|Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||mdestefano85||2/10/11 9:01 PM|
Google Chrome version: 9.0.597.94 (Developer Build 73967) Ubuntu 10.04
How can I remove the 'Apps' menu from the new tabs page? I do not use apps nor do I use the webstore. I just want a pure browser.
Please don't suggest hovering over it and pressing the 'X' because all that does is minimize it to the bottom of the browser. I want it either completely gone or completely hidden, not minimized. On small screens it's intrusive, even when minimized.

I don't like it there either. Most likely, in the future, we'll be able to hide it.

I found the original post when looking for instructions to remove the "Apps" menu. My reason for wanting to remove it is identical to the OP's: I have no plans to use Apps, and I dislike the space it consumes on my small screen. I'd like to have the option for it to be completely invisible, even if it's not the default. Thanks.

"Using your mouse, hover over the title of the section you want to hide. For instance, to remove the ["Apps"] section from the page, hover over the ["Apps"] section title. Click the x icon that appears on the right to remove the section from the page."
The X is a bit subtle, and all the way to the right.
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||†Tommy G.†||2/15/11 7:55 PM|
Again, that just drops it to the bottom of the page.

Really, there is an "X"!
This was pissing me off too and I thought about the idiot who would write about the "X" but there is one....
There's the line...and if you click the line, it opens up. If you go to the far right, around the line, there is this clear and somewhat invisible "X" That would remove the apps part completely.
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||pragelf||3/8/11 8:01 AM|
Maybe we're looking at different platforms? I see no "x". I can click at upper right to toggle between large and small icons (Mac, build 9.0.597.107). As OP noted, that's far from *REMOVE*.
It's crazy not to be able to customize what the browser does with a blank tab. In my case, I don't want the distraction of an invitation to *PLAY A GAME!* every time I open my browser.
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||pragelf||3/8/11 8:04 AM|
Update: by playing with the show/hide disclosure arrow (top left of apps area), I was able to bring the "X" into view. I wonder whether some *themes* somehow obscure the "X"...
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||I Concur||3/25/11 5:36 PM|
I downgraded chrome as soon as I saw this. I don't want this apps crap. I'm not upgrading until it's able to be completely hidden.
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||t3yrnes||4/27/11 7:07 PM|
I could BARELY see them on my netbooks little screen,, with the theme i'm using. i'm sure some people might be having a hard time because of the theme, but I've supplied a screenshot, too:
Hope that helps the rest of you!
I know this doesn't answer those who just plain want it gone (because, no, this doesn't "REMOVE" it, but rather nests it at the bottom, which I personally don't mind, at least its not up in the main screen bumping my Most Visted down -- that's all I care about!)

Actually, you can uninstall unwanted apps. Just hover your cursor over the app and a little wrench should appear at the top right of icon. Click it and you should see an "Uninstall" option.

That X appears at the end of the line close to 'Apps' and to the right.
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||Xjph||5/25/11 9:53 AM|
Found the "X", clicked it, and now there is a little "Apps" button at the bottom of the screen eating up about 1cm of real estate. My screen is cramped enough as it is (Viewpad 10 tablet), so I want it *gone*. I don't want a visible button anywhere that brings it back.

people, this is for the NEW TAB page, not your regular page.
I'm looking at this problem too
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||craizyone||6/18/11 3:21 AM|
To do these fixes close all Chrome pages.
"Your profile could not be opened correctly"
To fix this go to C:\Users\[your profile]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\
Find file “Web Data” and delete it.
After deleting my “Web Data” file, Chrome will start up again without a problem.
That stupid Apps Tab was driving me nuts! with Angry Birds advertisement so I pulled the source page up to find the info on the apps. A little research and I figured it out.
Go to computer open "C:\Users\[your profile]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default. Find file "Preferences" and right click on it. Go to Properties and change the attributes, uncheck read only. then hit ok. Double click on the file, it should ask you what to open it with, I used word. At the top of the page you will see this:
"apps_promo_counter": 11, <------ change the number to 0
It should be this when you change it "apps_promo_counter": 0,
Save the file and exit
Go back to preferences right click and change the attributes back to read only.

To remove an app, hover your mouse over the app. Then click the little wrench in the top right corner of the highlighted box. Then words should come down and their should be an uninstall at the bottom click it and the app will be removed.

|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||javtex||12/14/11 6:44 PM|
I found on Chrome version 16.0.912.63m you can just drag the app (all of them) to the two pages, the grey lines saying "Most Visited" and Äpps" and if you drag in between those lines, you can create a new page, so you can have a clean app page.
Hope it worked

I think a lot of people have entirely missed the point of this post, it's not about the apps themselves, it's about getting rid of the bar at the bottom of the "new tab" page all together, and the silly apps page that comes with it. See the image.
This page is a nuisance; it's not needed and is simply an annoyance, with the bar at the bottom and the big arrow that you can accidentally click on when you are selecting one of your most visited pages from the "new tab" screen. It would be nice to be able to get rid of this part entirely, though I doubt it will be removed as it can bring Google revenue via the "Store", which incidentally you can't remove, as "Remove From Chrome/Chromium" is greyed out.
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||caver_tim||4/13/12 6:12 AM|
why not just ignore it.
Chrome should remember what bit of the new tab page you want to see, so you can set it to the "most visited" and just don't click on the small unobtrusive "apps" link
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||Jennasis||4/13/12 7:56 AM|
Ignoring it is easy on a 23inch monitor, but not so easy if your screen is small, like on a netbook or tablet pc. The bars take up a large amount of space on anything with a vertical resolution of 600pix or less, especially as tablets and netbooks often use GUIs that take up a proportion of the screen's height and/or width already. What this can often leave you with is half of your most visited pages being hidden and having to scroll to get to them every time; also, as the button/bar for Apps is quite large, there is a chance you can click on them by accident.
While a relatively minor annoyance, it still represents an area where Chrome/Chromium is failing to meet everybody's needs and could be improved.
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||caver_tim||4/13/12 8:29 AM|
you could use somethign like the speed dial extension to replace the Google new tab page all together
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||Jennasis||4/13/12 8:38 AM|
That might just help :)
Thanks for putting the idea out there, might help a few people with this annoyance! I've not heard of that extension before, but it certainly solves the problem :)

Speed Dial 2 pulls up most visited too if you prefer; I just downloaded it on both the main PC and netbook and sync's. It works much better than the Chromium new tab page for me on a Samsung N150, so does the job just great, thanks :)

mdestefano85, You can remove the apps by going to my apps page, click anywhere on the app you want to remove, do not launch. The Information page about that app will come up. In the heading you will find overview, details, reviews, related and a trash can. Click on the trash can it opens another box, click on remove. Hope this helps you.

I know exactly what you are talking about and not a single person has even come close to answering the question. I have the exact same problem on my chrome homepage. If I can't figure out how to get rid of this nuisance soon,I'm dumping chrome and picking up a different browser. I don't like having a whole bar on my homepage being forced upon me.
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||Factuall||11/12/12 6:11 AM|
I don't think you actually can do that.
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||ganesh purupu||6/27/13 12:45 AM|
This is how to do it
Drag the app into the Remove from Chrome button at the lower right corner. You can also right-click on the app icon itself and select Remove from Chrome.
The app’s icon is removed from the New Tab page.
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||xaxxon||9/22/13 7:20 PM|
Right click on it then click on "show apps shortcut".
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||unsolving||9/24/13 9:50 PM|
You can click x's to you're hearts content - the empty apps boxes will still remain (how pathetically stupid)
|Re: Remove 'Apps' from new tab page.||howard atkinson||9/25/13 6:59 AM|
Right click on the bookmarks area and untick the option for "Show apps shortcut"
