Why isn't Google Chrome compatible with "Norton 360 4.0" or other Norton security products? CCEntertain2M 10/19/10 9:09 AM
I just (Tuesday 10/19/2010) received an email from Norton technical support that stated that my recently installed "Norton 360 4.0" (and other Norton security products: "Norton 2011", etc.) are NOT compatible with Google Chrome (I'm using the latest non-beta release of Google Chrome, version 6.0.472.63.).  Norton stated that their security products are compatible with Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers.  What does not being compatible with Google Chrome mean?  Why aren't Norton security products compatible with Google Chrome?

I have a Toshiba Satellite (model: A505-S6005) laptop running "Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)".

I like all 3 browsers: Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer 8 and Google Chrome, but I like Google Chrome slightly better, overall, than Mozilla Firefox (version 3.6.10) or Internet Explorer 8 (version 8.0.7600.16385 (64-bit Edition)).  Google Chrome seems to run slightly faster and is simpler to use, and I like being able to "Google" by using the same Address bar area and not having to go to a separate Google Search bar area.  But, if Google Chrome is not compatible with my security software, "Norton 360 4.0", I'll have to only use Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer.

This is Norton's issue, they have had over 2 years to make a version of there security software that is compatible with chrome and yet they have seemingly done nothing about it.

Thank you "timmmy_42" and "Ankit Sharma" for your quick responses to my question.

Today, Wednesday 10/20/2010, I received another email from Norton that Norton's security products ONLY support Mozilla Firefox (version 3.0 or higher/newer but not beta versions) if you have Windows 7 (64-bit).  Norton security products ("Norton 360 Version 4.0" (which I have), "Norton Internet Security 2011", etc.) do NOT support Google Chrome at all, and only support Internet Explorer (32-bit only; version 6 or higher). ( I have "Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)".)  Norton said in their email that they are working on having their security products to be "compatible" with Google Chrome and Internet Explorer (64-bit), but did not state when this would happen.  Does anyone have any idea why Norton has not addressed these problems for Google Chrome and Internet Explorer (64-bit)?  (I really like using Google Chrome.)

"Norton 360 Version 4.0" is the best and "latest and greatest", to my knowledge, that Norton currently offers for security (It contains "Norton Internet Security 2011" plus antiphishing, computer tune-up features, etc.).  Is there another product that anyone is aware of that is as good or better than "Norton 360 Version 4.0" or "Norton Internet Security 2011"?  (Consumer Reports magazine, the June 2010 issue, rates "Norton Internet Security 2011" as the best of those that were rated.)

Norton is certainly not indispensable.

Security issues are thoroughly discussed in dedicated forums such as http://www.wilderssecurity.com or even http://www.techsupportalert.com/freeware-forum.

Norton just emailed me again today, 3pm(ET) Wednesday 10/20/2010, and said that their Norton security products do support the 2 browsers: "Mozilla Firefox 3.6" and "Internet Explorer 8" for PCs running OS "Windows 7 (64-bit)".  But, as mentioned before, Norton security products do NOT presently support "Google Chrome", but Norton is working on doing so.  (Apparently, the previous email, Wednesday 10/20/2010, from Norton was in error with the information that they didn't support "Internet Explorer 8" for PCs running "Windows 7 (64-bit)" that was sent to me by a different Norton Security Products Tech. Support person.)

My god!  If these responses are a measure of Google-ite mentality then I guess arrogance is the keystone for such folk.   NOT Google problem?!!  Well, yes it is a Google problem cuz I don't want to deal with a company who operates from such a stance.  And I won't buy its stock either.  Google is not indispensible nor infinitely at the top.  It's time of being second to others will come as it comes to all.
More than anything I despise arrogance.

It is entirely Symantec's issue to deal with compatibility problems with 3rd party software, they may choose not to do so it is entirely up to them of course but it is a shame that they choose to not support one of the more popular browsers, I swore by internet explorer until release 7 which began having major issues after only about 2 weeks, I then discovered Chrome and have been loyal to it ever since. Would you blame FORD if their vehicles did not run well on Phillips 66 gas NO you should blame Phillips, the same is true here, Symantec has gotten so lazy (I use Symantec AV 2011 by the way) that their support is now based on and auto support function built into the software, and the only answer it provides is remove and re-install the software even after it's so called detections process found no issues, that is good customer service. Way to go Symantec!

OK people, try to remain calm. Of course Symantec is not going to come out and explain that if you are using Chrome and a reasonable firewall and some kind of Anti-Virus, of which there are many that are free and reliable out there, along with patch updating for netbot defence, then Chrome is a safe and reliable browser in and of itself. For instance, as I'm sure many of you are aware, Chrome will not allow a toolbar installatin. This is one of the many things that makes Chrome so well loved. However, with all the "add-ons" & "gadgets" and what not that are available to somewhat defeat that concept of simplicity, safety, and most of all, superior screen real estate, it is folly to blame Norton for not promting that which is not needed,ie: their product.

Does anyone else here feel that katydid did not or does not ever need to reply to anymore posts....complaining about arrogance, and feeling that her denial of contribution to their stock actually matters in the grand scheme of things....being that as it may, i think google will survive without her denying a stock purchase, and that if she doesnt like the chrome system that currently works for many many many many other users, she may choose firefox or even internet explorer since norton 360 is needed on those and not on chrome!!!!! "cuz" thats how i roll!!!

katydid41 is too illustrative of my point exactly...if Chrome is your browser and you use your most common basic security practices, then Norton should be redundant at best.

Norton 4 and Google Chrome will work independently on your computer. Their toolbar only supports Firefox and IE. Their toolbar warns you of phishing sites and harmful downloads. While Chrome already contains protection against malicious code (better than Firefox and IE), some people install the free WOT extension for "extra protection". But they won't conflict with each other. If I have more information, I will let you know. For now, you can check if a website is safe or not using:

I'm glad I asked.I'm probably one the only people that has dial-up. I found trying to install Google Chrome was an extremely difficult and time-consuming. I think I will try to down load Mozilla Foxfire unless it  might not be  good for my computer.

It makes no difference to me who "owns" the problem, the bottom line is that though I like Chrome the best of the browsers I have tried, I  can't use it because it conflicts with Norton. What am I supposed to do? Throw out  my Norton after something like five years of excellent service from them? Lose my months  that I still have left on the contracts? It's a  shared concern. Chrome can't slough it off but maybe they think they can. The two companies are each  big enough, they need to work together to resolve these problems and not leave the customer in the lurch.

Well, if Norton is not needed, I am left wondering why Chrome kept crashing my computer. I am running Vista (32). The pages just kept hanging up. Could I have had the wrong version? I didn't think that was the case. What's the safest place to download Chrome btw? And it was using high resources, as identified by Norton.

i use NIS 2011 and it does not provide browser protection on chrome. It does however block any harmful content from affecting ur computer. It just does not pop up those yellow graphics on chrome as it does on the internet explorer or firefox.

It's coming guys! Check out this site to see a picture of the the 2012 version of Norton Internet Security, which definitely has a toolbar for Chrome: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Norton-Toolbar-on-Google-Chrome-s-BUG/m-p/440326/highlight/true#M891

Google chrome U are not listening to what we are are saying............You just lost me and I loved Chrome but pointing the finger at Norton back and forth is bull shit.  Do u have any idea how many PC's I fix? 99% like chrome and Facebook Mafia wars and so much more and They are Pissed because Norton and chrome no longer work together on a PC. I'm going to install IE 9 on all of their PC's and delete Chrome from them. This is bullshit. And you dont even have any other anti virus protection links people could use until this is solved. I know why to: I been looking for hours and can't find any?  Well have any ideas?

McAfee SiteAdvisor is also compatible with chrome.
