The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash cadamy 1/8/09 6:40 AM
When using Chrome, especially when I'm reading Gmail, my machine begins to operate very slowly and often locks up.  I then sometimes get a "The following plug-in has crashed: Shockwave Flash" message. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of Flash several times.  I'm at the point where I'm going to go back to Firefox or (gasp!) Explorer, it's become such a problem.  Help.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Shawn (Googler) 1/28/09 5:33 PM
Hey guys,

Let's see if we can figure this one out. Can you help out with some additional information?

- What version of Flash are you running?
- What version of Chrome are you running?
- What version of Windows are you running?
- Do you have the same problems running Flash in Firefox?
- What other plugin processes do you have running (open 'page' menu > developer > task manager)?
- What kind of anti-virus system are you running?
- Can you reproduce this consistently on a particular site (URLs help)?
- Do you get the "plugin unresponsive" dialog, or does the plugin just crash?

Thanks for your help guys!
Shawn
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash markjwilson 1/28/09 5:50 PM
- What version of Flash are you running? Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin
- What version of Chrome are you running? 1.0.154.43
- What version of Windows are you running? XP Pro with SP3
- Do you have the same problems running Flash in Firefox? No.
- What other plugin processes do you have running (open 'page' menu > developer > task manager)? I didn't notice.
- What kind of anti-virus system are you running? AVG Free
- Can you reproduce this consistently on a particular site (URLs help)? I haven't tried.
- Do you get the "plugin unresponsive" dialog, or does the plugin just crash? I don't know. I notice that my machine is slow and that one Chrome process is taking half my CPU (I have a dual processor system). So I kill that process.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Bapabooiee 1/28/09 5:54 PM
The exact same thing happens to me. But one thing I would like to note that I find odd is that after this happens (and I tell the dialog that pops-up to kill Flash), the Task Manager for Chrome becomes unavailable. I right-click somewhere on Chrome, and the "Task Manager" button is grey'd-out (even if the manager isn't running).

Unresponsive plugins shouldn't bring the entire browser down =[ If the plugin starts acting-up (which only happens in Chrome), the entire Chrome sessions becomes unresponsive, too. And even my operating system starts going incredibly slow.

This happened with the Stable release of Chrome, Windows XP SP3. No other browser creates this problem. I haven't use any anti-virus software in 2+ years now (and I've been just fine) ^_^
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash robert e 2/2/09 3:26 PM
since the last chrome upgrade, crashes are more frequent

- What version of Flash are you running? 10.0 r12
- What version of Chrome are you running? 1.0.154.46
- What version of Windows are you running? Vista Home Premium SP1
- What other plugin processes do you have running (open 'page' menu > developer > task manager)? google gears 0.5.8.0
- What kind of anti-virus system are you running? bitdefender
- Can you reproduce this consistently on a particular site (URLs help)? fairly consistent issues with americanexpress.com but otherwise seems random; newest chrome version flash-crashes occasionally on hulu, which didn't used to happen; i think it always crashed on miniclip.com games
- Do you get the "plugin unresponsive" dialog, or does the plugin just crash? both. sometimes the browser itself just becomes unresponsive, i.e. clicking links on igoogle does nothing, pages can't be found (in these cases a different browser will work, so not a network issue), browser will close but memory-hogging chrome process in task manager can't be ended.

also, i can't seem to upgrade the flash version with the flash updater.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Chromagnum 2/3/09 12:10 PM
My chrome flash works ok on my XP computer; not on my Vista.  The message that always pops up requests a new plug in to run the flash files.  When I try to download, another box pops up saying it can't download until I close down Chrome.  Round and round in an endless loop.  I posted this a month ago also and it looks like no one has fixed whatever the problem is.  Nor does any help file cover this exact problem.

An interactive Flash app that crashes consistently, but gracefully--I can reload the tab and use the app until the next crash.

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash thittl 2/3/09 1:39 PM
I submitted a bug report for this. (I hadn't been to the forums yet).  Every time I go to slacker.com, the flash player crashes.  It does bring up the plugin unresponsive dialog box, and like others have stated, once I click the option to terminate the plugin, the browser becomes unresponsive.  I use this site in Firefox and I.E. without an issue.  As another poster mentioned, I think I'll have to go back to Firefox as my default until this is resolved.

Running XP sp3
Chrome ver. 1.0.154.46
flash version: 9.0.124.0
Sophos Antivirus Ver. 7.6.4

It does not matter what other processes are running, whether a brand new instance of Chrome on a freshly rebooted machine, or one that's been running for awhile.

This happens every time I try to play a song on www.slacker.com, so yes, it is very reproducable.

Again, the "plugin unresponsive" dialog does appear, and after clicking the option to kill the plugin, the browser becomes unresponsive.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash mash123 2/6/09 1:59 PM
This is a huge problem for me too.  The main difference is that it is also happening in FireFox.

- What version of Flash are you running? 10.0 r12
- What version of Chrome are you running? 1.0.154.48
- What version of Windows are you running? XP SP3
- What other plugin processes do you have running none
- What kind of anti-virus system are you running? McAffee
- Can you reproduce this consistently on a particular site (URLs help)? fairly consistent issues with gmail.com but otherwise seems random;
- Do you get the "plugin unresponsive" dialog, or does the plugin just crash? both. sometimes the browser itself just becomes unresponsive, i.e. clicking links on igoogle does nothing, pages can't be found (not a network issue), browser will close but memory-hogging chrome process in task manager can't be ended.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash col.mcnamara 2/9/09 10:38 PM
I have what seems to be the same problem. I can watch youtube and the likes just fine, but whenever I go to sites like ustream.tv I get the shockwave plugin crash.

I get an error message of the same sort on firefox on the same website, unless I disable the flash plugin there. IE just crashes straight up. I'm running on a Vaio sr290 vista business 32-bit system. and i have the ATi mobility radeon 3470 graphics card. I've tried everything sugested here and in the adobe.com website forums. I've burned through paiges and paiges on google search but nothing. Hope something gets done soon. BTW, my wifes laptop is runing an nvidia card and it can display ustream.tv just fine in all 3 browsers, so I'm leaning towards it being a graphics card issue. Anyone else running a radeon card? I updated my catalyst and everything and still, the same issues.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Lydia fill 2/10/09 6:14 PM
I having been having this problem since summer, in Firefox, IE or Chrome.  It is driving me crazy.

My answers to the questions are identical to mash123's, except that I almost always get this error at hulu.com.  I get it constantly, least often at youtube.

What is frustrating is that this clearly a shockwave (or maybe flash?) problem, not Chrome, but there is virtually no help for either at adobe, and I just don't know who to turn to.  Can anyone suggest anyone who might know the answer to this, any way to find out, anything?  I have, by the way, many times gotten rid of and then reinstalled both shockwave and flash.  That is the only advice I have seen.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash col.mcnamara 2/11/09 3:06 PM
ok, I found a fix, at least to my issue, and it had nothing to do with flash, even though it crashed shockwave flash on chrome and FF. The issue is that there is an error on the way Bluetooth handles streaming videos from others. I know it sounds totally unrelated, but stick with me. What I did was I went in and changed one of the bluetooth files in my System 32 folder and this fixed it. Here's what I did:

go to My Computer>C:(or whatever your hard drive is)> Windows>System32> then (scroll down to) find the file called "BtwVdpCapFilter.dll" and rename it anything else, I renamed it "BtwVdpCapFilter1.dll"

This should fix your issues. Oh, BTW, I restarted my laptop just to make sure.

God, I hope you guys get the same result as I did. Good luck.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Shawn (Googler) 2/11/09 11:49 PM
Thanks guys for all the info. It sounds like for some people, the issue is observed only in Google Chrome. We'll still look into these. However, we've also heard a fair share of reports of issues with current version of Flash in all types of browsers.

@Lydia fill: Can you test something out? Some of our other users have found success in uninstalling their current version of Flash and installing an older version. Do you observe the same success if you try that out?

@col.mcnamara: Thanks for the helpful advice. You never know when someone else might be in the same boat so describing your solution with such detail is very appreciated!

Shawn
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash astha87 2/18/09 4:48 AM
Hey. I have an issue with the Shockwave Flash plugin (in all browsers: Firefox, Chrome, IE, Opera...) I am able to watch Youtube and other videos fine (at least till now) but I recently tried recording a video on Facebook (Facebook has an option to record and add videos on your Friends' walls) and I got an error saying: The following plug-in has crashed: Shockwave Flash. I also got the following error report:

Add-ons: {7694c49c-9fbd-11dc-8314-0800200c9a66}:3.0.2,{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}:3.0.6

I tried uninstalling and re-installing shockwave, as well as the browser, but the problem still persists. I am using Vista SP 1, and Adobe Flash Player 10 plugin (and Adobe Shockwave Player 11) It's really frustrating so any help would be good.

Thanks a lot !

I've recently had the same problem. Don't want to revert to FF :(
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Lydia fill 2/18/09 3:34 PM
Thank you, Shawn, the older version of Flash did the trick.  Indeed, the problem seems to start with 9.0.115.  Which is too bad, because they added new functionality in then, but clearly the new functionality is killing me.  I am guessing that a) there is nothing that can be done at the moment to fix the underlying problem, and b) that I can just hope Adobe will eventually issue a new version that doesn't have the same affect, and so I should try again every few months.  Is that right?
Lydia.

Lydia:
Thanks for the message. This has been driving me crazy for a while now. I too am convinced that Flash has become buggy and unstable. It seems to have taken a dive since Adobe took over from Macromedia. What is the best course of action to get it resolved?
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash astha87 2/22/09 4:23 AM
Which is the earlier version of Shockwave that works? (i.e. that doesn't experience the Shockwave Flash crash error)
Thanks

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash msspock 3/9/09 5:17 AM
Mine crashed this morning.  I found an IE solution on this forum (http://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/internet-explorer-forum/323199-flash10a-ocx-crashes.html).  It was to simply delete the Shockwave flash plugin.  Unsure how to correct in Chrome.  No problem in FF.
This message has been hidden because it was flagged for abuse.

check the list of installed programs, i have some trubles in some pages, crash shockwave, in chrome, Ie, and Firefox.  the problem was an adobe new plugin for flash player 10 (activex and plugin), when u update, the program doesn't uninstall the old flash plugin 9, try that
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash astha87 3/16/09 1:23 AM
Does version 9 of the Shockwave work? This constant "Shockwave Flash Crash" thing is really annoying. YouTube is the only thing that works fine.
I currently have Version 10.0.r22
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash hitalgi 3/17/09 4:46 AM
I'm having the same problem with crashes but for me, it's happening in FF as well as IE. I'd say it's okay for the first hour or so of use but if I watch a video or go to a page which requires flash, I keep having 'the following plug in has crashed: Shockwave Flash' come up. I try and ignore it and reload every time. Then, after a while, the browsers themselves shut down automatically. Sometimes, the browsers shut down when there is no flash required, I think. If it gets worse, my mozilla thunderbird also shuts down out of the blue. (All this is happening in the space of a few mins). In the worst case scenario, the blue screen comes up and my computer switches off (saying something's wrong with kmixer.sys, although not all the time).

This only started happening less than a week ago and it is quite worrying and annoying. I have tried uninstalling shockwave flash and going back to version 9. Didn't help. I tried to do what 'col.mcnamara' suggested above but couldn't find a file called 'btw...' I'm not a very techie person, but could someone suggest what I could do?
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Shawn (Googler) 3/23/09 1:30 PM
Hey guys,

We're having a parallell conversation in the below thread where other users are testing previous version of Flash. You may find that conversation interesting as well.

Cheers,

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash ki4dog 4/5/09 6:24 PM
I had the same problem with Chrome. Shockwave was using near 100% of my processor. I went to Control Panel and uninstalled Adobe Flash Player. I thought this was Shockwave but I guess not since it still displays as running in the Task Manager. Now it's around 17% CPU utilization.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Chrismixx 5/8/09 3:38 PM
If you get the following error message in any web browser when trying to use some form of media, I have the 100% Rock Solid Fix, and its quick & Easy.

Error Message = "The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash"       and / or      "The following Plugin is unresponsive: Shockwave would you like to stop it?"

Then visit the following link :

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

I wish I could have found this post in here sooner, I spent the whole day on and off trying to figure this sh*t out, I couldnt believe it worked, especially after the split second uninstall, and ssplit second install, I thought something went wrong; but I was wrong, it works like a charm now!
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Vicbg 5/14/09 5:47 AM
Guys, I think I FOUND the way (lucky I guess) to fix it....
to get as close to what happened let me tell you what I did...
I had v10 installed and had the same problem as everyone (using XP) - "Shockwave Flash has crashed..."
There was Mr. mcnamara who said to rename a file, but I don't have it.. so I went on looking for other options.
for some, uninstaling the version of flash has worked so I tried doing it. Control Panel -> add remove -> etc ....
Uninstalled flash direct X and flash player ... I thought it all must be done but before continuing, I stumbled on ADOBE's exe, which was an uninstaller of FLASH, so I downed it, ran it and restarted by Google Chrome.

Thought I'd check if I really had removed the FLASH and visited a page that requires it .. there it was .. you need to install Flash Player. What I did was simply pressed the button and it installed as quick as nothing.

Now I have running machine with FLASH capabilities.
Hope it helps.

P.S. here is the link to get Adobe's uninstaller:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html?promoid=DTEGO

Cheers everyone!

P.P.S. sorry for all the text I wrote ....

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash seeza 6/14/09 9:46 PM
Hi Chrismixx - unfortunately not so rock solid - I found the same solution yesterday, did it, restarted and immediately noticed the improvement, including better streaming performance from my 3.5G USB dongle.  Next day, back to square one - same problem.

Hey guys,

Can you provide the Adobe Flash crash dump file? It'll be located in the following places:

XP:  C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\local settings\temp\player_crash_log###.mdmp
Vista:  C:\Users\username\appdata\local\temp\player_crash_log###.mdmp

You can send it through the below contact form.

I have done everything listed above and no luck at all. My system crashes on all three browsers I use (Chrome, IE and FF) every time I try to broadcast my web cam on web sites. It's works just fine on messengers, but on sites, I get the same crash message everyone is talking about here. I have no Idea what I can do to get this fixed. Someone has got to figure this out. Please!!!

There is no such a file in that folder. I had 3 Adobe Flash crashes, but do not see the files there.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash DannyD3750 9/10/09 9:33 PM
I get the same issues as above but noticed that one Google Chrome process seems to be sucking up about 400+MB of memory (along with the 50% CPU usage on a Dual core system) and causes Chrome to "stutter" and is very slow to respond to any clicks. When I kill the 400MB process Chrome starts responding normally (after getting the "The following plug-in has crashed: Shockwave Flash" error message. Looks like this has been going on since January with no solution?
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Hallucinosis 9/14/09 12:41 PM
I've been having terrible problems with Adobe Flash in Google Chrome ever since updated to the latest version of Flash 10. The Flash process seems to run out of control, fully utilizing one of my CPU cores and using tons of memory until I kill that process with Task Manager. Chrome then gives me this warning:
The following plug-in has crashed: Shockwave Flash. It's very annoying. I ran some youtube videos on Friday and came back to my machine on Sunday to find that the Chrome process running Flash had used 32 CPU hours and grown to 1.5gb of memory use.

Windows 7 Ultimate (7600) x64, Google Chrome 3.0.195.20, Adobe Flash Player Plugin 10.32.0.18. My machine is running an Intel Q6600 with 4GB RAM, nVidia 260GTX graphics card, onboard non-accelerated sound, etc.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Hallucinosis 9/14/09 12:47 PM
- Do you have the same problems running Flash in Firefox?

- What other plugin processes do you have running (open 'page' menu > developer > task manager)?
No other plugins running. The problem doesn't always occur immediately. It tends to happen after I've been using the browser for 15-25 minutes from when I've started it.

No anti-virus software installed.

- Can you reproduce this consistently on a particular site (URLs help)?
Yes: http://www.mmo-champion.com

- Do you get the "plugin unresponsive" dialog, or does the plugin just crash?
No, basically it just starts eating up gobs and gobs of memory and CPU until I eventually kill it. This seems like some kind of infinite loop/memory leak situation.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash FxF 9/15/09 10:56 AM
You guys think Flash is bad on Windows?  Try using it on Linux, lol -- it's a memory and CPU hog, continues to consume them even after you close the tabs with Flash content, and has crashed my browser (not just Chrome) countless times.

FlashBlock helps, but not enough, so I've stopped running Chrome with Flash altogether.  One benefit of excising Flash is that Chrome seems to be faster and more responsive.  When I really want to watch some specific Flash content, I either download it, or open a different browser for that page.

I'm coming to the conclusion that Flash is evil. ;-)
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash dancinbear 9/18/09 1:55 PM
I was hoping the new version of Chrome fixed this problem, but I am still having it.  About once a day I get the error: The following plug in has crashed: Shockwave Flash.

- What version of Flash are you running? 10.0.12.36
- What version of Chrome are you running? 3.0.195.21
- What version of Windows are you running? XP Pro
- Do you have the same problems running Flash in Firefox? don't use Firefox, but it does not happen in IE 6 or Maxthon version 1.6.3
- What other plugin processes do you have running (open 'page' menu > developer > task manager)? none now, after the crash I always close and restart my browser.
- What kind of anti-virus system are you running? McAfee
- Can you reproduce this consistently on a particular site (URLs help)? no
- Do you get the "plugin unresponsive" dialog, or does the plugin just crash? it crashes.

Please help. I don't want to have to switch to another browser, I like Chrome (except for this problem)!

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash kkirshner 10/3/09 10:51 AM
Don't know if this will be helpful to anyone.  I was experiencing a problem with the Shockwave plug-in, however to a lesser extent I finally realized I was having a problem overall with my Thinkpad, R51, P4 -- WinXP SP3, 1gram - plenty of hd space.  Norton is current w/ liveupdate subscription.

What I did was identify those widgets on my home page that were using Shockwave and disable them -- with Win XP Task Manager I was able to identify that Shockwave was having a dramatic impact on CPU function.

In searching out an answer or comment to build my own knowledge base, I stumbled on a product that promised to scan, then clean the registry -- I tried it low and behold the laptop is running much "cooler".

Right now I have Quickbooks, Word, Chrome w/3 tabs (with Shockwave running -- I love the fish :)) and CPU is @23-35% with an occassional zap to 50% -- Shockwave is still an issue which smeone should address.

The software was not a free license -- very nominal $30 for the year.  Chances are if you were red-lining @ CPU of 100% pretty often -- Shockwave is only part of the problem which is made worse by all the ghost files and other garbage that is "conflicting" in your computer.

Any of this make sense.  -Not a tech guy, just an abuser!
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash kkirshner 10/4/09 7:35 AM
My problems with Shockwave seem to have abated.  After installing the software Registry Booster 2010 everything is good.  Not sure if yours is similar related -- the Registry Scan found close to 500 errors as they call them, however I'm guessing it was more innocuous files, nothing more than leftover files from previous installs and upgrades.  It's just my theory.
Can you duplicate the problem in FF and IE??  Is the problem affecting when you're working in another program while your browser is open ..........that became my issue.
The Registry Scan/Fix solution seemed to work nicely for me. Good luck
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash dari1ra 10/15/09 8:16 PM
I was having a similar problem with the Shockwave Flash Crashing, then locking up Chrome...

Here's my Specs:
- What version of Flash are you running? Shockwave: 11.5.1.601 and Flash Player 10
- What version of Chrome are you running? Chromium 3.0.195.27
- What version of Windows are you running? Vista 86x Home Premium SP1
- Do you have the same problems running Flash in Firefox? No.
- What other plugin processes do you have running (open 'page' menu > developer > task manager)? I was unable to open the task Manager....Fail.
- What kind of anti-virus system are you running? Custom Made one. A Work in Progress using a fairly comprehensive database of Known Viruses. and BitDefender and Nortan (i'm running three because the Primary is still being developed.)
- Can you reproduce this consistently on a particular site (URLs help)? Almost any Facebook/Myspace App, and Pandora Radio (pandora.com)
- Do you get the "plugin unresponsive" dialog, or does the plugin just crash? Just crashed

Other Notes:
I have Yahoo messenger, Turbine Download Manager, and Msn Messenger running in the background.

After reading the Vista Program unresponsive and reading through the Debug file. I found that for some reason my Google Chrome was trying to access my Yahoo Messenger (when this error occurred on Pandora Radio.) I promptly ended the Yahoo .exe process and the error seemed to fix itself.

I don;t know if any of this would help you guys but i thought i'd post and see if anyone gets help.

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash kkirshner 10/16/09 4:41 AM
My system overload issue using Chrome and Shockwave is still happening although to a slight lesser rextent after cleaning up some registry issues.

I've checked the history in my Norton Internet Security Software.  I get a constant blocked action, and I'm curious if this can be partly the reason.

Here is the action being blocked:
Actor:  c:\Program Files\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe
Target: C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\ (specific IP Address)\ccSvcHst.exe
Action: Blocked

There is a specific IP Address that is in the "Target" which I've not published here.

The problem occurs when especially on my "igoogle" page, newser.com, coincidentaly when I have my quickbooks Software open in background -- virtually any site that uses any kind of "animated" frame on the webpage.

The problem affects every op of my computer performance even resident software, once the CPU begins to occur, which often leads to Chrome and or Shockwave freezing up and crashing.

I've been curious for awhile whether this new change is a result of Norton.  I have also noticed that Norton now wants to be my Search Engine and I'm also curious if that is part of the issue too.

Like Jalal, I love Chrome, and donlt want to be forced to use FF, or IE, as the screen size is greatly diminished with al these "toolbars" and other utlities hanging down from the top of my screen.  SOMEONE, ANYONE................HELP!

i'm on xp sp 3 and honestly flash doesn't crash for me on anything but chrome. i play a lot of games on facebook, what i save chrome for, and i get the constant plugin not responding popups. but it starts as soon as i start some games. it just did it again. i reinstalled the same version of flash as i had before and for right now it's working. but i know it will start happening again. maybe shockwave is evil, but it never crashes firefox, which i reserve for youtube, or internet explorer. i honestly don't know what to do.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash kkirshner 11/16/09 2:46 PM
I suspect Chrome is in development "Google Beta" -- I guess when you have the smallest marketshare but growing and you don't really put that much into it, except various people playing the beta game for years -- they will catch up.  I personally love using Chrome from a purely "Ergo" perspective.  The problems, the poor memory management at times are a thing of reality -- today was a lousy day.  I suppose one of these days I will just walk away -- good for "G" I dislike the other options more at this point.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash oblaarrg 11/17/09 10:00 PM
I was using firefox 3.5.5. w/latest flash today until I experienced crashing every second due to flash plugin.

installed chrome, was impressed (never running clunky firefox again) and was running smoothly then p0w suddenly crashes at random times whenever I view a flash vid that isn't youtube (ie: tudou). tried with IE8.. same problem. (this is why we should all be using HTML5 and dump adobe corporate garbage in the toilet.)

I fixed it by booting into my OpenBSD partition. All vids work find with kazehakase browser.

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Loaded Scissors 11/30/09 2:20 PM
Its seems most people having problems are running a graphics card capable of using "GPU acceleration" generally speaking a graphics card made by ATi or NVidia but any other mainstream 3D card also applies. Most manufacturers have also recently released drivers (ie Nvidia on 26th November) including bug updates effecting flash player. Let me know if updating your graphics card drivers on the manufacturers web page helps :-)
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Loaded Scissors 11/30/09 4:14 PM
Just as an update, I previously would crash about once every 20-30 minutes on Last.FM or YouTube when I was using the standard Microsoft installed graphics driver. Following installing the latest graphics driver I've been crash free so far (touch wood).

Do not assume that as you've "only just installed" the driver you don't need an updated driver, also bare in mind if your driver came from windows update it is definitely not the most up to date driver.

To get the latest driver for your graphics card if you have an NVidia card goto :

To get the latest driver for your graphics card if you have an ATi card goto :

I have had this problem with Chrome for a while, and have given up using it when I want to use a few particular URLs that provide links that I hope to open in new tabs.  Trying to use such sites with just grinds my CPU to an apparent halt until I get the notice that Shockwave has failed.  The good news - I have had no problems with Opera.  The Shockwave plugin works fine, and I can open new tabs quickly and without any problem.

Meanwhile, I don't see this subject as a "known issue" at the Chrome web site, at not clearly enough that it suggests any particular recognition of what appears to be a commonly experienced problem.

I did the following to fix:

Download the macromedia/adobe uninstaller from here: http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe
Download the Flash installer from here: http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe
Close all browsers/ Kill any Chrome tasks
run uninstall
reboot
run install
run Chrome and it works for me now.

Hope thus helps

I uninstalled and reinstalled flash, I updated my videocard driver... older versions of Flash... it doesn't matter, it keeps crashing :(

I, too, am tired of Shockwave Flash crashing on Google Chrome for me.  I don't do a lot of web surfing so I don't know about that, but when on Facebook and I'm playing games it consistently crashes (since 2-3 days ago).  I am having to use Firefox, too, but I have some issues with it with my games not viewing properly.  Explorer is totally out of the question.  It sucks!  I can't seem to do much of anything on it.  I am using Windows Vista if this helps!

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Synhyborex 12/15/09 10:36 PM
after lots and lots of work and experimentation, i found that you can solve this problem multiple ways:

1) try restarting your computer. often times, there are some programs that interfere with the running of shockwave flash. however, this is only a temporary fix unless you can figure out what that program is and avoid running it (sucks though because it's probably a program that you WANT or NEED to run)

2) close microsoft word. yeah it sounds stupid but as i said i experimented, and for some reason shockwave flash seems to crash each time i have word 07 open. maybe it's just the 07 version, maybe not, but if you're using 07 and windows 7, close word if you want to run shockwave flash. this is another temporary fix

3) reinstall shockwave flash. since it's really two separate programs, you need to install two things, but first you need to manually uninstall both. to uninstall shockwave, go here: http://download.shockwave.com/pub/shockwave/uninstaller/swuninstaller.exe. as for flash, go here: http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe. once you do that, restart your computer just in case there are any final uninstallation things that need to be done, and then reinstall both, using these two links: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ for flash and http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/ for shockwave. this SHOULD fix your problem. don't try to just reinstall both without uninstalling, because for some reason that doesn't seem to work (though it might for your OS). since there's no patch to permanently fix the bugs in flash 10 yet, you might have to repeat this process after a few days or weeks (i've done it twice) to fix the issue again.

as a side note, whenever windows media center crashes, shockwave flash seems to crash, and vice versa. both seem to happen though simultaneously when i have word 07 open...O_O

hope this helps!

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash acko085 1/7/10 2:54 AM
Got the same problem as you did but paid no attention at first.
Then when a lot of people started having the same issues I decided to investigate.
The problem "seems" to be in hardware acceleration in newer versions of Flash. Maybe I am wrong but I didn't want to dig deeper since I fixed it easily. HW acceleration is coded as it should be in "pre-releases" of Flash 10.1 so here's what you should try:

1. Download Flash uninstaller and run it
2. Download and install Flash 10.1 pre-release at http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/

That should do the trick.

Post your results :)

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash cordoval 1/11/10 4:42 AM
There is a problem with gmail advance attachment feature in gmail. It was failing not only on chrome but in all other browsers where the advance feature was used by default. Firefox was smart enough to avoid using the advanced feature attachment and went straight to the basic feature. I tested my flash in other sites and the shockwave as well and it did not trigger any other problem. I bet this is a problem with gmail and they way the attachment feature was so dependent probably on a shockwave version or some other setting.

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash abern01 1/19/10 7:51 AM
I got fed up with so many crashes, I thought it was something other than Google, so I reformatted my hard drive (a major pain).  I did a clean install of Windows XP SP3, Office 2007, Adobe Reader, Flash, Shock Wave and Google Chrome.  So now I have:
Google Chrome 3.0.195.38
Adobe Shock Wave 11.5.2.602
AVG 9.0.0.727

Everything appeared to be OK for 2 days until just now when Chrome tells me "The following plug-in has crashed : Shock Wave Flash".

So it appears as if it doesn't matter if you have the newest / latest version software running...Chrome still causes crashes!!!  Sorry Google...but you suck and like everyone else in this forum, I'm going back to Firefox.  I waited a really long time for you to get this fixed and can draw either of 2 conclusions:  Either you don't care or you don't know how to fix this!

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash kkirshner 1/27/10 8:36 AM
I wouldn't give up on Chrome if you love the minimalist design, and go back to FF and lose all that "Screen Real Estate" never.

I would uninstall everything including Chrome, install latest Chrome Beta version, re-install the Adobe software.  Seems to work -- only occasionally do I get a crash -- and smetime I need to close a tab -- but who needs more than 6-8 tabs open at once.

Make sure your other relevant drivers are current.  This is a very trial and error method and might require trying more than once.  I would bother with the elaborate adding new code, deleting certain code -- not necessary. With G-adding extensions for Wave and Voice -- YES!

yay it worked for me!!
what happened was that:
1/ i downloaded the uninstaller from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html?promoid=DTEGO
2/ and then reinstalled flash.. but chrome still crashed..
3/ ran the uninstaller again.. and saw from the log that uninstallation would only complete after reboot where it had to remove a file..
4/ launched chrome and cleared history/etc from option just to make sure everything was clear..
5/ reinstalled latest flash..and voila!! no more crashes..
my chrome is 4.0.302.3...
thanks!!

(2) Open ccleaner and run registry and cleaner tools ( If you own a computer you need ccleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download  its free if you click "Alternative Download" )

(3) Restart computer

(4) Open ccleaner and run registry tool only ( dont need to clean )

(5) Open Internet Explorer ( trust me it makes the end result much more stable ) and paste this link http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=BUIGP after your done be sure to close Internet Explorer and have no other windows open before next step.

(5) Open G-Chrome and paste this link http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/  and click install.

The reason for all the confusion people is all (most) programs leave files in your C:\WINDOWS folder and other places so that it knows that it was previously installed and/or for various other reasons.

This has just started for me w/google chrome (which I loved until this started) but I think it's an adobe issue, not a chrome issue, for me it's no any site that needs flash/shockwave.  I get unable to load plug-in, not sure why and it's not telling me which, but since I'm trying to view ie c-span videos I guessing flash.

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash vwyankee 2/25/10 10:48 AM
I know for me this is definitely not a Chrome problem, but either Adobe or something to do with the process of installing the player.  I've made multiple comments about how I've experienced this crash with Chrome AND FF AND IE.  I've run a few of the "fixes" with some success and then as time went on the fixes were less and less then to where I gave up at least for a few days on trying to fix it as nothing seemed to work.  My main test was always slacker.com as that's my daily listening and today I couldn't stand the silence so back to troubleshooting.  I've got it working again (knock on wood very firmly!) and I hope it holds this time.  I've had it go a few days in the past and then crash again.  What was different this time may not be easy to follow but I'll try to explain as it seems to depend on the site pulling the new install.

Using an uninstaller I removed flash/shockwave.  I opened Chrome expecting the prompt to install flash and/or shockwave to which I did on Slacker.com.  However, there's no automated install with clicking the button to install the software needed, but just a link to Adobe's page.  I had already tried many many times installing from the various installers I've already downloaded.  On a different tab (HERE IS WHAT WORKED FOR ME) I had the same bar across the top showing I needed the shockwave plugin as on Slacker, but clicking the install button on this one immediately launched the installer from my C:\ drive.  Which one, I don't recall, but the key seems to be it installing from the browser's initiative without closing the browser.  Previously, when launching the installers from my local drive it would give me a message it couldn't install until Chrome was closed and you had to exit Chrome in order to install, but after doing so would result in the same Shockwave crashing error.

So, again, I'm not sure if this is a sure thing or even how reproducible it is, but it's how I got back to running after much hair pulling and all the other fixes failing.  Heck, I even was going through my registry myself to delete flash/shockwave keys that were lingering from after uninstalling.  The site that allowed flash/shockwave to install from the button on the information bar that pops up (without closing the browser) was planningcenteronline.com, but I'm not sure it needs flash to a public visit (I was signed in).  I want to say that a couple other times in the past when I would get it to work again it was when flash/shockwave was installed while the browser was still open in the same sense.  Sorry I can't give more details for a good fix, but I would say if you have a site that requires it and gives the option to install without having to closer the browser that would be the same key as what I had luck with.

Good luck and I feel for all those fighting with this.

Running Win7 Enterprise x64 if it helps.

Guys,

I got this problem when using Gmail, trying to attach files to an e-mail - the whole thing locks down (I can even close the window), I get the "The following plug-in has crashed: Shockwave Flash" message and I have to open Google Chrome again. Obviously, if trying again to attach a file makes all the latter happen.

A quick solution I have found is: go to Settings > General > Attachments - switch from "Advanced..." to "Basic attachment features - Attach one file at a time and don't show progress bars".

I guess the Google guys can find out which is the deep problem going on, but at least this will let you continue working.

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Blair (Googler) 4/26/10 3:50 PM
Hi everybody,

Uninstalling and reinstalling Shockwave Flash has stopped it from crashing for some people. You can find instructions for how to do that here: http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=108086

If this doesn't solve your problem, please start a new thread. I'm going to close this thread since it was started a long time ago and the cause of the problem may have changed since then. We're aware that the problem hasn't gone away, and we're working hard to fix it. Until then, we appreciate any information you have to give.

Best,
Blair
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Blair (Googler) 7/3/10 6:26 AM
Hey everybody,

We’re excited to announce that Adobe Flash is now integrated into Google Chrome’s Stable channel by default. This integration will eliminate the need to install and update Flash Player separately. This reduces the security risk and issues related to using outdated versions. As of this week, your browser should automatically be updated with integrated Flash Player. To check, simply go to Tools > About Google Chrome.

To learn more about Adobe Flash integration, check out the Chromium Blog post here:
http://blog.chromium.org/2010/06/enabling-adobe-flash-player-support-in.html

With regards to Shockwave Flash crashes, below are a few possible causes of the issue and work-arounds that may help. These do not work for everyone; please only make changes you feel comfortable making.

1. You may be on an outdated version of Google Chrome. Check if you are on the latest version by going toTools > About Google Chrome.

2. You may have an out of date Sony driver that causes the crash. You can try downloading the update here:
http://dlv.update.sony.net/pub/vaio/download/EP0000166578/EP0000166578.exe

3. Hardware acceleration of Adobe Flash may be causing crashes. Hardware acceleration is used to speed up performance of your graphics hardware. If your video drivers are outdated, hardware acceleration can cause issues with Flash. Try turning off hardware acceleration by right-clicking the video, selecting Settings, and deselecting the "hardware acceleration" checkbox.

4. You may have a sound driver incompatibility. Try the steps on the following site:
http://www.bitconsultants.net/2009/fix-windows-7-flash-crashing-remote-desktop-issue/

5. There may be an error in the way Bluetooth handles streaming video. You can try renaming one of the Bluetooth files in System 32 folder. Go to My Computer > C: > Windows > System32, find the file called "BtwVdpCapFilter.dll" and rename it anything else, for example "BtwVdpCapFilter1.dll."

We know Shockwave Flash Crashes continue to be a large issue, and we are constantly working to improve. Please keep giving us feedback and letting us know what works for you.

Best,
Blair

- What version of Flash are you running? 10.1
- What version of Chrome are you running? 5.0.375.99
- What version of Windows are you running? XP Pro  SP3
- Do you have the same problems running Flash in Firefox? Don't use Firefox
- What other plugin processes do you have running (open 'page' menu > developer > task manager)? None
- What kind of anti-virus system are you running? Avast! Home Edition
- Can you reproduce this consistently on a particular site (URLs help)? ALWAYS on Facebook. Especially while playing Zynga.com games
- Do you get the "plugin unresponsive" dialog, or does the plugin just crash? No dialog. "The following plug-in has crashed: Adobe Flash". It's always crashing, PC is slow and lagging or locks up.

I constantly empty my cache and history as well as the Adobe Cache
I have a large amount of free space on my HD
I didn't have other applications running
I have removed and reinstalled Google Chrome several times
I have a Total Disk Size of 66.9 GB and 43.5 Free Space

Intel Pentium 4 Xeon CPU 3.06 GHZ
512+ Memory

I really love Google Chrome and want to continue using it, but if this can't be fixed then I will have to dump it. The reply that "Blair" keeps posting as a "reply" is not helpful to me at this point.

This didn't start until Adobe Flash Player upgraded to the 10 Version.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Mullhew 8/1/10 1:29 PM
I've been having the same crashing issue for almost 6 weeks now, and a complete reinstall of Windows doesn't fix it. IE 8 (the great Satan) runs Shockwave fine, in particulae YouTube. Chrome throws a flacky after 1 second. My machine has been fresh installed for less than 2 days, and it's still crashing. Not funny.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Mullhew 8/1/10 1:31 PM
Oh, and I tried the uninstall and reinstall Flash and Shockwave stuff before I reinstalled Windows 7 64 bit. It still doesn't work. I want to use Chrome, not IE crappy-ness. Please sort it!
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash OppfinnarJocke 8/5/10 10:18 AM
Since the Flash update yesterday (I think) I cannot watch *any* video on youtube or facebook. Flash becomes unresponsive and I get the dialog asking if it should be stopped, and I can stop it. But if I try to view video, any video, several times in a row, eventually it takes down Chrome entirely and I have to kill the unresponsive Chrome process from task manager.

Someone sure messed up big time with a recent update, either Google or Adobe. My money is on Adobe, I know previous updates have seriously messed other things up. Those people cannot program worth a lick...

Chrome version: 5.0.375.125.
Flash version: 10,1,53,64
W7x64 pro
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash OppfinnarJocke 8/6/10 3:05 AM
Googling around I found hints that the problem is Flash + W7x64 + IDT audio card.
All three of those are valid for me. Anyone else?
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash OppfinnarJocke 8/6/10 3:08 AM
And I can just now confirm that my problem is not a Chrome issue. The exact same thing happens with IE8, any youtube video locks up teh browser. Those stupid xyz Adobe...
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash OppfinnarJocke 8/6/10 4:10 AM
I uninstalled from "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features" everything that had to do with Adobe Flash/Shockwave and re-started my W7x64 system. Now, vids work in Chrome!

I did no reinstallation of Flash. so obviously vids don't work in IE8, but I don't care about that...
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Peter Kovacs 8/7/10 4:49 PM
I fixed my problem by disabling the integrated flash plugin (GCSWF32.DLL) which forces it to use the standard plugin (NPSWF32.DLL).

I did this by doing this:

- type this in the address bar:  about:plugins
- there should be two "Shockwave Flash" plugins
- click DISABLE on the "gcswf32.dll" one near the top
- leave the "npswf32.dll" version enabled near the bottom on the page
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash OppfinnarJocke 8/11/10 4:56 AM
Flash crash, here too...
Chrome 5.0.375.126 (Official Build 53802) [only Flash and IE Tab plugins installed]
Shockwave Flash - Version: 10,1,82,76
W7x64 pro (with all latest updates)
Dell Precision M4400
IDT audio card, driver 6.10.0.6217 (latest)

Note that Flash is not installed on my comp (all other browsers say I need to install Flash), I only use Flash through the Chrome plugin, so the problem is there (I guess).

I tried  to try Blairs suggestions, but....
1. Have the latest Chrome version.
2. No Sony stuff on this machine
3. How are we to "right-clicking the video, selecting Settings, and deselecting the "hardware acceleration" checkbox" when the video crashes and Flash becomes unresponsive?
4. "Try the steps on the following site:
http://www.bitconsultants.net/2009/fix-windows-7-flash-crashing-remote-desktop-issue/", the link gives me "403 Forbidden"
5. No Bluetooth on this machine.

In short... the suggestions were useless to me
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash fluet 8/16/10 5:40 AM
Opp,

i think i found a workaround, using both the Blairs propositions and the Peter Kovacs method,

so what you need to do is find away to disable gcswf32.dll, while letting chrome use the npswf32.dll file to play flash video, but you also need to deselecting hardware acceleration.

Your YT videos will play fine, hopefully...

Peter Kovacs solution worked for me as well, on my XP system at work using Chrome 5.0.375.127.

What gets me is that I have NEVER had this issue, and then all of a sudden it starts happening multiple times per day.   Makes me wonder who sent out an update in the last 10 days to cause this to happen (Flash?)

I had this problem too for months and it frustrated the heck out of me. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the shockwave flash but the chrome just kept on crashing when loading certain web pages. Finally, I uninstalled google chrome, rebooted, re-installed chrome and voila! Works just great now. Give it a go.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash mbtvchat 9/26/10 2:11 PM
My experience is that since Adobe Flash 10.x crashes/slow response has been the name of the game.  I've also found that both Chrome and IE have problems with it.  However, what I find extremely frustrating is that the WAY in which it crashes is far worse in Chrome.  In IE7, if Flash starts to have a hissy fit, my hard drive starts working frantically and IE7 slows down to a crawl.  Eventually it gets to slow I have to End Task.

However, Chrome goes one better.  First of all the hard drive starts working frantically.  A few seconds later even the mouse pointer won't move (something that never happens in IE7).  Then Windows fails to response to anything without waiting about 90 seconds or more (at least with IE7's crashes things are slowed down but not to such an extent you have to walk away from the machine waiting a whole minute or two for it to respond to mouse/key presses).

At this stage, Ctrl+Alt+Del will (eventually) bring up the 'Lock Computer / Task Manager / Shut Down...' etc. dialog box, but clicking 'Task Manager' will dismiss this and Task Manager will fail to appear.  Then, the screen will go black and all windows slowly start redrawing but with buttons missing / sections remaining black.  On one occasion a Blue Screen Of Death has resulted shortly after this - on another, the mouse pointer has frozen with no ability for anything to respond at all afterwards, with the hard drive fan sounding like it's about to send my base unit into vertical take-off, with the unit getting seriously hot underneath.

On most occasions however after about 8-10 minutes suddenly everything starts responding again, but Chrome won't run the Adobe plug-in at all after launching it again unless the machine is rebooted, even though IE7 will.

Also, I've been noting that some websites state that in order to view a video embedded in the page, I need to have Adobe Flash installed (saying that I haven't, or that it isn't detected), and the yellow bar appears in Chrome with the 'Install Plug-In' button.  Clicking this dismisses the yellow bar but does nothing (as I'd expect it to because I DO have it installed).  Visiting the same page again gives the same thing.  (This paragraph occuring any time, not just after a crash event).

BTW I too have an ATI Radeon graphics card (Hypermemory X800/X1500).
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash thecresta 9/28/10 2:59 PM
My situation is much the same as mbtvchat's.

Flash videos will play fine, then all of a sudden one will stop loading. Then Chrome stops responding, and I get the Shockwave unresponsive message, and a yes or no prompt. Nether option makes Chrome responsive again, and I have to force close.

At this point I may as well pull the plug out of my PC, as there is no way to stop it freezing.

Eg: I open Chrome again, the PC completely freezes. I open a folder on my PC, the PC completely freezes. I select to shutdown / restart Windows, it freezes before it shuts down. So I HAVE to do a hard reset.

Using Chrome 6.0.472.63, NO FLASH INSTALLED other than whats embedded in Chrome, Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

THIS IS VERY VERY ANNOYING!
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash cadamy 10/3/10 5:52 AM
I finally paid Justanswer.com to solve this for me.  They asked me to scan for viruses (I didn't have any).  Then gave the following instructions:

please disable the windows presentation foundation plugin.........

It is not required......

After that follow the steps below -:

please download the Flash Player Uninstaller program using the following link:
http://tinyurl.com/5cnmwt

.Download completed ;Now run it to remove the existing version of Flash Player from your system.
After that, reinstall Flash Player by following this link:
http://tinyurl.com/544drw

My problem is solved.  I've used the computer for a full day without any problems.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Querry 10/6/10 5:32 PM
This problem is so common to me that I thought it's part of the features of Chrome for users' entertainment. It's like a game to kill pages and see a response "Aw.... a plugin has crashed."
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash thecresta 10/9/10 8:25 AM
When my Chrome crashes after this message, Chrome is still under Task Manager > Processes using 25% CPU usage.

I can't kill it no matter how many times I try.

Then the ENTIRE PC FREEZES! And I have to press reset!

Restore the pages after rebooting, video starts working correctly. Annoying!

I have no AV running, I've tried the official and beta release of Chrome, installed many different versions of Flash (if it makes any difference), no joy.

Looks like I'm going back to Firefox...

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Rick Herrick STL 10/12/10 1:24 PM
I've been having very similar issues.  I don't really see performance degradation, but Chrome itself freezes up repeatedly.  Usually, it's the Shockwave plugin that crashes.  I've also had "Unknown" plugin crashing (which ends up being Shockwave) and just recently I started having the Roboform Chrome plugin crashing (note that this all started BEFORE I had installed the Roboform plugin, so it's not that that's causing the crash).

I can usually recover just by reloading each page I have open at the time.

I also just started getting a new behavior, where Chrome becomes unresponsive and stays on top of everything else.  I can click buttons and tabs and see action, e.g. the X to close the app in the upper right highlights when I mouse over and darkens when depressed, just like normal behavior.  But Chrome doesn't respond at all. It's very difficult to do anything in this state because I can't even get to Process Explorer very well (it's behind Chrome when I open it up).  I usually have to click click click a bunch and get lucky in the split second before it switches back to Chrome or hard reboot.

This is on a fairly new i5 Macbook Pro running Windows 7 32-bit under Boot Camp, video driver version 8.17.12.5715.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Chris Cymro 10/16/10 8:35 AM
I get the same problem (Chrome v.6 on Vista Home Premium):  Chrome grinds to a halt, hangs for a while, then tells me the Shockwave plugin has crashed.
If I open the browser options, disable then re-enable Google's Flash plugin, then it seems to work, at least until the next time I launch the browser.
This seems to have been a problem for at least a year, so why hasn't it been fixed?

I tried to do the my computer
c:drive
Scoll down
BtwVdpCapFilter.dll
thing but my computer has no BtwVdpCapFilter.dll I even tried to do a search for it.

So dose anyone from Adobe have any answers. It just seems they want someone else to do there job for them.

same problem as everybody else:  It happens several times every day, but I can fix it temporarily by reloading the page.  I have ADHD, and I have many windows and tabs open at the same time because there are so many irresistible links on so many pages.  It is infuriating because before the crash, pages take minutes to load.  Win XP, SP3;  Chrome

Look, here's the meat of this issue - Google's Chrome is the culprit here, and unless they get their act together, like as soon as yesterday, then much of all their goodwill they've built up over the years will go up in a puff of smoke.

Don't tell me what I need to delete, uninstall, re-install, reboot or whatever. Google needs to take it down or fix it, or as we say down south, shit or get off the pot.

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash chrome_rocks 11/20/10 12:08 AM
hi,

I had this problem on Win XP. It was resolved as below:

a) Open Control panel -> Security center
b) Click on Open 'internet options'
c) In the new window opened, go to 'Security' tab
d) Select 'internet' for the zone
e) Click 'custom level'. The Security settings window opens
f) In that go to 'Display video and animation on a webpage that does not use external media player'
g) You have the option of Disable, Enable. Select Enable.

You are done !!

Hi Chrome_Rocks: my XP is crashing much like the others are saying. I’ve tried to follow your recommendations but I do not have (b), ‘Internet Options’ in my Security Center. Any other way I can get to these settings?
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Jack Yan 11/26/10 2:53 AM
Chrome_Rocks, never mind, I found it. My settings are not in the Security Center. For me, (a) would simply be ‘Open Control Panel’.

Let’s see if this works—thank you!

I have also experienced delays in trying to activate gmail and the messages that a shockwave plug-in is unresponsive or sometimes that an unknown plug-in is unresponsive. This problem was resolved after I re-installed Google Gears obtainable for free from Softronic. Gmail both on-line and off line is now loading pretty fast and messages relating to unresponsive plug-ins no longer pop up. Downloading and re-installing Google Gears should take just a few minutes and would be worth a try for googlers experiencing a similar problem.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash mikki.miranda 12/27/10 9:36 AM
My repost from another discussion: I recently upgraded my RAM from 1GB to 2GB. (I'm using Vista) Before, I always experience persistent and annoying crashes on sites like Google Reader, Yahoo Mail and Youtube. After the upgrade, I tested how many tabs my computer can handle before Chrome hangs up, but it seems that it doesn't anymore. Probably the suggestion pertaining to "hardware acceleration" worked for my case. I'll update if it happens again, but for now, I'm currently crash-free since the upgrade.

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Alex_one789 1/17/11 3:52 AM
I'm getting the same problem as above.

Am on Windows Vista, Chrome 8.0, with two versions of Flash: 10,1,103,20 and 10,1,85,3.

Keeps crashing with the following: plug-in crashed: Shockwave Flash or 'programme unknown'

This happens especially when I have several embedded videos on several tabs.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash HillolDasgupta 1/26/11 9:11 PM
All, the problem has been SOLVED !!
I did not go through the entire section here...so might be somebody has already proposed the similar solution. Anyhow, I was having the same problem with YouTube, like whenever I was trying to run any video in YouTube, it was showing me the error "....has become unresponsive: Flashwave...". So, after a bit of investigation, I suddenly noticed that the "Safety" in the YouTube is "Turned Off". I thought (and I was right :) ) that perhaps that is blocking the video somehow...and YES..as soon as I turned it On...videos started working on YouTube !!!

So, before you try any of the "time consuming" solutions, please take a look at your "Safety" zone in YouTube. You might save a lot of time and energy....

@Shawn, you might pass this info on to your co-workers, who are looking for a solution to this issue....cheers !!!
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash dejagore 1/30/11 4:09 AM
I tried to get this flash issue problem fixed for like few hours now and I can tell that I've found the FINAL solution. For me the issue was Flash Shockwave player plugin version 10.1 X. What You need to do is install plugin in version 10.0 and turn off version 10.1. To install version 10.0 You either need to go to http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html and download it manually or turn OFF all flash plugins in "chrome://plugins/" tab and go to for instance youtube.com and there will be a link to download a flash player (pick old version 10.0)

To turn it off go to URL in chrome :
chrome://plugins/
and turn on Details (on the right side there's a "+" icon)
Then find the Flash Plugins and turn off 10.1. After restart every shockwave stream works like a charm :-)
Here's how the chrome://plugins/ page looks on my side :

Flash (2 files) - Version: 10.0.42.34 Download Critical Security Update
Shockwave Flash 10.0 r42

:D

Let me know if it got fixed by you too.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash tpotter 2/7/11 4:28 PM
jesus - from 09 ? are you kidding me ? anyway. Sure I know it's a beta product but recently the shockwave thing has gotten so bad it has made chrome just not usable. I don't mind an outright crash but now it will also start to slow down to a deadly snail crawl and take forever to get to the crash point - that I have not time for. So I switch to chromium and have been running without crashes all day so far. Much better than before. So my answer - get chromium which I know sounds like something out of a batman movie but darn if it does work.

What the hell is going on??? I see all these "solutions", but just give it to me straight!. I spent 25 years of my life in IT, until I got ill - maybe it was IT!?). Most of the last 15 was living in the guts of mainframe software (fixing, installing, babysitting,...). I DO NOT want to play 'DEBUGGERMAN" anymore. If Google can't just post a reliable fix, then GOODBYE GOOGLE and your CHROME. I belive there is way too much USER interference. When are you going to stop calling it BETA? Hey, I have invested a lot of hours getting into this browser and Gmail. But I am about to go back to IE, or get a MAC again. SO, tell me where to go (and don't be cute - I AM PISSED!). By the way, the plugin GOOGLE TALK bombs too!

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash tjinfo 2/18/11 11:03 PM
I followed dejagore's steps. Uninstalled flashplayer 11.1 or whatever the 11 version was.  Downloaded version 10.0.  Inside that folder, i mistakenly installed 10.0.53, but now, my computer doesnt freeze, and youtube videos play fine.  Prior to this, as soon as i went to youtube, my computer started 'stuttering,'  then i got the message that plugin crashed, and then i had to ctrl-alt-del and kill chrome.  So far, after installing 10.0+, no crashes, youtube running fine.

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash m21out 2/27/11 10:24 AM
I don't know if this will help everyone but I fixed this issue for me by doing this. This applies to chrome users but for me it also fixed it for firefox and IE.
1. I ran the flash uninstaller with all flash programs closed.
2. I restarted my computer
3. I checked if I could watch videos (I couldn't but this might work for others)
4. I went to the adobe flash player website (Here is the link: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ ) and it said I still had flash player 10. So I disabled flash player. (To do this, go to Chrome://plugins, find your flash, and disable it.)
5. I went back to the adobe flash player website and it said "Missing Plugin". I clicked the "player download center" link and along with the google chrome is already built-in blah blah blah message I got the "If you are using the open source Chromium browser, please download and install the Flash Player plug-in below."
I did that, restarted my computer and boom, video and other flash content was working. It also fixed it for firefox and IE somehow. I don't know if this helps everyone but it's worth a try. Hope it helps :)
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash jaystock 2/28/11 3:32 AM
There is also a huge memory leak with the Shockwave Plugin for Mac Chrome.  I'm running Chrome 9.0.597.102 and when I view my "Activity Monitor", I see that the Shockwave Plugin keeps consuming more and more memory as I browse over the course of a day, even after I close the webpages.  Right now Shockwave is consuming 650 MB of memory on my computer, and I only have two websites open, neither of them very Shockwave intensive.   The only way to clear the memory seems to be quitting Chrome altogether.

This is a problem since I do a lot of memory-intensive scientific computing on my laptop.

Safari seems a little better than Chrome in memory consumption, but I've also had problems with Safari using large amounts of memory after all websites are closed.

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Smallay82 3/8/11 12:28 PM
This issue is the result of a compatibility problem between the new version of the Flash Player plug-in and Chrome.  First of all remove the Flash Player plug-in because you don't actually need it when using Chrome.  Keep the Flash Player ActiveX cause that's what you'll actually need for the video streaming.  If this doesn't completely fix the problem then if you have Bonjour then have it repaired.  Then have the system restarted.

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash yang_meiling 3/8/11 10:53 PM
i have this prob for a week now. I am not very good in computers but I don't think it has something to do with chrome or flash since it happened to me suddenly i was watching this video in youtube it was fine then it just stopped. it never happened to me before. I did not install any program or download anything. When I turn off my laptop it hangs it just displays "windows is shutting down but it doesn't or when it does it takes time even about an hour or so which is definitely not normal. anyway I'm using my laptop in safemode with networking right now so I can surf the net better. I found this site saying that it's caused by a bug i am trying this remedy he suggested: download malwarebytes.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash padremac 3/9/11 2:20 PM
I've uninstalled the Flash Player plug-in, kept the Flash Player ActiveX, and it's still crashing.

I thought I'd finally got a browser that worked, but Chrome's going the way all the others went for me!
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash RafflesNH 3/10/11 7:45 AM
I too developed this problem, (as well as issues printing web pages from IE compatibility tabs in Chrome), shortly after upgrading my Windows 7 Internet Explorer 8 to IE9 RC.

I then uninstalled IE9 and reverted back to IE8, and all seems quite stable once more and web page printing in both Chrome and IE has been fixed!

hth someone.

Please can anyone! tell me from where I can update.. my Plug-in..because it operates very slowly and often locks up..then sometimes I get a "The following plug-in has crashed: Shockwave Flash" message..Plz send me the link..
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash RafflesNH 3/11/11 5:13 AM
Ahhh  sorry folks, spoke too soon(see 3/10/11). Reverting to IE8 still causes plug-in crashes, but printing issues have remained resolved. Let's hope Google resolves this issue soon, as my Chrome experience is now very frustrating.

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash SASmoonsfire 3/12/11 3:42 PM
Umm, yep Shawn, Thats affirmative. The problem is simply in Google Chrome. I experienced this problem only in Youtube when i tried uploading a video via my webcam. I switched to Windows explorrer, and it worked.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Biscuitto 3/13/11 8:07 AM
It just stated doing this recently.  I'm on Windows 7 64 bit.  It occasionally works but then 2 web pages later it crashes.  "The following plug-in has crashed: Shockwave Flash"

I have tried re downloading the flash player, but I read somewhere that when Google Chrome updates all of the stuff it reads to run is updated as well so if you have the up to date version it should be fine.
But it clearly isn't.  Bit of a pain, can't watch any videos either.

And Google isn't in the spelling dictionary for a piece of software developed by Google.  Lol.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash docalla 3/14/11 1:46 AM
Try this.....

1. Shut down chrome.
2. right click the chrome icon and select properties.
3. append " -enable-internal-flash" (without quotes) to the chrome.exe bit.
4. Double click to restart chrome.
5. Reload webpage that was giving you the problem.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash donpatent 3/14/11 6:55 AM
Gears stink, Shockwave Flash stinks, Chrome stinks and those "Crash" notices stink.

Firefox is the ONLY answer.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash panguilla 3/14/11 10:03 AM
Mmmh had the same problem, windows 7 64 bit, chrome version 10.0.648.133 flash player Version: 10.2.152.32
Shockwave Flash 10.2 r152  AND Shockwave Flash 10.2 r154
i've disable the r154 only, and youtube works again...
step by step:
Chrome Option, advanced (the third menu)==> content==> plug in ==> disable single plug in, look for flash, click on details, disable the r154 version.
enjoy.
hope it helps!
Ciao!
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Cheesebreath101 3/14/11 10:30 AM
This is getting out of hand Google Chrome. Do you guys know how much hassle and stress this is causing me? For goodness sake how hard is it for you people to fix this irritating stupid little bug? I'm so stressed right now. I try and watch a Youtube video and this error keeps appearing, ever since Chrome updated itself. Absolute garbage. Forget Chrome, I'm reverting back to my good old RELIABLE Firefox, I've had enough of this foolish Chrome Shockwave palava. Sort it out Chrome, and fast. Firefox>Chrome.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Cheesebreath101 3/14/11 10:30 AM
Absolutely horrified you people at Google aren't even addressing our responses and not trying to solve the problem. Absoloutely shocking. We are all just here replying back and forth running around like headless chickens, but you guys aren't even doing anything. Ah well, back to the good ol' reliable Firefox it is then.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash goa3008 3/15/11 8:44 AM
guys i had this problem for 2 years. playing at facebook sometimes was so hard but today i finally found the solution. just download new browser comodo dragon http://www.comodo.com/home/browsers-toolbars/browser.php its all like google chrome u wont notice at all that u have switched browsers, during the install comodo even import all chrome settings for you and all chrome extensions work there as well. And no more flash crashes, unresponsible pages or error connection timed out. I had all those problems with fast pc. I tried all possible "solutions" to these problems but in some way my chrome was not working good at all even it started to load pages very slow.
so try this new browser, its nice, fast and stable. Dnt think i invent this i followed advice from some guy here too :))

Google shares are $569.56         today - so obviously GOOG doesn't give a damn.

I wouldn't give you $5.69 for the entire company.

And I WAS a BIG GOOG booster.

They need to do something to reclaim my allegiance.

So far - NOTHING.

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Creckcc1 3/17/11 9:04 AM
With ie9 just released this is perfect timing for Microsoft.
I have tried all of the suggestions provided on these forums including the ones from Google employees but to no avail. I cannot use Chrome for more than 5 minutes without "the following plug-in has crashed: shockwave flash"
This happens consistently every time I use the Chrome browser.
This has only started happening for me in the last few weeks.
I am sure Google are working to fix the issue and the fact that it is taking them so long suggests to me that it is a Flash issue and somewhat out of their control.
Why can't we just have the previous version of Chrome back? That worked fine.
Guys?
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Sunnylod 3/18/11 1:54 AM
Google wants to be king of all things yet they cannot make the stuff work correctly, just half hearted attempts and they don't respond or care about users why should they when they are starting to monopolise everything!!!  I am going back to IE at least it works!!
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash espoquest 3/19/11 10:28 AM
@ DOCALLA.... Your suggestion has worked, but it only works if i keep the properties window open (while i use chrome)???
When i click apply it says file name not known?
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Blue Murder 3/20/11 1:26 AM
Finally, after being patient for a very long time, I got fed up with Shockwave Flash crashing Chrome and googled for answers to the problem - and ended up here. After reading through the posts I'm none the wiser, I have to say. Rather the opposite.

I've begun using Firefox instead and it happens there too! However, if Shockwave Flash makes Chrome crash seven times out of ten, it crashes Firefox only two times out of ten.

And here's the really strange bit:

I have an excellent antivirus programme, but I've noticed when using chrome and gmail at the same time, and intend to reply to an email, or create an email, I get this mysterious little black icon of a man looking like he's peek-a-booing. This mysterious icon tries to look like an attachment, and for an attachment it's odd, because the cartooned man is visible (normally you'll have to click an attachment to make it visible). When it appears, the attachment feature is entirely occupied by this cartooned man, so I can't attach any files.

Now, I've noticed a correlation between the appearance of that bogus attachment and Shockwave crashing chrome, because when he appears in an email, Shockwave Flash crashes. I've never ever seen it happen when using gmail in Firefox. (Still Shockwave Flash is crashing Firefox from time to time).

If this is some kind of virus connected with Shockwave Flash, the antivirus programme should've detected it months ago, right?

However, I can get this annoying feature disappear when either closing down gmail (or chrome) entirely, and reopen gmail (or chrome) again - then the mysterious peek-a-booing cartooned man in his black little box is gone as an attachment. (Worth noting he appears in any kind of email).

THIS is what I have noticed in the Shockwave crash context.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash Glaspark 3/20/11 8:31 AM
I've also had same problem since running Chrome Beta, assumed that was at fault, decided to upgrade recently but still totally unusable, crashes without even attempting to watch or load video's.  Total waste of time.  IE9 seems a great improvement, so far.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash ufewl 3/20/11 9:17 PM
I tried to uninstall it but that did not seem to work so I downloaded and ran the latest version from adobe.
That fixed the page which would not work.
It might still have problems on other sites though.
I hate the product it is always causing problems.

When I tried to fix it on chrome it said to wait for thenext release of chrome but the fix I did fixed it
for both firefox and chrome.
Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash tonyjg 3/21/11 2:27 AM

Re: The following plug-in has crashed : Shockwave Flash docalla 3/21/11 2:40 AM
@espoquest are you putting the space in, for example if it is a shortcut icon then

1. Shut down chrome.
2. right click the shortcut chrome icon and select properties.
3. append " -enable-internal-flash" (without quotes) to the chrome.exe in target.
 "C:\Users\name\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe -enable-internal-flash"
click "apply" click "ok"
4. Double click the chrome shortcut to lanch chrome.

I have the most recent google chrome, my flashplayer is up to date, this happens about every 4 minutes when I am playing games on the web, while watching videos, surfing.  I get the plugin unresponsive after it crashes.  I am sick of this I am 1 day away from removing google chrome from ALL of my internet connected equipment and telling everyone I know to remove theirs.  Google Chrome has known of this problem for a very, very long time now and nothing has been done to correct the problem.  It is time to go to firefox.  http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-4.0&os=win&lang=en-US  For those of you who feel the same, here is the short cut.

Same problem here - started at the weekend, constant (10/10 times) crashes of Flash in Chrome since I clicked upgraded to a newer version by responding to the "You version of Flash is out of date and maybe in secure" message within Chrome. Does not crash my other browsers. Unless this is acknowledged/fixed soon, I will go back to FF.

Flash crashes often in chrome on my PC. No problem in IE or Firefox. I am running windows 7 and the latest version of chrome and flash. Norton AV.
>- Do you get the "plugin unresponsive" dialog
Yes, and it asks if I want to wait or close. If I wait sometime it starts working sometimes and most of the time it doesn't.
It happens most often with gmail, but also happens randomly at lots of other sites. Also, videos will not display when popping up
in a lightbox , but work fine in any other browser. I hope google can get this very widespread problem figured out soon.

Uninstalling Rapport, the security program supplied by various banks, finally resolved the problem for me. Finally.

Go to OPTIONS
click UNDER THE HOOD
click CONTENT SETTINGS
click PLUG-INS
click DISABLE INDIVIDUAL PLUG-INS
click DETAILS in top right corner
find SHOCKWAVE FLASH and if you see two versions you need to delete the most recent. This is the upper one on your screen. On my machine it's called 10.2.r154
click DISABLE and your SHOCKWAVE FLASH problem is solved.

With regard to Gears 0.5.33.0 I've simply, in the same way, disabled gears. Unfortunately there's no newer version so I'm gearless, so to speak.

However, it isn't cramping my style too much. It's obviously not a proper fix but it will stop Google Chrome from being un-usable, which it was latterly.

Good luck.

You know what, screw this Google. You've been pissing me around for over a month now, I think it's time for a change. All of that 'super-fast chrome smartest browser' hype is all BULL. Anyone know how to import bookmarks from Chrome to Firefox?

The following plug-in has crashed: Google Gears 0.5.33.0
The following plug-in has crashed: Shockwave

This is simply checking my email. Windows 7

I recently removed Google Talk Plug in for the same.

I guess I will now remove Chrome, then desktop if I need to.

Sad. I am such a Google fan.

Farewell Google Chrome - sorry, you've lost me (and many others) due to this glitch. Back to good old Explorer for me.

Hey everyone,

This thread was started a long time ago and is not the same issue that many of you are reporting today. Flash crashing is caused by a multitude of evolving reasons, and there isn't one singular cause.

That said, the recent update to Chrome 10.0 did cause constant Flash crashing and we have a fix coming to the Stable channel very soon. If you didn't experience constant Flash crashing until the release of 10.0, this should fix it for you. If you can't wait, you can download the Beta version of Chrome (11.0) listed in ref 1. Note that Beta is a preview channel and will lack some polish. Updates on this particular issue can be found in the thread in ref 2.

If you use Trusteer Rapport, there is a known conflict with the software that they've fixed recently. Upgrading to their latest version should alleviate it.

If you've been experiencing Flash crashes before 10.0, your issue may be caused by something different. Please start a new thread for these so we can investigate separately and not confuse the issues. As such, I'm also going to close this thread.

Thanks,
Toni
