should I expect it to happen again? Did MS do this on purpose as part of windows update?
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Bouldurr 1/20/09 6:37 PM
im still having this problem and i have tried all the above advice.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) mikes.bowen 1/23/09 10:39 PM
I really hope you fix this soon.  I have ctfmon.exe running as part of MS Office, but I have had it running for a long time.  Why are the crashes starting now?  I LOVE Chrome - I don't want to go back.... please fix this!!
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) snedaja 1/28/09 4:12 AM
I woke up this morning to this issue as well....clicked on the Chrome shortcut, saw the app briefly flash on the screen and then nothing.  I am back up now, using a few of the suggestions.  Here's what I did:

1. re-installed chrome from chrome.google.com (did not un-install first, just installed on top of current) -- this didn't fix it
2. ran the command line instruction from above (I think I was in version hell at this point because I noticed two versions under my \Local Settings....Chrome and also a reference to \Program Files.....Chrome.  So, the command line didn't work for me either.
3. I un-installed Chrome using the Start menu pick item.
4. I shutdown, took the battery out (laptop), restarted and installed Chrome from chrome.google.com.

Happy to say that I am posting this (my first post!) using Chrome!!
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) t_roach 1/31/09 10:55 AM
this happened to me about a month ago. after i installed a new version on top of the old one, it started working about. now it won't open again.

trying a complete un-install and re-install.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) t_roach 1/31/09 11:11 AM
worked.

now posting using Chrome!
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Ramia 2/2/09 10:23 AM
this happened to me after doing latest live updates.
uninstalled and reinstalled with no change. Also tried using above suggestion to rename chrome, with no change.
Then tried complete shut down of computer.
Took out battery, and restarted the computer.

VERY happy to report I am now posting using Chrome!!

Do I need to be aware of future updates and issues related? I've been using Chrome from the beginning and do not want to go back.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Bluedog 2/3/09 5:56 AM
I tired the above over and over again, using my version number and only after I ran the suggested script AND did a reinstall (after an uninstall) did the problem go away. I wish I could relate the order I did it in, but after awhile I was simply flailing madly. Eventually some combination worked.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) bobkeefer 2/11/09 5:54 AM
This worked for me, but only after I open a command window and went to the actual directory where 'setup.exe' is located, and then ran the last part:
setup.exe --rename-chrome-exe
But it did work!  Finally!  Thanks.  How can I avoid this in the future????
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) rogerdpack 2/12/09 4:21 PM
For me --rename-chrome-exe never worked.
However, for some odd reason [I don't know if this is safe but...]
deleting
"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\First Run" caused chrome to run again.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Mr. Marc 2/17/09 1:44 PM
Renaming/deleting the file "First Run" was the only thing that fixed this for me. You can find it at the following:

%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) JeffoLS 2/21/09 7:37 AM
I have tried all of the suggestions listed above and nothing works yet.  When I try the text suggested in the run window the window just closes without seemingly doing anything.

It may be that you have too many bookmarks -- after deleting one [it was the only change I made before it stopped opening] by using the delete "first run" trick to start Chrome, I was able to start Chrome normally.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Mark T. 3/31/09 9:13 PM
I encountered this problem on a Sunday, with Chrome working well on that Friday.  I looking into the Program Files, it appears that Google Updater automatically updated  to 1.0.154.53 on Saturday morning.  This created a file called "new_chrome" in addition to the original app file named "chrome".

I tried Shawn's suggested fix to rename the chrome.exe file, but received a warning that the pathway did not exist.

I fixed the problem by going to Computer-> Program Files-> Google-> Chrome-> Applications.  I right-clicked on the "new_chrome" folder, selected rename, then re-named it "chrome".  I got a window informing me that this path already existed, I clicked yes/accept.  I renamed the app file "chrome (2), and now it opens!

For the time being, I have gone into advanced options on Google Updater and de-selected the automatic update feature.  I think I'd prefer to periodically manually search for updates and download at will.

I am using Vista Business SP 1, 32-bit.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) lyall 4/3/09 2:20 PM
I've tried everything listed here but nothing works. To Mark T., I can see application but no applications; I do not see a "new_chrome" folder.! So I am stuck, no Chrome to use; when I try to run Chrome all it does is flash for a split second and nothing---does anyone out there have any other ideas??? Anything to help please. BTW, I see a folder 1.0.154.53, so this but be the last update.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) lyall 4/3/09 2:21 PM
so this must be the latest update :)
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Shawn (Googler) 4/3/09 3:38 PM
Hey guys,

There's an existing thread about this that's similar. You can find the original thread in the below reference. I've included a snippet of my response below.

Can you test to see if your user profile may be corrupted? To determine this:

1. Right-click on the Google Chrome Desktop Shortcut icon and view Properties.
2. In the Target field, add --user-data-dir="Test" to the end so that the entire Target field reads as: "C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --user-data-dir="Test". Make sure that there is a space between "chrome.exe" and "--user-data-dir" and that you fill in your user name. Adjust as necessary for Vista.
3. Click OK.
4. Try opening Google Chrome with the desktop shortcut. If successful, your Google Chrome user profile may be corrupted.

Ok, so if you can do all of the above and have determined that your user profile is corrupted, you'll need to re-create your profile from scratch. To do this,

1. Rename your 'Default' folder to 'Backup'
You can find the 'Default' folder in the following locations:

Windows XP: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\
Windows Vista: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\
User Data\

2. Move the 'Backup' folder
If Google Chrome continues to crash, move your newly renamed 'Backup' folder from the 'User Data' directory up one level to the 'Chrome' directory.

3. If that still doesn't work, does a manual uninstall and reinstall work?

Thanks,
Shawn

Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Santhana 4/7/09 4:21 AM
1. Restart your computer.
2. BEFORE starting google chrome, uninstall google chrome using Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
3. Download and install google chrome from google's web site.
4. Problem solved!

NOTE: In step 2, if you start google chrome first, then uninstall won't work, and step 3 (installing latest version of google chrome) won't work either!
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) lyall 4/10/09 8:47 AM
To Mark T. and Shawn and all others:::I was concerned about losing saved sites so was trying for a fix; after trying all, I decided to do the uninstall provided with Chrome. After the uninstall I shut the computer down.!(My way of doing "things"). Powered computer back up, reinstalled Chrome from the Google web site and Chrome ran as it should and all saved sites were there. So, this is what worked for ME. Thanks to all.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) hansen 4/23/09 5:26 PM
I have tried all of the above and Chrome will still not load, I get the hourglass and then no action.

I also can not open internet explorer or any other browser.  I am very lost at this point any help????
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) subzro85 4/27/09 9:26 PM
Are there any new developments on this?  I started having the same problem today.  I've been using Chrome without any problems for months now.  Today I opened Firefox to access a site which didn't support Chrome (stupid Time Warner Cable) and all of a sudden Chrome stopped working.  I got the Aw Snap screen, closed the browser, and haven't been able to reopen since.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled a dozen times and followed all of the suggestions posted here, and only succeeded in making things worse.  Now, I think because of something I deleted (maybe "first run"?), I can't even properly reinstall Chrome.  Every time I try I get the "Google Chrome has encountered a problem and needs to close" screen.

Help, please!
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) JusteMe 5/1/09 11:13 AM
In general this works
"%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\0.4.154.29\Installer\setup.exe" --rename-chrome-exe
Make sure you type your actual version number.
BUT,if necessary, TRANSLATE.
For my Italian version XP I had to run this:
"%USERPROFILE%\Impostazioni locali\Dati applicazioni\Google\Chrome\Application\1.0.154.59\Installer\setup.exe" --rename-chrome-exe

Thank you

Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) ahenobarbus 5/13/09 6:39 PM
Happened to me today, after I downloaded the latest Microsoft updates...not sure if that's why. I've tried some of the fixes above, but none have worked. I fail to understand how you can tell what version of Chrome you have if Chrome won't open. I tried searching the program files and the Google folder in there, but see nothing about Chrome.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Gabrys 5/15/09 12:18 AM
when My chrome has not start I do:
1. rename user profile Default  to  bak
2. run "...setup.exe" --rename-chrome-exe
- info popup will be wisible
3. run Chrome from desktop icon
- it's running OK. and auto create new clear Default user profile
4. Close Chrome
5. Rename new created profile Default to any name
6. Re-Rename old DEFAULT (prewiously renamed as bak) to Default user profile folder
7. start chome again and it's Work! and my Chrome settings and User Stored DATA will be restored!!
BINGO - That's ALL
Good Luck.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) whoffkne 5/28/09 4:44 PM
So the "setup" thing works for me, but only for awhile and the I have to do it again after awhile, like after a restart or after Windows does an update.  It happened with Chrome 1 and I thought that would be fixed with Chrome 2, but it is not, it is still doing it.

Once I do the "setup" command, it works for awhile perfectly well, but then not.

I am using XP, SP3.

Is this ever going to be fixed?  I like your browser a lot, but I cannot run an extra command every time I want to open it...
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) UtahFlyFisher 6/7/09 8:27 PM
I tried everything listed above and nothing works. This sucks big time. I expect crappy software from Micro$oft but not Google.

*sigh*

I guess it is back to Firefox to me, unless you can come up with a fix. I am not too hopeful, as it appears this problem has existed for months now, and nothing has fixed it permanently.

Criminy. If you can't get your browser to work, you guys are as bad as M$ on this.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) tomsteel 6/8/09 8:08 AM
I managed to get Chrome working again by making a copy of Chrome.exe in the same folder ("copy of Chrome.exe") which runs fine.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) UtahFlyFisher 6/8/09 6:02 PM
Ok. So this is weird. I discovered that the problem on my machine is simply my desktop shortcut to chrome.exe. Running chrome.exe from its own folder works - just double clicking on it. However, running it from a desktop shortcut did NOT work, even though in the properties of the shortcut, the "Target:" path and  "Start in:" path were correct. So, I simply created a desktop .bat file with the following:

cd %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application
chrome.exe

And when running that batch file it works. Somebody a lot smarter than me can possibly answer why running from a desktop shortcut doesn't work, and a simple batch file does. It should be obvious, but I am not too knowledgeable on these things.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) swintgs 6/9/09 5:40 PM
Speculation...Might be a problem with chrome peeking at the command (argv[0]) used to run it

I had the same behavior as UtahFlyFisher in that I could run chrome.exe from its own directory but not from my quick launch shortcut. I dropped to the command line and tried executing the shortcut manually. This worked, and afterwards I could use the Quick Launch...shortcut but only once!

But by renaming the shortcut from chrome.exe.lnk to chrome.lnk, I was able to avoid that.

My fix:

Windows+R to bring up the Run dialog and then run "cmd"
>cd "%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"
>rename chrome.exe.lnk chrome.lnk

Now the shortcut works for me. If your shortcut is on the desktop, you'll need to use this CD command
>cd "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop"
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) mikekane7391 6/11/09 12:22 PM
typing this into run worked for me, ONLY after changing the version 0.4.154.25 to mine (2.0.172.31). Typed into RUN and everything is fine.

 "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\0.4.154.25\Installer\setup.exe" --rename-chrome-exe
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) BandTrumpet7 6/12/09 10:19 PM
Nothing works for me.  I have the same problem as above.

I installed the beta version a long time back, it worked fine.  One day I started it up and noticed it had stopped working.  I did some research and figured out that the actual version had been released, so I uninstalled the beta and installed the newest version.  But I still had the same problems.  I click the icon, and it looks like it's going to load (the cursor gets a little hourglass next to it) for about a second, and then "Google Chrome has encountered a problem and needs to close."  Argh!  Frustrating.

I've tried all the suggestions above, and nothing works.  It still resolutely refuses to start.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times, have gone through and removed programs that might be conflicting (including McAfee Enterprise, which I know I had before and it worked with Google Chrome), and still no luck.  Any help?  :(
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) parthabha 6/12/09 11:30 PM
Same problem for me. It started last night when I was uploading some important files to ZoneAlarm Backup which is a part of service that ZoneAlarm Extreme Security package offers.

For more than a year I use the ZA Internet security pack... never faced problem with Chrome. Only last night it happened while using the backup for the first time. I tried all suggestions mentioned here but so far no positive result.

I'm scared that I'll loose the bookmarks I'd in Chrome. Please suggest how I can retrieve the bookmarks... I can live w/o Chrome for awhile, but the bookmarks are very important for me. Can anyone help..!
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) fixed 6/14/09 1:51 PM
I tried all of above and then, based on  tomsteel's post, I renamed the chrome.exe file and all seems well now.  Renaming the file also changed the file name in my shortcuts so the shortcuts also work.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) fryte 6/17/09 12:13 PM
If you are using Vista or Windows 7, there is no Local Settings folder. You need to use C:\Users\[[your username]]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\2.0.172.31\Installer, or switch out "2.0.172.31" for your Chrome version.
Hope this helps :)
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) tim_g 6/20/09 5:20 PM
MAKE SURE THE FILE PATH IS CORRECT!!!!!     Ditto fryte, make sure that the file path to the installer folder is correct, once i figured this out and put the correct chrome version into the run command chrome started working again. Had been mucking around with this for a while. Good luck
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Gin Tonic 6/24/09 6:09 AM
the advise of Mark T. worked for me. there is a file "new_chrome.exe" or something like this at this location
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\  (replace YOURNAME with your username)
I renamed the file new_chrome.exe into just chrome.exe, overwrited the original file, then run chrome, a window appeared telling me the google update complete or something like that and since then Chrome is running well OK.
Btw this happens to me quite often like every once a week or so, so far I always used to reinstall chrome, hope this will fix the prob once for all.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) jlegato 6/26/09 11:51 AM
This just started happening to me. I tried --rename-chrome-exe and it did not work for me.  So I located chrome.exe at C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\ and out of desperation renamed it in file explorer to chrome_x.exe and low and behold when I click the shortcut on my desktop it worked!  After renaming it (not sure it matters what you choose) the shortcut target changed automatically.

/love chrome btw

I recently got the same problem with version--2.0.172.37
So i typed  the below text in the run command and it worked for me. You just have to change the version if you are using any diff version to correct the problem( i am using 2.0.172.37).

"%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\2.0.172.37\Installer\setup.exe" --rename-chrome-exe

thanks Rohan, your text works for me.

Thanks Rohan - worked for me too.

I always try the easiest solution(s) first -- and renaming First Run allowed Google to start.  Sweet!

You can find First Run File here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application

...be sure to replace Your Name....with your name:-)  Example:

C:\Documents and Settings\Laura\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application

Good luck!

Same problem here...
The "...--rename" fix works.. for a while.
Every week or so my firewall alerts me that a program is doing something and it turns out to be chrome... I "allow" it (i'm assuming it's checking for updates... chrome may or may not be running at the time.. but then the next time I go to load chrome, it won't.
I usually fix it by reinstalling which only takes a few seconds but what a pain.. can we stop chrome from calling home and doing whatever it's doing?
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Zman150 8/13/09 11:42 AM
Two weeks ago my primary browser chrome stopped working. usually when I open it, it would show my history pages.  Now it just sits and spins.  I got the latest update, and it still didn't work.  I rebooted, and then it started to work for a couple hours, and now nothing.  I uninstalled and reinstalled several times, with reboots between all.  I've made sure i have the latest windows updates, and I've run the fix stated in this thread, but nothing works.  I'm running xp sp3.

I'm going to try the chrome beta to see if that works.  Anyone else having this issue with the latest version (2.0.172.39)??

I was using Chrome with Vista 64bit for a while when I suddenly started having having similar symptoms where Chrome would crash as soon as it launched. Long story short, Windows was  launching it in 'compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Srevice Pack 2)' for some reason.  Don't know how that got set but un-checking compatibility mode fix my problem. I have a couple of screencaps here if it helps: http://jon-craig.blogspot.com/2009/08/google-chrome-was-failing-on-windows.html
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) ShadowDrakken 9/11/09 4:58 PM
I had to use "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\3.0.195.20\Installer\setup.exe" --rename-chrome-exe to get it working sicne I'm using the Chrome 3 beta on Win7, but it did fix the problem.

Now the real question, what's causing it to stop working in the first place, and what is Google doing to fix their bug so that this won't have to be repeated?
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) nicknormal 9/30/09 7:29 PM
none of these tips/tricks work for me. i've been uninstalling and reinstalling chrome for over a week now!

when it launches, all it does is endlessly load... the tab has that spinning circle and it says, "Loading..." for hours, nothing happens.

I read one report on Yahoo! forums that it was a Microsoft patch that somehow stopped Chrome from launching. is this even possible!?

FTW!

same problem for me...loading and loading endlessly....and nothing worked to repair it..
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) ShadowDrakken 10/1/09 2:14 AM
The "Loading..." thing sounds like a different problem. Are you using the regular release, or the beta? On both Vista and Windows 7, the regular release is very broken, you'll want to make sure you use the beta instead.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Edoardo Allievi 10/1/09 2:29 AM
well actually it worked when i tried to determine if my user profile was corrupted as shawn said. but the re-creation of the user profile didn't work at all...
anyways with the  --user-data-dir="Test" addition it works...but obviuosly without my Chrome settings and User Store data that i'm not able to restore...

Is there a way to definitely fix this problem!?!?
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Edoardo Allievi 10/1/09 2:33 AM
i'm using 3.0.195.24 which is the last release in italian language...i don't think it's a beta..
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) ShadowDrakken 10/1/09 2:42 AM
yup, 3.0.195.24 is the current beta
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Spann0r 10/1/09 2:58 AM
guess what, this happened to me late last night also...
i'm also using 3.0.195.24 on xp sp3, last night i had a virus intrusion which i sorted, but the computer crashed, i've pretty much done everything above!
of course to make this interesting, my computer is spanish, although i'm in the uk, so knowing what its gibbering about is a bit hit or miss sometimes, but i've now worked out that its NOT anything to do with the profile or that 'default' folder in chrome.
so, to sum up, i have no home page now (if it helps i recently changed from the new (awful) view back to the 9-window plus recent bookmark view)
and nothing typed into the explorer bar has any effect
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Edoardo Allievi 10/1/09 3:13 AM
so if you add the --user-data-dir="Test" in the target filed of the Desktop Shortcut it's still not working?!because this way mine works...maybe it's a different problem then.
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Spann0r 10/1/09 3:23 AM
using --user-data-dir="Test" brought up the original homepage view, but when you tried to navigate (to anything) it still didnt work.

i have been wondering if my antivirus blocked anything to do with chrome at the time of the crash, but looking in the Avira reports, the quarantined files seem not to be connected.
i must say, however, there were more intrusions than i first thought!
(thank you to Farmville on Facebook for lagging my computer out so i wasn't clicking and what i thought i was clicking on!)
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Edoardo Allievi 10/1/09 7:38 AM
maybe we should open a new discussion on this loading problem...
Re: Chrome won't start (used to work fine) Shawn (Googler) 10/5/09 3:05 PM
Hey guys,

For the loading issues, can you please create a new thread so that we can isolate different issues?

Also, we believe we have resolved the original issue with our latest version. We'll be marking this thread as outdated. If you continue to experience issues launching Google Chrome after a possible update, please start a new thread.

Shawn
