Save the crx file example on you desktop and then drag it to the URL bar (omnibar) of Google Chrome. Then click on install.

This is a know issue of Google Chrome.

Try do this (3 times). It must work. I just test it also.

If it still does't work, then extract the crx file to a folder (just like a zip file). Go then to chrome://extensions/

a) Bring up the extensions management page by clicking the Tools menu and choosing Extensions.
b) If Developer mode has a + by it, click the + to add developer information to the page. The + changes to a -, and more buttons and information appear.
c) Click the Load unpacked extension button. A file dialog appears.
d) In the file dialog, navigate to your extension's folder and click OK.

Another issue is that each time, restart chrome i find that there are no extensions, and i have to load them again to use them...

In the Google Chrome dev version, is that problem fixed (manual load extension -> restart browser -> and the extension is still there).

Any movement on this issue?  I'm not about to waste any more time developing an extension if I'm going to have to tell potential users to 'ok well save it, rename it, unzip it, drag it, open this menu option, click on developers mark, load unzipped extension', only to have it disappear the next time they open the browser.

I had this problem too.

I had set the option for Downloads: "Ask me each time where to save a download" or something similar.

Then the "default" download location (which was not used anymore for downloads and was grayed out/unavailable for editing) pointed to a folder that no longer existed (because I had deleted it from the hard drive).

My guess is that each time I tried to install an extension it would try to (temporarily) save it to this "default" download location.

What I did was unset the  "Ask me each time where to save a download" (or something similar) option, selected a "default" download location to a folder which existed and then set the "Ask me each time where to save a download" option again.

After this I had no longer problems installing extensions.

I am still getting the error message about unable to create the directory for unzipping.
Re: Unable to Install Any Extension or Theme ! Tewan 9/3/10 6:08 PM
Hmm... maybe it is coincidence, but I had a thought when reformatting.

My normal procedure is to immediately download Chrome, and get it installed on first boot. Upon first launch of Chrome, Windows normally asks to allow or deny the program from running. I allow it. After all my drivers are downloaded and installed, I disable UAC and restart. Every time I've done this, I'm unable to install extensions.

Today I noticed... "Hey, Windows sucks at everything... why wouldn't it suck at privileges when using UAC?"
Knowing this, I immediately turned UAC off on first boot, rebooted, and then installed Chrome. I'm able to install extensions again!

If anyone can recreate this, we've successfully found one of the problems with this everlasting problem.
