Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. tsb 5/4/09 12:24 PM
I have read the form extensively and have seen this issue but no fix that has worked.  Specific issue is:  opening link in email results in error message "The operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.  Contact your system administrator".  I'm the administrator. Have Vista and Outlook 2007, use Internet Explorer.

Have tried the following posted solutions:
1) Tried system restore to earlier time
2) Reset browser to IE via: tools, internet options, default browser
3) Re-installed Chrome, reset default browser, uninstalled Chrome (uninstall through control panel, programs)

Nothing has worked.

Anyone got another option?

Thanks

Exactly my problem as well.  Using Vista and Outlook 2007.  I'm very frustrated.  Couldn't find anything in the Start - default programs that addressed the hyperlink issues inside an email.  Everything seems to be set to Firefox or IE and none of it works now.

What if outlook has all it's default...what then?

Answer has been found.  I owe 2much who posted the answer to question:  How do you successfully uninstall chrome from vista basic w/out creating link problems.  Worked like a charm!

Solution:
Went to www.modzilla.com and downloaded the firefox browser.
Turned on the browser. It automatically makes itself the default browser.
Turn off foxfire
Turn on MS IE. when the prompt comes up to make IE the default browser, click "NO"
Open Tools-> Internet Options and click the "make Default" button ( I also checked the "Tell me if IE is not the default browser" box
Close IE
Uninstall firefox
All your links should be reset now and your email program should be able to bring up IE links again
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. YdidIinstallChrome 5/8/09 12:09 AM
I have the same problem - I can't even get onto modzilla to download firefox! (site is forbidden on this server error message).

I've tried resetting my internet options, have already set IE and Outlook as my default and still can't click on any links on email. This is after I installed Chrome, then uninstalled it from Programs via Control Panel.

Is Google going to fix?? I Googled the error message and it says something about a missing registry key but I'd have to export the right key from another computer. Hello, don't have another computer to export from.

Any one with any other ideas to fix???
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. nakro 5/8/09 12:16 AM
@Ydidiinstall....

can you please provide info on what error you are getting, the exact error
also, just to be on the safe side, make sure you did the following

go to internet explorer
tools->internet options->programs
and there there is a button called make default

if you have outlook open, close it after you set Internet explorer as your default browser
and re-open it

if this does not solve the problem, please try this

start->set programs defaults (i have non english windows, so i am not 100% how it appears in english, i am translating....)

and look at outlook, and there should be an option to give this program all its defaults
if you can find it, this should fix it all

let us know what solved it if any....
it shall be fixed....

The Mozilla Firefox worked for me. Mozilla was forbidden on my PC. I queried on Firefox and was taken to Mozilla and was able to download Firefox 3. Followed the instructions posted by tsb.
Sorry nakro i followed all of your excellent text book responses before resorting to the Mozilla fix.
I am uk based and there is no indication that Chrome is a beta version. this upsets me especially because I have wasted 4 hours

Well, after realizing what they did to my system, I've tried:
1. reinstall chrome, set IE as default, then uninstall.  no love.
2. install firefox, set IE as default.  no love.
3. I even reinstalled IE (upgraded to v8) as microsoft suggests.  NOTHING.

Whatever happened to google's 'don't be evil' mantra?  Farking up someone's system to the point a reinstall of the OS is nessesary is pretty freaking evil in MY books.  I mean seriously, this is a WEB browser.  it should not break fundamental OS links.  Wow.

Thanks a million for the post.  I was so frustrated when my hyperlinks in Outlook would not work after dowloading Chrome.  Your post cured the problem.  Thanks again.  And by the way, why would Google release something that would disable hyperlinks?  Makes me sceptical about trusting Google in the future.
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. elem 5/22/09 11:40 PM
Having battled with every 'fix' I could fine on the web, none of which worked I finally did what has been suggested.
1. Reinstalled Google Chrome
2. Made it the default browser
3. In IE8 Internet options > programe > I then made IE the default browser.
4.In default programmes (found from the serch box) I changed everything that Chrome was trying to open back to its relevat progamme
5. My hyperlinks from Outlook are now working again.
6. Mozilla does not highjack it is Chrome.
7. I am leaving it there in my prrogamme files - but will not use it - just in case the problem reoccurs.

Thank goodness all is fine again because it has caused me untold problems not to be able to click a hyperlink in Outlook 2007 and to receive the rediculous message when I tried to do so.

Thank goodness for this thread.  I have windows XP, purposely ordered on my new computer because Vista kept freezing up and I have had the same issues.  Turned off Google Chrome because of issues with Java and Adobe Flash.  Now I can no longer use the hyperlinks.  I will try the fixes and keep my fingers crossed.
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. stactom17 5/28/09 5:36 PM
After installing Chrome it makes itself the default browser.
Then deleting Chrome and making IE the default browser the hyperlinks stop working.
Reinstall Chrome and make it the default browser.
While Chrome is installed go to IE and make it the default browser.
Links in Outlook will work.

Restore registry settings in the User Profile
1. Click Start, click Run, type Regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

2. Locate the following subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.html

3. On the File menu, click Export.

4. In the Export Registry File dialog box, enter HKCU_Classes_HTML_Backup.reg and click Save.

Note: This will create a backup of this registry key in the My Documents folder by default.

5. Right click the (Default) value for the .html key and select Modify...

6. Change the value from "ChromeHTML" to "htmlfile"

Repeat steps 1-6 for .htm and .shtml keys if they exist, remember to change the name of your backup file for each export.

Hey everyone,

We've heard the many reports from you that desktop shortcuts, hyperlinks (in Outlook), etc aren't working after uninstalling Google Chrome. I just wanted to jump in with a quick explanation to clear up any confusion. Please note that if you set Google Chrome as your default browser and later uninstall it, your computer can no longer locate what was the default browser (i.e. Google Chrome) for opening links or file types associated with webpages such as .html, .htm, etc and therefore generates an error.

Thanks to the users in this thread (nakro, nondescript, stactom17, and tsb) for helping out with various solutions. If any of the above instructions do not work for you, please let us know!

Cheers,

Toni

GOOGLE - Make a downloadable executable that fixes this or you are going to p*&s off a LOT of people.  Why should we all waste our time fixing problems on our systems caused by your software !?
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. ChrisNeary 6/18/09 8:02 AM
I agree with "itserve" above.
Many users will not find this fix and will badmouth Google accordingly - surely that can't be an acceptable solution !
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. TedHoward 6/18/09 8:31 AM
Between this and the Google recent Apps Sync fiasco, it is clear that Google has serious problems making software. How did the test matrix not include testing uninstalling Chrome on a default Windows configuration? Better yet, was there a test matrix or test plan at all? Spec for the installer?
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. valvesound 6/30/09 9:14 PM
With the winning combination of google designing this thing to be installed without admin rights (gee, thanks guys- not) and users who click on anything, we now have a company where half the users cannot open links in their browser from Outlook, we had to block google chrome from running or downloading using a GPO as we were not about to go set proxy settings on it for them.

Where is the fix, google? We are almost at the point of re-imaging PCs at enormous inconvenience. Thanks for nothing!
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. valvesound 7/2/09 4:40 PM
Well I found a fix that works for a multiuser environment on IE7...

1) Log in as the limited-rights user
2) Uninstall Chrome
3) In My Computer, go to Tools->Folder Options->File types
4) Select Filetype (NONE) URL : Hypertext Transfer Protocol, click Advanced
5) Click Edit then Browse to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
6) Change the icon back to a blue E!
7) Repeat steps 4&5 with Filetype (NONE) Hypertext Transfer Protocol with Privacy
9) Click ok, then open IE7 and download IE8 installer exe to the desktop
10) Do a run-as admin and install IE8

What a mission.
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. sred13 7/13/09 8:28 PM
I had a similar problem with a user, this was caused by a users file association with html and other files not being associated with a browser.

Verify that this is the case through the associations panel from Explorer->Tools->Folder Options->File Types.
If the browser of choice is no listed for html and other files, try restoring using Set Program Access and Defaults, available on the Start Menu in a WinXPP install and also in administrative tools.

Why it works:
in my experience, uninstalling Chrome will not reset file associations to their preinstall state.  Normally users are prevented from opening web pages in other browsers, which is why the prompt for "Set this browser to default" from Iexplore isn't working.

Worked for me.

Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. Sub7 10/13/09 10:16 AM
I think the main issue is due to code injection in IE mostly due to multitread model. I think above steps tried in a sequence does help, just that depending upon the setup done on IE structure and build it works randomly.

hi pgronk,

I dont think anyone knows where this was coded, I think it was very much by US. Dont know why you have to be so recial about everything? Anyways there is always a diff perceptions.
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. Tozzano 11/16/09 9:06 PM
Thanks to nodescript's post, it's fixed for me with Windows 7, Chrome uninstalled, and Outlook 2007.
Run Regedit.
Locate the following subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.html
Right click the (Default) value for the .html key and select Modify...
Change the value from "ChromeHTML" to "htmlfile"
Repeat for .htm and .shtml keys if they exist

You can also do a "find" in regedit for ChromeHTML and it will take you to each occurrence.

Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. rmwoolfson 11/21/09 4:37 AM
This appears to be a serious problem. I have read through the various suggestions. I managed to "alleviate" the problem (which affected my entire compuer and not just Outlook). I am surprised that Google has not provided proper advice. I urge Google to do so!

I did a system restore to a point shortly after I installed Chrome. I then clicked on a link and got the Chrome install message which I ACCEPTED. The alternative, I reckon, is install Google Chrome once again (which I admit is counter intuitive).

The links then started working again (via Chrome). I then altered the default browser back to Internet Explorer (Tools/Internet Options). When I click on a link, Internet Explorer opens the link.

This appears to be working satisfactorily.
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. Toni (Googler) 12/6/09 5:25 PM
Hey guys,

This problem should be resolvable by choosing another default browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox) after uninstalling Google Chrome. If you did set a new default browser while having MS Outlook open, you might've had to restart MS Outlook for the changes to take effect. Can you try that to see if that was the reason?

If that still didn't work for you, and you had to resort to editing registry keys instead, can you tell us what Google Chrome version you're on as well as what operating system you're using?

Thanks,

Toni

Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. SHANE.BRUEGGER 12/29/09 7:29 AM
Resetting the default browser will not fix this problem. htm, html, shtml files have been renamed to chromehtm, chromehtml etc. The chrome uninstaller should have included a few more lines of code.

Save this code in a word doc. Save as chromehtml.doc rename the file to chromehtml.reg. Double click the file it will automatically edit the registry. Reboot and the hyper links will work in outlook.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.htm]
@="htmlfile"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.html]
@="htmlfile"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.shtml]
@="htmlfile"

Or you can go through and change each one individually, me I dont have time for all that.
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. -Z- 1/5/10 3:13 PM
I'm working at a company now where Chrome deinstallation screwed up all file associations in Outlook. It took more than an hour to fix this (at least 3 occasions sofar), so we did a fresh installation of the complete system.

Imho a major BUG! Now we've blocked the downloading of Chrome thru the company firewall and advised no one to install it (and if they did, DONT deinstall it).
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. AlleluiaPTLord 1/15/10 2:29 PM
I am runnung Vista Home Premium with Outlook 2003 and IE8.  After trying Google Chrome I decided to uninstall. This I did. I then found
that when I clicked on hyperlinks on emails in Outlook they would not connect with the target websites. I would get the message " This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administartor"  .
The only way I have rectified  this problem is as follows. (This has been well documented in previous blogs.)
1.             Go to site such as filehippo.com   Go to heading Browsers and Plugins and download Firefox browser.
2.             Install Firefox. Click on Firefox icon and open the browser.  Check to make sure in Tools menu item that Firefox is the default
                 browser.
3.             Turn off Firefox browser by clicking on X in top right hand corner of screen.
4.             Turn on IE  (Internet Explorer browser) by clicking on its icon.
5,             Should a prompt come up to make it default browser click "NO".
6.             Open Tools on IE > Internet options > Programs and click "Make Default" . Also put tick in box against "Tell me if IE is not the
                 default browser".
7.             Close IE browser by clicking X in top right hand corner of screen .
 8.             Go to settings > Control Panel>   Programs> Uninstall a program.  Look for Modzilla Firefox. Highlight this software and at up part
                of page click uninstall.
 9.             When you check your Outlook hyperlinks you will now find they work.

Blest wishes to everyone who finds this helpful.

Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. pecanpie 1/18/10 1:05 PM
Excellent, it works, but Google needs to fix the email link problem before continuing to offer google chrome to anyone else. It's a headache and causes anxiety; unnecessary stress.
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. PeterSpev 3/21/10 8:32 AM
Same basic problem here with hyperlinks not working in Microsoft Office documents. We just banned google chrome from all computers. And sent out a tech warnings. It's really shocking that the google chrome response is so lame. Let me quote Toni Googler: "This problem should be resolvable by choosing another default browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox) after uninstalling Google Chrome." Should? Give me a break. Do your work Google Chrome we've lost hundreds of man hours on this.

Finally we had to go in and fix individual registries. This is Google Chrome install and uninstall which is causing links to not work in Outlook 2007 and Microsoft Office documents. It is resetting the registries in such a way as to make hyperlinks in Office Documents unworkable. As a tech neutral guy, the Google Chrome blaming MSFT is completely wrong.
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. Jim2000 3/25/10 9:02 AM
None of the above worked, so we assumed the registry was corrupt beyond repair.  This was on a Windows 2003 terminal server, so re-install was out of the question.
Interesting thing is that one user managed to install unknowingly to herself and as a non-administrator.  No other users were affected.
The fix was to recreate (rename the old and copy data to new) that particular user profile.
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. vpoleshuck 3/26/10 2:26 PM
If you don't want to muck about in the registry and you have enough hard drive space, simply reinstalling Chrome is an answer that works.  It's not necessary to use it as your default browser--I'm using Safari--but the reinstallation was all it took to turn on the links in Outlook, and they work in IE as well as in Safari.  I've deleted the desktop link to Chrome; no way will I use this defective browser again, but I have to leave it installed to keep the links working.  Google should be ashamed, and from reading how long this problem has been going on, they should have fixed it long ago.

5. Click the button Make Default
6. Re-open Outlook. All link should be working normally again.

Do people realise that what appears here as an Outlook problem also disables hyperlinks in Excel? There are other threads on other forums about this - The main answer is to install Chrome again, which is the one that worked for me.

Google really need to make a fix available and publicise it.
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. TimBarsotti 5/12/10 11:00 AM
I use Windows 7 and none of the above helped resolve the issue.

I resolved this issue by running CCleaner on the registry. (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner)

After I ran CCleaner on the registry, I opened the ‘default programs’ -> ‘set default programs’ -> click internet explorer -> ‘set this program as default’

Vista Home, Outlook 2007, IE8

Had IE7, installed Chrome and hated it. Uninstalled and installed IE8. Outlook went to crap like everyone else. Systematically tried every fix on this site plus some: reinstall and unintstall Chrome, set IE as default, regedit, CCleaner, program defaults. After all these for the heck of it I retried:
1. Close Outlook.
2. Open Internet Explorer
3. From the menu bar select: Tools->Internet options
4. Click the programs tab
5. Click the button Make Default
6. Re-open Outlook. All link should be working normally again.

bugger if it didn't work this time. Cheers

Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. cjpower7 10/1/10 12:21 PM
I have had this happen on my system (running XP) twice and on a friends system that was running Vista. What finally worked with Vista was installing the new beta IE 9.0. On my XP machine I followed the instructions from Google about changing the registry values after removing Chrome...but that didn't work, and I had reset my default browser countless times without success. I read the solution about installing and uninstalling Firefox, but I like to use both Firefox and IE for different reasons so I did not like the idea of removing Firefox and reinstalling etc. so I did the following and it worked for me...(I am using Firefox version 3.6.10) Close Outlook...
Open Firefox>Tools>Options>Advanced>General Tab>System Defaults...Select "always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on start up" and then press the check now button, when prompted, select YES and close the browser. Now open IE>Tools>Internet Options>Programs Tab> Click on Make Default Browser.Close browser and reopen Outlook and ta-dah...well...that worked for me. Good Luck!

I followed the instructions in Post #2 but still had chrome taking over the hyperlinks..........so I uninstalled chrome and the problem was gone. Google should pull up their socks and not have their browser taking over anything unless it is required specifically by the user.

Chrome sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am running Vista. I tried modifying the registry and that either did not help or did not completely fix the issue. I used "nakro

Uber Chromie

suggestion and set the default browser under tools. That seems to have resolved the issue. Maybe you have to do both. Kind of hard to believe that a company like Google could have overlooked this little matter. Keep that in mind when deciding on who's products you buy.

Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. tep585 1/20/11 11:12 AM
Maybe I missed it in one of the posts, but the most common cause of the link problem is a corrupt registry key in Internet Explorer. The registry key found at  HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command is either damaged or corrupt. Microsoft has a simple fix for the problem here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310049. Or go here http://www.slipstick.com/problems/link_restrict.htm and read about the various methods to edit the registry after CHROME destroys it.

Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. gitta298 2/7/11 8:27 AM
None of the email links worked  after I uninstalled Chrome. I found an easy way to fix it: Make Firefox your default browser by going to tools, options, advanced, check the box: Always check to see if Firefox is your default browser on start up, then "Check Now". Now everything is working again.
Re: Outlook issues - links not working after google chrome uninstall. hitech7225 3/19/11 5:06 PM
I agree with most of the post. I too was evaluating Chrome. When I was done evaluating I uninstalled. Later I noticed my hyperlinks out of outlook were not working. Google above resonse is lame. Since I am in programming and architecture. I submit to them there uninstall is faulty and does not clean up properly after itself.
It is not resetting registry keys back to there original/defaults settings before the install. The fact is a normal user even reseting the IE default from the GUI has no affect. This would require a normal user to go in and modify his registry manually to put the change values back to the right type files or follow some install deinstall procedure that by the way of an opening allows you to reset the values by default as user "elem" described > both ways will work either the registy or the uninstall/install method described.
Chrome, fix your install/uninstall so that it is clean and does not leave wrong values on people's machine. Especially for regular users who buy into the your promotional and marketing schemes and download Chrome. This is a throw back to the old days when programmers did not cleanup always after their install/uninstall programs. With DOT NET and Nuke and todays other architectures available and the new programming suites this is inexcusable. Don't be lazy put out an update/patch and fix this.

I had tried chrome mainly out of interest & hoping that it would be faster (it's not faster or user-friendly and so I deleted it).  I didn't realise that it had affected my registry.  I also didn't realise that ie9 had defaulted back to ie8.  I have searched google and tried numerous solutions; all unsuccessful.  You explain your solution really well and your steps have been very easy to follow.  So many lost hours.  After doing all this, I nervously opened an email and clicked on the hyperlink.  It was like magic! . . . many thanks Nondescript

I had the same trouble.  It is not modzilla.com -- it is mozilla.com ...  take the "d" out and try the solution with Firefox again.

This is what worked for me:

 1. Uninstall Chrome if not already
 2. In My Computer, go to Tools->Folder Options->File types
 3. Select Filetype (NONE) URL : Hypertext Transfer Protocol, click Advanced
 4. Click Edit then type to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"
 5. Repeat steps 4&5 with Filetype (NONE) Hypertext Transfer Protocol with Privacy
 6. Open IE and reset as default.
 7. Try Outlook link again

So frustrating! I found the registry edit worked for me.  Take out any .htm that refers to Google Chrome.  What a waste of time!  Going googleeyed over google!
Cheers
