| Is Finnish spell checker coming to Google Chrme? | MrNerd | 05/04/10 03:18 | Hey,
I live in finland, and it was nice to have browser that supported Finnish from the day 1. But, Finnish Spell checker has been missing all this time. Chrome supports spell checker for almost every language, but not for Finnish. And I was just wondering when it is coming for Chrome? Whole Finland has been waiting for it so long, almost two years, and still we haven't seen it. If you would have seen Finnish reviews of the browser when it came out, you could not found any where this missing feature wasn't in the minus list. Yeah, it must sound weird that I am asking this at this point, when the browser has been published for two years. But i was looking through the chromium.org and found out that Finnish is in list of languages that will be supported in Chrome OS text input. And i though that if Finnish spell checker isn't supported in Chrome, it will not be supported in Chrome OS, even if the text input for Finnish alphabet (with Ö, Ä and Å) is supported. So I am asking if the guys that are creating Chrome, could add Finnish spell checker at least before the Chrome OS's Announcement. Please, and sorry for my bad English. |

| Re: Is Finnish spell checker coming to Google Chrme? | kuurnn | 25/05/10 10:07 | AFAIK Chrome uses Hunspell, which sucks for finnish. OOo says "NOTE: Hunspell is not capable of handling Finnish language properly, so these dictionaries should not be used." Although Firefox uses Hunspell also and has finnish spell checker? Dunno, Hunspell's problems are probably about hyphenation, correct me if I'm wrong... The best thing for (at least finnish) users would be that Chrome would change to Enchant which supports multiple backends, including Hunspell & Voikko. Though I'm not sure if Chromium can use any LGPL'd code.

| Re: Is Finnish spell checker coming to Google Chrme? | talamus | 12/09/10 08:28 | The best (open source) spell checking and hyphenation package for Finnish language is Voikko:
http://voikko.sourceforge.net/ Voikko is a C/C++/C# library that is based on domain-specific programming language called Malaga. (Yes, they had to invent a new programming language to spellcheck Finnish...) However! You do not have to use Voikko (or Malaga) directly! I strongly suggest using Enchant instead: http://www.abisource.com/projects/enchant/ Quote: - - - Enchant is capable of having multiple backends loaded at once. Currently, Enchant has 8 backends: * Aspell/Pspell (intends to replace Ispell) * Ispell (old as sin, could be interpreted as a defacto standard) * MySpell/Hunspell (an OOo project, also used by Mozilla) * Uspell (primarily Yiddish, Hebrew, and Eastern European languages - hosted in AbiWord's CVS under the module "uspell") * Hspell (Hebrew) * Zemberek (Turkish) * Voikko (Finnish) * AppleSpell (Mac OSX) More/other backends are welcomed. - - - So, instead of re-inventing the wheel, I strongly recommend using this PORTABLE and EXTENDIBLE spell checking library that already handles all the nasty agglutinative languages. Thank you! |

| Re: Is Finnish spell checker coming to Google Chrme? | caygill | 19/11/10 04:28 | Without building it from source code, there is no Finnish spell checker available for Chrome - and doesn't seem to come one. It's a joke, if you ask me. The bottom line is, that the developers of Voikko considers Google to be a part of big evil along with Microsoft, thus no Finnish spell checker for Chrome or its open source brother. |
