|Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||RickOH09||9/18/09 11:15 AM|
Google chrome won't open any pages.
I have installed this on many computers. This one computer (fairly new Gateway) installed fine, but brings up a blank page. No links or web pages come up.
I have checked proxy and Firewall.

I've been having the same issue. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it several times, but there was no change. I used Chrome for awhile until this issue began, now I'm stuck with Firefox.
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||harryt1||9/28/09 12:43 PM|
I thought I would find an answer here but apparantly not.It opens to a blank page. I tried unstalling and installing twice.
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||Ronb22||11/16/09 5:02 AM|
Same thing here. Just blank pages. Doesn't seem to even try to access web. New tabs show immediately blank with "about:blank" label. Bookmarks don't work, nor do any attempts to type in url.
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||No♠Fear||11/23/09 1:27 PM|
Same problem here.. Chrome worked fine in the beginning, but now all of a sudden nothing shows up... (I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times over several months and its not blocked by any firewall) any help would be awesome and loved Chrome while it was working..
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||sac.hel||12/1/09 12:06 AM|
try this ,after reinstallig it show a box saying"do you want to set google as you default search engine" click on change it will show dialogue box for Google chrome option at the basic>home page>check on the new tab page. and close,instantly your Google chrome will show tab with 8 boxes.
it works for me after i was getting sick of using Mozilla.
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||ruz||12/22/09 5:08 AM|
Same symptoms. Think it was due to a virus in my case.
* start Chrome
* it opens and displays a tab about:blank
* the tab is always in Loading state, i.e. there's a rotating circle icon to the left of the tab caption "Loading..."; the default "New tab" does not appear
* same if I open other tabs, i.e. they are blank and always "Loading..."; it seems as if it couldn't get the page content, or the rendering engine failed to render it
* if I type words in the address bar, it shows suggestions, so the connectivity to Internet is working
* tried to clean temporary files, except for cookies and form data
* tried reinstalling, updating via the About Google Chrome menu command, and restaring Windows
* initially, after rebooting it sometimes started working, but now it just never works
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||ruz||12/22/09 5:12 AM|
Correction to the above reply: if I open new tabs and navigate to a URL by typing it or clicking on a bookmark, nothing happens, it doesn't even change to "Loading..." state, it's just always "New tab"

I am having the same issue after a malware attack. I just get a message that the page is unavailable. The webpage at http://www.foxnews.com/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||Diskette66||12/30/09 5:58 AM|
This problem suddenly struck me on 12/28/09. Everything was fine and all of a sudden, all of my Chrome pages were timing out, went blank and I had to end-task out of about 15 instance of Chrome. No matter what I tried (for hours), I couldn't get anything but blank pages. Internet Explorer was working fine. I downloaded Opera and that was fine. Then I realized (through system restore) that Windows Update had downloaded and installed an automatic update at the exact moment everything went wrong. It was an update for Windows Defender - released on 12/28/09. Once I rolled back my system to a restore point just prior to that update being installed, I was fine. I immediately had to change my Windows Update settings to "recommend but let me choose what to install only". Does anyone else find it curious that not only does the Microsoft Windows Update site refuse service to you entirely if you browse there using Google Chrome, but also that a Windows Update entirely renders the product unusable. By the way, the update in question states that once installed, it CANNOT be removed. Sounds like Microsoft trying to sabotage the competition if you ask me.
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||RazziC||1/5/10 5:49 PM|
The above solution worked for me. I made a system restore to the 28th of December (I am not sure if this was the exact date the problem arose but right around that time at least) and disabled the automatic Windows Update. There was a couple of updates that popped up immediatly that I dismissed and everything seems to work fine now. Certainly looks like that specific Windows Update was the problem to me. System restore and disabling the automatic Windows Update worked for me.

|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||ASC12345||3/19/10 7:54 AM|
Same problem here... I don't have a good restore point, but there was a windows update right around the time when it stopped working. Does anyone have any solutions?
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||BbErSeRkK||5/5/10 5:34 PM|
I had this problem, it turned out to be a nasty rootkit trying to steal passwords. It tries to inject itself into chrome but chrome blocks it hence the blank pages.
My regular anti-virus did not pick up this rootkit, i tried a few different ones and needed to follow help off of a forum to completely remove it.
If you are having this issue, try the prevx online scanner or other/multiple online virus/malware scanners,
If you have been compromised change all your e-mail/banking passwords from a clean computer!
btw doing a system restore might take you back before the malware/rootkit
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||Glens007||5/19/10 5:01 AM|
I came across the same problem.
I clicked on a bad internet link that installed Spyware/Malware on my system that started off crippling all browsers and disabled Chrome from displaying any web pages. Just get the loading message on the browser tab in chrome.
Un-install Google Chrome
Install Malwarebytes free version
Personally I think Malwarebytes is one of the better spyware/malware removers but still might not catch everything.
This removed 908% of my issues but browsers still didn't work
Found that in IE properties that Google also points to the Proxy was changed and needed to be manually changed back.
Click on Tools
Click on Internet Options
Click on Connections Tab
Click on Lan Settings button
If you don't use a proxy un-check it and select automatically detect settings.
If you do use a proxy make sure the settings are correct.
In Google Chrome
Click on the wrench for Google Chrome Options
Click on Options from drop down
Select Under the Hood
click on Change Proxy settings
In new window click connections.
Click on Lan Settings button
If you don't use a proxy un-check it and select automatically detect settings.
If you do use a proxy make sure the settings are correct.
This fixed IE so I could now brows but after installing Google Chrome still did not function so I uninstalled it again.
Found that I still had a Browser Hijacker installed though that re-directed my search results while browsing using IE.
Next I Installed ComboFix
(Note that this is a 32 bit program and will not run on a 64 bit OS, you might be able to run it in compatibility mode but I cannot confirm it will work)
This is the 2nd best spyware removal tool I also highly recommend and is also free.
When running this it might prompt you to install windows recovery if it is not already installed on your system. It will let you continue without doing the install of the Microsoft program but I do not recommend it. This allows you to roll back your system if needed if the repair for some odd reason goes wrong. I have used this program more times than I can count and have never had a problem with it.
Ran this and it discovered a rootkit that was installed on my system.
Once it discovered the root kit it restarts your system and continues the removal on restarting. Once you log back in it continues cleaning the system.
After Combofix finished I re-installed Google Chrome and it was fully functional again.
I hope this helps
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||Glens007||5/19/10 8:23 AM|
Sorry I forgot to mention that on the Combofix download page make sure you read before clicking on the link.
The green download button is not for combofix but for Reimage software.
Under the green button you will see the section labled Download Combofix for free
In that section you will see in txt Link1:combofix.exe that is a hyperlink to download it.
Just wanted to mention this to avoid any confusion.

i had the same problem but it is solved now am talking about blank pages occur while trying to connect to a website it will be as the following try to get into the folder of Google chrome on you system try to enter the folder through the following pass "C:\Users\[YOUR USER ACCOUNT]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" then try to change the exe name to anything u like maybe chrome.exe to me.exe as u like ...it will work fine
there is another solution but it lake of security it will be as the following make a shortcut for chrome on ur desktop then bring the properties by clicking right click on the shortcut so shortcut name will appear in front of u just add after "exe" "space-no-sandbox" space i meant press space not space as a word :) i hope this help
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||wanyancan.Bai||10/29/10 5:07 AM|
If you tried everything,
if it doesn't open any pages, even "about:version",
even when you used Ghost to restore to an old system state,
and even worse if, there's no viruses reported by most antivirus,
then most likely you're affected by a MBR virus or corrupted driver modules (those files in %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys), which are also called 'rootkit' virus that have stealth code inside.
Try to use 'mbrcheck.exe' or 'RKUnhooker.exe' to scan them.
I've just solved this problem recently, and easily fixed the problem by using windows 7 recovery CD to boot and run 'bootrec /fixMBR' and/or replace the corrupted driver files. Hope your windows is not as sick as this yet.. Good luck.
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||sasin9||11/11/10 7:18 PM|
The fix for this problem with chrome in windows 7 is as follows:
I noticed that if you rename this file
(the xxx... on mine is "44891707")
Upon starting Chrome, after the rename, it will create a fresh file with the original name, and your loading problems are over.
Note: You can also just delete the file, but i renamed in order to save the original incase something went wrong.
Worked for me, first time Ive published, so let me know how it works for you. Im sure there is an equivalent XP and vista fix... right?
I got tired of the -no sandbox solution that wasnt even really a solution
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||noekidotcom||11/13/10 11:09 AM|
I had the same problem together with some other problems in other browsers (could not see flash).
I even had problems with the regional language configuration (coud not type most of Spanish extended characters).
Chrome worked well if no sandbox was specified, but with warnings, and it worked if windows 98 compatibility was set (???)
But these fixes were not obviously a way to go...
After trying almost everything described here, I used a good trojan remover, and... it was ok after that.
So please verify your system is super-clean!!

HERE IS THE SOLUTION: Delete the cache.
1. Click the wrench icon in the upper right corner of Google Chrome.
3. Select the "Under the Hood" tab.
4. Clear browsing data
5. Select the "Empty the cache" check-box and uncheck the others (unless you want to remove that stuff too).
5. Click "Clear browsing data"

|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||SadAboutChrome||10/9/11 4:02 PM|
What a disappointment. I thoroughly researched Chrome, was excited about downloading it and....nothing... blank pages, nothing will load and all the advice to make setting changes in Chrome require Chrome to load pages. I can't change settings if the pages won't load. I realized its free but some actual Google help would be nice, not all of us our computer savvy - we just expect if its billed as the next best thing since sliced bread that it actually work without having to sink elbow deep into trying reprogram the computer. And to be honest I'm not interested in blindly trying to fix Chrome, if it won't download and work its gone and I'll go with what works.
On the plus side IE has never run so fast, its the browser I'm using now to type this comment. Thanks Google for trying, perhaps you'll get it right in the future for those of us that aren't computer techs. Such a pity.

I may have found a fix, although I am sure there may be different issues causing the same problem for different people.
What I did was open a New Tab, go into Settings, and instead of checking the box that says "On Startup: Open New Tab", I selected "Open Specific Page: Use Current".
It should say "chrome-internal://newtab/"
My Chrome now opens to my New Tab page with all my extensions there. Hope this helps.

Try if chrome works in incognito mode with Ctrl+shift+N , if so one or more extensions or apps aren't working properly. Disable them one after a time and see if the page will load.
It worked for me. Fast save extension did it.

Now works fine. Hope this helps a little.

|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||Tim Mensch||3/13/13 3:59 PM|
I similarly have a problem where Chrome won't open any web pages. Not even local web pages on this computer.
All extensions are disabled.
I've uninstalled an reinstalled Chrome, nuking its settings folder while it was uninstalled so it doesn't remember anything from an earlier install. No good.
I tried disabling the firewall; no good.
I tried scanning for malware (Malwarebytes, GMER, Avira scan) and found nothing.
I use Avira Internet Security. There may be some conflict; I tried disabling Avira, but it didn't help. Uninstalling Avira might fix the problem, but in that case I'd say it's Chrome's problem since nothing else I run HAS a problem.
I'm running Windows 7 x64. I also saw a similar behavior that was described in another message, where uninstalling and reinstalling FIXED the problem temporarily, but then it failed again.
My theory is that a Chrome update killed it for me, for whatever reason. The intermediate install that "fixed" things was an older version of Chrome (without that patch) that eventually patched itself. Now the current Chrome installer has the newest version, and it doesn't run.
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||sgfxokc||3/25/13 8:37 AM|
Simple solution to this .. No reloading of chrome needed.
close all chrome files (my need to go to task manager to be sure nothing with "chrome" is still running)
In Windows 7 file explorer, type %AppData% to get to windows app data folder.
delete or rename default folder.
now reopen chrome and you should see a clean chrome page.
all your setting, apps, etc.. will reload.
do this for each profile you use.
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||Katnip173||4/2/13 4:26 AM|
I woke up this morning to find this exact problem.
When I click the Google Chrome icon, a new tab opens up and instead of showing my new tab picture, it shows a blank light blue screen. It says "Untitled" at the top. I click on a bookmark and the URL shows up at the top of the page, but it doesn't even load. I've tried many of the above solutions, but Chrome won't load the extensions or anything. But, obviously, Internet Explorer works just fine.
Being a user of Chrome, I am really ticked at this...

|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||gmailuser24||5/22/13 7:14 PM|
I'm having a similar problem intermittently and it seems the only way around it is to keep rebooting the pc and resetting the modem.
Not running any extensions, and am using WinXP and Google Chrome.
Today, after visiting any single website, then leaving it and trying to go into another site, it comes up with one of those pages telling me the site is unavailable to try 'reloading', which of course doesn't work - not even to bring up a blank google page (the same error arises). It would seem that today is a 'visit one site only' day.
It was an IT friend who suggested rebooting everything and trying again, but frankly, that gets a little annoying after the umpteenth time.
As mentioned, this is an intermittent problem, not a regular, daily thing.
|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||Michael MGAC||6/10/13 8:17 AM|
I am having precisely the same problem. I can open ONE tab...multiple tabs simply won't load and show blank pages. This started in March of 2013. In addition, when I close Chrome after having this issue happen...it won't restart for several seconds. What I mean is, I click on the Chrome icon...and nothing happens.
It is not an 'extensions' problem.
I have performed every single 'solution' posted in this thread and none of them have worked.
This is a Google Chrome botched up coding problem. Chrome is defective.
I have the latest version (27.0.1453.110 m) and I'm using Windows Home Vista Premium. Until March of this year, I have not had any problems to speak of with Chrome.
Until Google comes up with something new, I'll be switching back to Firefox.

|Re: Chrome won't open any pages, blank pages||Lotus Lim||7/25/13 8:54 PM|
I've experienced the same issue with Chrome and Firefox displaying blank pages except IE. Thought I'd help some folks here since I've struggled with this for nearly a month. Side note: IE though was stuck "Running virus scan" preventing ANY downloads - this got resolved by rolling back the last updates.
I've successfully disinfected my machine in the past - pretty much anything the "$%@#" who have nothing better to do with their life can come up with. Guess the rootkit got a hold of my machine this time because none of the best tools worked. I was able to fix it by painfully cleaning the windows registry momentarily - the fix lasted only a few hours.
Malware Bytes, TDSKiller, McAfee, adwcleaner didn't work for me either.
Now on to how I fixed this (fingers crossed, knock on wood, hope it sticks). I ran "aswMBR" available here:
First uninstall Chrome and Firefox, then run aswmbr.exe.
One important thing to note is, I bypassed "Fix MBR". This writes to the master boot record which is extremely risky. DO NOT run "Fix MBR" unless you can take the risk (a freshly formatted disk should be okay). If you want to take the risk anyway, be sure to back up all your personal files (and scan it for virus).
What I did instead was located and manually deleted the infected files - they are highlighted in red at the end of the scan. This may mess up some of your drivers (files with .dll extensions) because that is what rootkits do. But hey, it's infected anyway, so what have I got to lose? I can always re-install it.
After you manually delete the files highlighted in red, be sure to clean your "Recycle Bin" to completely get rid of it.
Hope this helps (and still praying).

It first started when I had opened back up my computer with chrome still open. It was frozen and I couldn't reload anything. It was about a day after I added sketch up to my computer. I have tried restarting and downloading several times. I have a windows 8 so some of these solutions are rather hard for me to attempts.

i am having the same issue, chrome is installed fine and running on my account on all 10 -12 of my other systems , just not my main system. is there a fix or patch for this? i have uninstalled chrome and re installed several times, but it seems to stick a couple of days after re install with the same issue. no ability to type in the url bar, blank white screen just the folder border and some of my bookmarks are showing. i can get to chrome with Firefox but that is the only way?

Worked as a breeze for me. Thanks.
I had to pull up the Windows task manager first and kill all chrome processes first, though.

Yes, that's my case too. I'm going to post a question about this separately.

If you believe this to be an extension issue, then YOU would presumably know which extension is causing the problem. Clearly you are just taking a stab in the dark.

That doesn't work for me, as nothing at all happens when I hit "settings" or anything else, for that matter, on the Chrome window. All I get is "untitled". This just happened about two weeks ago, right after a Windows update.

I had the same problem Chrome did not display any pages, settings page included. I solved this by changing user rights: right click on the Chrome shortcut - properties - security tab. Give the user (yourself) full access rights.
Now Chrome opens pages again.

I found a solution that worked for me. Apparantly the compability setting was set to Win XP SP2, and I am running Win7. I think Chrome did this in an update.
Anyway, check you compability settings by right-clicking the Chrome shortcut, properties, then click the Compability tab. Uncheck "run in compability mode" and click OK. If compability mode already is unchecked, try running it with whatever OS you are using.
Hope this helps.

This worked for me ... mine was set to Windows 2003 compatibility mode. Thank you!
