the menu bar does not exist in chrome and has never existed.
all the menus are under the spanner icon

Actually, sir it has existed I had the exact same experience as Reann and cannot even remember what I did to get rid of the menu bar.

either you had a very very weird build of chrome or you were imagining it :-)
either way i've never seen chrome have a traditional menu bar in all the time i've been using it. and i've never seen anyone who can provide a screen shot to show this menu bar in action.
So where ever you saw this , you will probably never see it again. Chrome's menus are under the spanner icon.

Is there a way for me to see the desktop footer? Cause I find in EXTREMELY frustrating that I cannot toggle back and forth when I am working on multiple applications. I don't remember if I accidentally got rid of it or if that it is a limitation of the browser. Either way...I can't find an answer.

Well, I assure you that I saw it, but as you suggest--I may very well could have imagined it. How disappointing...

I imagined it. I flip between Firefox and Chrome a lot. But I pretty sure I either got rid of some type of bar in the upper left corner or moved it because I rested my hands on the keyboard and it caused some short-cut option to happen..

I had the same thing happen to me. I was trying to figure out if I did something to cause the change. There is definitely something missing!

Hmmmmm... I have a traditional menu bar, cave_troll... and here is screen grab:
Now this might be only available on the Macintosh platform but to say it never existed...

@jminardsr: No arguing with your screen grab!
But coming back to the posts of the others, I suspect they were on MS Windows? We'll just have to guess unless they come back to clarify :).

sorry i was being Windows (tm) centric
Macs are different in so far as I understand them you can't not have a menu along the top.
Windows is a little bit more flexible and lets apps not have menu bars.
I believe that even Microsoft office with the new ribbon interface still has a menu on macs
