|No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||DKlovesjazz||6/9/12 1:31 AM|
For the past couple of days, when I try to play videos on CNet, IMBd, Hulu or any other online site in Chrome browser using my late 2011 13 inch MacBook Pro with Lion(Mac OS 10.7.4), I get audio only and a black screen, not even player controls are visible. Same video & audio plays fine in Safari on same computer. I have no issues playing web video on my 2006 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard(Mac OS 10.6.8) or my 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard. So what gives? what changed? Anyone have a solution. I'm sure i'm not the only one with this issue nor is Mac the only platform with this issue. Adobe says my Flash player is fine & that updates are automatically sent & installed in Chrome browser.

I have the same issue.
Only in Google Chrome Canary edition (21.0.1171.0), since the most recent 5-6 updates.
Dev edition (currently 21.0.1163.0) still works fine.
Both on Mac OS X 10.7.4

Also not able to view video on youtube, vimeo, etc. Wazzup wit dat???
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||The Polythene Symphonia||6/13/12 9:54 AM|
This issue is already fixed on Google Chrome Canary.
Now is the Dev edition that has no video.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||GaelDC||6/13/12 9:54 AM|
just relaunched Chrome after updating and seems to work now. Must have been a glitch that needed a patch, or something...
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||MaryandBaby||6/13/12 1:36 PM|
I ran MacKeeper, I re-launched Chrome. Some videos play video and sound, some do not. And now, on some things like Zynga Texas Hold 'Em Poker, and Muzy, I get a black screen or a white screen in the middle. In other words, Muzy comes up, I can see my pics and friends' pics but when I click on an app I get nothing. On things like Zynga Games I can accept gifts/chips etc but then when I click on "Play Game" I get nothing. Maybe I should just give up on CHrome and go back to Safari?

I had the same thing happen. I upgraded to Lion and now I can't watch videos. It makes me hate Mac. My Flash is updated and I'm using Chrome.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||GaelDC||6/13/12 4:48 PM|
I went to prefs in Chrome, clicked on help. Saw that my version needed updating, clicked update and relaunched. Seems to be working now. Worth a look at your prefs to be sire Chrome is up to date.

Can everyone please tell us what your Chrome version is and operating system is (if you haven't already)? Not knowing this prevents us from trying to troubleshoot.

I am using Chrome version 21.0.1171.0 dev on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.8 and am having the same problem. This has come up before when Chrome needs updating and has always been fixed by restarting Chrome. However, I am currently up-to-date and restarting has had no effect. Help??
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||Abraxis00||6/13/12 10:01 PM|
I'm having a similar issue, but it's not just videos. Anything Flash-related seems to be playing without being visible -- the basic window shows up without the Flash object appearing inside it. However, the audio still plays, and if there's anything clickable in the Flash, then clicking where it should be gets the regular results -- audible reactions, games letting me pick menu options (blindly), etc. I just updated Flash, which might have something to do with it -- there were no issues before.
Using a Mac Pro, OS X 10.7.4. Chrome reports itself to be the latest version, fully up to date.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||Abraxis00||6/13/12 10:07 PM|
Addendum to my last note: apparently, disabling Flash in chrome://plugins lets YouTube work normally, despite shutting off all other Flash-related items. Not sure why.
There are three versions of Flash listed on that page, for what it's worth. Disabling any one or two of them doesn't change anything, but disabling all three enables YouTube, as above. Full info copied from //plugins:
Name: Shockwave Flash
Name: Shockwave Flash

|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||GaelDC||6/14/12 6:44 AM|
Per post above, I am using a Mac 10.6.8, and updated Chrome Version 19.0.1084.56
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||elby2007||6/14/12 3:19 PM|
I should have noted that, like Abraxis00, YouTube videos aren't the only thing affected, and audio can still be played/paused by clicking where the control ought to be. The two most frequent examples of this I encounter are with YouTube videos (both on YouTube itself and embedded elsewhere on the web) and audio posts on Tumblr.

Chrome: 21.0.1171.0 dev
Flash player: 11.3.300.257 (problem occurs with Chrome builtin & external debug player)

|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||robhardt||6/14/12 10:28 PM|
As other users have indicated, disabling Flash causes youtube to serve HTML5 video which seems to work great, but as a Flash developer, it's a real pain to go back and forth.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||lukewarmmizer||6/15/12 9:16 AM|
I'm having the same issue, although one more interesting tidbit... if you happen to know where the fullscreen link is in a flash movie (I discovered by clicking randomly) the video will play in full screen, otherwise it's blank and all you get is audio. Will play in Webkit, Safari, Firefox, not Chrome.

|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||mbmills||6/15/12 11:08 AM|
I'm having an identical issue: black screen, audio only on all video. I tried the trick with finding the fullscreen link and that worked for me too: I can see the video only when I do that. Otherwise, only audio. I have tried reinstalling Chrome Dev a number of times.

Can you tell me whether disabling hardware acceleration helps? See the below YouTube help article for instructions on how to do so. Please tell us if it worked or not.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||iwantscholarback||6/18/12 3:44 PM|
I can't even get the setting menu as described in the link you posted
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||cat@billy||6/18/12 4:55 PM|
Turn off real-time protection if you are running Mackeeper from the top right hand menu. Have been trying to sort this problem out since I upgraded to 10.7.4 a couple of weeks ago since Safari, Chrome etc. went buggy and did not play any video (including flash). Tried everything, but this works.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||lavendula6654||6/18/12 7:31 PM|
I was not able to disable hardware accelerator from my Google Chrome Version 21.0.1171.0 dev.
Luckily the help link you posted mentioned at the bottom that we could disable hardware accelerator from a different browser. So I went to FireFox and disabled it from there.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||Toni (Googler)||6/19/12 10:36 AM|
@iwantscholarback, @lavendula6654 - Just to confirm, when you say you can't get the settings menu to come up, did you wait for the audio to start first before right-clicking on the video?
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||avemii||6/19/12 2:12 PM|
I have the same issue as well. I reinstalled flash and now have two flash extentions in Chrome:
Chrome version: Version 21.0.1171.0 dev
Not sure what to do here.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||Toni (Googler)||6/19/12 2:46 PM|
@avemii - Chrome comes with a built-in version of Flash already, so what you did was install the system version of Flash, and that's why 2 Flash files are listed. This issue is not resolved by uninstalling/reinstalling. Please see my Best Answer post about trying to disable hardware acceleration, and tell us if that worked instead. Thanks!
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||avemii||6/20/12 12:05 AM|
The latest chrome update fixed this issue.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||Hansaplast||6/20/12 8:14 PM|
Had the same problems for quite a while with my MacBook Pro.
I tried all possible tricks until I figured that (due to a hardware acceleration hint in this thread) that it might have to do with the dynamic GPU switching.
When I force my GPU to the crappy intel GPU, then I do NOT have this problem anymore.
I used http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus for that purpose (it's free).
For some reason Chrome automatically switches to the nVdia GPU,... but gfxCardStatus allows me to force to the inferior Intel chip.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||Nomad65||6/21/12 8:16 PM|
I'm having the same issue -- audio, no video, in Chrome, for all Flash. Safari works fine. I tried the suggestion above, but when I right-click and choose "Settings..." I hear my computer working but see nothing on the screen. (interestingly, when I choose "Global Settings.." I do get a pop-up window for setting those)
I tried to upgrade Chrome, as one user in this forum said that worked, but Chrome tells me it is up to date.
I hope this gets fixed soon. Switching to Safari for now.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||tahoekid||6/24/12 10:53 AM|
I'm seeing this as well. I was using Firefox and videos stopped working, so I moved over to Chrome, and I can hear audio but no video.
This has nothing to do with hardware, its been working up until a few days ago.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||martijnengler||6/24/12 10:59 AM|
I was having the same issue until about two days ago. I updated Chrome to the latest dev and it is finally fixed!
Running 21.0.1180.4 dev now.

Was on another page for flash problems and was told to come to this page. by Sie Dean. Supposedly it was merged here.. The problem we were having there doesn't seem to be the same one here.. This one is about sound with no visual. The one I was on was about ECHOS in the video ECHOS or sound distortion. How is this page going to merge the problem we were talking about there.. The last post there was 4 hours ago and the last post on this page was 8 days ago and i don't see Sie Dean's posts about anything here... Thanks for trying to help with Chrome problems
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||tahoekid||7/2/12 2:54 PM|
I think this may be a flash player issue, as it occurs in both Firefox and Chrome. I updated to the most recent version. It never works in Firefox, and occasionally works in Chrome, but not for long. When it stops I can hear sound, no video. I was watching MLB (Major League Baseball) highlight videos last night, sound, no video. I use Real Downloader which has a browser plugin to download flash - which works for the feeds (I cannot see the video in the browser, but after download, I can watch it in Real Player). Not sure what else to do.

|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||Abraxis00||7/6/12 6:48 PM|
I've updated to 20.0.1132.47 since my last report of this, and it's still happening. All the same symptoms -- no video, audio works fine, any buttons/links/whatnot within the Flash work fine (but are invisible), only whatever's in the background of the actual web page is shown.
Restarting Chrome seems to fix it for a while, but inevitably it starts happening again.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||UFOBBOP||7/6/12 7:27 PM|
I had two versions of flash player in chrome. I disabled one and tried youtube and still had the problem of ECHOS NOT INVISIBILITY. then i enabled the one that i had disabled and disabled the other and it fixed the problem.. It was not microsoft updates after all.. I'm done with it.. I was on a page about echos and got shifted to this page about invisible video with sound.. So much for trying to figure things out when sie deen or whoever kidnaps the topic and moves it where it doesn't belong

|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||piesforyou||7/10/12 12:26 PM|
I fixed this issue by disabling two of the three flash plugins I had listed in chrome://plugins
Someone else suggested disabling gcswf32.dll but that didn't work for me. I disabled all BUT gcswf32.dll, and that fixed the problem. To clarify, I disabled pepflashplayer.dll and NPSWF32_11_3_300_262.dll.

Hi Sie_Deen, my issue was resolved on the latest google chrome stable (20.0.1132.57 m). I'm back to using NPAPI gcswf32.dll (now at version 11.3 r300).
Sie_Deen, Yes you are right. I'm using an old flash player (ver 10.1 r102). I commented here as https://productforums.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/chrome/NNZD6VWWIVQ was mereged here as per Sie_Deen
Thanks Google Team.

I'm having the stuttering/echo problem too.
I'll be watching a Youtube video and maybe half way through the audio will start to stutter then start echoing in never ending loop.
I have a Macbook running Snow Leopard. Never had the issue before so I think it's a Chrome problem from one of the updates.
At first I thought it was related to Parallels, but the problem happened with Parallels not running too.
I just disabled/grayed out the extra Flash version in Chrome plug in settings
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||tahoekid||9/18/12 5:06 PM|
There is an ongoing crash bug in Adobe Flash for both Firefox and Chrome. It is getting better, but still happens a few times a week. I also have Real Downloader which is part of the problem - it also works - stops working every once in awhile. Hard to nail it all down since these are all plug-ins. I fixed my copy by uninstalling everything (browsers, Flash, Real player downloader) and then re-installing.

FIXED !!!!! GO TO chrome://plugins/ click details in flash(2 files) then disable the first file!
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||loupiote||10/31/12 4:30 PM|
using Chrome on Windows XP SP3 (dual code 2GHz)
the audio on youtube is distorted. the problem appeared a few weeks ago, likely caused by a chrome update.
the CPU usage is far from 100% when this happens (in fact, CPU use is less than 50%). i don't have any problems watching other videos including hi-res from other sources. but youtube plays bad / distorted audio, even with low-res videos (360p). that's really annoying.
i have the same problem that is described in this thread: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/NNZD6VWWIVQ%5B1-25%5D
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||loupiote||10/31/12 4:35 PM|
Note: same problem whether i enable or disable hardware acceleration in flash.
I have a ATI Radeon X850 graphic card.
(Internal DAC 400MHz, 256 MB Memory)
This card supports OpenGL 2.0.
|Re: No video, only audio in web video using Chrome browser||loupiote||10/31/12 5:08 PM|
PROBLEM RESOLVED: in about://plugins , there was two versions of flash plugin enabled:
Shockwave Flash 11.4 r31
Shockwave Flash 11.4 r402
disabling Shockwave Flash 11.4 r31 resolved the problem.
i double checked: if i re-enable Shockwave Flash 11.4 r31, the distorted / broken audio happens again.
i can't understand why Chrome would allow two flash plugins to be enabled at the same time, and clearly the older version is the one causing the problems.

I checked my plugins and found I too had two plugins enabled. I disabled the older one and audio is perfect. Sad that I have had this issue for many weeks on a non-critical computer and finally got around to researching it.
In my case the plugin versions are newer...
