As of this week Chromium is no longer working with Netflix streaming. Why?

WebKit        534.6
V8        2.3.9
User Agent        Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.6 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/7.0.499.0 Safari/534.6

Report the bug: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/entry and use a more stable version (I recommend the current Beta): http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel.

Same for me. Was watching streaming shows on Tuesday, and then today out of nowhere it tells me Instant View is not supported on this browser.

Version:  7.0.503.0 (Official Build 57033)

I'm guessing it's something as simple (and silly) as the Netflix user-agent detection code being broken and not able to figure out that you're using Chrome 7.  By the way, if you search for "user-agent" in your favorite search engine, you'll find numerous sites that let you see your user-agent string.  Here's mine (showing Chrome 7 on Windows 7 in the en-US locale):

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.6 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/7.0.503.0 Safari/534.6

Perhaps the format of the string changed significantly when the switch to Chrome 7 occurred.

Looks like I'm not the only one to come up with the user-agent theory - http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=53400

See the comments for that bug listing for suggestions on how to make Chrome 7 pretend to be Chrome 6 to make Netflix happy.

Add me to the list of affected users. I was watching a movie at 3AM (Pac. time) on 1 Sept. 2010, I paused the movie and left my computer for about 15 min. When I came back and tried to continue the movie "Our apologies — streaming is not supported on this browser." was what I got. I'm using Chrome 7.0.503.0

Netflix support tried quite a few things to fix it and nothing worked, so he said it might be a problem with Microsoft Silverlight. (Something about when they update content, some code for Silverlight has to be rewritten and since they don't officially support Chrome, something might not be compatible). He gave me the number to call: 866.234.6020 if anyone wants to try them. I haven't yet.

The user-agent thing works for me, but obviously that's a work-around, not a permanent fix.

Same issue. Fix immediately. User agent reads "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.6 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/7.0.503.0 Safari/534.6"

You are correct that this is an issue with the user agent detection and subsequent blocking on netflix.com. I know it's a hassle, but you can work around the problem by modifying the Chrome user agent string by adding the following command line flag: --user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/525.19 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/6.0.472.41 Safari/525.19")

Netflix started working in chrome 7 ; please confirm
Re: Why did Chrome and Netflix suddenly stop working together? gbond006 9/20/10 4:44 PM
Yes!! It's finally working again!! Chrome 7.0.517.8

BTW - The user-agent string only worked on 1 out of 3 of my computers running chrome. Don't know why.

netflix just told me that chrome looks like a new connection to them each time and they can't detect that subsequent connections are from the same computer.

Down again on dev.
Re: Why did Chrome and Netflix suddenly stop working together? Cojac 4/27/11 6:37 AM
Chrome
Windows 7

Hi, I was having the same problem, Silverlight would crash each time I would stream a IW movie on Netflix: This ended up fixing my streaming media issues, not only with Netflex but with every other streaming site I have used since.
1) Open IE browser.
2) Open tools and select Internet Options.
3) Select Privacy tab, click on Sites.
4) Add Netflix.com

I hope this helps
