Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! DiNDogs 2/8/10 2:11 PM
I have read other post about it and I have looked on the extensions but nothing like Mozilla's or IE's bookmarks sidebar.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! dwight.stegall 2/8/10 4:21 PM
i would love that too. but i'm sure they won't for security reasons
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mpoole32 2/15/10 7:14 AM
I've almost made the full time switch to Chrome. The largest missing feature for me is the inability to have vertical bookmarks. Tab-kit was the best in Firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5447. This developer has been slow to update his add-on for the latest version of Firefox. To get around this I recently had to switch to Tree Style Tabs https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5890. I would be nice if features found in Tab-kit were a part of Chrome instead of requiring add-ons.

I won't switch until Chrome has a Bookmarks Side Bar.  I have too many favorites to have them cluttered on the infinity bar
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Giraffe 3/2/10 4:47 AM
how is this a security issue?
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! gamesbrainiac 3/15/10 11:46 PM
I believe that a sidebar is necessary. I mean quite frankly it looks more organised. I really want firefox to beat google chrome, because firefox is free from any company, it is a open source software made by the people for the people. But they need to get faster. I think google can take a major stake if they put in a sidebar, and firefox can win a major stake if they can make it faster than chrome. I am not too worried about opera, I dislike the broweser, it is too complicated. But firefox was amazing, there is a bid fight with chrome, and once IE9 comes into the picture, things could get but.

But definitely, chrome needs a sidebar. It is far more organised, and helps browse better.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! bipbop 3/19/10 1:17 PM
I was going to migrate to Chrome from Firefox, but then I noticed that there is no bookmarks side bar. No extension for it either. I was sure something like this would be an easy option, but no. Deal-breaker for me. Back to Firefox.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mike-k 3/25/10 7:15 AM
I'm fine about the way chrome appears right now: lightweight, fast and easy-to-use web-browser! But the sidebar on the left, where I would see my bookmarks-tree would be a huge plus! thanks.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Mr. CookenBoo 3/27/10 3:52 PM
+1 for Bookmarks Sidebar. Also, make sure it has a toggle, like Opera's bookmark sidebar: just click the left edge of the browser window and the bookmarks sidebar pops open.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! bp.cara 4/1/10 2:48 AM
Another vote for a sidebar, but what are the chances that you could make it on the right side?  I personally like my tasks and stuff there.  I love being able to open my bookmarks in a right hand sidebar.  Main reason, I'm still using firefox.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! MetaEd 4/1/10 10:27 AM
The Bookmarks Manager gives you a vertical tree view of all your bookmarks. You can bring it forward with Ctrl+Shift+B. For people who want their bookmarks to permanently take up some screen real estate on the left or right hand side this is not a perfect solution, but it is worth a try.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! shoq 4/2/10 6:21 AM
I simply will not use Chrome, nor recommend it to thousands of my followers, without a sidebar for bookmarks. I have seen sidebars implemented, so i cannot understand the holdup.

You cannot even drag and drop to the current bookmark manager. As for "taking up real estate," as MetaEd discusses, that's absurd. I've been working that way for years. I will give up some real estate for the convenience of browsing my daily blogs, etc in a sidebar. It's the epitome of UI developer arrogance to tell  me how i should work.

How can you expect people with years of investment in using a browser in one way, with a set of features they love, to suddenly just drop those features because you want them to use your solution? You keep adding all this crap nobody will ever use, and ignore the MOST IMPORTANT FEATURES that everyone uses. It's just stupid. I have been waiting months for this.. and getting tired of it. It's starting to feel like chrome is one more big ambitious project that Google starts, and leaves in permanent SUCK LIMBO. Google docs, after several years, is still a Writely piece of crap that has take years to get as far as it has gotten, which is not far enough.  Will Chrome be another one?

I am sick of waiting for Google to care about what its users care about.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! glacia 4/4/10 10:17 PM
Lack of sidebar (either left of right side) is the only reason I (and everyone in my family and my company) cannot switch to Chrome. Firefox is slooooow, but I have to use it because it has the static sidebar which is necessary as one wants to check a list of bookmarks on a daily basis efficiently.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! General Knoxx 4/5/10 2:15 PM
The bookmarks bar is an abomination and a space waster for anyone that uses the web for something other than facebook and trolling chat rooms.

I use the web 14 hours a day for work; I currently have 102 unique folders in IE, like "Identity verification", "automotive", "locators",etc. I have over 2,700 current bookmarks - just how would the ill conceived horizontal bookmarks bar help? Monitors are wider than they are tall and most browsers use way too much valuable real estate at the top. That is one thing Chrome got right. The Bookmark Bar is just so much visual clutter of the sort that would make MAC users drool with glee. I am a person who likes streamlined efficiency.

Also, the "other bookmarks" drop down is a deal killer because:

1: No scroll bar.

2: No convenient way to re-sort the list - I do not need stray bookmarks mixed in with the folders...put them at the bottom, just like IE. AND, do not place a folder at the bottom because I forgot to capitalize it. Please do not defend this function by citing "rules of grammar" because a folder that starts "_XXX" should be at the top of the list, well before "XXX", which would be at the bottom. Google does not do that.

3: When scrolling, another box, showing the folder contents pops open and now HALF my 25" computer screen is obscured! WTF! Do not show me folder contents until I select the folder. I am an American and because American English is a derivitive of a Western European language, I am trained from birth, to read, and visually scan, from left to right. Boxes popping open to the left is, for want of a more elegant way of phrasing it, counter-intuitive and counter-productive.

4: I prefer to have the Favorites box always open and pinned to the LEFT side of the screen. I like to resize the width to about 1 inch so it is not intrusive yet all folder titles are legible ( see complaint #3).

I guess it all boils down to some folks like efficient, functional interfaces while some need "user friendly" interfaces, loaded with the latest bells and whistles; one that gives them the warm fuzzies. Some people insist they can only study with a radio or TV playing while others, like me, require a distraction free environment like a library.

After wasting 4 hours in forums trying to find solutions to the above issues, the Google evangelists just got under my skin.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! shoq 4/5/10 3:43 PM
A bookmark bar is handy for the few items you use all the time. But beyond that, I agree with most of what General Knoxx says. I have 4400 bookmarks.  I  consider them a major investment, and I totally RESENT Google assuming they know how i work bettter than I do.  If they don't add a real leftside bookmark pane soon, I am going to actively campaign against chrome on cultural purity grounds ;)
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! justflick 4/7/10 9:11 PM
Better yet, allow the sidebar to be customized so that bookmarks start stacking items/folders on the top or bottom and the active tabs start hierarchically stacking from the opposite vertical direction. What happens when space runs out is the hierarchies of tabs start collapsing to save room.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! shoq 4/8/10 5:58 AM
Google devs must think using their product is boring, or something.  LucD just posted a dev thread on his very issue going back to last september. It seems nearly everyone agrees that Chrome  is nearly useless without a bookmark sidebar, and still they add all this crap I don't use, and fail to add the one thing I MUST use.

I am sick and tired of google gobbling up every market, badly.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! LucD 4/8/10 8:07 AM
@shog
Wow, finally a comment that makes complete sense. You are so right, a simple REPLY or even the smallest amount of FEEDBACK from any Developer would suffice! Seems like this thread is completely put back into the dark. Is adding a sidebar something impossible for Chrome, or what-the-FUCK? I'm sorry for my harsh comments on all this, but being left in the dark without knowing what there's going to happen is kinda harsh aswell.

PLEASE, to any Developer, respond to this thread and give us an update. Hundreds if not Thousands will be happy with a single update! :)
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! tosione 4/11/10 9:34 AM
if no bookmarks sidebar, then no Chrome

Got this reply from some guy on another website:

Comment 17  by mkterra, Apr 08 (3 days ago)

This bug was marked WontFix a while back with the comment "Area for future extension
development."  I don't think any devs are CC'ed to it anymore.   Issue 12877  proposed
adding dockable sidebar support in general, but that too has been WontFixed in favor
of panels:

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mickf 4/12/10 10:27 PM
duh, same here.I thought I'd try chrome but then to find out it has no open favorites bar. and I've got a few hundred.

so after this email, i'm going to uninstall chrome,  sad....
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! LucD 4/15/10 1:09 PM
Let's not give up, there has to be a dev somewhere.. http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=20785
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! MetaEd 4/15/10 1:28 PM
According to this 3/31 article, panels will be dockable.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! LucD 4/16/10 4:54 AM
I'm not planning on installing a whole OS, we're talking about the browser itself..
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! MetaEd 4/16/10 5:17 AM
Sure, obviously, but the browser features such as bookmarks are going to be the same. ChromeOS and Chrome look the same because Chrome is the ChromeOS browser. So if bookmarks are going to dockable panels then we'll see that happen everywhere, not just ChromeOS.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! LucD 4/16/10 7:36 AM
Aha, like that.. well let's hope so! :) That would relieve me to be honest.. Thanks for the information, as soon as you know more please let us know!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! czecht 4/28/10 4:06 PM
I am NOT USING CHROME BECAUSE IT HAS NO FAVORITES ON THE LEFT SIDE!!!!!!!
I just checked it and same same old CRAPPPPPP so I am out to old IE! Take that to the bank GOOGLE people who DO NOT LISTEN TO US THE USERS!
How arrogant of you Google!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! MetaEd 4/29/10 8:33 AM
Arrogance means to lay claim to something for oneself without right. Claiming that we ("THE USERS") all wish Chrome behaved the way you personally wish it did, and therefore that you speak for us when you make your demands of Google, was an effective illustration of the meaning of arrogance. Thank you, @czecht! Arrogance also means self-importance, so your use of scorn, the repeat key, and LARGE TYPE to emphasize strongly Google's smallness and inferiority compared to you added a lot of clarity. In short, good job, you are the complete package! Cheers!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! LucD 5/3/10 1:12 AM
@czecht,
I would never ever express myself in a way you did, but I do know the feeling. Just relax a little bit, there are plenty of other browsers that do suffice for the time being.

@ontopic
I haven't heard anything about a bookmark sidebar anymore, anyone that could give us an update on this? Growing tired of Firefox! ;)
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! MetaEd 5/3/10 7:32 AM
There's a ChromeOS user interface demo here that gives an idea of how sidebars are currently working in the lab. A stable release of ChromeOS is supposed to come out the second half of this year. I am still hoping that user interface changes in the browser for ChromeOS will also show up in Chrome for Windows because they are the same browser. So second half of this year is the rough timeframe when I think we might see sidebars in Chrome for Windows.

Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You!

I keep downloading Chrome and installing it, hoping to find the good old sidebar. WHAT are you thinking?

Then I uninstall it again.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! LucD 5/18/10 12:12 AM
Same here.. :/ Wish they did something about this, really.. :/
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! reedster 5/26/10 9:30 AM
I'm with everyone else on this. Google has a great opportunity here to take some market share away from Firefox, which has become bloated. I have a Windows 7 machine and I now have to shutdown FF every couple of hours because it slows to a crawl. I really want to be able to use Chrome regularly but I can't without a Bookmarks Sidebar.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! LucD 5/26/10 9:38 AM
Again I have to agree with the last comment. I just got an email saying Google has officialy made Chrome v5.0 public to the masses. I already was running a later BETA version and KUDOS to the enormous speed gains. Google Chrome is without any doubt the fastest browser EVER on the market today!

BUT..
In good hope I installed this latest public version after uninstalling the BETA, and you can guess.. there was NOTHING what-so-ever that looked like a bookmark sidebar. I seriously have no clue why Google isn't doing ANYTHING about this! Just like @reedster said, Google Chrome can dominate the market even harder by having a bookmark sidebar. Unless Google is trying to play it smart again, and is willing to deal some kind of deadly-blow some day by adding such bookmark sidebar out-of-the-blue.

I'm left clueless here, if someone can give me a good answer on this, THANKS IN ADVANCE!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Tiziano Solignani 5/27/10 10:44 AM
I totally agree with LucD. I guess I am going to get back to firefox for the second time and stay there until a decent sidebar is made (even though an extension).

Thank you.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! shoq 5/29/10 6:09 AM
The newest release lets you put the bookmark manager in a tab.  That is STILL not a sidebar.
It would seem that until panels are released, we have no hope.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! LucD 5/30/10 6:55 AM
What exactly do you mean by panels? What are they and what do they do? :O

Uhh, don't give up your hopes! <3 Hopefully a new BETA release will surprise us.. ;)

I can't say it often enough, add a SIDEBAR! (L)!!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! LucD 6/30/10 11:24 AM
@SweRaider
Please don't include links, that's not allowed. And that site you mentioned: It gets blocked my my active Malware scanner.. :p

For the rest, I gave up on hoping that Chrome would become a superior browser. Developers simply do not respond to this, so it's useles..

For how long has this been going on now? Is there really nobody who can tell us when Google will come with a sidebar, if AT ALL?

I know this is a free product, and no I'm not pissed off.. but I never expected Google to lack support this hard. Even Microsoft has better support with an even bigger userbase, do not let us down Mr. Google!

LUV IS IN TEH AIRRR!!! <3
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Momonishiki 7/24/10 11:06 PM
Another vote for a permanent bookmark sidebar on the left side.

The lack of this feature is the only thing stopping me from dumping Firefox and switching to Chrome.

Yes, please add this feature or extension. It's the only reason I won't switch from Firefox to Chrome at this point.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! LynneMiles 8/5/10 1:04 AM
I agree, I have been using Chrome for a couple days and loving it. Just got around to exporting bookmarks from Firefox on my old machine and found there's no option for left-pane bookmarks. I really can't use a browser without this; I have hundreds of bookmarks sorted into folders and sub-folders which I use almost constantly. So I guess I'm back to FF, but I'm pretty sad about it.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! SweRaider93 8/5/10 5:05 AM
just download the bookmark tree extension and you'll have all your bookmark folders in a click away, not as good as sidebar, but it keeps you from changing browser, there are lots of other nice addons too
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Emiya Shirou 8/5/10 6:02 AM
HELL NO!! If they do it, i'm stopping using chrome, if they wan't to do it, make an option where do you want your bookmark sidebar, I wan't it always where is it now on top bellow address bar.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Emiya Shirou 8/5/10 6:03 AM
PS: I hate sidebars of all kind. I'm not on widescreen, and they take up to much space.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! LucD 8/5/10 6:05 AM
Look at Firefox, is that Bookmarks sidebar annoying or irritating? No, because it's a toggle.. you can enable and disable it whenever you want. So it won't waste up any of your precious space! ;) I don't get how you can hate it, it's just another feature!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! gamesbrainiac 8/12/10 1:40 PM
The All-In-One sidebar from Mozilla Firefox allows users to toggle the sidebar, and also auto-toggle it. This means that there is ample space for the person to browse, and with the new Firefox 4 coming in, the advantage will me that, it is faster (but not as fast as chrome) and also you can use the sidebar.

A dissapointment with Google Chrome is that they are not allowing this sidebar to come into its iterface, even though this would mean that it is a super fast version of Mozilla Firefox.

They even have a MHT file saver now, all they need, and desperately is a sidebar that works. Make it an extension, but it will be the best thing that happened for Google Chrome.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! taltamir 8/14/10 5:19 AM
@gamesbrainiac:
1. Firefox is not free from any company, it is owned by the mozilla corporation. However, it is released as open source, allowing people to compile their own versions and even release them under different names. (some do, google firefox 64 for an example)
2. Google Chrome is ALSO open source, check the chromium project... there is also a project which removes a lot of the google touches from chrome and releases it under a different name (google owns the chrome trademark, but the coder is open source and anyone can release it under a different name).
3. Mozilla's biggest source of income IS google. firefox comes with a default homepage of google (as well as some default links) which get them money. Every time someone makes a search via google via firefox via the default address: http://en-US.start3.mozilla.com/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official
if you use that instead of typing www.google.com you are making mozilla foundation money via google's advertising revenue.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! LucD 8/14/10 6:01 AM
Let's switch to SRWare Iron, I bet they will have a sidebar implemented ever sooner than Chrome has. While SRWare Iron is the same engine but faster, tested it myself. :)

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! willgolden 8/16/10 2:46 AM
Until Google Chrome has a bookmarks sidebar then Google is out of its depth in the browser market.  A bookmark sidebar is one of the 5 fundamentals on any browser page.  Without it re-visiting popular sites becomes infinitely more time-consuming.  Whoever designed the page has no understanding of the requirements of a browser.  It is not a case of when will it be available.  It is schoolboy stuff.  It is simply BASIC!  Such a performance would be unacceptable and met with a parting of the ways in any other industry!

The difference is, with Firefox being a co-operative, the people who take the decisions have genuine interests in its success.

Against that, Google is too big and its decision makers are not directly involved in the programming/systems design function. Its employees on the "shop floor" have no interest in whether the end-user is dissatisfied or Google successful or not as long as they themselves get their fat salary cheques.  Therefore I do not believe Google will ever take any notice of what its users need.

Neither do we help ourselves!  A paltry 162 users showing the gumption to make an issue of the bookmarks sidebar is quite inadequate as long as there are hundreds of thousands of losers out there who will just accept whatever rubbish is thrown at them. If Google can rely on these sheep, why would they need to even consider their more discerning users?

Forget"Delicious", simply the lack of intelligence to provide a basic toolbar is "tasteless"!  Until there is a radical turnaround in Google's structure, I shall be eating elsewhere.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! wjoyce 8/16/10 11:52 PM
I keep coming back to check out Chrome every few months and love its speed, but I simply cannot live without a bookmark sidebar.  Implement this and I'll switch without hesitation.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Pino Silvaggio 8/22/10 12:03 AM
As it stands right now, there are 2 huge problems with Chrome.

1- No Sidebar. This is a must and a show stopper.

2- The full URL doesn't get selected by double clicking on it. This is very annoying.

Try FF 4 betas... It is very promising. Fast and seem to be working great even as a beta.

However, Chrome seem to have better rendering, take for example, www.bestbuy.ca.
FF messes up the tabs and overlaps the search box.
Chrome is prefect.
There are tons of examples.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! anuoldman 8/22/10 12:43 PM
It's unbelievably absurd that Chrome is launching version 6 and it is STILL impossible to dock favorites / bookmarks on the left, or sort them from the context menu for that matter...

I don't get how such a capable development organization could continue to ignore such a fundamental user need that is so easy to provide and leaves them with a huge competitive workflow deficiency...

crazy.... headslap... back to IE

Google Chrome Issues: 45365, 20785, 30553, 12877

Google Developers are implementing a sidebar API soon. It shouldn't be hard to make an extension and use it with the Bookmarks API to create an extension.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! shallows 9/7/10 7:05 PM
I also would like a permanent side bar like IE...just switched over today and have searched for an hour for a sidebar bookmark extension but to no avail...this is a joke!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Rahabib 9/21/10 2:29 PM
new api makes this possible and it sooo close to working.  I can currently open the  bookmark manager in a new window, and then drag the favicon from the URL bar to the other window that contains my bookmark manager - and it works just as I expected.  All that is needed is to simply allow the bookmark manager to open in a side bar and you are done.

I love chrome, but I still use Firefox because I am an organized bookmarker.

I have a web page with a vertical list of links to all the sites I visit frequently. In FF, a bookmark to this page is loaded in a sidebar and I can get to any of the sites quick like a bunny by simply clicking on the link. Sweet. I would switch to Chrome today if it had anything like that. Fingers crossed.

I do believe i will join others and uninstalling Chrome until it has a full fledged sidebar.

The 'bookmark bar' is a nice gimick for 'saving real estate', but in practice i find it much too cumbersome for dealing with more than a handful of sites.

Dear Google Devs:
A missing left-had side bookmarks toolbar is preventing Chrome from really becoming successful.  With Chrome, _every_ new browser page to view takes an _extra_ mouse click, plus the "re-finding" of the correct folder takes more time.  If you have a boss who is adamant about the need for your current bookmarks scenario, leave it in and have a radio button selection for the left-side, always there bookmarks sidebar.

Your approach to this issue reminds me of a certain programming editor company which got sold a couple of years ago -- the new owners immediately redid the editor, removing "drag-and-drop" amongst other things!  They refused to put it back, insisting that copying to the clipboard and pasting was the best/proper way to work!  Two years on, I and others no longer use the product.  The product's previous owners understood programming and had produced a product which allowed for a smooth, efficient work-flow.  Get the picture?

Same is true for browsers.  No bookmarks sidebar seriously _impedes_ work-flow when using Chrome.

And please, don't relegate any eventual left-side bookmarks sidebar to an add-on -- it needs to be integrated within the basic product, done by the main programming team.

As an aside, since "day-1", Chrome has been touted for its innate speed.  The speed is fine to have, but without other key pieces of the design (like a bookmarks sidebar), the benefits of speed, in and of itself, becomes a moot point.

How much I would like it, I'm not going to use Chrome as long there is no sidebar for all of my bookmarks like in Firefox. Not obligatory, but optional. Please!

Google, PLEASE add a Bookmarks Sidebar! I love how fast Chrome is, and it's so much better than Firefox on the inside, but I can't function without a Bookmarks Sidebar.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 10/20/10 12:24 AM
I agree with democritus 1330 ; the only thing that prevents me from making Chrome/Chromium my default browser is the fact that I am unable to run my Delicious Bookmarks in a side panel, as I can in Firefox. I've been requesting this feature ever since Chrome - which I find a wonderful browser - was first released ; given that so many other users are also calling for it, I do hope the developers will lend us their ears !...

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Fromjim 10/27/10 10:50 AM
I have been waiting for Chrome to add a sidebar to quicker access or scroll bookmarks for almost a year, hard to believe it takes them this long to make a change they said they would do. I'll check every month or when I think of it, please keep asking for the change.

Thanks

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Lisze 10/28/10 8:56 AM
I need a (left side) bookmarks sidebar. It doesn't need to always be there, but I'd like to be able to toggle it on and off quickly.

(1) I have an extreme number of bookmarks organized into folders. I have far too many to use the bookmarks bar effectively.

(2) I strongly dislike having to constantly switch between the tabs I am reading and the bookmarks manager tab. It is inefficient and annoying.

(3) Drop-down folders do not work well when one has folders large enough to require scroll bars. This is one feature I gladly left behind when I downloaded the Firefox All-in-One-Sidebar extension.

(4) I have tried several times to switch fully to Chrome. I can now use nearly all my necessary extensions, but the lack of the sidebar sends me back to FF every time. My frustration with the lack of the sidebar overrides my reservations about FF every time (clutter at the top of the screen and speed, fwiw).

I sincerely hope that the developers address this issue. Chrome is, for me. unusable long-term without it.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! AlexNC 10/28/10 1:09 PM
i can not get myself to switch to Chrome until they add a dockable bookmak side bar. This is sad, because I use everything else Google makes ... but their current bookmark system is a deal breaker =(
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Ron Bovino 12/3/10 6:26 AM
Wow - truly is a deal-breaker with no sidebar extension.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mitchellvii 12/6/10 7:26 AM
The things about this that makes no sense are as follows:

1) The Community is SCREAMING for this.
2) Chrome's main competition (IE, FF) both have sidebars.
3) The technology exists, all they need to do is port it to Chrome.

This follows along the lines of:

"Why is there no Contact / Calendar integration in Google?" (i.e., Create an appointment from Contacts and link the two...)

Again, something everyone wants, easy to do, and yet, for some reason known only to Google, they REFUSE TO DO IT.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mitchellvii 12/6/10 7:51 AM
THE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM!!!!:

What you will need:

1) WinSplit Revolution (for automating the sizing of the browser window).
2) Google Chrome Browser (yeah, obvious, right?).

Ok, this is so easy it is scary:

1) Open your Chrome Browser.
2) Use Winsplit Revolution to size the browser to cover the left 2/3 of your monitor.
3) Right click on the Chrome Icon on your Taskbar and select "Open New Window".
4) Use Winsplit to size that to the right 1/3 of your monitor.
5) Open the Bookmark Manager in the right browser window.
6) Select a link and drag it to the address bar in your left window.
7) Voila, a Bookmarks Sidebar for Chrome!

P.S., You can also drag links from the left window onto the Bookmarks Manager in the right window to add links.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 12/6/10 8:08 AM
Winsplit Revolution is a useful tool, mitchellvii, but as far  as I know it only works with Windows OS. Many Chrome/Chromium users prefer other OS to Microsoft's products. Somehow I doubt that it is in the best interests of Google, which is in the process of developing and introducing its very own operating system, to require of us that we use Windows in order to obtain a side-panel function in its web browser ; not offering such an option is, in my opinion, a not insignificant tactical error. But I'm hopeful - it can often take an inordinate amount of time, but in the end Google often listens to its users. The more people that write in and request this feature, the sooner we are likely to get it....

Henri
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mitchellvii 12/6/10 8:29 AM
Lol, Winsplit Revolution is only to make it easier to size the windows.  You don't need it for this fix. Just size them manually.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 12/6/10 9:28 AM
Mitchellvii, when you've finished laughing, perhaps you might want to consider rewriting your instructions above, which explicity call for Winsplit Revolution to be used in order to size the split the browser window. After all, your intention was to help your fellow users resolve a problem, not to puff Winsplit Revolution ?...

Henri
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mitchellvii 12/6/10 11:08 AM
mhenriday:

"which explicity call for Winsplit Revolution to be used in order to size the split the browser window. After all, your intention was to help your fellow users resolve a problem, not to puff Winsplit Revolution ?..."

Lol.

1) Winsplit Revolution is FREE.  There is NO BENEFIT to me in "puffing" it's use.
2) I only recommended Winsplit Revolution because it is FREE and it WORKS, no other reason.  There are 10 other programs that can do the same thing.  If I didn't mention a program, people would be asking me if I could recommend a program that does this automatically.

Now my question to you is, did you actually TRY my solution (because it works) or did you spend all your time penning your silly response?  I am using this solution right now and it pretty much works exactly like a bookmarks sidebar.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 12/6/10 11:23 AM
I suggest, Mitchelvii, that in the future you refrain from characterising your fellow users' comments as »silly«, in order to keep the discussion civil and avoid an unnecessary descent into flame wars. I have nothing whatever against your recommending a programme which can serve as a temporary help to users, By the same token you must accept that I point out the limitations of that programme. Most of the posters here - including myself - strongly desire that Google provide a sidebar that can be toggled on aqnd off as a native feature in Chrome/Chromium ; my hope is that more users who desire such a feature will post here and that the developers will take notice....

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! girikome 12/13/10 9:55 AM
Bookmarking in Chrome is hard as hell compared to other browsers. On top of the lack of a sidebar, you can't even drag & drop a tab into a folder on the (horizontal) bookmark bar (the tab gets detached from the main window).
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Duncan Moore 12/14/10 2:13 AM
girikome, in this instance you can drag the icon from the omnibar (that's the icon to the left of the url) to the bookmarks bar instead.
I agree that bookmarking in Chrome is sub-standard though.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Roraima 12/14/10 5:22 AM
I wish IE was as fast I would go back to it in a split second. That's the only feature I see in Chrome is fast for the rest is way below IE8 by a long run! How annoying I have to use it for Windows 7 because IE 8 is too slow for it! Really annoying!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! curious1 12/15/10 12:52 PM
Just uninstalled Chrome as there is no bookmark sidebar.  I can't for the life of me figure out why this is the case.  Google?  I work on several sites, admin panels and more so need a sidebar to load different sites easily.  I would like to use Chrome, it feels very fast but the lack of sidebar kills it for me.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! richweiser 1/2/11 9:39 AM
I agree, Chrome is fast becoming my go to choice for web browser's, the lack of a sidebar for bookmarks is the only reason I continue going back to Firefox.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! jblsp 1/2/11 6:04 PM
Neat Bookmarks extension is not the solution.  It is better than the default Chrome confounding arrangement, but it is (1) NOT persistent (like a folder view) and (2) is on the right hand side (unless there's some way of moving it to the left that I have not yet found).

It is absurd that Google will not even consider the addition of a left-side sidebar in Chrome, and the lack of this function is the only reason that I still use Firefox as my primary browser---and will continue to do so until Google fully-bakes this Chrome product.

One more vote for the bookmarks sidebar here: I like Chrome but abandoned it (in favor of Opera) as an alternative to FF because Chrome has no bookmarks sidebar. However, I'm no longer having speed issues with the latest iteration of FF3.6, so it's a waning issue for me.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! akkha 1/17/11 1:03 AM
I NEED sidebar too !!! IE and FF have it but why Chrome doesn't ??? even no extension for this ???
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! AlexNC 1/17/11 3:06 PM
I found a good extension called 'Neat Bookmarks' that makes Chrome usable for me. Give it a try. Also, check the settings. There are a bunch that allow you to further customize the extension. It is not dockable, but at least the tree sticks, and remembers your last place.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! shoq 1/17/11 5:07 PM
AlexNC.. that Neat Bookmarks has been referred a few times.  It's one more developer's idea of a lame workaround. I removed it in 10 minutes. Sidebars have worked in browsers for over a decade. There is no reason chrome cannot have one. It's simply google being google, and I am really tired of it.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! muntoo 1/19/11 9:16 PM
Most of you guys are overreacting. Chrome is amazing, and it's bringing lots of new changes into the world of browsers. It would be nice of them to add a bookmarks sidebar, of course, but that's reason to refuse to use Chrome. Figure out new ways to do things, have an open mind. Eventually, you won't even need the sidebar.

I usually use the bookmarks bar (Ctrl+Shift+B), and if I want to look through past bookmarks, I search for them in the omnibox (if ever). If that doesn't work, I simply use the Bookmarks manager.

I am considering developing an extension for the sidebar (if I can) but you'll have to wait anywhere between a month or an year. (No guarantees.) http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=51084
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 1/20/11 12:10 AM
Muntoo, I agree that Chrome/Chromium is an excellent browser, and I certainly don't refuse to use it. But in my case, the convenience of having my 1100-odd Delicious bookmarks available in a sidepanel which I can toggle on and off is so great that I continue to use Firefox as my default browser. The question is not so much what users «need» (however that is to be defined) but what users desire ; if they, as the vast majority of those posting to this thread believe, do indeed desire a sidepanel option, Google might be advised to consider providing one in Chrome/Chromium....

Very much looking forward to seeing your extension !...

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! shoq 1/20/11 2:43 PM
Muntu? We're "overreacting" because we want a feature that has been part of every other browser since the late 1990s? Who are you, exactly, and why would we want to wait this indeterminate amount of time for you to bequeath us your solution. What are your other extensions that we might see?
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! muntoo 1/20/11 10:57 PM
@shoq
Well, you asked for it:

I'm a C++ programmer (probably about 30% of the average age of everyone here :P), and if you want, here's my StackOverflow profile [http://stackoverflow.com/users/365102/muntoo].
(Don't forget my other StackExchange sites [http://stackoverflow.com/users/365102/muntoo?tab=accounts] like Programmers, Math, etc. [Click on the bars with my avatar (currently with an "M" in it - I made it myself, and I intend on creating my own "calligraphical" font) in the link.])
[Also, the description needs a bit of updating, so I actually have more skills than that.]

Currently, I'm learning JavaScript, I have a good reference for HTML (MDN) so I don't need to memorize *every single* element and its properties out there. I'm going to learn CSS, soon...

As for overreacting, I'm referring to SOME PEOPLE WRITING IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS WHO ARE REALLY GETTING ON MY NERVES. TO THOSE PEOPLE: PLEASE STOP IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 [Obligatory 1 to be included after a long series of exclamation marks.]

What @mhenriday said is a much more diplomatic. No screaming [which means writing in ALL CAPS], and not swearing. Of course, I would like this feature too, but I believe Google is working on it [slowly]. IIRC, they're adding some API that will make it easier for extension developers to add this feature.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 1/21/11 12:16 AM
We might all do well to keep in mind Mark Twain's old adage - «It is difference of opinion that makes horse races». I'm with muntoo in reacting negatively to those who, whether by design or by accident, leave Caps Lock on when composing their postings. On the late lamented (of me, at least) Google Toolbar fora, it was helpful contributions of the type «GOOGLE TOOLBAR SUCKS !» that aroused my ire as TC. But perhaps muntoo went a tad too far when he wrote «[m]ost of you guys are overreacting» ; my impression of this thread is that the vast majority of the postings have been quite civil in tone. In any event, I look forward to both Google's and muntoo's efforts in this regard....

Another vote for bookmark (favorites) sidebar.  Two things I abhor:  1. unneeded extra mouse clicks, 2. scrolling.  With the new monitors being so out of whack on tall verses wide, every millimeter of vertical space is critical.  That's one reason why I chose Chrome. Having the bookmarks hog the vertical space is the reason I un-chose Chrome.  I guess I could click/select the bookmarks, but see thing #1.  A bookmark sidebar seems amazingly obvious.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 2/5/11 9:13 AM
Mmmg, I think that shoq was perhaps a little too pessemistic in his analysis ; my own impression is that Google does eventually come 'round when it dawns upon them that quite a large number of users do desire a particular feature. If we persevere in requesting a sidebar which can be toggled on and off, as in FF, then I suspect we shall eventually get one. If we drop the quest, however, nothing is going to happen....

Chrome is useless without a permanent bookmark side-bar that can host hundreds of bookmarks enabling fast scrolling etc..

For many people the bookmark folder/list almost acts as a shopping-list of things to see or check; this is impossible to do without such a permanent bookmark sidebar.

I cannot recommend Chrome to anyone with a serious collection of bookmarks - this is easy to fix; why wait Google ?

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Krysamon 3/17/11 11:51 AM
The lack of a bookmarks sidebar is the single most irritating thing about Chrome, and is likely to drive me back to Firefox. Period.

I'd love a sidebar as well, but recently got fed up with Firefox so will put up with Chrome's use of bookmarks for now.  It isnt terrible, but not that great either.

Please add the option or create an extension.  It'll take one of your PHDs about an a half hour to develop.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! cettels 3/23/11 10:06 AM
I just downloaded Chrome to try it again but alas the same reason exists for me to uninstall it.  Without the sidebarfor bookmarks on the left I can not work efficiently.  Funny so may people have been asking for it so long and I don't see any comments from anyone at Google.  I imagine MANY others just uninstall without even bothering to comment.  It seems like with all these requests for so long now the lack of a sidebar for bookmarks would be addressed.  I think I am heading back to Firefox too.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! tysonology 3/24/11 9:23 AM
Still waiting, just upgraded to FF4. i'll keep checking back on Google Chrome and hopefully i'll one day be able to switch all of my computers over to it. Its not that i cant deal without it, its that i wont deal without it. i have a 27 inch screen and a lot of bookmarks that i keep on the left side of my browser because i'm a web programmer and stuff like that is needed to get around easy. This browser just isnt for the technical guys.  Get more customization, some greasemonkey, and more extensions and then you will have a load of new tech geeks and their clients merging over. I promise. We shouldnt have to jailbreak and hack everything, especially something this simple.

I just want to add my voice to all the others above: without a bookmark sidebar, Chrome will not be my default browser.
Come on Google, there are four pages of comments all on the same topic. Answer us!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! cell.manny 4/6/11 7:12 AM
While we are waiting for Google to react, here is a simple solution:

1) Open two Chrome Browser windows and place them side by side. The left windows will be the Bookmark Sidebar, the right window will be the browser. Resize them so they fill your screen.
2 In the left window, go to Bookmark Manager and resize the columns to fit you needs.
4) To open a bookmark, drag & drop it from the left window into the address bar of the right window.
5) Voila! slow & cheap bookmark sidebar. Slow because you have to open and resize the two windows every time, and because the drag&drop adds a few seconds to the operation.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! shoq 4/7/11 12:28 PM
Cell Manny.

Respectfully, your suggestion is truly one of the dumbest things I have ever seen in this thread. But at least you didn't suggest I export them and import them. That's a plus.

I'm chiming in. Just searched extensions for one and couldn't find it, and now that Firefox is decent again, I'm thinking of switching back to in part because it has a vertical bookmarks pane and Chrome does not.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! UzzaNuzza 4/20/11 8:37 AM
Chrome has great debugging capabilities for developers and while I launch to Chrome from Visual Studio I still use Firefox for ALL other browsing activities. I won't switch until Chrome decides I am worthy of controlling my own browsing experience.

Screen manufacturers have blown up horizontal space, for movies I'm guessing, while reducing the vertical space useful on the web.  I'm not sure how much more obvious it can be that a 'side bookmark' feature might be a valid use of normally wasted space as opposed to stealing my always scrolling vertical space.

My guess is that they have 40 versions of a side bar but some project manager doesn't see it as part of the chrome 'vision' so every body on this thread should get lost.

Its a browser war out there so just ride with whatever browser gives you the most control.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 4/20/11 8:55 AM
UzzaNuzza, at the moment I have four different browser versions installed on my main (Ubuntu) system, and choose among them according to my needs. However, I still use FF 3.6.18pre as my default, as it is the only one of the four that allows me to display my Delicious Bookmarks in a sidebar, something I find indispensible. But Chrome/Chromium is much quicker than this version of Firefox (as are, it should be admitted the FF nightly builds that I also have installed, but which, alas, are not compatible with the bookmarks), so I'm hoping against hope that some Google developer, after following this thread, will succeed in convincing his or her manager to give users what they want....

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mitchellvii 5/2/11 5:21 AM
As far as I can tell, Google has gone in the opposite direction with their latest release.  Apparently, there is NO WAY TO ACCESS BOOKMARKS AT ALL unless you go to the separate bookmark page.  I mean seriously, who the heck at Google thinks this is a good idea?  Oh yeah, the same guy that thinks we need NO CONTACT/CALENDAR INTEGRATION at all.  Yeah that guy.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mitchellvii 5/2/11 5:25 AM
Here's the weird part.  Google could easily do this.  Every other browser does it.  Everyone wants it.  It is the single reason millions more don't use Chrome.  And yet, they insist on not including it.  Just to be cool and different?  To intentionally walk away from dominating the browser market over something so stupid and easy to implement?

P.S., Google, while you are out it, allow me to link to Contacts from within Calendar.  Right now, the only way I can add Contacts to a Calendar event is by typing in email addresses from memory?  Are you kidding me?  Uber, mega, master fail.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! zack832 5/4/11 12:49 AM
I like chrome, I want to use Chrome, I want to recommend Chrome, but I simply can't and wont for the simple lack of a sliding bookmark sidebar.  If I can't have something like All in One Sidebar from FireFox I simply wont use Chrome in any form.

Google can be as stubborn as they like, I can to.

Well, my venture into the world of Chrome just lasted about 20 minutes. The very first thing I went to do was add my bookmarks in a side bar and when I was trying to figure out how to do so, I stumbled across this thread. So it's back to Firefox for me.

Check out the Neat Bookmarks extension.

It's not exactly a "sidebar" (it's not "docked"), but it works.

I want to put my vote in too for a bookmarks sidebar. I love the speed of Chrome but it's just not viable for me without the sidebar that I use in FF. It's the ONLY reason I haven't switched!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! dbobdead 6/12/11 10:01 AM
I'm adding my vote to all the above.  Chrome is practically useless w/o a bookmarks sidebar.  I have hundreds, if not thousands of bookmarks maybe 3/4 of which are related to projects or systems and are organized into folders, subfolders, etc.  It's just impossible to work with all the drop-down menus and crap.  Don't get me wrong, I like Chrome, it's fast, clean, and seems stable.  I use it sometimes when I know I'll be spending some time on a site, or streaming video, but, until there is a better bookmark system I guess I'm stuck with FF.  I'm even willing to put up with Chrome's limited tool-bar buttons...but that's another story.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! shoq 6/15/11 8:26 AM
This has become a gesture of futility. Apparently the geeks at Google feel a separate window or tab is all you need for your bookmarks. Another case of nerds deciding for the rest of us. Perhaps Larry Page will bring a new focus on USABILITY to this famously poor software company.

seriously , still not a sidebar ?? google , please stay on top of your game , there 's enough horizontal screensize going on these days , why not just add it ??
so we can drag our bookmarks to the left side , folders are easy to organize , have you guys ever opened a browser named "firefox" , i suggest you try it and learn from it , i would be the first to use chrome , the only reason why not is this stupid sidebar issue , add it please
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! tmcgonegal 6/26/11 8:57 AM
I echo all of the above. If Google would say SOMETHING, even if it's a negative, at least we would know why they are refusing to add a left sidebar.

I too am anxious to use Chrome, have installed many versions, and have uninstalled as many.

Derp. Try typing "about:flags" into your chrome URL bar, and click enable on the side-tabs option. It is at the top.
Then right click on a tab in chrome and click "use side tabs".

Disco!

TheALCH, I've just done as you suggest above in Chromium 14.0.807.0 on my 64-bit Ubuntu box, which opens the «chrome://flags/» tab ; however, no side-bar flag is to be found in the long list of experiments displayed there. You couldn't perhaps post a screenshot, to help others and myself to locate this elusive flag ?...

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! denis_y_s 6/30/11 7:15 AM
"use side tabs" - all it does is places open tabs on the left side of the browser instead of the top and it is nothing to do with the Bookmarks. So this change is not a solution at all.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 6/30/11 8:17 AM
Denis_y_s, thanks for posting ! On my setup, «use side tabs» is not to be found. And, as you point out, even if it were, it still wouldn't resolve the problem being discussed on this thread...

I would also add that the ONLY thing keeping me from using chrome full time (because it is a nice browser) is the lack of a bookmarks sidebar. Is this impossible the way chrome is coded or something? Why should this be so hard?

If you want to really make my day you will also allow vertical tabs. If you haven't noticed most screens are widescreen these days so using that extra horizontal real estate while conserving vertical space should be every developers goal!

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! bruzy 7/11/11 9:11 AM
Web designers are taught one major rule when they begin creating content for the web... the less clicks to get to your information the better. The more clicks it takes, the more frustrating it is to use. Chrome is a perfect example of the latter. A drop down menu on the top right side of the screen for browsing bookmarks is just plain stupid and inefficient.

I have hundreds of bookmarks categorized in many folders and sub folders as I'm sure thousands of web users do as well. Why is it so difficult to incorporate an option to bring up a docked bookmark sidebar? It's simple code. Get your shit together Google...
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! davidmac27 7/17/11 9:23 AM
100% agree on a side bookmark bar for Chrome.  I have 100's of bookmarks in dozens of folders.  It is just plain stupid and nearly impossible to use the drop down menu approach.  I also installed the bookmark icon which with one click gets you to the bookmark page.  Still too many stupid steps.  If Google were serious about this browser game, they would add a sidebar.  It is the single feature that is keeping me away.  I think Google engineers must only have a dozen bookmarks... :)

The developer version of Google Chrome has an experimental sidebar feature. This feature lets Chrome and Chrome extensions create sidebars. Developers of Chrome extensions are being asked to try it and give feedback to the Chrome development team.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! danielswain2 8/4/11 11:19 AM
I've got to say...the lack of a sidebar bookmarks menu--as exists in EVERY other major browser--is the ONLY reason that has held me and my colleagues back from fully adopting Chrome for everyday use. I much prefer Chrome in every other way: it's faster, cleaner, less of a system hog, and just works better in general, but until a sidebar bookmarks menu comes along (either built-in or as an extension), there is no reasonable way to get work done in Chrome. I just wanted to add to the many pleas already out there: PLEASE, for the love of god, add or allow for the developer creation of a sidebar bookmarks menu!!!

Note: MetaEd's post from 7/20 is encouraging. Hopefully the experimental sidebar feature can be implemented very soon!

@mhenriday Yes, Ovid is right, dripping water will hollow a stone eventually. Unfortunately the forums are user-to-user and not consistently monitored by Google employees, so this conversation may be hollowing the wrong stone. It may be more helpful to go to the Chromium website and post or vote for a feature request.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 8/12/11 12:24 AM
Thanks, MetaEd, for your comments on the nature of these Google-service user forums! You are, alas, quite right in that Google employees do not regularly monitor these fora - for example, I have never seen a Google employee comment on this particular thread, despite its place under the «Suggestion» forum. I have taken the liberty of bringing the discussion here to the attention of Google employees on another forum which they - and Chrome TCs - do regularly monitor, but hitherto the response has not been overwhelming. You suggest that proponents of a Chrome/Chromium sidebar post on the Chromium browser website (http://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org/group/chromium-discuss/topics) ; unfortunately, after perusing several of the threads requesting a sidebar, I must draw the conclusion that the inclination shown by Google employees to respond to the suggestions is on a par with that we have seen here. Perhaps we should continue to let the drops fall here ? So far we've accumulated some 186 !...

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! aimango 8/14/11 8:08 AM
As many others in this thread, the lack of a bookmarks sidebar is one of the main reasons Im still using FF. TBH, I hate FF. It freezes and lags and takes forever to start up sometimes (both 3.6 and 5.0 have been giving me uber fails this week). But FF has a really large range of good add-ons that make my browsing experience that much better (well, minus the lag). The lack of a status bar is also why I dont really like Chrome, and all of the extensions I DL on Chrome get placed on the top nav bars, which gets crowded if you ask me.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! rstriker 8/14/11 7:16 PM
The first post on this subject was on 2/8/10, that was 18 months ago.  There is still no bookmarks sidebar.  Does anyone else get the idea that no one who can answer this question is listening.  The extent to which I use Chrome currently is to occasionally check the most current version to see if the sidebar has been added.  When that has happened, then I will decide if the rest of it is worth replacing Firefox.

Just installed Chrome, I "thought" I needed a bookmark sidebar, but I dragged the "imported from Firefox" folder to the left most position, renamed it "Bookmarks", and all is well.  Clicking it gives you a left sidebar (not docked, but who cares).  I have over 200 bookmarks in about 25 folders, and this seems to work just as well as Firefox did.  Chrome does seem faster than FF.

@ JackyH  too many steps, too hard to navigate!!! We need a simple Bookmarks Sidebar! I can't use Chrome until Bookmarks Sidebar is implemented! When would it be fixed???
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 9/23/11 7:05 AM
Jacky, really nice to see you posting to this thread - if I haven't missed something you're the first Google employee to do so, despite the fact that the thread now comprises over two hundred postings !...

The problem is that neither of the alternatives found under «Bookmarks» in the spanner menu resolve the problems described by (would-be) Chrome users here : «Shift+Ctrl+B» toggles a horizontal bookmarks bar off and on, while «Shift+Ctrl+O» (to which I presume you were referring) opens a new tab with a vertical Google Bookmarks Manager panel, which cannot be toggled off by repeating the keystroke, but rather has to be closed in the usual manner. In my case, the panel, has eleven (11) «Imported from Firefox» folders, and a single «Imported from Del.icio.us» folder, which latter dates back to 2009-11-20 and which I can find no way to update - the only imports which seem to be allowed are from Firefox (as tested on both Chrome 14.0.835.186 and Chromium 15.0.871.0 (Developer Build 99583 Linux) Ubuntu 11.04)....

What I - and if I understand aright, most of my fellow posters here - are requesting is a simple side panel which can be toggled on and off using «Ctrl+B» or some similar command and on which one's choice of bookmarks - in my case Delicious, which I've found to best suit my particular needs - can be displayed. Any chance that we can get that on Chrome ? Until such a service can be provided, while I shall, of course, continue to use Chrome/Chromium from time to time, various versions of Firefox will remain my default browser, despite the other advantages that Chrome offers....

Henri

PS : For those wondering how one can get Delicious bookmarks to work with Firefox versions 6.x and above, the answer is the «Add-on Compatibility Reporter» add-on (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/). Great tool - with it, not merely Delicious bookmarks but even such extensions as Google toolbar for Firefox can be made to work with FF, even with the nightly builds (currently 9.0a1 (2001-09-23))....

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Nikaas 9/23/11 11:14 AM
Sidebar can even not use any vertical space if it's implemented like Firefox's "All-In-One Sidebar". You move your mouse to the left edge of the screen and sidebar auto-appears, and the moment the mouse leave the sidebar area its auto-hidden. Until that kind of sidebar is in Chome I don't see myself even consider using it. I'm too used to do the most common operation in a browser(reach bookmarks) with zero clicks.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! viprec 9/24/11 7:29 AM
It drives me nuts that this has not been implemented yet but for those willing to compromise, there's a neat extension called "neatbookmarks." It features a popup with your bookmarks that can be configured to stay open after each click.

You gotta go with what you have an it's the closes thing to a our well sollicited side bar :-(

See video below.

Hope this will help some of you.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! sholomar 9/29/11 12:10 PM
a fixed sidebar, on the left side of the page, is the only thing keeping me using firefox yet. I will not move over until this is implemented. Being a right handed person, I like my menus on the left side, and having a widescreen monitor, I want to use the extra space not needed by the frequent use of my bookmarks. Stubbornness for the sake of change is shortsighted. Give users the option.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! gotham77 10/7/11 10:02 AM
Hey Jackie, why don't you cut the you-know-what already? You know that wasn't what we were asking for. And we all know that what we're asking for would be very simple to implement. It's rather obvious that you simply refuse to give us what we want because it's not what YOU want, and instead of giving users what they want you're going to TELL US what we should want, which basically means that you're now the "new Microsoft." You're being stubborn for no good reason at all.

I like the way Firefox looks with the sidebar. That's what I want. And I guess it wasn't enough for you to refuse to include it in Chrome...you've also stopped supporting the Google Toolbar in Firefox! So you're basically punishing us for not using your browser, while at the same time refusing to design your browser according to our requests.

There are whole books written about this topic and why it's bad business management. You're going out of your way to alienate end-users for no reason at all. And your smug attitude about it is only that much more infuriating.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! zden2 10/7/11 3:48 PM
Using ChromePlus with integrated modified Neat Bookmarks plugin positioned within the sidebar, that can be fixed, seems to be more than satisfactory solution to me... I found it after 2 hours looking for something like that

at http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/802/chromplussidebarbookmar.png/ you can check how it looks

BTW as you see in the screenshot ChromePlus even works with both xmarks plugin and windows 8 developer preview... Neat Bookmarks within the sidebar is refreshed in realtime after syncing xmarks

my next step is installing this solution on the rest of my computers...
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 10/8/11 3:22 AM
Thanks for your post and the screenshot, zden2 ! But alas, the Neat Bookmarks extension doesn't work quite the same way in Chrome/Chromium - after installing it there one is plagued with the lack of a (left-hand) sidebar. Rather than installing Chrome Plus, the latest version of which is based upon an old (5.0) version of Chrome, the solution that a majority of the posters to this thread are requesting is a sidebar which can be toggled on or off in Chrome/Chromium. So long as such a sidebar feature is not provided there, Firefox with the «Add-on Compatibility Reporter» is a simple alternative which allows me to use my Delicious bookmarks in a manner which suits me very well. But I fail to understand why the Chrome/Chromium developers should be interested in, even if passively, encouraging would-be users to use Firefox. Perhaps Jackie could explain why Chrome seems to be so unwilling to provide us with a sidebar, something which hardly is beyond their power....

I think it isn't really that bad with the chrome up-to-dateness, mhenriday...

according to user web agent my chromeplus released on september 30th 2011 says Chrome/12.0.742.122 Safari/534.30 ChromePlus/1.6.3.1 while my chrome says Chrome/14.0.835.202 Safari/535.1 ...

nowadays a new chrome version is released every few weeks so i guess it's not a big deal...

according to chrome://about in chrome and chrome://version in chromeplus WebKit version used is 535.1 and  respectively 534.30

anyway i understand that it's not very comfortable not to use the latest version

using chromeplus is like taking the best from both americans and chinese :)) just like buying iphone is :))

An excerpt from Steve Yegge's famous Google Platforms Rant (https://plus.google.com/112678702228711889851/posts/eVeouesvaVX) may help us understand why those responsible for the Google Chrome browser are not allowing developers to heed this widely demanded and technically simple request :

«You know how people are always saying Google is arrogant? I'm a Googler, so I get as irritated as you do when people say that. We're not arrogant, by and large. We're, like, 99% Arrogance-Free. I did start this post -- if you'll reach back into distant memory -- by describing Google as "doing everything right". We do mean well, and for the most part when people say we're arrogant it's because we didn't hire them, or they're unhappy with our policies, or something along those lines. They're inferring arrogance because it makes them feel better.

But when we take the stance that we know how to design the perfect product for everyone, and believe you me, I hear that a lot, then we're being fools. You can attribute it to arrogance, or naivete, or whatever -- it doesn't matter in the end, because it's foolishness. There IS no perfect product for everyone.

And so we wind up with a browser that doesn't let you set the default font size. Talk about an affront to Accessibility. I mean, as I get older I'm actually going blind. For real. I've been nearsighted all my life, and once you hit 40 years old you stop being able to see things up close. So font selection becomes this life-or-death thing: it can lock you out of the product completely. But the Chrome team is flat-out arrogant here: they want to build a zero-configuration product, and they're quite brazen about it, and Fuck You if you're blind or deaf or whatever. Hit Ctrl-+ on every single page visit for the rest of your life.»

There may, of course, be other explanations, but I must confess I'm hard put to imagine one that fits the circumstqances better....

One Year ... 8 Months ... 13 days ... No Sidebar?

This is a ridiculous amount of time to not even hear an answer/response from a Google rep (or Support Staff). I know Google Engineers are famous for not reading blogs/complaints/forums/account issues/etc. but come on ... Hire a team to read them then.

Someone explain why a sidebar is not useful, or at least why it can't be an option. Google is getting very ANTI-options. If Google's engineers are so good ... I should be able to:

* Add an icon to the main bar (ohh, to have a print icon?)
* Right Click to customize Chrome bars (how many people use Open All Bookmarks?)
* Put the tabs on the sides or at the bottom (not sure why ... but some people want it?)
* Display a permanent Status Bar on bottom/top/sides ... wherever (see other things than link locations, why?)
* Swap an icon for another (it's not like they don't already exist somewhere, right?)
* everything else that more than 1000 people want in the forums ... OPTIONS

I get not making these features "defaults" but why would making things optional add so much code that the browser becomes unstable/insecure?

... Idea ... a button next to "Reload" that displays up the same way clicking a folder on the "Bookmark Bar" does, but that you can then pin in place. Minimal, Efficient ... Googley??

What else can I say: Pleeeeeease Google, give me a sidebar for my bookmarks. Don't try to induce me, that sidebars are old-fashioned or somehow not practical for me. I want to decide on my own.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Badmagic 11/6/11 10:53 AM
So, its been around for some time now, I can't believe this is still the situation, I like many tried the browser a long time ago and due to this one problem had to un-install it as fast as I could, I've just installed the current version and finding nothing changed and no way to have a proper functional bookmark/history side bar.

With firefox 4's horrendous memory leak I would have though they would really be trying to bring chrome up to speck as an viable replacement but as it stands its basically useless to me so I'm still stuck on FF3, anyone got a real alternative?  I used to like Opera but haven't used it in a long time.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! ses101 11/8/11 3:06 PM
Just to say I agree with everyone here that wants a fixed bookmarks option.  Everything else is great - Chrome seems more reliable and faster than firebox, and I abandoned IE years ago because of problems with viruses and pop-ups.

When you have near enough a 1000 bookmarks like me, a bookmarks section on the left of the screen like the others have is virtually essential.  Please look into this Google, please!!!

A browser without a bookmark sidebar is a cripple. I'll switch back to Firefox! Good bye, Google.

Wow, talk about being ignored for a loooooong time. I switched form FF because it became too slow, crashed every few minutes, and it lacked some GMail friendliness I needed. But no bookmarks sidebar? Major setback.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! 30foldinc 11/17/11 7:31 PM
Who's issue is this to address? Is it a Google Chrome issue, or should we be banging on Delicious' door? I also use iMacros which has a sidebar. They now have a floating window - which also has major drawbacks, but works to some extent.

Omg Chrome 15 but no bookmarks sidebar? This is last thing i need.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Nikaas 11/22/11 12:37 PM
There is a browser based on Chromium (Chrome is too Chromium based) that HAVE SIDEBAR build into it. It's called ChromePlus and you can download it from http://www.chromeplus.org/ . ChromePlus adds some other useful features beside sidebar, such as Mouse gestures and IE tabs. There is Chrome addon that comes included and acts TOTALLY the same in ChromePlus the way All-In-One-Sidebar in Firefox - sidebar can be set to auto-hide/show on mouse over. Most of you probably know this addon "Neat Bookmarks", but it acts differently in standard Chrome.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! BMSideBarPlz 12/2/11 4:55 PM
I have installed Chrome at least 4 times and I always uninstall for one reason, and one reason only. NO SIDE BAR for bookmarks. I love using chrome, there is a reason why their market share has overtaken firefox... but for me, not having a bookmark sidebar is akin to driving my car without a steering wheel... I simply cannot do it.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 12/3/11 4:57 AM
BMSideBarPlz, I have both Firefox and Chrome/Chromium (and Opera, as well !) installed on all my boxes and use them all according to my needs and whims, but the lack of a customisable sidebar in Chrome/Chromium is what keeps me using FF versions as my default browser. Pity that the Chrome/Chromium developers don't seem to be interested in addressing this matter....

I'm just adding my vote to all those before me. Please add a bookmarks sidebar. This won't be my primary browser without that as a feature.

I don't believe it. I think I give up on coming here now and then to see if the sidebar has finally arrived..
No sidebar, no Chrome!

It's the only thing that keeps me using FF.

Come on guys, lets have a sidebar for bookmarks.......Been using FF for years and a pal said why not give Chrome a go again.........just done that, took me 2 minutes to realize there's no sidebar.......so am installing it again.

I'm a hardware/software developer and it frustrates me to see other developers NOT implementing what is clearly a well requested feature.

Ian.

One more vote for a bookmarks sidebar.  It is the only reason I'm not using chrome as my regular browser.  I really want to like Chrome but lack of a bookmarks sidebar is a show stopper for me.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! marco-jay 12/15/11 2:25 PM
Another vote for a bookmarks sidebar in Chrome. I have Chrome installed on my PC but find myself consistently defaulting to Firefox because I like having all my bookmarks in plain view and easily navigable via the sidebar's scroll-bar or via the mouse wheel. It's strange that the Chrome developers are so resistant to this feature and so unresponsive to the needs of numerous users.

Bookmark sidebar (left side please) NOW. NOW. NOW. NOW.  Can't use Chrome until you do!

please add the bookmark sidebar.
this lack of a sidebar and the fact that i can not customize the location of my back and forward icon as well as the refresh icon is a strange oversight by the chrome team.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Kartik88 12/16/11 10:43 PM
Yes bookmark management is something google chrome should work on. It is easy to add a bookmark but it is very tedious task to find it especially scrolling through different folders. The UI is very lame here. But not necessarily the side bar is the answer. They are used since years but that does not mean they are a standard. Google chrome guys can come up with something better than sidebar more interactive and intuitive ui for bookmark management just as they came up with circles in google+. If they would have asked suggestions on the solution to friend management then ppl would only have suggested better groups not circles. Same here, chrome guys now know the problem and they must come up with a disruptive solution to it. Looking forward to better bookmark management soon. I like circles and how friends can be managed using circles and suggest something like that kind of ui or even better for bookmarks.

It makes me sad that this seems to be one of the most requested features and Google hasn't made any progress in implementing it.

This seems like Nested Folders in Gmail problem v2.0 :-\ (or maybe with the way Google pushes builds, its more like v58.78?)
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 12/20/11 6:27 AM
Kartik88, there may, indeed, be better ways to display bookmarks than in a sidepanel which can be toggled on and off according to one's needs, but until such time as an ûber-creative Google employee invents that good five-cent cigar, convinces his or her team at Google, and we users have been vouchsafed it, it would be seemly if Google were to accede to the wishes of literally hundreds of requesters to whom such a feature is sufficiently important to motivate them to post on this thread. It should not be a task beyond the developers powers ;Firefox code, after all, is open and free to use, and a solution - until something better comes along - could be lifted from there....

Chrome/Chromium users interested in this issue might want to note the comment (#50) by pkas...@chromium.org on the Chromiun Issue 51084 thread (http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=51084), in which, among other things he/she writes :

«...
Accordingly, I'm morphing this bug to be about the broader issue of finding some way to accommodate the use cases of people who use bookmark sidebars in other browsers.  This makes it clear that even though we're going to remove the unfinished current work we still want to tackle this problem.
...»

I don't quite know how to call this - the optimist in me wants to take it as an indication that developers are aware of the desire for a sidebar option in Chrome/Chromium and intend to take it seriously, while the cynic says that nothing will come out of it. Let us see what the new year brings !...

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! jroack 12/22/11 12:45 PM
The Chrome format for bookmarks is much too primitive for managing my thousands of bookmarks.  The sidebar in Firefox was so much more convenient for managing and rapidly accessing my bookmarks.  Searches for desired bookmarks were instantaneous and accurate.  One could switch from the first folder in the Bookmarks folder to the last in a flash.  No so in Chrome.  Also, the number of bookmarks I have consumes much more memory in Chrome than it did in Firefox.  As a result it slows the Chrome browser down to a snail's pace with frequent freezing of the program.  Chrome requires more development and refinement.  Back to Firefox for now until this is resolved.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! kackburt 12/23/11 7:21 AM
I want that feature too! The bookmark pane is the only reason I stick with Firefox.

Most displays use 16:9 or 16:10 nowadays, there's no reason to put the bookmark bar on top :q

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! jawtab 1/1/12 3:55 PM
I use the Firefox's bookmark manager with chrome.  Works well enough!

you must click and drag to open and add but other than that a perfect blend.  I do prefer the single column bookmarks on firefox (CTRL B) vs. the manager.  So may switch back to firefox.

Oh also their TAB GROUP system is dope.  I use multiple windows with multiple tabs a lot.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! jawtab 1/1/12 3:57 PM
oh on a side not any browser needs both.  in Firefox you can't select a group o bookmarks on the bookmarks sidebar but can on the bookmark manager.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! HayabusaJames 1/28/12 9:51 AM
The manhours required to make a side bar for book marks is virtually zero.  So that leads me to believe there's someone who just feels bookmark tree views are bad and goes against the direction they are headed.

It's frustrating cause I am a big supporter of Google products but 2 things keep me from using Chrome, and every 6 months I reinstall to check if they are improved.  Bookmarks, and auto clearing browser data.

Personally, I don't care how fast it renders, we are splitting hairs on that one (diminishing returns).  WiFi is more the bottleneck yet we still choose it over hard line connect.

But when you have an organized 1000+ bookmark library, you don't want to lose that. I set up links to go to specific pages within sites, so the "just use google search to find your favorite site" is not at all an option. Besides, its way too many key presses and clicks to get to what I want by searching.  It just becomes a slow and painful UI experience without a bookmark tree.

As a UI guy, we like to say "even grandma can use it"... that's great.  But the greater challenge is to ALSO make something that the power users want to use.  It's not easy to make something simple to use, but its significantly more challenging to cater to the power users as well.

Kudos to those on the rendering side of the development.  Shame on the UI decision that makes the overall experience slow and painful.  Those decision makers took away all those rendering improvements.  How dare you do that!

The fact is, I am writing this from firefox, because I can't stand to browse without my bookmark tree on the side of the page.  I'll switch when the browsing experience is not so painful and slow.

Google makes great stuff otherwise though!  :-)

HayabusaJames, Well said (I said, from Firefox)

This entire issue is a textbook case of hubris by vendors who don't have to care.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! DirkGently1 2/14/12 1:02 AM
I completely disagree, and do NOT want to lose screen real-estate to a permanent side-bar. I'd simply prefer to have an icon to the right of the omnibox that spawns an expandable, drop-down list of Bookmarks. Similar to 'Other Bookmarks' now, but without the need for a Bookmark Bar.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! fleischwolf 2/14/12 1:04 AM
If you don't want the sidebar to show you can simply deactivate it.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 2/14/12 6:26 AM
DirkGently1, you seem to have entirely misunderstood the nature of what is being requested of Google Chrome developers here - not that they impose a sidebar on all users, but that they provide an option, so that the many who do desire one can so configure their Chrome browser....

Henri
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! HPFM 2/16/12 4:51 PM
Yeah, I have TOO MUCH screen real estate without the bookmarks sidebar. As one poster pointed out, most displays are 16:9 or 16:10 which leaves PLENTY of room for a sidebar (of course, this can be toggled on and off in damn near every other browser anyway). There's simply no excuse for NOT adding a sidebar. The issue is not whether a (toggle on/off) bookmarks sidebar SHOULD be added to Chrome......there is NO DOUBT that the sidebar SHOULD be added. Rather, the issue lies squarely with the developers at Google who couldn't care less about user feedback/requests preferring, instead, to dictate which features will be added and which features won't be added. There's little doubt that Google employees are nothing short of effete snobs who actually believe they know more about what users of their products want than the users themselves, and this despite feedback to the contrary. Pathetic!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 2/17/12 4:10 AM
HPFM, I question both the accuracy and the utility of attempting to characterise Google developers, particularly in the negative terms you have chosen to use. I don't know what sort of individual contact, if any, you have had with developers ; however, I did have the privilege of interacting with Google Toolbar developers and persons responsible for user contact from several different countries via a video conference a couple of years ago and I must say that I certainly did not experience them as «effete snobs». However it may be with this matter, it would perhaps be prudent to remember that those from whom we are requesting a side bar in Chrome are none other than Google developers ; it can hardly be wise to antagonise them unnecessarily by making comments of the type you make above, which in any case are irrelevant and for which, moreover, their exists no evidence at all. Let us instead continue to present our request for a sidebar in a manner which increases, rather than decreases the chances of their adoption....

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! tom.harrington49 2/17/12 8:38 AM
Google does NOT listen to its users. This sidebar issue is obviously important to a majority of Chrome users, myself included, and we still have no sidebar. What the hell, Google? I am going to quit wasting my time requesting a sidebar from Google. I will instead request that Mozilla make Firefox faster. Let's see if Mozilla listens! Adios, Chrome!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 2/17/12 8:55 AM
«This sidebar issue is obviously important to a majority of Chrome users, myself included ...» The sidebar issue is important to me as well, Tom, but a claim that it is «obviously important to a majority of Chrome users» requires substantiation. According to StatCounter, Chrome now enjoys a world-wide market share of approximately 30 % (http://gs.statcounter.com/#browser-ww-daily-20080701-20120217) ; do you have any indication that the side-bar issue is important to over half of these, i e, 15 % or more of all internet users worldwide ? There's no need to exaggerate ; this thread makes it quite apparent that there a not insignificant number of Chrome users who do desire a sidebar ; that should be quite enough for Chrome developers. If you choose to use Firefox rather than Chrome, the choice is yours - in that case I can recommend the so-called Nightly build (currently 13.0a1) which I find quite speedy. Myself, I have two versions of FF, two of Chrome, and one of Opera installed on my main box, with the FF Nightly build set as default, precisely because it, unlike Chrome versions, allows me the option of a sidepanel....

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! HPFM 2/17/12 4:52 PM
mhenriday, for the record, I characterized (or was trying to make an attempt to characterize) the people at Google, virtually ALL of the people at Google, as snobs. Frankly, it's a part of their corporate culture; just look at their senior-level management, if you don't believe me (Eric Schmidt, himself, comes off as the biggest snob on the planet, IMHO). Further, although I have not had any sort of individual contact with the developers, I know several individuals who have, indeed had contact with Google employees (primarily managers, including some HR people) and they most certainly do appear to be snobs. How else would you justify questioning a prospective employee about why he "only managed to maintain a "B" average" in college......when this particular applicant graduated from HARVARD? I suppose he should have gone to Stanford. Regardless, I honestly couldn't care less if my post serves to 'antagonize the developers'. In fact, that's probably what they need; antagonism. They surely don't listen to rationale and reasonable requests so I'll keep trying a different approach.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 2/18/12 6:19 AM
Given HPFM, that you admittedly «have not had any sort of individual contact with the developers», I once again suggest that you refrain from characterising - or attempting to characterise - them. Eric Schmidt is a very public figure, and thus criticising him and his statements is, I think, quite legitimate, but criticising people with whom one has had no contact and knows nothing about strikes me as another matter entirely. The incident you relate concerning a prospective employee who managed to achieve a B average at Harvard has, to my mind, nothing to do with snobbism ; rather, I suggest, the interviewer found the query relevant with respect to the job in question. May I remind you that the issue at hand here is not whether Google developers are snobs or no, but whether we can get that hotly desired sidebar ?...

Henri
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! HPFM 2/18/12 12:34 PM
mhenriday, I believe I am quite aware of the issue at hand; no need for the constant reminders, thank you. However, considering this request has been made eons ago (after all, this thread, itself, is over 2 years old), what do you suppose the chances are that we will EVER see this request implemented? I, for one, believe that the sidebar will either NEVER be implemented OR it will be several years, or longer before it is (even at that, it may be in the form of an extension rather than a feature of the browser). Hence, my frustration (not to mention the frustration of many, many other users, and potential users, of Chrome) is being expressed in fora such as this one. We simply have no other outlet - nowhere to vent - and polite requests have gotten us exactly ZERO results.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 2/19/12 7:43 AM
HPFM, you may possibly be aware of the issue at hand, but unfortunately your postings do not reflect this awareness. Badmouthing the developers strikes me as hardly the most efficacious way to inspire them to provides us with a sidebar. I, too, am frustrated by the fact that none has yet been vouchsafed us, but I shall continue, thank you, to respond to postings - even yours ! - that would transform this thread into an arena for venting....

Henri
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! HPFM 2/19/12 3:52 PM
mhenriday, once again, this thread began, over 2 years ago, as a request for a feature implementation. Others have followed by requesting the same feature, both in this thread and elsewhere. I don't know about you, and can't speak for anyone else, but I've flat run out of patience, and that's not so much a result of the feature not having been actually implemented, rather, it's a result of the fact that the requests have been met with stony silence. Frustration, considering the circumstances, is entirely justifiable and it's only human nature to "vent". Regardless, you won't, in fact, have an opportunity to respond to my postings here because this will be my LAST post in this arena. Further gripes about this issue are pointless; they'll either add the feature or they won't irrespective of how many posts in this forum are made requesting that the feature be added. I simply will NOT even consider using Chrome as my primary browser until this feature is added, period.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 2/20/12 4:22 AM
Once again, HPFM, you seem unable to understand that the main issue here is not whether or no you happen to have «flat run out of patience», but rather how we can convince the Chrome developers to provide us with the sidebar that many of us have been requesting for the last two years (my first post in this regard on the present thread dates from 20 October 2010 ; in addition, I have also taken other steps to bring the issue to the attention of the Chrome developers). If you feel that you have nothing further to contribute to  a positive discussion on this manner, you are, of course, free to abstain from posting to this thread ; if however, you can contribute something which will help us attain our goal, I hope you will reconsider your decision, which seems to have been taken in affect....

Boy, finding this box to post a reply was really "easy". Let's see let's make it on the last page where no one would ever think to look. Typical Google crap where.

I like the look of Chrome and it seems fast. Like the minimalist approach. But I want my bookmarks sidebar. I won't use this until I have it.

My only complaint about Firefox is it uses tons of RAM and is really slow. And if I want a menu bar then give it to me. Let US decide what we want.

Count me in.  Without a bookmark sidebar, it makes Chrome unusable for my purposes, so it's back to Firefox for me.  This should be a simple add-on, and I see a lot of people want this feature.  What's with you guys?  Get it together.  If you want to be on the forefront of browsers, you need to fix this!!!!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! excimoe 2/27/12 3:29 PM
I have considered switching to Chrome numerous times in the past three years, but I've always given up on it because of the lack of a bookmarks sidebar. My laptop has a wide screen. This means I can easily afford to sacrifice space on the sides, but not on the top and bottom. It shouldn't even matter why I want a sidebar, though - giving users options is better than making layout decisions for them. That's like rule number one of interface design.

One thing I like about Internet Explorer is that you can have the Favorites sidebar.  Apparently it isn't available in Google Chrome...what's up with that?  I did have Foxfire and it enabled me to have a sidebar also.  How hard can it be for Google to make that possible?  I'll still use IE until they resolve this...:0(

Personally I like you might hate it..  don't blame me :)

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! silvergunzoo 3/7/12 9:35 AM
I need a vertical sidebar, seems simple to implement, why we don't have this option, is it rocket science to make or what ?
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! mhenriday 3/7/12 10:47 AM
Silvergunzoo, given that it's implemented in,not least, Firefox, the problem is hardly that the Chrome/Chromium developers find it difficult to do. I have no pipeline to them, but if I can be permitted to guess, I suspect the issue here lies rather with aesthetics - a sidebar doesn't seem to fit their conceptions of how Chrome/Chromium should look. But if a sufficient number of users who desire this feature continue to post to this thread, who knows ? -stilicidi casus lapidem cavat....

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Statesman 3/17/12 5:19 PM
Yes I would like to see a bookmark sidebar. Will keep using FF till its implemented. I was hoping some kind programmer would have made an addon for this, seeing Google dosnt appear to be interested. It could simply be made as invisible, till you touch the side of the screen with your cursor. Desparatley needed on Chrome Beta for Tablets as well.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! sixfootjames 3/21/12 2:58 AM
Lord, I pray that you will find it in your heart to have Google finally see the plight of the many who need this feature within their beloved browser, Chrome.

Lead us not into the temptation of Firefox or the evils of Internet Explorer but deliver us a left column sidebar of bookmarks to easily manage all our bookmarks when we hit Ctrl + B.

Allow our bookmarks to sync automagically to the cloud from this sidebar-of-joy so that our years of bookmark collecting might not go amiss but will be waiting for us when we pass on to the other side.

Amen.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! jacob922i 4/5/12 11:27 AM
100% of users feel exactly as you do. That's why Google will never be supplying a sidebar extension or addition to Chrome.

Google is one of the least responsive companies to user issues that I've ever seen.

"Do no evil"

That's their motto. Yet they maintain detailed records on all of us. Pure marketing bs.

They are the epitomy of evil.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! jacob922i 4/5/12 11:31 AM
Funny thing... I love Chrome but I will NEVER be able to use Chrome because of this issue.

It's way faster than FF and it's slick looking. Always hated the FF icon besides.

But Chrome has no bookmarks sidebar? I have probably on the order of 10,000 bookmarks in 100's of folders from over 10 years of surfing - and they want to use a drop-down list for that?

Google. You're just plain dull, dumb, ignorant.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! jacob922i 4/5/12 11:33 AM
You're assuming google cares. They don't.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Statesman 4/5/12 11:59 AM
Hehe, good post. I have taken Chrome off my Laptop, Tablet and PC till it gets added. It's just too much of a pain to use, despite it's apparent speed. Chrome dips for the third straight month http://www.webpronews.com/internet-explorer-regaining-lost-market-share-ground-2012-04 Not surprised.

I can't believe they've gotten so popular without a bookmarks sidebar. My sidebar is opened most of the time. I'll stick with firefox until this happens. Stubborn developers is all this is...
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Racerbob 5/22/12 4:26 AM
I agree ! I am a Firefox fanatic, BUT if the Chrome developers add a bookmark side panel, I would consider using Chrome.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! drew.j.harrison 5/22/12 6:07 AM
FYI there is a version of chrome called "coolnovo" (formerly chromeplus) that does have a sidebar amongst other additional features.  However after using it for a couple weeks I have found it is not as useful as the one in Firefox (i.e. it is only a bookmark manager). I have also found that Google has still not corrected the issue with chrome randomly jumbling all your extensions in the toolbar every now and then.  Back to Firefox for now.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! Statesman 5/23/12 12:40 AM
This has been requested a zillion times, here:

I can only add my voice to the chorus. I wont be installing chrome until this happens, in the meantime, google "Chrome+" by coolnovo. based on Chromium, still in Beta, but has a bookmark sidebar. I'm using that

Another side bar request from me.

What's holding Google back from this feature?

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! kenatsun 6/2/12 1:15 PM
Amen to all the hundreds of pleas above.

Is it possible that Google's hostility to bookmarks is that they want everybody to find everything by search, rather than by filing things under their own persisting categories?

Google is becoming worse than Microsoft even faster than Microsoft became worse than IBM.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! caver_tim 6/2/12 4:42 PM
no hostility to bookmarks.
It's just that someone has made the design choice to have the bookmarks bar going across the top rather than in a broad band down the side.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! kenatsun 6/2/12 4:58 PM
A third possibility would have been to offer both, and give the people a choice.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! caver_tim 6/3/12 4:33 AM
Indeed an option do this was an option but it seems that you have a choice. There are LOTS of things in chrome that could be "an option".
if you include ALL of those options then you end up with page after page of option screens, and while each one of those options would probably only be "a few lines of code", add them all together and you have the potential for a lot bloat and slowness.
So someone has to make a decision on what provides functionality without excess and slowness.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! gafagafa 6/6/12 8:38 AM
2012 and no sidebar options ...lol.
This only reflects that even what some may call "brilliant" .  . .can be "stupid" at the same time !

I suspect Chrome will get these options in say .  . . NEVER !
If they have not done it by now .  . they are not going to .
And this is why Chrome will ever bow to Firefox..  . . people want CHOICE !
DOH !!!!

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! rfdog 7/4/12 1:45 PM
I am very unhappily still with Firefox solely due to lack of a bookmarks sidebar. I use Chrome for a few things like REST clients, but that's about it. It's enormously disappointing that I cannot switch to a faster, slicker more stable browser due to this single glaring deficiency.

If Google is unwilling to add a bookmarks sidebar as part of Chrome proper, then please, please at least support sidebar extensions so someone can implement one. See: https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/chromium-dev/2QYFbCEklnU.

Everyone, please PLUS 1 (+1) this thread right at the top and also Hit the "Report Abuse" (Exclamation symbol) button. Apparently they take Abuse quite seriously and MIGHT then spot this forum thread.

I still cannot believe not a single person at Google's said anything about this?

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! MrKyleO 7/13/12 1:33 PM
Open Bookmark Manager (Wrench>Bookmarks or Shift+Ctrl+O), right-click the tab, and Pin tab.  The tab will be compact and always open for use.  Not exactly what this thread is asking for, but the most elegant solution atm.
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! kenatsun 7/14/12 8:53 AM
That's a pretty cool workaround!  I'm not sure if will prove to be good enough to win me back from Firefox, but I'll give it a try.

Thanks, MrKyleO!
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! terranaut 7/19/12 9:15 PM
its the one things stopping me from using chrome, the time i would save daily with a lefthand set of folders/bookmarks adds up quick, i can simple see my 12 folders and the various bookmarks within them, and each day i just click one by one thru my news, my personal sites, and so forth. but the way chrome has it now i cant see them until i go to the bookmark bar, and then i can see them, and then i have to go to the next bookmark, and then repeat the process, its more than twice the time spent because i cant see them at all times and just click thru them quickly each day, just like everyone else i know does in IE. at least having the choice to see our bookmarks all at once and save time should be an option, i dont like the only option of losing time....

This thread is 2 years old and they still haven't addressed this issue.  IT's a middle finger to everyone who asked for it.  Screw you google.  I won't use chrome exclusively until this is available.  Firefox is my browser of choice.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! omnray 8/18/12 4:51 AM
There is now something much more interesting than Bookmarks sidebar exist for Chrome. Take look on "Tabs Outliner" in Chrome Web Store.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/eggkanocgddhmamlbiijnphhppkpkmkl

Its not exactly about bookmarks. Or not about bookmarks at all. It simple make uses cases for which bookmarks (especially in sidebars) was used much more manageable.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! sixfootjames 8/18/12 10:29 PM
Well why post it here if it's not about bookmarks? Sorry, this thread is begging Google to do something about the missing bookmarks bar to help people organise and quickly open their links. This plugin is great, but it does not solve the issue.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! sholomar 10/9/12 6:09 PM
I always check back every few months to see if they have added one yet. Funny thing, you used to be able to turn an experimental one on but they disabled it. It just irks me when companies leave out features and do things in an illogical manner just because they can. I guess they figured I'll just use firefox. They figured correctly. :)

On a full size monitor I have plenty of room for bookmarks on one side, I like utilizing extra space with buttons to navigate by mouse. I guess they figure I'll do everything with my keyboard. Nah, I'm old fashioned and the more people tell me to just press this and that key, the more stubborn I am and stick with my mouse. :)

Also trying to upvote this. Please add it. If you're concerned about user experience, then disable it by default. By all means, make it an expert setting. But please allow us with widescreen monitors to efficiently use our screen space.

I think this is a great idea, even something likes Opera 11 sidebar, its icon based and doesn't take up much room

As far as I know, there once was a Sidebar-API, but it was in Alpha-stage. It has been removed some time ago though.

Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! comparably 2/26/13 10:23 AM
The reason chrome does not have a sidebar, is becuase Google prefers that you do not use bookmarks, it wants you to use search engines for everything and bookmarks skip that process. They want you to use search engines for everything, becuase they make money on advertising and links when you search for a page, use a book mark to go to Bloomberg.com and they have no chance to advertise. It is a shame because chrome is the best, but I will use firefox just for the sidebar
Re: Please add a Bookmarks Sidebar on Chrome's left side. Thank You! sixfootjames 2/26/13 10:35 AM
Finally...a very valid point since I read the other day that everything Google does, all the technology they come out with is geared towards keeping you online....hence making more money.

Self driving car = Spend more time online
Google Glass = More time online
Android, Chrome, YouTube etc etc etc = More time online = More money in their pockets.

Clever. I will now leave this forum at long last ;) To be honest, I only have a few bookmarks these days and most use search anyway.
