| why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | MattH77 | 20/06/12 15:41 | Can anyone tell me why my Macbook Pro crashes completely (ie the screen turns pale blue and I have to switch it off completely) when I press "cmd Q" to shut down Google Chrome? There seems to be quite a few comments floating around from people with similar problems but no real suggestions that actually help. Please help!!... |

Throws a kernel panic every hour or two, and it's always Chrome in the diagnostic report. There are tons of threads about this on the Apple Support forums too, e.g., https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4042029?start=0&tstart=0 So Google, what's up? |

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | MattH77 | 24/06/12 17:25 | I'm gonna bump this in the hope that someone from Google will finally answer! Or should we all just use a different browser on Mac? |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | MMNYC | 24/06/12 19:44 | Me too. I reinstalled Lion and I was still getting panics. I just uninstalled Chrome so now I'm waiting to see what happens. I'm pretty sure it's Chrome. Google, fix this! |

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Toni (Googler) | 28/06/12 08:57 | Can all of you having this problem with the kernel panic try disabling hardware acceleration in Flash settings? Please let us know if it worked for you (it'll help us in our investigation). Here's how to do it: 1. Go to a webpage with a Flash video (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTjHCCU2E4c) 2. Right-click in the middle of the video 3. Click Settings 4. Click the left-most tab 5. Uncheck the 'Enable hardware acceleration' checkbox to disable hardware acceleration. 6. Refresh the page |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Toni (Googler) | 28/06/12 09:05 | Thanks jtn0123! We'll reach out to you separately when ready. Before we do that though, can you try my disabling hardware acceleration tip above and let me know if that worked? |

They are all 10.6.8 iMacs or MacBook Pros. I have tried the turning off "Enable Hardware Acceleration" but it still crashes. Please fix this issue Google. I have to update and deploy to 400 iMacs at my school and this can't be an issue, we are an all Google School. 6 weeks away till school starts again, hope you get it fixed by then. This occurs on many sites using Flash, the reason I hate flash. Can't wait till HTML 5 takes completely over. Chris |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | MattH77 | 11/07/12 05:55 | Does this mean that Google have no idea what's going on and can't help? Should we just change our search engine? This is getting a bit frustrating now. I would much rather use Google Chrome because when it works I really like it. But if it's going to keep making my Mac crash I'm afraid I might as well look elsewhere. Shame. |

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | DaveSF | 19/07/12 11:52 | Because this is a kernel panic, it's obvious the bug is in Apple's kernel and driver and not Chrome. (Applications can't crash a protected OS kernel unless it's faulty) Looking at the kernel-panic log, this is obviously a bug in the Apple Intel HD 4000 video driver, everyone should go report feedback to Apple about how they should fix their video driver. There are rumors that Apple is aware of their video driver bug and made a fix, but that the fix has not yet been rolled out. If you want the techy details, you can see a fairly informed discussion here... |

I've been looking through this forum, seeing as it addresses an issue I've had; I do have a 4000 Intel card in my computer, so if you would like ask me questions about it, please don't hesitate to email me. I'd be more than glad to get this fixed. : ) As of now, my computer hasn't frozen and crashed... however, for the past few months since I got the computer, both the freezing and an error message upon startup saying "your profile could not be read correctly" (more, I can post a screenshot if needed) have happened each time I open Chrome. I hope I can help resolve the issue; I did see in the forums somewhere that somebody else was able to fix it by updating to the latest version of Chrome from an older one. I just did this, and I have yet to crash. I'll keep you guys posted! |

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Sie_Deen | 14/08/12 14:40 | @JMDancer, can you confirm your Chrome version (wrench > About Google Chrome), and Mac OS version? It's interesting that you are currently experiencing these kernel panics, since the current Stable version has a blacklist on GPU access on Mac OS X Lion with Intel HD 4000. |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Sie_Deen | 14/08/12 14:48 | @Kmak868, thanks for posting the details of your graphics card. | Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Sie_Deen | 15/08/12 10:08 | @FeelDix, can you describe the crash that you are seeing when you watch YouTube videos? Is it a kernel panic/Mac crash, or Chrome browser crash? |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Stephen Rasku | 15/08/12 11:17 | @Sie_Deen, I am getting a kernel panic when this happens. The computer reboots. I don't have a backtrace to attach but I can the next time it happens. |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | FeelDix | 15/08/12 16:54 | It is a Mac/kernel panic crash, the macbook reboots, then shows the white screen crash message. I'll post the crash log next time when it happens again. |

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | dminus | 20/08/12 15:54 | Seems to happen for me only when switching to tabs with graphic-intensive content (large image i.e. Mars rover panorama photo viewer, Flash video, etc). Usually happens when closing multiple tabs in succession; crash occurs when next open tab contains lots of graphic content. Roughly half the time, it seems that the rendered page is in the process of being re-scaled for the retina display just before the crash occurs. I can supply panic log for the last 5 crashes if needed. |

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | fisherhistoryteach | 31/08/12 08:52 | My Mac Book Pro with Retina Display recently had a hard drive crash from continual Google Chrome failure. It was my fault for not changing to another web browser. When I went to the Apple store and called for help support they believe it has something to do with the graphic accelerator not being compatible with Google Chrome. That's about all I can offer. They ended up sending me a new Mac Book Pro with Retina Display. |

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | jcbookhout | 11/09/12 09:02 | I am using a retina MBP with Moutain Lion 10.8.1 installed. I have only the rarest of kernel panics, but having Chrome open occasionally causes Mac OS X to become unresponsive other than the mouse. No commands work and force quit is inoperative. I think this behavior is confined to when Chrome is open. It always begins with Chrome failing to load a webpage. I think it might be related to use of the Intel HD 4000 chip. The problem has persisted across a complete clean install of OS X. |

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | bhspencer | 01/10/12 08:38 | I am having the same type of crash reported by the original poster. MacBook pro with retina display. Running OSX 10.8.2. It has only happened while running Chrome. It happened twice today. In both cases it was while either plugging in to or unplugging an external Thunderbolt display. I suspect that this crash is related to auto switching between the intel HD4000 and the Nvidia device as the Nvidia device is activated when an external display is connected. Any help would be very much appreciated.

None of the aforementioned solutions has solved the problem. Have their been any success stories? |

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Darold Dickey | 05/11/12 18:35 | I keep seeing everywhere that google is only interested in the problems with Chrome on MacBook Air. The problem seems to be on MacBook Pro's like my mid 2010 13" model. Please look into the whole of the Lion and Mountain Lion OSs. I think it must have something to do with that. I am running Mountain Lion and am experiencing crashing usually when I start the Mac's native Mail program and have Chrome running at the same time. |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | fulleclipse2 | 13/11/12 05:37 | I agree with you. It seems, it is echo of the old Flash-Apple war. I have the freezing problem on my old 2008 mac. The freezing happens while using Chrome. Chrome is my second browser for years, but the problem happens only now, after Google has stopped supporting Chrome on my mac. |

It won't allow me to refresh the page or click through anything so I just close the window down and start all over again. I thought maybe it was something weaseled it's way into my mac but nothing did. If I work on Safari, my windows don't freeze. I really enjoy Chrome and would love to continue to use it but I'll have to stick with Safari if this can't get fixed. I've tried the suggestion above with no success. Please help!! |

On the other hand, Chrome developed a freeze on my macbook after Google stopped supporting Leopard and removed Flash plug-in (the last version is 20 or 21). There is a more explainable reason; Chrome is in a blacklist in my Institute. Thus, the third party may freeze the browser intentionally. Just try your Chrome at different access points; at home, in the office, in other country.

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Hughsbeard | 26/11/12 05:46 | Hey, I'm using a MBP Retina 15 with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB. i'm running 10.8.2 and experiencing complete freezing of my OS. To give you more context it freezes when I multiple tabs open most recently with google finance, a number of tumblr sites, youtube video and random news sites. So in other words procrastinating. |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | altoning | 26/11/12 06:02 | I've got the same configuration (MacBook Pro 15" Retina) and it freezes when I re-focus the tabs and mouseover the following pages: http://wind.altoning.com/temp Is it some javascript that causes the MacBook to freeze? After it freezes I need to perform a hard reboot using the power switch. -Alton |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | altoning | 26/11/12 06:10 | The freezing occurs randomly about 1-5% of the time with the following pages - but often enough to loose critical work. Not sure if it's worse when I have many tabs open with includes GMail (Google Apps) pinned. http://wind.altoning.com/temp P.S. I always view the same web pages on Ubuntu 12.04 and freezing never occurs. |

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Sie_Deen | 26/11/12 17:23 | Hey folks, If you are only experiencing crashes recently, you are likely seeing a different issue from the earlier posts (~June-July) on this thread (kernel panics). Please let us know about the following so that we can troubleshoot this further:
If you are instead experiencing freezing/hangs, where Chrome doesn't crash, please also let us know, as we treat these differently. |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Vince Dowd | 26/11/12 18:22 | The MAC just freezes all programs with pinwheel of death often. I just am going to erase Chrome and use firefox/safari. This should be a priority to either Google or Apple but Apple said not their issue it is software outside so they don't really care and I get it but if google wants to be on MACS they should get it to work, I use it in my seminars but now will be moving to other browsers....no time for it. There is no words just freezes and have to hard reboot Cheers |

But I was only informed that Google stops updating Chrome on my Leopard starting from version 20 or 21. It is strange that a consequence of that is freezing of my mac. |

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | yash008 | 27/11/12 13:04 | Hi, I've had to stop using chrome because of this issue. I'm using a Retina Macbook Pro, 15". It is not a chrome crash, it is system unresponsiveness, resulting in me having to either force reboot the system, or a kernel panic. I was using Chrome 24 beta, but downgrading to Chrome 23 does not solve the problem. Based on reports by a 3rd party application (gfxcardstatus) it appears that chrome has largest dependencies on the GPU. I'd really like to be able to use chrome again. Thanks |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | karen ammann | 27/11/12 14:11 | When I am browsing in Chrome it will suddenly stop responding, then Firefox and Safari will also stop responding (I usually run all three during my work day). I upgraded to Mountain Lion thinking that would help, I upgraded to 8 GB RAM thinking that would help, nope. I'm working on a 2010 Pro 13" running ML, Chrome version 23.0.1271.91. When Chrome crashes I can't even Force Quit anything. I can't pull up terminal, I have to manually restart the computer. I did the Flash fix you suggested and have enabled crash reports. |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | cfm11813 | 28/11/12 02:05 | I gave up for a while and abandoned Chrome :( I then tried with latest release (27 I think) and it too caused Mac kernel panics. Heres my workaround: All good since then. |

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | fulleclipse2 | 28/11/12 04:05 | Yep. It looks like Chrome is the reason of the unresponsiveness. Have you ever seen Google's report on freezes and kernel panics and how Chrome is involved in these problems? I would like to see it. You may try versions older than 20. Does Google have a site with Chrome archives? There is a site, but it is not Google's official one: http://mac.oldapps.com/google_chrome.php? Thanks. |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Mike Carvalho | 28/11/12 07:28 | I'm at the end of my rope now -- I had to resort to using Firefox all day yesterday to avoid the constant freezes, and I've had no issues since. I'm on a MacBook Pro model MC372LL/A (mid-2010) running 10.6.8. Automatic Chrome updates are enabled, so I'm currently running 23.0.1271.91. Or at least I was before Chrome became unusable. No chrome://crashes have been recorded since 11/14, probably because the entire computer is locking up. Crashes have been happening consistently since 11/26. That appears to be the date of the last Chrome update? Do we have a culprit? |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Jeffery Johnson | 29/11/12 13:09 | I also am having this problem in Chrome only on my MBP Mid 2012 15in with Geforce GT 1024. I have an Early MBP 13in that it does not happen on. It will sometimes go a day or so without crashing, but usually at least once a day. Sometimes (like today) 5 or 6 times. I have used Chrome exclusively for most tasks for awhile now, but am now removing from the Dock and reverting to FireFox and/or Safari. I hope Google can figure this out, because I really do prefer the Chrome experience, but the current versions are not stable on this machine at all. JJ -------------------------------- What type of crash are you experiencing? Is it a Mac kernel panic? It will look something like this. - This has happened twice, but usually it is the pinwheel and the MBP becomes completely unresponsive. The only solution, power off and back on. (e.g. Whoa, Google Chrome has crashed) -Nope Is it an Aw, Snap? -Nope Details from the chrome://version page, if you are able to navigate to this page without crashing. - Version 23.0.1271.95 , but this has been happening through several versions. | Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | nwebb | 22/01/13 21:53 | "If you are instead experiencing freezing/hangs" Yes, I've provided some details below. Please let me know if you need more. Wouldn't be such an issue if Chrome didn't cause the entire machine to hang.
1. What type of crash are you experiencing? Browser becomes unresponsive. CMD, OPT & ESC shows that Chrome is not responding. Browser hangs, Unable to close or even force quit. | Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | mgovindanv | 02/06/13 07:16 | I had the same problem following the installation of OS 10.8.3 in my MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2010 edition. I tried to get help from Genius, but they were unable to assist and directed me to Google. I decided to take the affair in my own hands. This is what I did: 1) Saved all my files and data into my stationary Hard Disk "Lassie" 2) Noted all the file extensions on my Chrome, Firefox & Safari Browsers. 3) Kept all the software Disks at hand for reinstallation. Removed all external connection other than the Power. 4) Made note of all Cloud storage information such as "Box, Drop Box, Google Drive & Sky Drive" Then, I forced quit all running Applications. 5) Shut down my MacBook Pro 6) Held down Command & R keys while Mac is starting. 7) Chose Disk Utility 8) Chose Erase my Mac HD. Took about 3 min. 9) Went back to Disk Utility. 10) Chose Reinstall OS X Mountain Lion, you need your iTune ID & Password. OS X Recovery has to download Mountain Lion from Apple. It took 3PM till 10.30PM to complete all operations. The Chrome browser is working as it should be and my LapTop is faster than when before. I hope you will have no problems to follow the instructions. Have a beautiful day |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Jan Berry | 21/08/13 10:53 | My problem (which started in the last week or so) is not a crash but a freeze....I get the spinning rainbow of death and have to hard reboot. It can happen even if I'm not actively on Chrome. I can be in another program, but if Chrome is open it can happen spontaneously. I'm on the verge of stopping the use of Chrome altogether and going back to Firefox, since this is happening so frequently. Macbook pro retina display with OSX 10.8.4 |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | mgovindanv | 21/08/13 11:56 | I had this problem 3 months ago with OS X 10.4 following upgrade. I tried all solutions suggested on line, however with out success. Then after frustration, I uninstalled Google Chrome completely and reinstalled the latest version. Since then I am using Chrome and I had never a crash nor any issues with Chrome. I run Chrome, Firefox, Camino & Safari in different windows and use the research engines for various purposes. I have 25-35 tabs on each window and my Laptop once in a while runs hot and I restart the machine . Tabs in the search engines are never lost and hope you will be able to use it with out efforts following complete removal and reinstallation. Best of luck |

| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | Jan Berry | 02/09/13 09:25 | I have uninstalled and installed. It'll be fine briefly, but then start freezing again. I'm giving up on Chrome until there's some resolution. A shame, because I liked Chrome. |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | nzacchino | 27/09/13 17:15 | Have you figured this out yet? I have had my MacBook Air since 2012 and it just started freezing constantly in Chrome and also a few ties in Safari. |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | LyonJE | 27/09/13 19:01 | The problem I reported is a failure by Google -- if you find the crashing/freezing is affecting Safari as well, it's probably a different problem. Chrome is now also exhibiting DNS failures, goodness knows how its resolver library is getting something wrong that the entirety of the rest of the O.S. and all my *nix hosts seem 100% capable of doing without a single fault year on year.... Change of focus by Google, I guess.... |
| Re: why does Google Chrome make my Macbook Pro crash? | John Bowers | 16/10/13 10:06 | I am seeing hangs periodically with Google chrome on my MacBook Pro Retina (with solid state hard-drive<- that may or may not be relevant). When it occurs, I can switch between tabs, but I cannot scroll or interact with links. Additionally, other apps freeze if I try to save a file, and force quit doesn't work on chrome or any subsequent app I've hung up by trying to save to disk. It necessitates a hard reset. |
