I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome waldo1748 11/8/11 10:32 PM
I have the latest version of Google Chrome on notebook running Windows 7 .Apps and extensions will not install , they just download as a .crx file which I cannot open. Any suggestions or solutions will be appreciated. TIA
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome Stefan vd 11/9/11 2:20 AM
Test this
Drag the CRX file in the omnibar (url+search bar) and click on install.
If the same, try to create a new chrome profile, but backup first you bookmarks.

I have the exact same problem and I tried the above mentioned suggestion without any luck. Any one knows what to do?
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome Stefan vd 11/9/11 11:42 AM
Do you use the latest Google Chrome version? and not Google Chrome usb version.
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome waldo1748 11/9/11 12:37 PM
I tried  Stefan vd suggestion and it did not work. My version of google Chrome is the latest version , which  is 15.0.874.106
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome Stefan vd 11/9/11 1:02 PM
Have you set Google Chrome as default browser. And then download a Chrome extension.
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome waldo1748 11/9/11 1:24 PM
Google chrome is my default browser, still no luck installing extensions
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome Stefan vd 11/9/11 2:04 PM

Is this what Google calls support?
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome Fernando Loizides 12/14/11 1:18 AM
I had the same problem. Go to options (wrench icon) -> About Google Chrome and it will check for an update. If you update and restart chrome this did it for me.

What version do you use?
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome Luis A. Florit 12/31/11 11:57 AM
Same problem here, with version 16.0.912.63 for Fedora 15.
Cannot install extensions or themes.
When trying to install an extension, it stays in "checking..." forever.
I tried deleting the whole ~/.config/google-chrome/ directory AND reinstalling Chrome without luck.

Same problem, version 16.0.912.63, Debian 6.
This happened after that I closed an existing extension by Task Manager.
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome Stefan vd 1/2/12 2:58 AM
Try to change the "download folder" to a other location:
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome SawVI 1/2/12 4:21 AM
change download folder - not work
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome chiamo 1/2/12 12:15 PM
Same problem here and no way of getting extensions to show on the bar nor get "supposedly" downloaded extensions to work.  Had to set up Mozilla/Firefox as another browser with its extensions that do work.

There is no way I am going to keep 2 browsers and I do use the extensions quite a bit.  I like Chrome's speed, but if we cannot find solution to extension issue, I am going somewhere else.
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome SawVI 1/3/12 10:00 AM
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I got a solution that works (for me) in google-chrome, linux:

step 1 - Create a Google Chrome link in your Desktop (just drag-and-drop the Google Chrome icon located at Menu > Applications > Internet in
your Desktop);

step 2 - Open a terminal and:

           user@host:~$ cd ~/Desktop/
           user@host:~/Desktop$ sudo su
           user@host:/home/user/Desktop# nano google-chrome.desktop

step 3 - After open the google-chrome.desktop file with nano (or other text editor), look for this line:

           Exec=/opt/google/chrome/google-chrome %U

           and change to the following:

           Exec=/opt/google/chrome/google-chrome %U --enable-extensions

step 4 - Close the file and exit terminal.

Now I hope that you are able to install extensions.

Hi everyone,

Our engineers have been reviewing this issue for the past couple of weeks and recently issued a workaround. This issue may have to do with the Downloads folder, so as @Stefan vd suggested, you can try to change the download location, but if that doesn't work, try installing Google Chrome on a machine that doesn't already have a Downloads folder (or delete the existing folder), then try installing the item from the Chrome Web Store.

Reply to this thread if you're still having issues, and I'm happy to look into it further!

Happy new year,
Arneil

So here it is!

Create a folder in My Documents, name it Downloads!

And it will work!

Here is a simple MS-Windows solution:
1. Download the *.crx (Chrome Extender File) and click it on the downloads bar at the bottom of the screen.
2. Select "Select a program from a list of installed programs" option.
3. Select "Browse..."
4. Clear the address bar and type %LOCALAPPDATA%.
5. Find Google and double-click it.
6. Find Chrome and double-click it.
7. Find Application and double-click it.
8. Find chrome.exe and double-click it.
9. Click OK.
10. Chrome should now ask you if you want to install the app/extension/theme.
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome Rockstar33 2/5/12 4:07 PM
You should reinstall google chrome, then clear the history by going to options, then try installing the apps and extensions, if it still doesn't come out or show it, try going to options and extensions, u have to enable the app or extensions sometimes
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome wclint 2/6/12 11:13 AM
Running Beta Version:  18.0.1025.3 and cannot install extensions nor themes. Same problem with earlier versions.
When I click on "Add" in the Chrome Store, I get the error msg, "Could_not_get_temp_directory" and then the download disappears from the download bar at the bottom. However, did find extension crx files in Documents and Settings, User, Local Settings, Google, Chrome, Application, 18.01025.3. Clicking on the crx file brings up the same error msg. Have tried every suggestion above with no improvement. Are you really working on this issue?

Try to change the 'download location' to a other path, and restart browser.

Same problem.  Reinstalled, moved download directory, associated Chrome with *.crx, nothing fixes it.

Running 18.0.1025.11 beta-m

This response was posted by Ameil on 1/3/12. It does not work for me or others! If Chrome's engineers have been working on this problem for 2 or so weeks prior to then ... and still do not have a solution; then, I must ask why they are still employed and where did they get their training. I believe that Ameil's answer is pure BS and that no one is working on nor cares about solving this problem. Very few individuals know about or post to these forums. The numbers who have posted who have this problem indicate to me that the problem is widespread. Does Google simply not care?

I have tried every single suggested solution posted in this forum, some numerous times, with absolutely NO effect. Have uninstalled and reinstalled so many times that I have lost track, beta and so-called stable versions. Done the download folders thing; all the crazy ideas posted above and no results. Have even downloaded AND INSTALLED the greasemonkey extension for MAC, because someone said it solved the problem. Only different result was that the extension did install (from a non-Google site).

I am contemplating going to other, non-google sites looking for an answer ... and at least letting a wider audience know of this major problem with Chrome and it's engineer's refusal to address it. I want a solution now ... or to hell with chrome!
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome wclint 2/17/12 7:36 AM
running beta 19.0.1041.0  on WinXP3 machine with all updates installed.
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome markthesharkk 3/1/12 6:42 AM
This is what worked for me.

I noticed that my "downloads" folder was different or didn't exist anymore.  So I went into the "wrench" "options" "under the hood" and then where it says "downloads" I changed the location.  That worked and now I can install all extensions and apps

Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome XfrugooX 8/5/12 2:49 PM
I am using HostsMan, which is a freeware application that lets you manage your Hosts file by adding lists of domains to block. I had this problem for a long time but randomly, I disabled the program (so the program stopped to block domains) then I tried to install an extension and it worked, it fixed the problem. I think that this program was blocking a domain related to the Chrome Web Store every time I tried to install an extension. That's how the download of the .crx file was impossible for me and why it was stuck at "Checking...". I can't figure out which domain caused this because my HostsMan have 127 077 listed domains to block.

That's how I'm now able to install extensions! :)

had the same problem. Acually when searching for a solution I got here and needed to login with my Google account. After that I could read this thread AND install extensions again...
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome Jovan Van Straaten 1/1/13 7:42 AM
Just wanted to let you know this worked for me first time. I had set the default downloads folder to a portable drive which was no longer connected. PS - Did this after doing latest update also, but I don't think this was critical. JvS
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome Zebishop 1/2/13 4:26 AM
I tried everything else listed here and elsewhere and logging into chrome (when you're on a blank page, on the upper right corner) allowed me then to install extension.
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome Isaac Kurtz 1/3/13 2:54 AM
Version 23.0.1271.97 m

Been having the same issues as everyone. No amount of fiddling with the download folder would work.

What did work was to sign out/disconnect then back in with the same account.

Couple days ago chrome deleted all my extensions for no reason and so I tried re-downloading them, but the wouldn't seem to want to so I uninstalled Chrome and Installed it again and I got the same crx error you all are getting. I also tried every solution on here, but none of them worked. Only by trying different things was I able to fix it. In your download folder where Chrome's installer was placed (your download folder is where almost everything that is downloaded is place by default) are the files of the extensions you one had and I had many copies of them. After deleting them all, I was able to re-install extensions again.
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome Dave Hutchison 1/10/13 8:39 PM
Same problem here with latest version update.  Spent 3 hours trying all solutions and none work.

Like someone last year said, the "changes" button stays on forever when adding extension or theme.   Something flashes on the bottom of screen assume download but does so fast I can't read it.

The crx files are in my download directory.  But stuck trying to figure out what to do with them, double click just brings up box cannot find how to open the extension thing.

Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome Juderino 1/13/13 1:44 PM
Although I was signed in on chrome, when I went to download via the Chrome Web Store I was signed out there. Signing in again solved the problem for me.
Re: I cannot install Google Apps or Extensions on Chrome TRozok21 1/14/13 12:32 PM
I've tried downloading some extensions, but for some reason on my downloads bar it's saying "virus detected" on the extension downloads and the extensions page says error detected etc etc. I've tried moving the location where the downloads are supposed to go, but that hasn't helped me really

Thingy Google Chrome browser update to latest version helped me to get rid of that problem. I suggest to make brows update and browser restart.

Make sure you are signed in. If you are not signed in, it won't work. (But doesn't tell you why, which is dumb.)

Can confirm that signing in solves the problem (Version 23.0.1271.97 Ubuntu 12.04).

I was having this problem and then discovered that though it appeared as though I was logged in, I actually wasn't. When I officially logged in, the problem went away.
