|Chrome hangs while loading webpages||jiffyclub||4/5/10 10:58 AM|
Chrome very frequently hangs while loading pages. By "hang" I mean that Chrome displays a blank page or the page I am trying to leave though Chrome itself remains responsive: I can close and open tabs, stop loading, etc. I describe it as Chrome "forgetting" what it was doing and totally failing to load the page.
My usual solution is to hit reload or click the link again and a couple of tries usually does the trick and whatever page I'm trying to load shows up instantly. I've tried turning on/off various preferences with no affect. This problem seems to occur randomly and there are no pages that hang consistently.
Interestingly, this occurs only on my work computer. At home I use Chrome on my laptop and have never experienced this issue. The major differences are that my laptop is running Mac OS 10.6 on a wireless network and is not accessing the internet through whatever servers and firewalls my organization has in place. However, I've never experienced this problem at work while surfing the web using Firefox or Safari so I can't solely blame my organization's infrastructure.

I also have hang problems om Mac OS 10.6 in Chrome 5 - I brought a PC to work also with Chrome 5 to make sure it was not network problems and I must say - 5-8 times pr. hour I get strange stalls problems, where chrome is loading forever (loading animations is in tabs like "forever" => waited up to 30 min. just as a test - and the only solutions is to keep reloading the page until is move on - this happens also in Gmail, Google Docs, AdWords, Analytic and a reload is not always great if I am making a post or part of a buy process
The problems (summary)
- are not on my PC Chrome - PC Chrome never hangs or keeps loading "forever"?
- seems random - I can not spot a pattern in the error - on website levels - it can basically happend on every website I browse?
- I do most of my work in a browser and even though 5-8 times pr. hour does not seem much - well it breaks my focus on my task
- started about 2-3 months ago - but I thought it was network problems until 1 week ago and I started to do tests
- only Mac OS Chrome (current version: 5.0.342.9 beta)
- I do not have the problem in Safari or Firefox 3.6 on the same Mac (when them for hours in a row)?
I love Chrome 5 - Please help me :-)

I have this issue too! It will start to happen on every time until it gets to the point where I switch to Safari for the rest of the day. I'm running a Macbook with Mac OS 10.6.4.

Just to let you know this thing is happening with me, don't give me wrong I tried "kerz" 's solution and many more but it's still the same. It's not freezing like for 30 sec or so it doesn't load nothing just keep loading on everything: on sites, on history, on bookmarks manager etc. I cleaned every single file left from Chrome and tried to reinstall it but zero success , the same story all over again. And btw I'm not on Mac I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x32. I just had to switch back to Firefox but it's not the same so if someone has a solution to this problem I would be very grateful. :)
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||dnlstk||7/13/10 3:37 PM|
This exact same thing is happening to me, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome and I still get the same problem. I am on Windows 7 and about 50% of the time Chrome works fine, then the other 50% it goes to load a page and either only loads part of it or it "loads" a completely blank screen. Hitting refresh a couple times fixes it and loads the page correctly.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||jesstra||8/11/10 12:28 AM|
I've been having exactly the same problem... win7 x64.
Typically I would have 5 or 6 tabs open, browsing happily, and then Chrome hangs (or at least the pages don't load even though Chrome is still responsive). The only solution I have found is to choose and copy one link to the clipboard, and close Chrome completely. Upon immediately re-opening Chrome I can paste that one link back in and typically it will load instantly.
Worth noting that I've had this problem on-off for a few months now, and it is only recently that is seems to be getting worse?
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||solja32||8/24/10 11:09 AM|
Got the same problem, pages don't load properly, I have to reload pages again and again until they show up properly, the problem started randomly! Chrome is Update.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||verdy_p||8/31/10 5:18 AM|
This is interestingly highyl related to a similar but in Windows with the same symptoms (but in Windows it is critical and reported many times, because not only it freezes the current tab, but it also causes ALL other tabs to be freezed. Chrome on MacOS is also structured with multiple processes communicating with each other (I don't know the details, but there's some way for a process, such a renderer, to get access to a UI ressource created and owned by another process, such as a window or tab.
However, for some unknown reason, one of these process is failing to get access to these UI ressources that it does not own, or fails to control it and communicate with the other process (notably the core process owning the main UI and tabs. It is also interesting to note that when Chrome hangs, generally it also hangs in all other tabs that are open in the same domain (even if they were inactive and displaying a static page that was already fully rendered.
Chrome has sever problems in synchronizing its processes, so that promiss advertized by Google that "all processses in Chrome are independant" is simply FALSE: yes if one process crashes *and* dies, the other processes will be able to continue normally, but as long as a process is not "officially" dead (i.e. did not crash with a system-generated exception) it will still severely affect the other concurrent processes (including other processes run by the user but completely unrelated to the browser, such as the desktop shell or system menus and task bars) because Chrome fails to communicate only with its own processes, and fails to detect the error, or detects it but incorrectly attemps to recover it repeatedly (and endlessly). Notably the process loop for window/UI messages (that manage user events and refresh events) can be relauched repeatedly when there's alsready one message being processed but not completely.
There's some deadlock or failing assumption in the Chrome design, and notably on how its multiple processes are communicating with each other of with the rest of hte system UI.
And this bug is here since the early beta version of Chrome v4 (now 2 years ago, and 3 major releases since then, and soon a 4th major release one will come with this bug persisting in Chrome v7 beta ! Google is then performing even MUCH WORSE than Microsoft about critical bugs).
In other words, the claims advertized by Google are just winds, evaporating and compeltely false: a multiprocess browser can be as much (or more) affected by critical issues (including this one which is also a security issue, because a 100% CPU usage and heay system ressource usage is causing many systems to become unusable, so the bug is creating a DoS attack (denial of service), when it forces users to shutdown and reboot their system completely (as it happens in Windows, and ONLY when using Chrome), and can even cause the systems to overheat (notably notebooks), damaging them permanently (with important data losses).
For these reasons, I no longer consider Chrome as a safe browser. I has just won during these least years because of its comparitive speed, but all other browsers have also seriously progressed. When IE9 will be released in the next few months (its beta is already very impressive), it will completely erase all the advances made by Chrome rapidly, due to the critical uncorrected bugs (signaled since too long, and never considered seriously by competent developers and testers employed by Google, or because of an apparent stupid Google policy where bugs that are not detected and reported by the Google Crash Handler should be given low priority).
In fact, I even doubt that Google ever reads these support forums, except to post a few FALSE claims and DANGEROUS resolution hints, or DAMAGING solutions (such as removing some softwares that jsut happen to be affected by the Chrome bug, and not the reverse! ) or installing security suites.
Is Google serious ? Not ! And I even better trust Microsoft than Google now (even if Microsoft was quite low on my scale, but it has considerably progressed, when Google is constantly decreasing its score). Google can know what to do on ITS servers, but what it does on our PCs is really bad (Google has no real expertize in this domain, and constantly performs assumptions).
Do you see also a high CPU usage (100% in one core at least) ?
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||OBgeff||5/10/11 5:09 AM|
I"m having more problems with this, and it affects other things...like chrome needs a reminder of what it's doing or something: I'm always clicking the 'reload' button when I shouldn't have to, and sometimes I loose posts because of it...and the 'kerz' solution didn't work, either...

Have the same problem, any news on this annoying problem?
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||OBgeff||6/6/11 11:24 AM|
I finally removed Chrome and reinstalled. Gmail still can load forever, but webpages seem to be loading quickly, as usual before I began to get plagued with this.

I am moving back to IE. I hate it less than pealing Chrome.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||tcwjonny||7/21/11 2:55 PM|
I'm having this issue as well...really annoying. It's happening at work but not at home. Same version of browser and everything else is the same (including extensions) because I have them sync.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||paulg78||7/26/11 8:11 AM|
Here is what I see: I click on a link and "waiting on <URL>" appears at bottom left. I have found that if the page doesn't come up in a few seconds, it isn't going to come up. Instead it eventually times out. If I stop the page load and click the link again, it often comes up quickly. If I go to the same link in the Safari browser, the page loads right away. So it appears that something is going wrong as soon as I click a link. It's as if Chrome sometimes doesn't send a query so it ends up waiting for an answer that will never come. I've seen this on multiple websites. I have been unable to reproduce the problem using an alternate browser (Safari or Firefox) on the same websites.
My environment: Mac OS X 10.6.8; Chrome 12.0.742.122
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||Okoth||7/30/11 4:38 PM|
Same problem here, Chrome hangs during opening a new tab. I'm going to move to Opera. Please let me know when the problem is fixed.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||OBgeff||7/30/11 8:39 PM|
Still going on with me, too... I even switched *Operating Systems* and thought I'd give that a try. And after downloading chrome--linux, Debian--I find that it stalls even longer. About half the time, nothing at all comes up until I reload, sometimes two or three times...and yes, only Chrome does this...it seems faster, but who cares, since it doesn't load the whole page...
so it's two separate, related problems: either doesn't load the whole page, or *does* load it, but keeps loading, like it's in some kind of endless loop...
This is in Windows 7 and also linux Debian.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||TheDDM||8/2/11 8:34 AM|
This is now occurring on my machine at work. I have re-installed once. Which fixed the issue, however when I restarted chrome the "Loading..." issue resumed. Attempted to look at other pages including chrome://settings which also doesn't load. This is such a deadstop issue that people are just moving browser. Get on it Google.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||wsharten||8/15/11 8:32 AM|
Until a month ago, Chrome worked fine on my Mac. Since then it started hanging up forever; I have to kill the process, and even when I do there are still Chrome processes executing and consuming the CPU. I have switched to FireFox.

Having the same issue, Just once every few months it would be nice if google got it right with chrome.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||OBgeff||8/15/11 10:43 PM|
Started out such a cool browser, faster than anybody, clean and efficient. But this last year, it's just been more trouble than it's worth. I'm going back to Firefox. Google's had plenty of time to figure out why their browser has these problems. They want to be all things to everybody and lost site of what they got fame and fortune for in the first place.
Get a grip, google, quit trying to run the world and fix your damn browser...
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||MarvinMartian22||8/21/11 12:49 PM|
I too am having the hang problem.....even on google sites! I am running XP and look at Task Manager to see if there is anything spiking the CPU and don't see anything. I do see a lot of chrome processes, but nothing consuming the cpu.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||kabennett||9/1/11 10:06 AM|
I'm having the same problem. I can't believe this is an 18mo old thread with not a single answer/suggestion/intervention by Google. Seriously?? I guess they really are too busy trying to run the world. Things like this usually signal the beginning of the end.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||OBgeff||9/1/11 10:22 AM|
I finally switched to bing And I've been with google since the old days, when webcrawler and others just couldn't hold a candle to google. But I'm sick of this. Bing works good. Google's gotten so big for it's britches: they can spend zillions on anything they want, and can't even fix their search engine. I can remember when MS had gotten the same way, now google is the powerhouse, and like MS, they are screwing everything up. Hell, even IE9 is way better.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||kabennett||9/1/11 11:32 AM|
HERE'S WHAT FIXED IT FOR ME....
Since Google doesn't seem to be monitoring it's own help forum, I'll post what worked for me. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling - no luck. However, while trying to rescue my bookmarks I noticed that the application data file for Chrome was over 500MBs. Not sure if it was the sheer size or if there was something corrupt/problematic in there, but renaming the "Chrome" folder to "Chrome.bak" and then starting Chrome forced a clean rewrite of all the settings and got me working like new.
The folder is...Docs and Settings/<User>/Local Settings/Application Data/Google/Chrome. Your bookmarks, history, etc files are in the Default folder under that Chrome folder. Simply move them to the new "Chrome/Default" folder and you should be back in business.

|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||atelierparadise||9/15/11 11:44 AM|
Well after trying to fix this problem the last few days I've just decided to delete Google Chrome. Couldn't find a solution, and since Google offers absolutely no customer care I am forced to get rid of this garbage program with even worse customer service. I use google for many things and I'm at the point where I'm fed up. They offer NO CUSTOMER SERVICE, even with adsense, and adwords, where millions of dollars are traded, they offer NO CUSTOMER SERVICE. ^^^ is why Google will never make it long term... They are selfish as hell, at least Apple and Microsoft have customer support.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||atelierparadise||9/15/11 11:48 AM|
I mean get fucking real... all you douche bags did was make a search engine, SIMPLE AS FUCK. Get over yourself Google, I think you could offer some customer service for some of your products. Not this garbage
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||OBgeff||9/15/11 7:47 PM|
I wish they'd never gone public. A lot of people made a lot of money. Yay for them...but they butchered up a once useful and simple search engine and then browser. And obviously have no interest in making it work.
The funny thing it, IE9 is a great simple browser, a lot like chrome used to be. I suggest people give it a try. I use firefox for many things, as it's add ons are handy.
google started out winning everybody over, and powering the net because of it's simplicity. They remind me of microsoft in the old days, where MS made computers simple, then got power hungry. Digital tragedy...we'll see who the next king is.
I'd been a google fan for the longest time. Got a google nexus one when they first came out...got lucky and got a cr48, the free google computer with chrome as the OS. I actually like that: whoever the crew working on the the Chrome as Operating System is, I wish they come over and straighten out the rest of google.
Chrome just won't quit loading. Weird is that it does it in linux too...but it doesn't do it in my Chrome OS: on there it just loads and quits, the way it's supposed to. But on Windows 7 and on Debian, my chrome browser starts loading...and keeps loading....

|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||Haggee||10/18/11 4:36 PM|
I've been having problems with specific pages hanging, and it's been going on for perhaps more than a year. I went through all the complete uninstalls, disabling extensions, etc. to no avail. I ended up suspecting the GPU for reasons I won't go into. In order to test things out, I tried going to one of the failing pages by launching Chrome with the following option: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe --disable-gpu-sandbox .
After launching the browser with that option and going to one of the failing pages, things loaded fine AND continued to load afterward. I also had a website that was hanging (only one one computer) when using a particular extension, which I had disabled many months ago. After I found that this option fixed some pages, I reenabled that extension and found that it now worked fine, but only in conjunction with the --disable-gpu-sandbox option.
The same web pages worked fine with Chrome on other machines, and these pages, as well as that particular extension worked fine with Chrome in the past on the failing machine. I don't know what changed with Chrome or when it changed, but things are working for me now.
Since I can't find any information on how to debug (or even report) GPU issues, I'll just leave it this way for now. I hope this helps somebody.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||dlorde||10/31/11 4:18 AM|
Haggee's solution using C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe --disable-gpu-sandbox seems to work for me too.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||platetone||11/9/11 7:14 AM|
I'm seeing this exact problem and it's driving me nuts. Opening even just a single new tab will freeze up the browser for 20-30 seconds, then the page finally loads and you can scroll again.
This is my setup:
Chrome 15.0.874.106 m on Win 7 64-bit; Intel Core2 Duo T9300 @ 2.5 Ghz; 8GB RAM; Dell D630 laptop
I have tried this side-by-side on the same network with no problems with this WinXP setup:
Chrome 15.0.874.106 m on WinXP 32-bit; Intel Pentium D 3.00 Ghz; 3GB RAM; Dell Precision desktop
It really seems like something about running Win 7 64-bit. I tried turning off all Aero junk because I noticed dwm.exe spiking a bit while Chrome freezes, but that didn't help either. I have disabled all plugins and that doesn't help. I have no problems opening the exact same pages/tabs in Firefox 7.x.
I tried the -disable-gpu-sandbox fix and it worked for one page request, then "GPU Process" launches in the Chrome task manager and everything started freezing up again. While watching i/o, cpu, and memory in the Windows Task Manager, you can see that NOTHING is going on when the browser freezes up. The only thing I see is a little activity in "I/O Other Bytes" on the main chrome.exe process.
I really, really, really like Chrome and don't want to stop using it. All my other computers work fine with it -- but unfortunately my work laptop doesn't and it's the one I use 90% of the time.
I wish there was something to do about this besides complain about it here. I see a bug for this filed on the Chromium site:
Maybe we should all add comments there?
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||platetone||11/9/11 7:39 AM|
I just had a co-worker with the exact same Win 7 64-bit laptop setup (except he has 4GB RAM) install a clean copy of the latest Chrome with no plugins. He did not have it installed before. The same tab freeze up that I see happens on his machine, too.
Then I tried it on another co-worker's exact same laptop, but with Windows XP 32-bit. Chrome has no problems loading multiple tabs. There is definitely something jacked about 64-bit OS and Chrome.
Are other people here on Win 7 64-bit?

|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||platetone||11/16/11 9:35 AM|
I'm pretty bummed out to have to stop using Chrome, but it's pretty much unusable on 64-bit Win 7. I've just moved back to Firefox as the default browser for the first time 2+ years.
I'm going to be installing a fresh 64-bit Win 7 instance on different hardware at home soon. I will try out the same tests I've done above, just to make sure it's not a hardware-related problem.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||raydodd||11/19/11 11:28 AM|
Richardson ... I have the exact same issue on a 64-bit Win 7 system and have tried several times to delete %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data several times. Doing this causes chrome to start fresh with no apps, ext, hist, etc. It worked well for awhile then hung again. I'm back on FF also until the chrome team comes up with a fix.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||platetone||12/9/11 10:47 AM|
I just rebuilt my home computer with a fresh, clean 64-bit Win 7 image, and I'm not seeing the problem stated above. Chrome works fine with multiple tabs. I've even sync'd all my add-ons and everything. No issues. And the computer is much less powerful, with half the RAM, and a circa 2005 processor.
There is still something here, though. Chrome is still unusable on my work laptop with 64-bit Win 7. This majorly sucks because I want to use Chrome everywhere, and sync.

|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||tinazz||2/13/12 6:53 PM|
I'm not sure if this is the same problem; Chrome doesn't seem to 'hang' so much on me. It used to happen all over the place while loading or reloading random pages, but now, apparently, it only and always happens when you refresh using F5; if you load new pages or reload pages using F6+Enter instead, it loads completely normally. I don't know if this will help, but I noticed something extremely strange: when I'm using Chrome without incognito, then it 'hangs' whenever I refresh with F5, which is pretty annoying. But if I use incognito mode, then it goes away completely...
I don't have 64-bit, and I suspect the discussion turned into a different route than the OP's comment- you guys are talking about it 'hanging' as in freezing or becoming unresponsive weirdly, but the OP describes a situation where it just loads completely blank pages, even while it remains responsive and all other tabs work normally. It's not freezing, just loading a blank page. This is the issue I was experiencing, but for some reason when I use incognito it goes away.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||platetone||2/23/12 9:11 AM|
HOLY CRAP! It seems to be fixed.
Last night I uninstalled "Cisco Security Agent" (something my company force installs on my laptop), and now I have no Chrome performance problems.
If you have that garbage running on your laptop, it might be causing this issue. You may need to set your Program Files\Cisco folder to "read only" after uninstalling to make sure your company background software install processes can't force-install it again.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||markgoodson||2/28/12 4:37 AM|
A crying shame. I also have this Chrome stalling problem. Have just moved from PCs and Linux to a Macbook Air. Chrome always worked fine for me before but now I have this intermittent stalling problem. Most annoying is on Google searches. I'd rather stick with Chrome because my bookmarks sync across machines and I like it, but if it doesn't fix itself soon I will have to use Safari, or install Opera or Firefox.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||pb76||4/3/12 10:55 AM|
Thank you, Haikton. This fixed my issue.
My issue actually wasn't intermittent hanging. For me, nothing would load in any tab - including "chrome://version". This was after a new install of Chrome.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||zefi||7/31/12 9:27 PM|
I am on Windows 7 64 bit, had same problem with chrome. Re-installing will not solve the issue. What I found useful was..
First go to..
User Profile(Normally your computer name).. and find the folder
Delete all the contents of the folder (ALERT!! If you have important bookmarks first you will need to import on another browser, otherwise LOST)
Now Re-Install Chrome and Its clean and smooth now. If on 1st re-install doesn't fixes, remove it completely by going to control panel and then re-install again...works perfect ..!!

I am having a very similar problem. However it only happens very occasionally and seemingly just with a specific site at a time (other sites load no problem).
However when I try to load the problematic site, it just shows the connection as "pending" in the network tab and it never gets past "waiting for <host>...".
The exact same url loads instantly in Safari with no problems.
|Re: Chrome hangs while loading webpages||Logan Murray||7/9/13 1:29 PM|
It appears that clearing my cookies for the site in question fixed the issue. It is now loading properly again. Not sure if it's a bug in Chrome or in the site.
