Re: how can i block a website?? kevinstonge 4/5/09 11:51 AM
I don't recommend relying on a browser to manage network traffic. I recommend editing your hosts file for a quick fix on a single machine, editing your hardware router's banlist, or configuring an account with opendns.com (once you are all set up, you can specify a long list of websites you do not want to allow access to on your home network).
On a more specific level, it sounds like you may have a virus--a website should not normally be capable of closing running applications.
Re: how can i block a website?? markh789 4/18/09 6:42 PM
Though, you should still have this and when you do go on it you get the phisher page stuff.. dose that website only close your applicaitons in google chrome? Or in other browser to? If it's only in google chrome you should report it.

Recently, my chrome is persistently going to http://survey1.suitesmart.com and I do not find a way to block the site.
Re: how can i block a website?? Bapabooiee 5/2/09 8:20 PM
aggjmz: If you want a quick fix, go to:

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\

There, you will see a text file named "hosts". Open it in notepad, and append

127.0.0.1   survey1.suitesmart.com

to the end. That's what I do when I want to quickly block a website.

erm, that looks more like you're removing it from the search locations.
if you click on a link or type the webaddress in to the browser does it still go there?

Re: how can i block a website?? noautoaudiovideo 9/15/09 6:02 AM
Hint:  Set your Hosts file to "read only" because some malware will wipe it out.  In IE I also use Internet Tools Security Restricted Sites tabs to block certain sites BUT Chrome doesn't carry over those settings.  That's why I will not be using Chrome very often.  I have hundreds of sites in the Restricted Sites zone and in Chrome they come up anyway!  That kills my security.  Also, try OpenDNS.com, you'll like it.  I use it to block domains from countries that are well known for malicious sites.

People have been addressing that question.  You cannot block sites from within Chrome, so people have been suggesting other ways to block sites that will work regardless of what browser you're using.

Re: how can i block a website?? caver_tim 12/7/09 2:12 AM
Serious question, how do you block sites in IE?
I can see how to block sites form being allowed to store cookies on your computer, but not block you from loading sites.

Re: how can i block a website?? Niwashi 12/7/09 8:21 AM
>> "how do you block sites in IE?"

In IE you can block them from running any scripts, applications or controls, from downloading or uploading anything, etc. (about 40 or 50 different things can be blocked) by listing them under "restricted sites" in the security tab of internet options, though oddly enough, not displaying the page at all doesn't seem to be among the options.  At least it lets you block them from doing anything that could be dangerous.
Re: how can i block a website?? caver_tim 12/9/09 5:03 AM
right sorry , thought you wanted to totally block the site. for example your 11 year old son keeps going to "www.rude-web-site.com"
the best way to do that is either editing the HOSTS file, or installing firewall / netnanny type software

Google DEFINITELY needs to work on this..it's a pretty big issue. All of the major browsers have a website blocking feature(inside the browser). I need to be able to do this as well. So many people do!

Re: how can i block a website?? Steamy100 6/3/10 3:15 PM
I tried several suggested methods and have so far seen no pop ups since i did this:
Copied the offending pop ups url, searched company contact list on google, found a directors name and email contact then sent the following email:

Dear, (contact name),

I am contacting you today in relation to (their company) pop up advertisements on my home pc.

Today I have received more than several pop ups from the following:
(url addresse/s)

I have had no troubles with pop ups until today and after taking advice from the windows help programs, I have ensured that all pop ups should be blocked.

However these sites have appeared time after time.

Any advice on this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards
(my name)

Hope this may work for others too.

FOLLOW THE STEPS GIVEN IN THIS WEBSITE FOR BLOCKING 1 OR MANY WEBSITES FROM ALL WEB BROWSERS..

http://www.delete-computer-history.com/how-to-block-a-website.html

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i am rewriting the steps to stop a website from this site ...

In Windows XP

1. Click Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt.
2. Click Command Prompt This will open a DOS command window.
3. Type: notepad C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts
4. Locate the line 127.0.0.1 localhost
5. To block the website google.com for example, just add this text under 127.0.0.1 localhost:

127.0.0.1 google.com
127.0.0.1 www.google.com

You can add as many sites any site, However you will need to prefix it with "127.0.0.1".

6. Save the file
Google will now be blocked in all web browser. This is an advanced but easy method on how to blow a website.
Re: how can i block a website?? abdullah.a30 9/3/10 11:01 PM
Dear Google and users

i find it very disappointing that there is no option in Google Chrome to block web sites to keep children and our own temptations in check.
as such, i think it will be better to use either IE or Firefox or other browsers which do have a simple check list to fill in and keep these web sites out of everyone's reach.

TO GOOGLE, I HOPE YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN READING THESE VIEWS AND ARE DOING SOMETHING URGENTLY ABOUT THIS.

regards

Re: how can i block a website?? caver_tim 9/16/10 1:34 AM
In internet explorer 7 you can go to
"internet options" -> "content" -> "content advisor"

it allows you to block sites according to their rating. Sadly by default it blocks both Playboy and my local mountain rescue team because very few sites actualy have ratings.
Tick the box to allow websites that have no rating, and Playboy becomes visible.

In the "approved sites" section you can specify sites to block.
I doubt however that you could ever create a list yourself of all sites that show flesh, including search engines and proxy sites.

In any case, any list you do come up with can be bypassed by using another browser eg "portable chrome" on a memory stick.

As i've said before, in my opinion, you're better off implementing a system wide firewall or Net Nanny type solution.

I don't have access to my IE 8 laptop at the moment so i can't tell you if things have got any better.

Take a look at Privoxy (http://www.privoxy.org/). Using it does require some willingness to edit text files. But it works across browsers and helps block ads as well.
Re: how can i block a website?? Thelittleman123 9/19/10 3:46 PM
Go to Local "Disk (C:)", then the "WINDOWS" file then in there go to "system32" then "drivers" then open the "etc" file then open the "hosts" file with "Notepad". Type " 127.0.0.1 " (no " ") then type the website you want to block and save the file. Then go to the website and you computer can not find the website. If and when you want to unblock, do the same steps above but erase the website and save.
     OR
1. Click Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt. 2. Click Command Prompt This will open a DOS command window. 3. Type: notepad C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts 4. Locate the line 127.0.0.1 localhost 5. To block the website google.com for example, just add this text under 127.0.0.1 localhost:

(In Microsoft Windows XP)

4. under networks click "change proxy settings"

5. go to the section "Security"

6. select "Restricted sites"

7. click "sites"

8. paste URL under "add this website to the zone"

9. Click add.

and Voila! website blocked
hope this helped
Re: how can i block a website?? caver_tim 10/8/10 1:30 AM
nope that does not block sites.
Re: how can i block a website?? ChandruD 1/14/11 7:10 PM
Hi All!

It works 100%.

Just follow the following :-)

1.Open Windows Explorer, and type "C:WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc" in the address bar, then press "Enter." Windows Explorer will present you with three files: "hosts," "network" and "protocol."

2. Open the 'Hosts' file in Notepad.

3. At the bottom of the document, give your IP address instead of this number-->"127.0.0.1", followed by at least one space, followed by the URL of the website you want to block. For example, if you wanted to block "www.abcd.com" you would enter "xxx.xxx.xx.xx  www.abcd.com" (Here xxx.. refer your IP address).

Type the exact name of the website but do not put "http://"(I mean that 'www' has to be entered). Doing so will result in the site being blocked. You are blocking the entire site regardless of protocol.

4. Save the document and reload the page.Need not restart  computer. Any attempt to visit the site you blocked in Chrome (or any other browser, for that matter) will result in an error message.

5. To unblock the website just open the 'Hosts' file and delete the website name.

Try these steps. You are there where you wanted to be...
Re: how can i block a website?? vasa1 1/14/11 11:07 PM
Chandru, are you sure?

IMO, if you want to block access to http://www.example.com, you should have this:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 www.example.com

Re: how can i block a website?? shaman.virk 2/3/11 11:51 PM
@ ChandruD and vasa1:
it work by appending:
127.0.0.1 www.example.com

and do not work with:
127.0.0.1 http://www.example.com

Re: how can i block a website?? ChandruD 2/12/11 4:40 AM
Hey Vasa1.

If  you want to block http://www.example.com, you should have this:

<'---Your IP Address--' ><space><www.example.com>

Note here that I’ve NOT used http and also 127.0.0.1.
Instead of using 127.0.0.1, use your IP address. You can block any website using this technique which works 100%.

Re: how can i block a website?? Danielheaven 3/15/11 9:30 PM
Instructions

1
Open Windows Explorer, and type "C:WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc" in the address bar, then press "Enter." Windows Explorer will present you with three files: "hosts," "network" and "protocol."

2
Open the "hosts" file. Right-click the file, choose "Open" and open the file in Notepad.

3
At the bottom of the document, add the numbers "127.0.0.1", followed by at least one space, followed by the URL of the website you want to block. For example, if you wanted to block "bing.com" you would enter "127.0.0.1 bing.com" to do so.

Do not put either "http://" or "www" in front of the names of websites you wish to block--doing so will result in the site not being blocked. You are blocking the entire site regardless of protocol.

4
Save the document and restart your computer. Any attempt to visit the site you blocked in Chrome (or any other browser, for that matter) will result in an error

I signed into my google account. Then went to settings. There a section for Ristricting Browsing. The last item on that section is about blocking a particular website. I added the website I wanted to block.

Use this article to read about Safe Search Settings. It is part of safe search settings.

Hi everyone,

There isn't a built-in feature to block websites in Google Chrome. However, there are many 3rd party Chrome extensions that can help you do this (e.g. "Chrome Nanny" as mentioned above). You can find "Chrome Nanny" and other possible extensions by checking out the Chrome Web Store in reference 1 below.

Re: how can i block a website?? ANOTHER ANNOYED USER (But alteast it's not M$) 7/4/11 8:43 PM
Am I  reviving a dead horse?

Ok, so Chrome doesn't have something built in.. no worries. HOSTS file will do the job.

Well it did.

Recently, after login off hotmail, I ma eventually redirected to "http://ca.msn.com/?OCID=hmlogout", which has continued to load, even thought I have an entry to block "ca.msn.com".

So my question is what is changing that is skipping/ignoring my HOSTS file?

Don't tell me I need some other ISP/DNS method to block.. (unless it IS required - I just don't see why, when my HOSTS file DID work, less then 4 days earlier! )

This is the original link at pressing "sign out":
(some formatting remove, to keep it friendly. :) )

id= c_signout  onmouseover= event.cancelBubble=true  href= /mail/logout.aspx  target= _top >sign out

Which simply goes to:
co120w.col120.mail.live.com/mail/logout.aspx

The re-directs go quickly..

This is one (the next I think.. or second after..)

ca.msn.com/?rd=1

Interestingly, when I cut this line, I was presented with a pop up. It indicates that I am from a Canadian site, and is asking if I would prefer a 'local' site (ca.msn.com or www.msn.com).

Perhaps this is where I need to edit for my HOSTS file.

Well.. let's see.

I'm adding:

127.0.0.1        ca.msn.com
127.0.0.1        www.msn.ca
127.0.0.1        www.msn.com
127.0.0.1        analytics.atdmt.com
127.0.0.1        analytics.live.com
127.0.0.1        analytics.msn.com

In theory, none of these sites, should be accessed.
And prior to this past week, I only had msn.ca and msn.com in the HOSTS file.

"Kyrax" makes a good point (www.chromeplugins.org/google/plugins-development/blocksite-addon-7598.html) Apps aren't the way to go.

My ideal : Hardware firewalls. in conjunction with HOSTS files.

BTW: I'll reply back if this DOES work. (I'll be busy trying to think of other ways, otherwise - so it might be a while.)
Re: how can i block a website?? ANOTHER ANNOYED USER (But alteast it's not M$) 7/4/11 9:20 PM
It still returned to www.sympatico.ca or www.sympatico.com, however after adding these two, as well, to the list above, I don't have their pesky crap on my screen, from  either of their sites, after signing out from my hotmail account.

Still, that doesn't answer the question, as to what or how it was circumvented.

So, working, but still stumped.

Isn't technology great? :)  When it works? :)
Re: how can i block a website?? ANOTHER ANNOYED USER (But alteast it's not M$) 7/4/11 9:21 PM
Almost forgot.. I cleared all cookies from these sites too!

So.. perhaps the HOSTS AND cookies should be used.. (that is cookies removed).

You can just not go to it or you can get the chrome nanny thing and put the website in it, it won't let you go on it. BLOCKED for good. :)
Re: how can i block a website?? ladyblade69 7/13/12 2:55 PM
I just downloaded SiteBlock from the Chrome Store and it was very easy to block a website. I have a problem with my 6 yr old going to youtube (that is no place for an unsupervised child) so I blocked it. VERY very easy.

It is best to use a complete parental control program like Qustodio from http://www.qustodio.com. Its free and blocks sites in real time, tracks data, and also monitors the activities kids engage in on social media sites. And its features are hard to find and even harder to disable should some super smart kid tried to play around with it. Everyone who cares about protecting their kids from the evils of the web should try it.

Tried that, won't let me as only Admin can do that - except I AM admin  :o?

*sigh*

I can open the file in Notepad, it just won't allow me to save in that folder (offers to save it in my docs instead)

Blocking websites. SuperGilligan 8/13/12 9:47 PM
I tried this before. It doesn't work with chrome. I need a way to block a specific website my sister is visiting that drives me crazy (howrse.com). Every time she visits it she loads my omnibar with hours of this howrse crap and I want to block it so that she is forced to use internet explorer (the less used browser) instead.
any help would be nice.
Thanks,
SuperGilligan

You right click on IE, go to options and add the site to the list of no load sites, its been an option since like Windows 95 was released.

Re: how can i block a website?? Luis Luis 11/30/12 8:26 PM
DOes ANYONE know how to get ritt off advertisements on the top of the youtube page
they are so annoying
I have google Chrome as my browser
but in my other browsers i  didnt have this problems
I hate it
does anyone know how to fix it
Re: how can i block a website?? KUW77 12/1/12 6:48 AM
You can get rid-off almost any pop-ups and annoying advertisements like the one you sound like you hate from You Tube.

The solution is Privoxy:
1-download it from there main web site www.privoxy.org/.
2- Install it.
3- Change the PROXY settings by following these steps:
-Click the menu symbol on the top right corner of chrome.
-Select settings.
-Click the Show Advance Settings at the bottom of the page.
-Click the Change Proxy Settings under Network.
-Click on LAN Settings.
-Un-check Automatically Detect Settings box.
-Check the first box under Proxy Server:
Type --> Address 127.0.0.1   Port 8118
-Un-check Bypass proxy server.... box
-OK twice
-Done

F.Y.I
1.Privoxy must start when starting Windows and should be among the start up programs in the start up folder.
2.If Privoxy blocks other known web sites, just choice in the blocked page "Try Again", and if that doesn't work, Dis-able Privoxy temporary by Right Clicking on the icon in the icon tray.

F.Y.I
All of these instructions are listed in Read Me Folder in the insulation folder of Privoxy.

Good luck and enjoy the freedom from add's, and pop-ups

Re: how can i block a website?? jenny G 2/24/13 5:53 PM
To block certain websites on your PC, here' s the trick (for Windows):

Step 1: Click the Start button and select Run. Now copy and paste the following text in that Run box:
c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Choose “Notepad” to open it.

Step 2: Go to the last line of the file, hit the enter key and type in the following format:
127.0.0.1 xxxx.com
Eg: If you want to block facebook.com and myspace.com
127.0.0.1 facebook.com
127.0.0.1 myspace.com

Step 3: Save the modified file

That’s it. None of the above sites can be visited on your computer.
One per line if you want to add more web sites.
In this way you can only block website one by one, if you want to block websites in large scale, you can use a professional web filter which will help you easily block websites by keywords or URL. http://goo.gl/QePcl

You can simply block a site by editing the hosts file, but I guess the easier way to block sites is to use a professional web filter, just block sites by url or keywords. http://www.aobo-porn-filter.com/web-filtering-tool.html
Re: how can i block a website?? Devon Malonson 5/1/13 11:54 PM
The stay focused add on is great. I adds a lot of options and even allows you to "nuke" websites for an allotted period of time. So if you want to make a website blocked forever just set the time for 999999999999999 hours and hit the button and it is forever gone >:D
Re: how can i block a website?? unione 5/13/13 7:49 AM
then do you just save it?
Re: how can i block a website?? Suzie_Q 5/15/13 7:59 AM
I managed to block a website through the extension AdBlock.
When you go to Options, then Customise, then Block an ad by its URL and you put the first link that appears when the pop up shows, as the link was changing afterwards so I couldn't block it. I used the first link which appeared and it's not poping up anymore.

Sorry, but I don't quite follow your lead.  Do I place it in my file like I see here.  My line with 127 looks like this:

#        127.0.0.1       localhost
#        ::1             localhost

Where do I place the link you mention?

Do I erase localhost and put it there, or just add it under the last line?

I am having a website initiate their site on my google browser without my asking.

Sorry I am not saavy.

what site are you saying not to go to? Nanny chrome or the scanner one in the original thread?
Re: how can i block a website?? Kiki perry 9/21/13 12:24 AM
I could not find BlockIt but based on description of how to do this and what generally to look for I did the following:
Click on "settings"
 "     "  extensions
search for Block site 2.1
 it is free ware
I installed it and then launched it
I inserted the tunafin site that was trying to open a page on my sleeping computer
and have blocked it.
I do not know how efficient it is until I leave my computer again  and see if the invasive site tries to open itself on my computer
Re: how can i block a website?? Kiki perry 9/21/13 12:26 AM
I could not find the BlockIt site.
I went to extensions and found Block site 2.1
installed it
then launched it and inserted the tuna fin site that keeps attempting to launch itself when my computer is sleeping
I will only know how efficient it is when I leave and come back to my computer
