When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? peijay 1/7/10 11:53 PM
Yesterday when I closed Chrome all my Extensions disappeared. I reloaded them back into the browser and once again when I reopened Chrome they were gone.

Anyone have the same problem, and a possible solution?

Chrome Version 4.0.249.43
On Windows XP Pro
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? alexc 1/10/10 2:08 AM
Same problem here. Last night my w7 ultimate 64 bit crashed at shutdown with blue screen and core dump (chrome or any other app was not running). After restart, chrome doesn't have any extension installed and did not remember my opened tabs.

same version of chrome - 4.0.249.43.

Same here!!
I've tried all channels of chrome including 4.0.295.0 dev. Running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Seems they stick around until I close chrome, and if I reinstall them, the settings are there still. FIX ME PLEASE!

hey i just had this happen too.  messed up.  win 7 x64 on 4.0.249.64 (35722) beta
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? alexc 1/17/10 12:37 AM
I was reporting earlier that the extensions disappeared after a crush.
I reinstalled all my extensions and the same problem did not occur so far.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? wmbenedetto 1/22/10 11:59 PM
This happened to me too. BSOD, and after restart, all my extensions are gone. :-(
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? erikthomsen 1/23/10 10:46 AM
This has happened to me twice now. Once after chrome crashed and again at random without a crash. Anyone find a fix for this?
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? peaston 1/25/10 4:01 AM
This happened to me after Chrome froze and wouldn't let me close it. I rebooted Windows (Win7) and when I opened Chrome after the reboot, all extensions were gone.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? osman 1/26/10 3:43 AM
I have the same problem. Today i upgraded to latest stable release from 3.0.something. Then i installed some extension, tried some features etc. But when i close and reopen the browser, all extensions are gone. tried a few times again, and it still continues.

i don't know if it's relevant, but when i open the browser, my bookmarks bar is detached. Then i choose the option "always show bookmarks bar" to make it always visible. but when i close and open the browser, it's detached again.

I think it looks like an issue with saving the settings etc in some place, but not having the correct right to keep it there. Maybe it's written in some file in some folder, where i don't have any write permission, or something like that...
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? alexc 1/26/10 10:29 AM
I was wondering if this is happening due to:
- an extension? maybe if you can provide more details? - i personally had rss notifier, google translate (which didn't work he he :) ), cooliris, amazon deals and some extension related to reviving filled info from lost forms - Lazarus i believe (nice name)
- some user permission/group? i have admin user
- chrome build? - 4.0.249.43

It's not because of the OS, as it appears it's happening in several OS's.

But unfortunately it's a pity that this thread grows bigger every day, without a solution to the problem.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? westonbarry 1/26/10 5:39 PM
I did a system restore back 2 days and it fixed everything
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? BigTiger 1/28/10 5:55 AM
Downloaded a few extensions yesterday. Shut off computer and they were gone this morning. Downloaded 2 this morning, closed Chrome, only one remained. Where are the run-a-ways going or who's stealing them when the lights go out?

On another computer, the extensions are still available that I downloaded yesterday as well.

Both are running XP - OS.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Shadow_Kirst 1/29/10 6:01 AM
Come on Google. This is not an isolated incident. Give us an answer to settle the confusion. I am kind of fed up of downloading the extensions every session. I think I will return to Firefox + extensions until Google provides a stable extensions module.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? tall27 1/30/10 8:54 AM
Same problem here.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? johndengler 1/31/10 12:22 PM
Happening to me too.  But only on my Windows 7 (64bit) machine.  Not Windows 7 (32bit) Netbook.  Both have exactly the same extensions installed and only the 64 bit machine loses the extensions.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? ericisshort 2/5/10 8:31 AM
I'm having the same problem, running win7 32-bit. Its happened to me a couple of times, and the problem seems to arise from an improper shutdown. I had it happen to me on a BSOD crash, and also when my computer has run out of battery while sleeping.

Find a fix, please!
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? ericisshort 2/5/10 8:35 AM
Also, this problem is not limitted to extensions. Whenever this reset occurs, the page history and bookmarks persist, but the bookmark bar disappears, and the removed pages from the start page returns.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Corey_G 2/7/10 7:11 AM
I think I'm having the same problem. It seemed to start happening when I tried to clicked the chromed bird button before my Wifi connection was established. Now all of my extension icons are blank and everything is missing an icon in the extensions page.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? dfaulknerd 2/8/10 11:03 PM
Same issue, XP Pro, latest build. Not happening so far on my work computer using Vista Enterprise.

Hello, does anyone at Google read these posts?
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? folkxrock 2/10/10 8:07 AM
Just happened to me with Win7 Pro 64-bit.

I'm using Win XP and this has happened twice now, all my extensions going away - wish it stored my extensions somewhere
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? PoseNicker 2/12/10 8:51 AM
Happened to me last night.  WTF???
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? BlueSword 2/13/10 12:57 AM
Me too. Chrome must have update to last stable channel 4.0.249.89. Closed win7 and shutdown. Now at reboot launching chrome for 1st time I find all extensions are gone.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? DrunkDwarf 2/13/10 8:34 AM
Same happened to me, running Windows XP with Chrome 4.0.249.89. I closed Chrome with multiple tabs open, and when I re-opened Chrome, the extensions had disappeared, it didn't remember my previous tabs and the bookmark bar had detached itself, though the Bookmarks themselves remained intact.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? jdukemd 2/13/10 11:35 PM
One more.  XP, running dev channel.  Was working fine and now all extensions have disappeared.  No word from Google?
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? ydhillon 2/14/10 4:52 PM
Same problem with Windows Vista Home Premium.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? killakow 2/15/10 8:38 PM
I had the same problem. I never even had a crash. I'm using windows 7 home premium and after i had my computer in hibernate, i went to log back in and all my extensions are gone?? very frustrating as I had about 15 extensions installed. grrrrrrrrrrr google
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? aaronbliss 2/17/10 9:38 PM
This has happened to me 4 times in the past 2 weeks. I'm getting sick and tired of having to find and reinstall my extensions since I have about 8 of them. Why is this not being fixed?
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? KidsOnTheBeat 2/20/10 12:24 PM
This has happened to me numerous times since I've started using Chrome - at least a half dozen times, including about 5 minutes ago.  Running Windows 7 x64.  Like the above poster, I'm also getting sick and tired of it because the hassle of finding, installing, and setting up options in multiple extensions over and over again gets real old real fast.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Michael Ernst 2/22/10 4:04 PM
My extensions also keep disappearing! In various OS, both 32 and 64 bit.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Amortentia 2/26/10 9:04 AM
This just happened to me for the first time. Nothing crashed. I had the browser open, then I closed it, and when I reopened it, everything was gone. Not a single extension to be found. All of my bookmarks are fine. Even the bookmark bar. But zero extensions. Looks like it happens often to people. I was just starting to really get used to using Chrome as my default, but if I can't keep extensions, then I don't think I'll be doing that anymore.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Amortentia 2/26/10 9:04 AM
I should mention I'm running Windows 7, 32 bit.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? jackstem 2/27/10 6:14 PM
I just started using Chrome. I like how much faster it is than some of the other browsers I've used. I found the extensions but they all disappear after closing the browser. Either Google doesn't know this is going on, or they are ignoring the complaints. If this isn't fixed soon I'm going back to Firefox.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Savon duJour 2/28/10 4:23 PM
Chrome updated overnight and the theme and all the extensions disappeared.  I did a couple of system restores to different points and didn't get them back. Nor did I get an old version of Chrome back which annoyed me.   System restore used to get a previous version back.  I've spent hours finding and reinstalling the extensions I like and I've kept a screenshot of the Extensions page so if it happens again it won't take long to fix.

Also, I've changed Google Update in Computer Management/Services to manual and unchecked it from starting at boot in msconfig.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? pyxelz 3/1/10 10:40 PM
I, too, have had the same problem. Twice, actually. Both times, there was no warning. Everything worked perfectly, I closed Chrome, opened it later, and all extensions and the theme were gone. Luckily, settings for the extensions were preserved, so reinstalling them is a cinch.

I'm running Win7 Pro. Chrome version 4.1.249.1021.
It's hard to tell if this is associated with chrome updates since the update process is invisible.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? KidsOnTheBeat 3/11/10 6:02 AM
I don't use many extensions, so it's likely the last ones I installed included either LastPass, Mouse Stroke, or Google Quick Scroll.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Shawn (Googler) 3/11/10 2:37 PM
Hey guys,

Sounds like something is awry. I have a suspicion that the preferences file isn't being correctly updated. If possible, can you guys install an extension, close Google Chrome and then send your preferences file to us through the link provided in Reference 1 below?

Your 'Preferences' file can be found in the User Data folder. For example for XP, it'd be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

Please also include information about the extension you attempted to install and any other information about the incident.

Thanks!
Shawn
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? ivoencarnacao 3/11/10 5:55 PM
And what should we do, if when clicking on the "Install" button of an extension, we get a .crx file to download instead?

This is preventing me from using Google Chrome at 150% ( i want to try some extensions, please!)

Windows Vista here, with latest stable release.

Tia!

Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? MarcSaegesser 3/12/10 1:40 PM
I'm having the same problem where my extensions go away after closing Chrome.  I installed the Google Voice extension and verified that it worked correctly.  I also saw that a new directory was created in my User Data/Default/Extensions directory.

I closed Chrome and that Extensions directory was still there.  When I started Chrome the next time that directory was removed while Chrome was starting.  After that I have no extensions.  It makes no difference what extensions I install, they all vanish.

I've also noticed that some of my options changes are being wiped out.  For example, I select "Never save  passwords" and close the options.  If I go back and check it the options is still correct.  If I open a second Chrome instance the options are correct.  Once I close Chrome and restart it the options go back to their original settings.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Shawn (Googler) 3/12/10 4:10 PM
Hey Ennis_a, anders_royce,

Thanks for submitting a report! @anders - it seems like your 'Preferences' file didn't successfully attach itself. Would you mind trying again? I'll review these files and get back to you guys.

@ivoencarnacao: The .crx file is a Google Chrome extension installer file. When you save and run the file, it'll take you through that particular extension's installation process.

Best,
Shawn
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Shawn (Googler) 3/12/10 4:11 PM
@MarcSaegesser: That's interesting. Are you willing to provide your 'Preferences' file so that we can troubleshoot? You can use the contact form linked to in my previous post to send it.

Thanks,
Shawn
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? MarcSaegesser 3/12/10 7:07 PM
@Shawn:  Uploaded my current preferences file.  Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? ivoencarnacao 3/12/10 7:11 PM
@Shawn: that was the behavior i was expecting, but instead i get a popup window stating Chrome can't open the file.

And even with the .crx file associated with Chrome, i get another popup window to download the file again.

I can post some screenshots of the popups if it helps.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? asg6000 3/13/10 6:32 AM
I had this happen twice on my vista 32 bit machine.  This time, I closed chrome with multiple tabs open by clicking the top right red x (I usually take the time to close each tab one by one before shutting chrome). I got a BSOD while chrome was trying to close. Rebooted and I tried to open chrome before my wifi connection was established, and the bookmark bar had been detached, all extensions gone and the (most annoying) "Use the New Tab Page" was selected as the default home page.  I am not going to bother with extensions anymore.  (I still have to rely on DownThemAll on Mozilla for download accelerators anyway).
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? baxcanna 3/13/10 1:29 PM
This happens to me every time without fail if I have chrome open and my computer BSODs after trying to wake from a cold sleep. It also sometimes happens if I BSOD at other times.
Googler - this appears to be the main issue in this thread, not a "new extensions" issue that you seem to be focusing on for some reason.
It's straight forward - if the PC crashes and chrome doesn't shut down properly, then everything is lost.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? JonChu 3/14/10 7:50 AM
This happens to me whenever Chrome hangs and I have to kill the processes through task manager. The bookmarks bar disappears (although I keep the bookmarks), and all my extensions are gone. Previous settings for passwords and such are reset. I have submitted my preferences file.

@bardcan, I suspect that this is the case.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? jesse.pepper 3/14/10 8:26 PM
Any progress on this?
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 3/15/10 5:51 AM
In my case, it has happened at least four or five times that I installed a bunch of extensions using Chromium, then later when I run Chrome (using the same User Data folder where all of my Chromium settings and such are stored), it erased all of the folders in the *User Data/Default/Extensions/* directory. The next time that I ran Chromium, it was able to detect all of the installed extensions, but none of them worked because the files were all gone.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Shawn (Googler) 3/15/10 11:50 AM
I see several different issues being reported on this thread so I'll address the two most prominent ones. If your issue isn't one described below, please start a new conversation for the community to help out (@ivoencarnacao, it may be helpful for you to do so - that way your conversation doesn't get lost with the others.)

For users who experience extensions disappearing (and other browser settings) after closing Google Chrome:
Thanks for those Preferences files, guys. It doesn't seem like any corruption of the file happened after the browser was closed. But it's still important to see where/when the Preferences file is being accessed/locked/modified. If you're familiar with using Sysinternals Process Monitor, can you help with the following:

1. Download Microsoft Process Monitor from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
2. Open Process Monitor and press Ctrl+L. In the new window that opens, press "Reset."
3. Create the following filter in the window that opens:
Select "Path" in the first box, "excludes" in the second box, and type "Preferences" in the third box then select "Exclude" in the fourth box. Click Add.
Click OK.
4. From "Filter" menu, select "Drop Filtered Events."
5. Install an extension
6. Close Google Chrome
7. After several seconds, the main Process Monitor window will log events. Press Ctrl+S to save these events in a PML file. Note the 'Path' to which your saved file will be located.
8. Send the saved .PML file to us (Use Reference 1 below)

For users who experience extensions disappearing after a BSOD:
There are a few pieces of information that would be helpful to know here:
- Can you guys provide the computer dump file? (You can find instructions and how to send in Reference 2 below)
- What antivirus software do you use?

For any reports, please include any steps/details that you verify will reproduce the issue.

Thanks,
Shawn
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Ennis_a 3/15/10 12:00 PM
Shawn,

There are no minidump files on my computer. If it helps, the BSOD is END_OF_WINDOWS_NT_EVALUATION_PERIOD.

I have the beta of Win7 and i haven't gotten around to upgrading yet so it reboots every 2 hours on purpose.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? alexc 3/15/10 12:08 PM
hi guys... happy to see that this issue is being taken care

It happened to me so long ago, I deleted the minidump files... if it happens again, I will be happy to provide the set of files..
Related to the antivirus question, I'm using AVG 9.0.790

Cheers
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? MarcSaegesser 3/15/10 2:39 PM
I've uploaded a .PML file and I also think I've figured out the problem.

The process monitor showed that the CreateFile() to open the Preferences file was failing with an error of PRIVILEGE NOT HELD and the last modified time on the file was on 3/11.

I downloaded the subinacl tool from (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=E8BA3E56-D8FE-4A91-93CF-ED6985E3927B&displaylang=en) which lets you view and change file ACL data.  What I found was that Preferences had no permission access control entries (PACE) and thus could not be opened by anyone.  Using subinacl I added in PACE entries to match those of other files in that directory.

I started Chrome and opened tools/Extensions and all of my previously installed extensions showed up in the list.  None of them worked because their directories in /Extensions had been removed.  I un-installed all the extensions and then installed a new one and it still shows up after restarting Chrome.

Now that I know the problem probably was actually triggered last Thursday it sparks some memories.  I'm pretty sure I had a BSoD that day.  BSoDs are a common occurrence for this computer due to lousy video drivers.  I've had a few other BSoDs since then and many, many before.  Also on Thursday I ran the CCleaner utility to clear out some muck from the registry.  I specifically unchecked all the Chrome cleaning items but it might have still done something to the files.

I appear to be back in business now.  Hope some of this helps.  Let me know if there's anything else I can do.

@Shawn i have two other threads regarding this issue in the topic about "install/uinstall issues" unfortunately with no replies.

@MarcSaegesser: Thanks a lot for that bit of info and for sending over your PML file. Taking a look at it and will get back to you and everyone on this thread.

Thanks again everyone for sharing these specific details as it undoubtedly helps all the others who are experiencing this and reading along.

Best,
Shawn
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Shawn (Googler) 3/16/10 5:45 PM
Hey guys,

Just confirming what MarcSaegesser already mentioned: in the event that a computer crash, you may want to verify whether or not your Google Chrome Preferences file still has access permissions enabled or you also may want to use utility software to clean up your computer.

To verify your Preferences file access for XP:
1. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
2. Find the 'Preferences' file. Right click and select 'Properties'
3. Click on the 'Security' tab and make sure that your permissions are set to 'Allow'
4. Also click 'Advanced.' In the 'Permissions' tab of this new window, remove anything in the list that is listed as <not inherited> and make sure 'Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply....' is checked.
5. Click OK.

The instructions are similar for other Windows OS's.

Best,
Shawn
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? baxcanna 3/16/10 9:48 PM
Thanks Shawn. I completed the above steps and restarted. There's no noticeable change.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? baxcanna 3/16/10 9:49 PM
On a side note - the ability to 'sync' or backup extension sets in chrome would largely negate this problem. Is this on the books at all?
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? KidsOnTheBeat 3/17/10 6:24 AM
I'm going to second bardcan's suggestion for extension syncing.  We can already use Chrome to sync bookmarks, so it would be awesome if our extensions (and settings) could be linked with our Google accounts.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? baxcanna 3/17/10 7:02 AM
If the chrome settings could be saved as well (including whether you're on the public or beta, dev channel) that would be truly impressive.
Oh, and enabling saved tabs across computers while you're at it ;)
Seriously though, I use Freshstart extension with google's awesome bookmark sync to achieve this. It gives you this warm, fuzzy feeling knowing that your browsing session is available anywhere you go. I want that feeling for the Chrome app itself because I'm tired of spending 20 minutes reinstalling all the extensions every time it crashes.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 3/17/10 12:22 PM
One thing that would be very handy for this particular problem (the extensions directory being wiped out, while still being detected as installed) would be a way to manually re-download all of the installed extensions. That way, you could just click the re-download button to get them back. Moreover, it would also allow you to update all of the extensions. The Update Extensions button only works on extensions that are currently enabled and only if they have an update available. If the extension is disabled or is already the latest version, then you are out of luck.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? baxcanna 3/17/10 8:05 PM
Then I guess I'm out of luck ;)
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? gtr225 3/17/10 11:01 PM
Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit w/Chrome 5.0.307.11 beta and just had the same issue of extensions disappearing, I will try to submit my preferences file.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? gtr225 3/17/10 11:09 PM
@Shawn The page to submit my preference file is only for Windows.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? flugerbill 3/18/10 7:14 PM
So is there a solution to this issue yet?  This just happened to me last nite, seems like others have reinstalled extensions and theme only to have them just disappear again.  Also, my Preferences file does not appear as folder, but rather as an unknown file type.  When I look at the properties there is no security tab.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Shawn (Googler) 3/19/10 2:34 PM
Still looking into it guys. We still suspect that some other program is trying to modify/access the Google Chrome Preferences file and in the process of doing so, it's locking it so that your preferences (including extensions) aren't being saved. To figure out what program it is, can you guys give any information on:

- what antivirus you use?
- if you use any privacy or cleaner utility software that may be blocking/modifying/accessing Google Chrome files?

Thanks,
Shawn

I use Microsoft Security Essentials.
I have CCleaner installed but haven't used it in a while.

I'm having the same issue as others with my extensions (only running feedly), theme, and settings being deleted.

I'm running Norton Antivirus adn no other cleaners.

Same thing, will submit preference file.

I have had this problem several times as well for no apparent reason and I was about to revert to Firefox when I found all my settings in a directory. How do I point chrome to the extensions directory? I couldn't figure out how to do it in the options/
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? paul2011 3/25/10 6:55 PM
Any Updates? I am using Vista and I thought Google Chrome was my new browser and planned to migrate from my bloated Firefox, and now this?! OMG. I thought Chrome is out of beta?!
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Shyrak 3/25/10 9:30 PM
Hey Guys,

I have been having this sort of problem for a while.  When I close and re-open Google Chrome all my extensions are gone and all other settings are back to default.  The only things that stay are my web history and bookmarks.  For me this seems to happen randomly for no reason at all.  Sometimes it will be good for weeks, other times it will reset itself several times a day.

I have done what Shawn said adding to MarcSaegesser's suggestion.  I would just like to point out that the file path to get to Google Chrome preferences is a bit different in Vista.  Here it is for anyone having trouble finding it:
C:/User/Eric/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/User Data/Default

Please note that the folder 'AppData' is a hidden folder so you may need to adjust your settings to get into it.  To change your settings so that you can access the folder, follow these steps:
1. Click the round blue Start thing in the left corner
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click Folder Options
4. Click the View tab
5. Click Show hidden files and folders
6. If you want to see system files as well, unclick Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
7. Click OK
(Source:  http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1521/how_to_view_hidden_and_system_files_and_folders_in_vista/)

Hopefully this can be of help to some people.  I will report back if I have any further difficulties.  Good luck to everyone trying to solve this annoying problem.  And thank-you Shawn for your investigation on the matter :)

Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? jcott28 3/29/10 7:52 AM
Thought I'd chime in, as I just had this happen to me for the first time.  I've been a chrome user for months without a problem.  Over the weekend, I had my browser open and computer in sleep mode.  This isn't a problem, as I do this every day after work.  But sadly, my power ran out while it was in sleep mode.  So there was no BSOD and nothing running when the computer died.

Upon reboot, the exact same symptoms.  Bookmarks bar hidden, all extensions gone.  My saved password are still there.  I wish there was a way to just see a list of the extensions I had installed as I can't recall all of them I've had them installed for so long.  I'm on Windows XP, SP2.  My permissions on that preferences file is fine.  The computer has McAfee running on it, but again, my computer was in sleep mode when the power just ran out, so I don't believe anything would have been running.  But the browser was open at the time of power loss.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? baxcanna 3/29/10 8:01 AM
Yes, for me this is definitely a problem that occurs when the PC crashes trying to wake from sleep mode (I was over-clocking at the time and suspect that booting from cold temperatures was the culprit).
My solution now is to take screenshots of my extensions for easy re-install. Feels pretty primitive though considering the sophistication of chrome.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 3/29/10 11:50 AM
The permissions on the file may be one cause of this problem, but it is not the only explanation since it also occurs on FAT systems, not just NTFS.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Toni (Googler) 3/30/10 1:48 PM
We're still looking into this, everyone.

@jscott, @bardcan - If you've verified that your Preferences file has access permissions as Shawn instructed in a couple of posts above, can you send in the requested information previously requested? I've re-included the specifics here for your issue:

For users who experience extensions disappearing after a BSOD:
There are a few pieces of information that would be helpful to know here:
- Can you guys provide the computer dump file? (You can find instructions and how to send in the Reference below - please note under 'Steps to reproduce' that this is for extensions disappearing)
- What antivirus software do you use?

For any reports, please include any steps/details that you verify will reproduce the issue.

Thanks,
Toni

Done. (mini-dump submitted)
I'm using Avast anti-virus.
Thanks for responding Toni!
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? tjbinno 4/2/10 7:59 AM
And this is my third time this week that my extensions are lost and I have to re-install.  Getting to be mighty tiresome.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? webguy16 4/2/10 8:34 AM
This has happened to me a few times in the last week as well. I have submitted the mini-dump via the computer crash report link as requested. My antivirus is Avira AntiVir Personal and am using Windows Vista. Any help or advice on how to fix this would be appreciated...
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? webguy16 4/2/10 9:08 AM
Im not sure if this helps or not, but i forgot to mention that my bookmarks toolbar is hidden when this happens instead of set to always show like it was before the crash/restart...
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Eric Canham 4/2/10 6:38 PM
well this happened to me.  about a week ago i closed chrome, upon reopening it all my extensions were gone.

i reimaged my netbook the other day using windows backup restore.

upon reboot, all my chrome extensions where there....HOWEVER

all the new bookmarks i had added in chrome (i use book mark syncing) since the image were erased! the only ones which remained were the ones that were there at the time when i made the original image!!!

google this is INSANE!!!! how can you claim it is the cloud storing data if i was able to whip out a fair chunk of my bookmark library just by restoring an older image?!?! god what am i to do now???
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? charlesdb 4/4/10 7:36 AM
Same here.  All my extesnions have disappeared.  I'm back with Firefox, which is a shame because I thought Chrome was a better Browser, certainly faster imo.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? CastleBravo4 4/4/10 10:13 PM
Not quite the same here, but almost. I have had many extensions installed for about a week with no previous problems and just five minutes ago all the files for them disappeared. All of them show up in the list of extensions, but they don't work. I went to check the files for all of them and the folder was completely empty. Every single file and folder for every extension was gone. All my bookmarks and everything are still here, but all the files in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\(user)\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions are gone. I'm using version 5.0.342.8.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? kristain 4/4/10 10:33 PM
I am also having the same problem. It seems to arise from an improper shutdown. It happen to my system on a BSOD crash, and also when my computer has run out of battery while sleeping.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? vulpine 4/4/10 11:26 PM
This happened to me last night. I was too much pissed off with this weird behavior as I had lot of extensions installed
But however after re installing 'em, extensions automatically showed up like they were before. So that was some relief.

I figured out that this thing happened due to improper shutdown of chrome! I closed the chrome and with in a second I opened it again only to find the chrome like a newly installed one!!

nevertheless still I use the chrome because it's clean and simple. Hope Google addresses this problem as soon as possible.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? DarkUFO - Blogger TC 4/6/10 6:43 AM
Same problem here. Just restarted chrome and they were all missing. Extensions folder totally empty :(

Hopefully I can find a backup.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Elwen 4/10/10 8:43 AM
Same problem here. All extensions disappeared after I turned off my PC. I use Vista and since I am installing all necessary software now, I didn't use any antivirus nor any other cleaning/ antispyware etc. software in that time.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? funnyjk 4/11/10 3:50 PM
has this issue been answered yet, this keeps happening to me for no reason.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Clusterfunk 4/11/10 8:02 PM
If you are using "Click and Clean" extension, as I was both times this happened, try not using it. It seems it caused problems for other users as well:

Nope, not using it
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? abutani75 4/13/10 5:09 AM
I installed Privoxy extension last night to manage dual profiles (proxy at work and direct connection at home). Shut down the system. Started it back up today. Fired up Chrome which came up and hung. Force closed it and relaunched it. Got the message "Whoa your browser has crashed and it will need to restart". Clicked restart and now ALL my extensions (dozen plus) of them along with my theme etc are all gone. No trace of them. Restarted the browser several times since then. No luck. Am running Chrome version 4.1.249.1045 (42898) on Win XP SP3. - Amit B

Hey, do you mean if you reinstall they come back again?

I had the same thing happen to my extensions this evening. The space for the buttons is there, and pressing one gives this error:

My extensions are gone now to.  First on one computer, the next day on another.

Google: please reply before we all abandon ship.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Toni (Googler) 4/22/10 1:27 AM
@webguy16 - Thanks for sending in your minidump file. It looks like your Intel graphics driver is causing your computer crash. We recommend updating your graphics drivers to see if the problem goes away. You can find updated drivers here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Default.aspx?lang=eng. If that doesn't help, we recommend contacting Intel about why your computer is crashing.

@SilverFoxLa - Your issue sounds different and more extension-specific. There's a suggestion in a related thread here that you should try: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=2ed012534420b72c&hl=en

Everyone - Thanks for your continued reports and patience on this. As mentioned before, we're still looking into this issue. To help us investigate, please continue to follow Shawn's instructions:

For users who experience extensions disappearing (and other browser settings) after closing Google Chrome:
It's important to see where/when the Preferences file is being accessed/locked/modified.

Ensure your computer drivers are updated. Two other pieces of information that would be helpful to know:
- Can you guys provide the computer dump file? (instructions and how to send in Reference 2 below)
- What antivirus software do you use?
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? jcott28 4/22/10 7:13 AM
My experience, as I detailed in an earlier post, didn't occur at a BSOD or closing chrome.  My computer was in sleep mode (not hibernate) and ran out of power.  Chrome happened to be opened when I put the computer to sleep.  Upon rebooting and re-opening chrome, the extensions were gone.  When I manually reinstalled the extensions, my settings were still there though, so that was a bit of silver lining.  But since I had no crash, there is no dump.

Computers will crash, reboot, etc.  It happens.  That's not the issue.  The problem is that if a computer crashes, reboots, etc, it shouldn't break the software that was open at the time.

I use McAfee VirusScan Enterprise + antiSpyware Enterprise 8.7.0i
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? heterodyne 4/25/10 6:42 AM
Still happening to me, and this is the last straw.

I've had it with Chrome, and will be going back to Firefox. What kind of QA control leaves such a serious, annoying error around without doing anything about it but asking for 'preference files' and 'dump' files for months? The earliest message in this thread is January.

I hate to go back to Firefox since I really like Chrome, but these problems are unacceptable. Extensions aren't just a pointless add-on, to many of us they are essential security and safety features.... and to me and many others, the last straw.

So long, Google.... stick to search engines and Gmail.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? tjbinno 4/26/10 5:10 PM
Well after going for about a week with no loss of extensions, today it has happened twice.

At least I found an easier re-install process, I set up a session with all my extension pages open and saved em in session manager.  This is very tiresome even with a semi easy way to re-install.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? baxcanna 4/26/10 9:41 PM
Haha... yep, that's what I did too (with session manager)
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? mr_kay 4/28/10 2:36 PM
Same thing happened to me after a system crash.
I don't know if it helps but seemed interesting that "Turn off the lights" still works fine, when all other extensions have gone.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? zaa 4/28/10 6:48 PM
this just happened to me too.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Sashazur 4/29/10 11:36 AM
This has happened to me twice in the last week (once before the most recent update, once after), I have Windows 7 64-bit home premium. It may have something to do with the fact that typically I shut down my PC *without* first exiting Chrome, and during shutdown I see Chrome show a crash message. But if that's the cause then... a) doing this doesn't kill my extensions every time, only rarely, and b) why does Chrome crash at all on shutdown? Seems like a major bug...
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? memememeee 5/5/10 4:01 PM
Google, users shouldn't have to monitor processes to see why extensions disapper. *shakes head* tsk tsk tsk.

Lost my extensions today, including ones I worked on settings in detail...too much work to make me try again. I'm going back to trusty firefox.

NEVER had a similar event in Firefox. Bad, Google. BAD.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? saravanant 5/10/10 5:01 PM
I have a similar issue but in Ubuntu. For me , the only setting I seem to lose is the set of search engines. If I add a  search engine, then it disappears when I restart my browser.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? chedderslam 5/12/10 1:19 PM
Me too.  Adblock and adblock button disappears.  I'm going over to ff for a few months till google sorts this.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? mtf612 5/13/10 11:16 AM
Similar issue here. This has happened to me three times now. Oddly the behavior happens to me when I close chrome abruptly, while pages are loading for example. While my bookmarks dont get deleted my extensions, theme, and settings do.

I recommend everyone in this thread use Google Chrome Backup (link below). Pretty easy to setup and will backup ALL of your settings, extensions, and themes for you. I just had this problem occur to me yesterday and the backup program restored my settings easily.

Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 5/13/10 11:54 AM
Hmm, this has not happened to me in a while now (since at least March 15th). I have been able to run Chromium, Google Chrome, SRWare Iron, Maple Studio ChromePlus, and Comodo Dragon using the same UserData directory without losing the extension files. There have been a bunch of changes, so I’m not sure exactly what caused it to stop. However, the change that is most likely to have fixed it, and the one I would recommend is that I updated each browser to the latest version.

People who are still experiencing this error should state what version they are using.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? skilledbachelor 5/13/10 1:42 PM
After not happening for about a month this problem occurred again earlier this week with a twist that may be useful to those charged with debugging it.

Not only did I lose my extensions, but the "Under the Hood" options that I had set up earlier were also lost when they were reset to the defaults.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? crgrafton 5/13/10 9:22 PM
I believe that this is caused by a combination of being subscribed to the beta or dev channel, and the use of Quick & Clean.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Paaaat 5/15/10 5:07 PM
Happened to me as well this morning, and numerous times before. Running x64 bit Win 7. Blue screen on shutdown last night, this morning, no extensions.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? libor.adl 5/16/10 4:30 AM
The same problem here. Chrome: 5.0.375.29 beta, OS: LinuxMint 8 Gnome. No system crash happened, no unexpected Chrome closing.
I can see all extensions in extension option, but not visible in toolbar.

this is getting so annoying. and for the person who said it erases the Under The Hood settings, mine does that too, along with erasing all extensions. (i only have ONE, AdBlock) how can this be such a big/confusing problem someone like Google cant figure it out? luckily i hate firefox because of the crashes, so im sticking with Chrome no matter what, but i want this fixed!
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? JoshGrot 5/18/10 8:18 AM
I've been experiencing the same problem over the course of several months...hadn't had it occur again though until yesterday...is anyone from Google involved with trying to find a solution to this, or do they just want us all on Firefox?
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? jcott28 5/18/10 8:28 AM
Sadly, there has been no google participation in this thread since April 22. I've installed the latest beta so perhaps it has the fix in there :)  On a bright note, I have found that my settings remain for some extensions, even though the extensions are gone.  i.e. My ProxySwitchy! rules were there once I reinstalled the extension.  I do make certain to close down my browser now when done in case the machine crashes or runs out of battery while I'm away.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? skilledbachelor 5/18/10 9:28 AM
Concerning the "Under the Hood" options:

The "Under the Hood" settings are not erased. Instead, they get reset to the defaults; the defaults have all but one of the boxes flagged. If you haven't changed any of these settings, you will not notice the difference.

As one of default settings is "Use DNS pre-fetching to improve page load performance", one will have to use "Click&Clean" extension more often to reduce the cache size.

One extension delete episode occurred when the "Click&Clean" emptied the cache upon Chrome close and appeared to also delete itself and the rest of my extensions; I watched it happen.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 5/18/10 1:55 PM
I understand people’s frustrations with this issue. I myself was extremely irritated the half-dozen or so times that it occurred to me. However, please note that the Chromium guys are actually quite busy handling lots of issues (presumably many of which are more critical than this). You can see for yourself at the Chromium issue tracker: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/list. This specific forum is for Google Chrome (a derivation of the more general Chromium project). As such, issues that are specific to Google Chrome are more likely to get addressed here faster than issues that are part of the Chromium code base since that requires sending the issue and any patches to that team for implementation into the trunk.

That said, could people *please* report the version of Chrome/Chromium/etc. that they are running when they post. As I have said, I stopped experiencing this issue two months ago, probably because I am using a newer version in which it was fixed. So if you are still getting this, it could be that your version is out of date. Look in the Wrench menu for the About box.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? chedderslam 5/18/10 2:02 PM
4.1.249.1064 and I am losing all extension on close.  No crash or anything, just losing them.  bookmarks bar is floating and home button disappears as well.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 5/18/10 3:15 PM
Try installing a single extension (any one), then close Chrome and open it again. Is the extension gone?

Also try looking in the "User Data\Extensions" folder (by default it will be "%localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions"). Each extension has a folder in there. If the folders remain but the files and folders inside get erased, then try seeing if you can check (and if necessary) set the permissions on the Extensions folder (actually, your login account should have read/write access to the whole %localappdata% directory and its subdirectories.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? jcott28 5/18/10 3:50 PM
Thanks for the info Synetech, but that's not the issue.  Installing extensions is no problem.  Shutting down and restarting isn't even the issue as far as i can tell.  This issue seems to happen in some state where chrome is open and the machine either dies (BSOD), is in a hibernate state and runs out of battery, etc.  And chrome being open and running prior to this event.

The folders disappear after this takes place.  it's not a security issue, I have checked for that.  And the extensions typically work for months.  But when this event takes place, everything is wiped.  There are some others posting in this thread which are talking about slightly different experiences which I think could use your advice.  But the main issue in the thread is your extensions being deleted after the system dies.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 5/18/10 6:02 PM
Well “dies” is a relative term. It looks likes crashing could be either at the application level (ie Chrome crashes and gives that “Woah! Chrome crashed” message), or at the OS level (eg a BSOD). In my case when I first noticed it, it was not even a crash at all, it was Chrome running, using the same User Data directory as Chromium (which was not a problem before that, and is no longer a problem now).

There are a couple of tests that you can do the next time Chrome and/or Windows crashes (make sure to do them *before* you open Chrome again after the crash).

One test is to open the folder "%localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions" and check to see if the extension folders still have their contents. Then run Chrome and check again. Finally, close Chrome and check once more.

Another test is to do the same as the previous test, but before the opening Chrome step, open "%localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data". Then use Notepad (or other text-editor) to open the file "Local State". Now find the line containing "exited_cleanly". Change the "false," to "true," (without the quotes). Next, open the "Default" folder and repeat with the "Preferences" file. Now open Chrome and check, then close Chrome and check again.

Report back if and at what point the extensions get wiped. (To be honest, I’m pretty sure there was a bug in older versions—ie versions that came out soon after the extension framework was first implemented—that caused Chrome to wipe out extensions when run after a crash. Later versions could recover from a crash without losing extensions.)
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? mtf612 5/18/10 9:26 PM
Happened to me for the fouth time today. Running Windows 7 (64bit) with Chrome 4.1.249.1064 (45376). It always happens when I close chrome with no tabs remaining (close the final tab to close chrome).
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 5/18/10 9:29 PM
@mtf612, do you mean that it doesn’t happen if you close Chrome by clicking the red X in the corner of the window instead of by closing the last tab?
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? mtf612 5/19/10 3:36 PM
@synetech
Happened today again. 5th time total. It happens when I close the last Tab. I have my settings to restore tabs after closing and reopening.

Oddly my history and favorites are never lost (except when I restore a backup). Rather, my extensions, my theme, and my settings are lost. More odd is that when i reinstall an extension, the old settings for it are still there.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? JoshGrot 5/19/10 6:10 PM
@synetech

My version of Chrome is 5.0.375.38
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? ZHF 5/19/10 10:21 PM
Could it be due to a conflict between Chrome and another browser, like Firefox?
I have two browsers, this only happens once after I used Firefox for a day.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Balandran 5/19/10 11:11 PM
I installed chrome extensions last month, yesterday (first time) the extensions disappeared. The only thing I did was a Vista update (can't cancel it).
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 5/20/10 9:41 AM
@mtf612, try closing Chrome with the red X in the corner of the window instead of closing the last tab (it should not make a difference, but then again if it does…)

It’s not odd that your history and bookmarks remain intact since they are stored in their own files that have nothing to do with extensions. It’s also not odd that your extension settings remain since they too are stored separately (in the local store).

If your theme and other general settings are lost in addition to your extensions, then it is because your Preferences file is either getting corrupted or being deleted.

One thing you can try is to move the profile. Move (or better yet, copy) the folder
"%localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data" to another location (make sure it’s one that you know your user account has write access to). Then find the Chrome executable (for most people it’s probably "%localappData%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"). Run that with the argument --user-data-dir. So for example, instead of running Chrome the usual way, you would run it by going to Start->Run, then enter

  "%localappData%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --user-data-dir="X:\Blah\User Data"

This runs Chrome using your settings and stuff from a different location (in this case the User Data folder was copied to the Blah folder on the X:\ drive). You can then see if it continues to have problems. (If it does not, perhaps the drive that you normally run it on is low on disk space?)
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 5/20/10 9:47 AM
@ZHF, I highly doubt that it is a conflict with another browser (at least certainly not FireFox, IE, Opera, Safari, etc.) If you are running another Chromium based browser using the same "User Data" folder, then yes, it does seem to have been a problem with an older version of Chrome and/or Chromium which has since been fixed.

@Balandran, I highly doubt that an OS update would have any bearing on this since the problem appears to be with certain files in Chrome’s "User Data" folder, and the update should have nothing to do with it. One thing you might want to check however is for disk space. OS updates often use up a bunch of disk space and if the system suddenly runs low (particularly if you are running Chrome at the time), it might cause corruption of some files if Chrome tries to write to them (for example, a couple of my monthly History files are stunted and incomplete—much smaller than they should be—because I kept running out of space, so Chromium was unable to expand the files to save the history to them).
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 5/20/10 10:11 AM
People who are losing their extensions can try a little experiment to test if there is a problem with their user profile.

Open the folder "%localappdata%\Google\Chrome" (it may be different for some people). Rename the "User Data" folder to something else (eg "User Data-old"). Now run Chrome and install an extension then close Chrome (or whatever it is that usually causes the extensions to be lost). See if the extensions are lost. If they are not, then it looks like there is a problem with your user profile (which we’ll have to determine and fix, probably in a different thread). If they are lost, then your user profile is not the problem and we’ll have to continue investigating.

Either way, you can delete the new "User Data" folder and rename the old one back.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? mtf612 5/25/10 12:13 AM
AGAIN. Today it happened when i had multiple tabs open. I abruptly clicked the close button (close all of chrome) and opened chrome no more than 10 seconds later.

My theme was set to default.
My bookmarks were intact but the bar was hidden.
My extensions were deleted but when reinstalled their settings remained.
My chrome settings were set back to default.

This time I am starting over and not restoring my profile.

Chrome version 4.1.249.1064 (45376)

Extensions:
AdBlock - Version: 1.4.29
Google Mail Checker Plus - Version: 1.1.7
iTunes Preview: don't launch iTunes - Version: 1.0
LastPass - Version: 1.68.4
Lazarus: Form Recovery - Version: 0.2.3
One Window - Version: 1.45
Recently Closed Tabs - Version: 1.2.7
Xmarks Bookmarks Sync - Version: 0.7.2

If any of my extensions are likely to blame , Id guess one window. Anyone else experiencing this issue using similar extensions?
As for settings not set to default I have Chrome reopen to the last sessions open tabs.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 5/25/10 11:38 AM
@mtf612, you are using a pretty old version which just barely had extension support (extensions were added to the 4.x branch). Consider upgrading to the latest version (I believe that the latest stable is 5.x, while the latest beta/dev is 6.x).

Also, if Chrome has a bunch of clean-up work to do on shutdown (eg you have a bunch of tabs open and you close the whole thing at once), then it may take a few seconds for it to finish working and flush its changes to files (you can see the Chrome.exe processes in the Task Manager). If you open Chrome again before the last process from the previous session has exited, you may end up corrupting the preferences file, which could be what is causing this issue for a lot of people. Again, make sure you are using the latest version since it has likely be resolved since the 4.x milestone.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? DannyMumbles 5/29/10 11:13 AM
@Synetech, no one wants to do any tests to see whats is causing this issue. Isn't that Google's job to do. I'm tried of "well it could be this, or it could be that".
Why can't we just get an answer and with a fix on this
Synetech and others, look it's great you wanna try to help out in fixing this, but if you don't work for Google then. NO avg issuer is going to do what needs to be done to fix this. and for what, will this fix it all the time
Synetech and others, thanks for helping a few people, but most people, they are shit out of luck, Cus google doesn't like getting calls nor emails...so

I'm just really tried of people who act like they are tech know it alls and say stuff like "i doubt it's that", and im pretty sure."and try this, and this and this and this and this,,,,blah blah blah

Google we need "YOUR" help, were getting know it all's, who make us go in loop holes and tell us stuff that sometimess makes people mess up their computer (well that the users fault but you get what i mean)
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? DannyMumbles 5/29/10 11:22 AM
I am also using chrome 5.0.375.55
I just graduated in computer science and I would not tell people to do half the stuff you did..But that's just me.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 5/29/10 11:58 AM
@DannyMumbles, if you are a computer scientist, then you certainly should be able to understand that Google does not own Chromium and is not responsible to you; it is open-source. Chrome is just the Google-branded derivation of Chromium. That is, Chrome is basically just Chromium with a few Google-specific functions (which for the record, people—people like you in particular I’m guessing—nag about). Therefore if a problem exists in the base code, then it will exist in the derived browsers as well. Have you even considered taking your nags over to the Chromium issue board for support? I doubt it. Why not? Because you figure that Google is rich, and therefore they have paid support staff to address you personally and immediately? Chromium is run by volunteers who are tackling all of the issues (bugs, feature requests, etc.) that users have submitted. I don’t exactly like them, but most of them are decent and working hard on it.

If you had ever looked at the issues in the Chromium board you would have seen that there are issues that the Chromium devs cannot fix because it is in the Apple Webkit code (which is also open-source but administered by a different team. Therefore they have to submit the issue/patch to the Webkit team and wait for them to incorporate it into the trunk so that the next version of Chromium after it has been implemented can also have it. It is the same thing here. Even if Google were to find the problem, they still have to submit it to the Chromium team to add to the Chromium trunk, so it may not show up for some versions. (You’re just using the latest stable version which is still quite a bit behind the latest.)

Maybe if as a computer scientist, you bothered to look at the code, then you may be able to find the problem and submit a patch and be part of the project (and get the adulation that I’m sure you’d desire).

And I really don’t understand your haughty attitude. I’m not a “tech know it alls”. I am a user who has bothered to read through posts (both here and on the Chromium boards), bothered to at least glance at the code, and bothered to do testing. If you had bothered to do anything but nag, you too may have been able to root out things that are not the cause and suggest fixes, but no…

You know why Google can’t do all the testing and fix it for you (aside from it’s not their own, proprietary code)? It’s because on their machines it now works correctly, just like it now works correctly on mine. You have to do tests to help figure out the cause because it’s YOUR system that has the problem. There is some specific configuration on your system that is causing the issue. For each person that still has this problem, there are dozens/hundreds/thousands? of people who are not experiencing it.

I hate it when people say this, but it really does apply: “if you don’t like it, then you can always use something else; nobody’s forcing you to use Chrome/Chromium”.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? DannyMumbles 5/29/10 2:04 PM
i use chrome....i know i see Google's name on chrome, i got it from them,i see ads from Google, copyrights to Google
oh wait are we talking about chrome or Chromium, cus i know the difference. i have used both.
lets back it up
"I'm using chrome 5.0.375.55 " not Chromium
I'm just saying "Google has left us in the dark"
i would think Google would put their name on chrome...it does say copyright... and made possible from Chromium
oh and yeah i kind of thought that being Google and already having tech support issues on the nexus, i would think they would have a better support team...not some pre written help forums.
anyone who has tried email or tried to get help or find a place to talk to Google support team, knows what i mean

last week i signed up for another Gmail account...and found another person's contacts from another gmail account...with names and numbers and address's. So i tried to tell Google about this glitch...........but you know how long it took me to find a place where I could write to them...and i still haven't heard back....
no google number, google email...and the one time i got a word about another problem they said to go to the help center

F the help center

so let me get this straight google chrome is Chromium. with chrome running off of Chromium's code (right)
i don't think ANYONE thought that if they use GOOGLE chrome that they would have to go to the Chromium site to find help.
let's say
If it was Google OS and it had Chromium running as its browser, then yes that would make sense
i don't think you know what i am still trying to say
"i like how you said computer scientist"
i wrote that just for you
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 5/29/10 3:13 PM
Go to Wikipedia and look up Google Chrome. Go to YouTube and watch the introductory Google Chrome videos.

As an Internet company, Google wanted to make web-apps better, but current browsers were making that difficult. Google decided to make a web-app framework in which apps of the future could run as they would on the desktop. So they created the Chrome team to develop the “'browser” (they try to avoid that term because it’s not supposed to be a browser, but rather a framework for running web-apps, hence Chrome OS). The project included not only the framework’s “browser” features, but also a new JavaScript engine (V8). It did not however create its own rendering engine; instead it uses Apple’s open-source Webkit. Soon after, they released it as open-source, renaming the project to Chromium  and spinning off an independent team to develop it. Being open-source, the Chromium code can be used by anyone to create their own browser. For example Maple Studios ChromePlus, SRWare Iron and Comodo Dragon. Google spun off its own customized version of Chromium (which was essentially the same at the time of the split), using the original Chrome name. The primary differences are that Chrome has an auto-update function and some Google-account related ties (which has prompted some people to create tools to remove and/or disable).

When you post an issue here, it is between 1-3 degrees of separation away from the source and the developers:

If it is a Google Chrome specific issue (say for example the auto-update function is not working correctly), then someone on the Chrome team (and presumably Google’s payroll) would look into it and address it and probably have a fix in the next release. (Don't forget that this is free software, ads notwithstanding, so you’re not technically paying for premium support.)

If the devs here determine that the issue is in the Chromium code, then they have to submit it to the Chromium team’s bug-tracker (I’m sure there’s overlap in team members, but still…) I suppose that they /could/ just write a patch and implement the fix in the Chrome code, but that would just be stupid; it would make infinitely more sense to fix it in the base code. Besides, Chromium is built with the latest code several times a day and so is updated much more frequently than Chrome.

Now what happens if the code is in the Webkit code (for example it fails the ACID3 test)? Then the dev here has to pass it on either to the Chromium team, or directly to the Webkit team. Then they have to wait for the patch to make it into the latest Webkit code, and then for that to make it into the latest Chromium code, and then for that to finally be implemented in the latest Chrome version. (Again they /could/ just implement it here, but again that would be outright dumb!)

The point is that open-source software is built of modules by different people. As such it can take a while for a fix to get implemented. It’s not clear exactly what is causing this issue (which seems to be two or three different, but related ones at that). So it takes time to narrow down which piece of code is the culprit (let alone which function, which line, etc.), and time to implement a fix, and time to propagate that fix to the higher levels. (Like I said, you could use Chromium since it is more frequently update, or use Safari which is built by the same people on the Webkit team. The more derived the software, the longer it takes.)

Plus, people have so many different system configurations that there is no way for a dev team to test every one. That means that you *will* have to help out to fix a problem that is only an issue for a subset (and a minority subset from the looks of it), of the users. If you called your ISP’s or TV’s or car’s or whatever’s tech desk for help, would you just describe the problem and hang up, expecting to get a fix? No, you would listen to them and they would guide you through steps to fix the problem. If you went to a doctor with some strange disease that is not common, would you just describe it and expect a shot and leave? No the doctor would run tests to try to figure out what the problem is, and you would have to be a part of that (can’t exactly take an x-ray or administer pills if you’re not there to take them). This is no different. You have a not-exceedingly-common problem, so you have to participate in the fix, not with coding, but with testing your specific system (for example if you are running some AV program, or you messed around with permissions, or you got yourself infected with something, or you installed a game that crashed and corrupted some files, or you… or you… or you…) How are the devs supposed to test these conditions in a lab? They can’t.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 5/29/10 3:19 PM
Dang, I forgot something.

I use (the latest versions of) all five Chromium-based browsers that I mentioned above, using the same user profile (which includes extensions) and have not had this problem for months. Those who are using old versions should update. Those who are using the latest version should try to be specific about what the problem is (how is a dev supposed to know whether the extension’s files are gone, it’s entry is wiped or both? they can’t they don't have access to your computers so you have to detail what you can and report back what the devs ask for).

So yes DannyMumbles, I asked people to do tests and try things because I can’t examine their systems directly. I would love to see how you would do it (assuming you actually do have a better method, you computer scientist you).
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? BlueSword 6/1/10 4:58 AM
For those concerned, I'd suggest trying with a new profile, easily by this:

Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Toni (Googler) 6/3/10 3:57 AM
Hi everyone,

There are a few discussions going on here, so I'm going to summarize and address them in topics below:

Extensions disappearing:

First of all, thanks for reporting that this issue with extensions disappearing is still happening and thanks a lot to Synetech for taking the time to help those affected troubleshoot this! Very much appreciated, you never know when your advice can really help someone out.

As he mentions, we do need to try a number of different tests/troubleshooting steps to figure out what is causing this. There isn't one blanket reason, and multiple root causes can lead to this issue. Something is causing your Preferences file to be locked/unmodifiable/corrupted which prevents Google Chrome from reading your Preferences file and as a result, your extensions get removed. One cause may be that your anti-virus software or some other "privacy protector" program you use is locking the file, so it's important to know this as well.

To help us help you, please see my post marked as 'Best Answer' for the steps you can take to send us the relevant info and the files we need to examine this. The root of the issue lies in how your system's configuration interacts with Google Chrome, and these files allow us to see what is happening on your computer that might've caused this. Thanks!

A few clarifications about Google Chrome vs Chromium:

As mentioned, Google Chrome is a "rebranding" of Chromium that is fit for public consumption. Chromium is the bleeding edge development of the browser and you can think of Chromium as the browser behind Google Chrome. Changes/fixes start at a Chromium build, and eventually these updates make their way to the Google Chrome Dev channel, Beta channel, and then to Stable (which is what the majority of you are using). We have these different release channels because they essentially create a continuous feedback loop that allows us to rapidly develop new ideas into solid product features because we're able to test/refine them with early adopters at these different stages before they get to Stable. You can read more about these different channels in reference 1 below.

With that said, even though changes/fixes always start at Chromium, that's not to say that you shouldn't post your issue here. The information on the Chromium site tends to be more developer centric, so if you're unsure of where to start, this forum is a user-driven community that can help connect you with others. It may lead to conversations about whether or not the issue reported is a known one or if it's even something related to Google Chrome at all, etc. Or if you just want to discuss a feature you like/dislike, this forum serves as an channel to converse with others. We welcome all feedback and opinions here, but let's try to keep it positive when helping each other.

Hope that helps.

Best,

Toni
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? skilledbachelor 6/3/10 5:35 AM
So, in effect, nothing has been done about this problem since the April 22 "Best Answer" appeared.

I don't mind helping you and keeping positive about it, but I'll have to advise my "less expert" friends to remove Google Chrome browser. I've got to keep positive with them too.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? BlueSword 6/3/10 5:51 AM
Have you tried with another profile, as I suggested above?
I have manually deleted data folder and regenerated as described in earlier posts, and I have not observed this issue anymore (but using link above it could be easier..). I don't have the final answer..

Personally I only had that issue a couple of times, with chrome 4. Never with v5 and now v6.
(and as far as antimalware may be concerned I am not using nod32 anymore, as long as it could have been implied as it is discussed about preference file locking).
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? diqiuren 6/3/10 7:27 PM
I had the same problem of all my extensions disappearing but only in "Google Chrome" not in Iron, so it seems google might look outside for answers. I've gone back to Firefox because it works, it does crash but you don't lose everything you set up. Iron has inherent problems too, as does Chrome Plus which is just so slow.

Bare bones Chrome is safe, just like the old days of the first IE.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Toni (Googler) 6/3/10 11:17 PM
@skilledbachelor - Sorry to hear about your frustration. There are a few efforts in progress that are being made to give us more insight about this, but we'll still need some help to fill in the missing gaps since we don't have the same system configuration as you guys.

For those who still encounter this, there are two other things to try that might be easier to do.

1) Look at whether you have a ".bad" version of your Preferences file in your profile, which would indicate corruption. If you have it, please let me know and I'll reach out to you individually for next steps as we'd love to get a copy of it to see what kind of corruption it isYou can find your profile folder at the below locations depending on your OS.

Windows XP: \%YOUR_USERNAME%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
Windows Vista: \%AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

2) Run a diagnostic test for us by following the below instructions:

1. Right click on your Google Chrome shortcut
2. Go to Properties
3. Append “ --diagnostics” two spaces after the ".exe" at the end of the target line (e.g. "...chrome.exe" --diagnostics)
4. Close Google Chrome, re-launch Google Chrome
5. A window appears with a series of tests and results. To copy and paste results to us:
Right-click title bar > Edit > Select All
Then, right-click title bar again > Edit > Copy
Paste the output in this thread.

Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? skilledbachelor 6/5/10 12:00 AM
My version of Windows 7 64-bit has the profile at

%userprofile%\appdata\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

At the moment, my version of Chrome is 5.0.375.55, so it does not contain a .bad file as yet -- hopefully it won't.

Also, I've set the "Under the Hood" options to send crash reports to Google and these will be at

%userprofile%\appdata\AppData\Local\Google\CrashReports

if the creation of the .bad file creates a crash report -- but note my previous replies here about "Under the Hood" options being reset to their defaults when the extensions are deleted.

I'm not frustrated, merely practical. I understand that maintenance is less sexy than development. ;)

No one in google is interested! Imagine what they will be like with their OS problems.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? jeremiah89 6/15/10 7:09 AM
This has happen to me twice now. The first time I just let it go. But this time, I'd like to find out why.

The version of Chrome that I'm running is 5.0.396.0 dev, and it says "Update server not available (error: 3)"

I looked in my profile folder, and I did see a Preferences.bad file, along with a normal Preferences file.

I also ran the diagnostics test, and I have pasted the output below.

I am using Window XP...when I got to properties there is NO security settings at C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome ...very frustrating...at this point will not use Chrome and go back to Firefox...after reading all comments there is NO real answer that works...sadly
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? skilledbachelor 6/27/10 2:29 PM
@Tony(Googler) -

My current version of chrome is 5.0.375.86

I had the indicated failure today at 27/06/2010  03:29 PM EDT.

As noted previously I've set the "Under the Hood" options to send crash reports to Google and this failure caused one to be sent.

If you're still looking at this problem and you can't find this crash output, I can send it to you if you request.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? skilledbachelor 6/27/10 2:51 PM
@Tony(Googler) -

My current version of chrome is 5.0.375.86

After doing something else for a while, I went back into chrome to remove the sending of crash reports from the "Under the Hood" so my saved copy wouldn't be overwritten. I got a window that said that I should shut down chrome and restart it. So I did.

The restarted chrome had recovered all of my extensions!

So maybe this has been solved :-}

I restarted Chrome, I uninstalled and installed did everything...back to Firefox and remember how good it is...also trying Opera and it is very fast...Googlebye
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? 5ifty1 7/6/10 7:14 PM
I'm sorry to be another frustrated Chromer, but I just was trying to migrate to Chrome because it seems to run alot smoother on my machine than any other browser. Sadly, I can't use it as my default browser while having this issue because it just kills everyday use.

I just had this happen 5 minutes ago without closing the browser. The browser did NOT crash and the extension disappeared while trying to use it... lol?

Anyway, was fun, but I'll just use this browser for web dev previewing from now on. Bummed.

Hi Toni - I have a preferences.bad file.

This happens to me all the time - let's say, at least half a dozen times. I haven't been able to pick up a reason.

What I do know, is that my computer was fine yesterday, then we had a power failure last night, while my PC was on. This morning - no extensions.

I run avast Antivirus. I installed Windows 7 about a month ago fresh. Below is the diagnostics. Hope this helps!

Same here.  Works most of the time but once in a few months, all my extensions disappear and I have to reinstall all over.  What a pain in the arse.

Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? mwalsher 9/6/10 3:10 PM
Chrome really needs to avoid deleting all the extensions when it has a problem with the preferences file. What’s worse is that it just blindly deletes everything in the Extensions directory regardless of everything. Maybe it should rename the directory instead of emptying it out.

Even better, Chromium should just divest the preferences from the Extensions and just re-read the contents of the Extensions directory and add them to the preferences file on recovery instead of only on installation, like it does with themes.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? BullFrogz 9/13/10 8:23 AM
This has happened to me about 6 times. Here are some commonalities.

1) I am using Windows 7 Pro 64bit - I have read through this forum and that appears to be a common OS for those encountering this problem.

2) The battery on my laptop does not work and so I am running off the power cord only... sometimes the cord accidently comes unplugged and the computer instantly dies.  Several times when I reload, my extensions are gone.

This just happened to me.

Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? vreelandteodoro 10/24/10 1:52 AM
@Toni (Googler)

Thanks for not stopping by in over 4 months. I'm glad this issue is being resolved in an efficient manner. It has been almost a year since this topic started. I am running Chrome 7 now, and nothing has been done. You guys have run out of excuses. Nothing is being done, and that is a cold hard fact, proven by the existence of this thread.

I think Google needs to stop goofing around with this, collecting random data. As several people have had the power off problem including myself. Sometimes if there is a power outage, or if I manually power down my computer, everything is gone upon restart. Extensions are all gone, and the bookmark bar is gone, but I still have my book marks saved. This is the same thing happening to people that get the BSOD's (probably because they are forced to manually power down).

Now what does this tell you? Obviously this is not the work of some software locking onto my Chrome files.

This is an issue with the way Chrome saves, writes, and backs up data. This is a Chrome issue, not a hardware or outside software issue. You don't need to sit here for another year and collect our data. You need to look at how Chrome handles saving data. What would cause data to corrupt if a users computer suddenly powered off? This can be handled by doing live tests, and examining Chrome's code.

If our computer instantly looses power, that means it has no control over anything. It is dead. It cannot be held responsible for making any actions. Chrome must have some issue that makes it's files corrupt if it is in the middle of performing an action. Examine Chrome's code and the way things are written.

Lastly.. this is the Google Chrome browser. They need to handle mistakes in the software. If my Ford has a faulty drive shaft, I don't hunt down the Chinese part manufacturer. Ford has to handle it.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Kenneth R. Hoefle 11/7/10 3:52 PM
No one has mentioned the unusual appearance of a new home page GOOGLLE.COM WITH TWO 'Ls' as an occurance in the path of the problem though that is my experience as posted about a week ago - October of 2010.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? FellOnEarth 11/19/10 12:45 AM
Same problem here, specifically, I woke my netbook from hibernation and Chrome suddenly lost all extensions (the last tabs used were still open though). I was worried about my bookmarks as well, but they managed to survive the glitch, however the bookmarks bar was hidden and though I might be wrong, I believe that my under the hood settings in options was also reset.  I'm running Win 7 Pro (32bit) with Chrome 7.0.517.42 and only had two extensions installed, AdBlock and the Google Mail notification icon. As I've only just become a Chrome convert (from Firefox), I'm a bit apprehensive of continuing to use it.  I should mention that my computer has also been suffering from hardware caused BSOD issues as well and so it may be related to causing the Chrome extension (which makes having both my crappy computer and a buggy browser doubly lame).  Alas, my computer is under warranty so I can at least take care of my hardware issues, unfortunately, no such support apparently exists for taking care of the software one.  As I said before, LAME!
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? x_shannon 12/4/10 8:25 AM
Has anyone had luck after setting up the sync again? It took forever to go through, but once it did, all of my extensions and preferences are back. Anyone know if the pref file is synced up somewhere?

Maybe the problem is the sync turning off and the pref file getting deleted. Try turning sync back on and see if it helps? It has worked the last 3 times for me.

Why this is happening???????????... Im spending 3 hours now just to find solution on this matter... reading all the comments of solution seekers and all of them were waiting for google responsible personnel to offer any solution, but for how many months or years now, this thread started and untill now, no solution... what the heck!!!!...... all the extensions i have, and the bookmarks were gone... the themes...everything... its like new installed chrome...... Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? gilberto567 1/10/11 9:50 PM
Hi, same problem here, only that for me I didn't even closed Chrome!! Just left my computer on, came back after couple of hours and my bookmarks were gone!! (didn't have extensions).
Chrome version 8.0.552.224.
Win Xp.

Seriously, I don't want to go back to IE or FireFox!!!
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? x_shannon 1/11/11 12:44 AM
@ Gilbert - go into the wrench/tool in the upper right, go to options > personal stuff > set up sync , and log into the sync setting. give it a minute, and the bookmarks/extensions should be back.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? thewebtrainer1 1/11/11 7:38 AM
@opera lover - I hear your pain. This is a web browser. Not some high end web application. If users need to go though the hoops that Google says you need to do to restore your extension and bookmarks, what reason would you want to use Chrome??? Come on...it's a WEB BROWSER!!

And taking almost a year to respond leaves me with only one conclusion: Google is more about "Let see what sticks" business model approach than actually helping users have a better online experience. Sorry to rant here, but the more tools I use with Google, the more I learn they are not as good as they make the hype out to be. Just want useful tools, not hype.

Hope this gets resolved.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? gilberto567 2/6/11 7:43 PM
@x_shannon - I've done that over 10 times now. The online sync is not working at all, I have two computers and have lost all bookmarks and extensions on both of them many times now. I just stopped getting new bookmarks and use firefox once in a while. I don't read this so often, but this is getting quite annoying, I can't believe they haven't found a solution, have they?
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? kackac 2/18/11 8:48 AM
Just happened to me to....all settings, all extensions gone - dozens installed, hours of setup time lost, for no apparent reason.

2nd time now.... COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!

GOOGLE: SORT - THIS - CROCK - OUT!!!

No wonder Chrome's failing to be accepted by business with this sort of reliability and level of support!!!

Very, very unhappy about this......
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? WayneZat 3/7/11 2:05 PM
This is my third time trying chrome and like the prior two times after a few days I'm really not impressed. Extensions appear to come and go for no reason. I've read several fixes and quite frankly there are really too many browsers out there to have to run all types of fixes and special routines to fix the problem. The problem with extensions should not be there to begin with and it's not really the users responsibility to have to fix the basic function of why extensions are lost. I would have thought that Google had the employees to insure that Chrome would be able to run with losing extensions, I guess I'm incorrect on this.

Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 3/30/11 5:45 PM
This seems to happen when Chrome crashes under specific circumstances; the Preferences file gets corrupted, and Chrome is unable to recover it for some reason, so it just renames it and creates a new, empty one. What’s worse, is that in addition to the extensions being lost in-Chrome, if you make the mistake of starting Chrome with the new, empty Preferences file, the stupid thing deletes everything in the Extensions directory, including any modifications or miscellaneous files that were in there, thus wiping them all out. It would be MUCH better if it could detect the extension folders and files in there and rebuild it’s extension database instead (and leave the contents in there alone!)

Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Dodoka 4/15/11 9:42 AM
it just happened to me! Chrome wouldn't even start, so I backup the profile folder, reinstall chrome and copied the files back. All tabs from the previous session opened again, everything is back but all the extensions are gone :(.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Dodoka 4/15/11 11:47 AM
Hello people, good news. I figured out a solution to restore your extentions in Windows 7:
******HERE IS THE SOLUTION!*******

What happened?
-        Chrome somehow lost its extensions, maybe even history and opened tabs from the previous sessions
-        Maybe chrome wouldn’t even start like in my case
What do you want?
-        Make chrome startup again
-        Restore chrome’s state as close as possible
Solution:
Step 1: Reinstall chrome (if it’s not starting up)
-        BEFORE reinstalling chrome: backup the chrome profile folder:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
-        Reinstall chrome
Step 2: Recover all settings except Chrome extensions
-        Copy the backed up profile folder back, replacing existing files and folders
Step 3: Recover chrome extensions
-        In Explorer right-click on the “Extensions” folder and chose “restore previous versions” (or something like this, I have the German version, I don’t know what it is called in the English version)
-        Restore the “Extensions” folder to its newest state before the extensions disappeared. I was lucky to have a version that is only 15 hours old and no new extensions were installed since. (It seems like Windows 7 store 3 latest versions, 3 days between each.)
-        Start chrome and you should find chrome like you remembered it. With history, opened tabs and settings from last session!
Why not just restore the whole chrome profile folder??? (leaving out step 2)
-        Because the latest restorable version of the profile folder might be older then the information from the last session. (For example the latest version of the “Extension” folder is 2 days old, and you want to continue browsing with your 20 opened tabs that you just opened 30 minutes ago)
I hope I could help some of you with this quick walk through! Your chrome should be it old self after just 3 minutes.
Please reply if this works out for you like it does for me.

Good luck!
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? kalpeshbalar 4/20/11 2:44 AM
It started happening to my chrome after I installed 'greplin' extension.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? BullFrogz 4/20/11 7:20 AM
This happened to me for about  six months solid.  At the time my laptop battery was not working and the cord would come unplugged - immediately turning off the device.  I thought that might be what it was, but it did not happen every time.  Since then, I have replaced my battery and for the last 6 months this has not happened a single time.  At least in my situation, I am confident that it was related to the battery issue.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? amhey1 5/6/11 10:44 PM
I am tired of reloading Extensions - when Chrome Crashes it should have a backup file of Extensions so it can reload them if the original file is corrupted.  This can't be that hard to fix!
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? tsrtsrtsr 6/3/11 5:46 PM

what can i do??
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? making_copies 7/9/11 9:01 PM
This just happened to me too on OSX Snow Leopard. Extensions gone except for one and the theme is gone as well. Also, apps don't load either.

I have been so frustrated with Chrome lately that I have gone back to Firefox for the past two months. I keep trying Chrome once and a while hoping that it will get better...and it hasn't yet.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 7/9/11 10:21 PM
@making_copies, thanks for the notice. That it also happens on Mac is useful information that can hopefully help narrow down the problem (it’s obviously the way that Chrome handles extensions; not an OS related issue).
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? YoPakistan 7/31/11 12:33 AM
The Best Way to solve problem like this is to Sync your Data with Google Account...
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Beer Gaucho 10/5/11 8:18 AM
Wow, it's been about two years since this problem was first reported.  It just happened to me, too.
I use Chrome for work... this is extremely inconvenient.  I loved Chrome and raved about it for a long time but, now, reluctantly, am going back to using Firefox with extensions.  I'm so bummed about having to do that but Google leaves me no choice if a problem like this is allowed to fester for so long.  I can't afford to waste so much time and productivity.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Maduke 10/12/11 8:35 AM
I am not a techie so can someone please explain in SIMPLE ENGLISH how I can keep my preferences. I change my homepage etc and everytime I close chrome and come back on, my settings are gone. thanks
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 10/12/11 1:29 PM
@Maduke, if your version of Chrome is new enough (it should be), and you have a Google account (you can register one if you don’t); then you can use “Sync”.

  1. Click the Wrench menu
  2. Select Options
  3. In the Personal Stuff tab, click on “Set up sync...”
  4. Sign into your Google account.

Now your preferences, bookmarks, history, etc. will be uploaded to Google’s servers so that you can access them if you install a fresh copy of Chrome on a new computer or some such.

Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Maduke 10/12/11 3:31 PM
Synetech; you are brilliant. Now I just closed Chrome, reopened it, and it was back to basic Chrome...have to sync everytime.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Synetech 10/12/11 4:10 PM
@Maduke, you shouldn’t have to; it checks to see if anything has changed since the last sync or not. I just tried setting up sync and nothing changed when I restarted it. What do you mean by “basic Chrome”?

Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? Maduke 10/14/11 5:53 AM
I just meant Chromes homepage you get when you first install. I tried to create a new profile but system would not allow me to change the name of the old one as someone suggested. Said it was open elsewhere and it wasn't. I give up. I just change it everytime I open, after I sign in to Google.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? AdrianP 10/20/11 3:11 AM
I have removed the Read-Only, Hidden, and System flags from the Properties file, and that solved my problem, the installed extensions are still there after restarting Chrome.

One way to do it, is from the command line. CD to the folder containing the Preferences file (drive:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Preferences for WinXP) and run this: attrib /S -R -S -H Preferences

@Toni: I would like to know however why this solves the problem, and which of these flags were the problem. And also, why were they set originally, any ideas? Thanks!!
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? buddymedbery 11/18/11 3:41 AM
This happens repeatedly with Chrome on a Mac, using latest OS X and latest Chrome, with sync on. This can't be that hard. Why can't they fix this? I am moving on to another browser if I continually have to install extensions.
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? holochl 11/27/11 7:49 PM
I have Chrome 15.0.874.121 installed on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit with Service Pack 1.  I have a newer PC.  It runs well with no BSOD issues, no system crashes, no power failures.   I was a Firefox user but recently decided to give Chrome a serious trial.  I configured sync, added a few extensions, customized the options but I kept losing all my extensions and tabs whenever I closed Chrome.  Very frustrating.  I followed advice posted by AdrianP and removed the Readonly, Hidden and System flags from the Properties file and Chrome is now working as expected.

Open a command line window
cd \Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
Re: When I close Chrome all my installed Extensions disappear? OBJimG 1/3/12 10:31 AM
Chrome version: 16.0.912.63 m, Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit w/ SP1

Followed AdriaP and holochl's resolution and it has resolved my issue.

Open a command line window
cd \Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
attrib /S -R -S -H Preferences

Furthermore, I did not have this issue on Chromium for Ubuntu 11.10

I started having this bullcrap few weeks ago. The only difference is that chrome decided to delete only my speed dial extensions(how weird is that right?). No matter which ones - ive tried them all. And it seems that it will delete these randomly as well. Sometimes it takes days, sometimes only few hours. It will not happen when i close or restart my chrome though, nor it has no affect when i restart my computer.
im afraid that my chrome became self aware :D
any suggestions?

Just happened to me, and is not even remotely acceptable. Chrome uninstalled, and will never, ever have the opportunity to convince me again.

I thought Google hired decent programmers. Guess not.

Windows XP user here. I force-closed Google Chrome for some silly reason and lost my preferences and extensions, but I was able to get my extensions and preferences back by getting rid of the most current "Local State" and "Preferences" files and replacing them with the back-up *.tmp versions from previous days. After doing that, everything was back to normal.

I recommend first backing up your originals AND your *.tmp files just in case anything happens, though.
