|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||Bapabooiee||4/28/09 12:47 PM|
Make sure you don't re-launch Chrome!
On XP: Go to C:\Documents and Settings\<your_username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\on Vista: C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\
You have to have Hidden Folder enabled to find these directories. Otherwise, just paste it in to you address bar and press enter.
Once there, you should see a bunch of files. Two of which are called "Bookmarks", and "Bookmarks.bak". Copy the Bookmarks.bak file to a safe location. Now, close Chrome. Rename the "Bookmarks.bak" file you just copied to "Bookmarks", and copy it back in to that directory, overwriting the original one.
There may be a chance it it's too late, 'cause if you close and re-launch Chrome, the Bookmarks.bak file gets overwritten =\
Hope this helps - and I'm also gonna have to say that Chrome should be a lot smarter with you bookmarks. We really need a Ctrl+Z option >_>

|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||Bapabooiee||4/28/09 7:04 PM|
Yeah, that's one thing that really needs to change. I'm really, really careful with my bookmarks, and export them regularly. I've not yet run in to any trouble with my bookmarks, but I've seen this is a troubling issue with Chrome.
I love Chrome because it's minimal, and it's very virtuous with keeping your data... except with bookmarks. Accidentally hit delete - gone forever, in most cases.
I'm sorry that had to happen :[
I'm gonna mark this as answered, as I'm sure this can help other people who may run in to this situation, if that's alright.
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||MaryG||6/3/09 8:45 PM|
I'm so mad... I lost many important bookmarks... I really messed up my job and all my favourites sites too! Plus I use a shared PC and I accidentally erased many of my brother's bookmarks. And he's even angrier than me.
I really can't believe it. One stupid mistake (I didn't want some of my bookmarks to show up on the main page because i share it) and now years of internet are gone. For ever.
I kind of hate you, Google Chrome...
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||mrmagoo||9/28/09 10:33 AM|
I've mysteriously lost months and months of bookmarks in chrome - it's obvious this is a hereditary problem as it's happened to so many others - why can't this issue be resolved so this doesn't continue to happen? - I've lost confidence in chrome

|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||mylord||1/21/10 8:02 AM|
Very easy fix. I had exported about a month ago, so I had a fairly recent backup. But the expected loss gave me the opportunity to actually READ some pages that I had book-marked. (often I bookmark, and never get back to read the original page thoroughly and try all the links!) So I can tomorrow redo the clean-up (without tampering with the recently added) and actually READ some of the bookmarked stuff I have neglected. Even maybe back up to Flash.
Anyhow, great response!! Thanks again
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||paddyryan||2/7/10 10:22 AM|
Screw you Chrome. You need an UNDELETE option for when you respond too slowly and I inadvertently delete the wrong bookmarks folder along with the one I meant to DELETE. Surely you have heard your users complain of this already often enough?! FIX IT you fools!
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||Aramix||2/10/10 2:58 AM|
It just needs to be checked before syncing whether there has been any bookmark deleted and if there was then ask to confirm the syncing.. so if there would be any then the ones deleted by mistake won't be synced and lost forever :)
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||mrhenrylee||3/13/10 4:03 PM|
googles are fools. Bookmarks can be deleted accidentally too easily. Very often is not even the fault of the user. I did not mean to delete any bookmark at all. Simply , somehow . touch some key or combination of keys and the whole folder of bookmarks got deleted. Google fools fools fools.

|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||gurump||5/17/10 2:55 PM|
Hey Bapabooiee I did the exact same thing as ChaitanyaPodila did last year but instead of deleting the b'marks before i reinstalled win 7, i (thinking i was a genius) deleted the windows.old folder just to clear up space that I THINK had tons of the b'marks in it. =( Genius! If i hadn't, I would've tried your solution for the .bak file. *sits and cries* at least i saved my outlook .pst file. *sigh*
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||deborahjb||6/8/10 3:05 AM|
You can also right-click on the bookmarks file and go to Properties where you can see a tab, Previous Versions. Click on this and find the most recent day, open the Default folder and copy the bookmarks file there, and close the properties window. Go back into the original window, delete the current bookmarks file and paste in the copied one. Voila!
It may be a few days or weeks old, but better than months or more!
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||kikid94||6/14/10 1:32 PM|
I did exactly as these directions said, but my bookmarks aren't here. And I had to re-launch chrome as part of the directions, so now there's no chance at getting them back at all. Thanks.
I'm just going to start using Internet Explorer again. At least when I used that it didn't randomly say that it "cannot recover your settings" and then delete my bookmarks.
Fuck you, Google Chrome.
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||Rian California||7/2/10 5:45 PM|
Yes, you can recover them by this way;
Open Google chrome ----> press on your keyboard (Ctrl + B) & that is it.
hope this way is helpful to you

I have upgrade it, and i have lost all my bookmarks... How can restore it, the bookmarks.bak file is small 1kb.
I have lost over 6 month of my bookmarks????
I can return to use firefox, but Need recover all bookmarks or I have serious problems with my work....
Some one can help me?
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||jrstephens||7/12/10 5:45 PM|
This just happened to me too. I don't even know what key I clicked, but all of a sudden my most important bookmark folder was gone. No warning, no confirmation popup.
Amazingly, if you go to history and delete items, it gives you a confirmation popup. What's more important, bookmarks or history?
Judging by this thread, Google has had well over a year to recognize and fix this problem. Screw Google.

|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||WereNotWorthy||7/30/10 4:01 AM|
Dear friends at Google...
I've just deleted an important bookmarks folder and feel slightly put out that I will now have to play around with system (.bak) files in order to restore it. Do you think that it's professional on your part to make your customers delve into the inner workings of your programs in order to achieve something that a simple 'undo' (ctrl+z) function would fix?
I'm writing this in Notepad. Notepad is a very simple program - even simpler than Chrome - and yet it has an Undo function. Would it be so difficult to add this to your bookmarks manager?
I see that it's been nearly a year and a half since this thread was started. Yet no action has taken place to remedy this issue. Methinks that there may be some buck passing going on in Google! Or is it possible that Google has a policy NOT to make changes to their software in response to customer complaints, because of the danger of setting a precedent. After all, make one change and you might have to make many more!
Wait... I think I can feel a poem coming on....
A fresh faced young geek from Google
Went beserk when he bought a stud poodle
Cos' one of it's balls
Was 'deleted', and no calls
To the vet could restore the darned thing!
Judging from this thread methinks there are rather a lot of people would like to do that to a bunch of Google programmers! (lol)

I just deleted my bookmark folder as well, but then i found out you can find them again by going into "my documents." then on the top it says file, edit, view, etc. if you go on the "favorites" toolbar it should show you all your bookmarks. I was able to find my folder! i hope this helps some of you guys out.
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||MEKruser||8/18/10 6:40 PM|
I did not delete the entire Bookmarks, but I did inadvertently delete an entire folder and about 100 links (Google makes it too easy to delete in its Bookmark Manager - why not have an optional "confirm delete" window - duh!). Bapabooiee, you saved me a lot of reconstruction and my thanks to you.
GOOGLE - THE ABILITY TO UNDELETE A MISTAKE IN BOOKMARK MANAGER IS SO ELEMENTARY IT DEFIES FURTHER COMMENT. HOW DOES AN OTHERWISE TOGETHER COMPANY LIKE GOOGLE SOMETIMES MAKE SUCH STUPID, ELEMENTARY MISTAKES?. I see it in Picasa as well - elementary and dumb until the "umteenth" version finally corrects. Chrome has been an inferior product from the onset, except for its auto-complete search ability. Come on Google...we DO have other choices out there.

|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||tivoliphil||9/19/10 11:44 AM|
I too was shocked when I deleted my IE bookmarks accidentally when I wanted to remove the "imported from IE" file from the Chrome Bookmarks bar, thinking I was just removing a link on the bar. When I checked this thread in "Help", I was horrified to read in the first few responses that if you had closed Chrome before attempting a recovery, you were hooped! Not so. I was able to click on "options" under the wrench tool, then "Personal Stuff" then "Import data from another browser" and it re-imported my bookmarks from Internet Explorer. The only thing I haven't found is the one or two bookmarks I created since I started using Chrome just a couple of days ago (really like it thus far). They are probably hidden somewhere.
On a related point, it mystifies me why Google doesn't seem to monitor threads and put in an "official response", especially when they are taking so much flak. I never participate in forums on any site but do use them occasionally to find user solutions. I didn't even realise I had to scroll down to get latest thread info by date but this one has been going on since 4/28/09!

|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||edwinbradford||11/20/10 8:19 AM|
I don't get it. They have version control in Google Docs, it keeps all the versions of your docs going back since you started making them. Google Chrome bookmarks are stored in Google Docs if you enable syncing which most people will if they know about it. So where's the problem? Why don't Google just keep the changes to your bookmarks in the same way?
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||jrstephens||11/20/10 9:37 AM|
@edwinbradford: Even more to the point, check out browsing history in Chrome. To delete even a single item from your history, you have to take four deliberate actions: 1) hit "edit", 2) check the item to be deleted; 3) click "delete"; and 4) then there's a confirmation popup. This is to delete a SINGLE item -- whether it's your visit to you bank account or your visit to a porn site. And yet you can accidentally delete all of your bookmarks accidentally and permanently with one errant keystroke.
Chrome engineers, are you listening?!? Apparently not, because this thread is now a year and a half old.
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||SamPeters||11/26/10 5:49 AM|
Here's a good solution:
Since most people accidentally delete or remove bookmarks due to uninstallation or a crash,
why can't bookmarks file (.bak) be given special priority, and made to reside on the disk or wherever for an extra day or two,
or the time limit preference/choice given to the user as to when the existing bookmarks should disappear or erased
This should help when someone else apart from the user accidentally uninstalls it without knowledge that bookmarks are quite important, or when the application crashes, or in another similar scenario.
Also, if really needs space on the disk or wherever, uninstallation of google chrome will anyway not make a huge impact in saving disk space. Also, removing bookmarks will hardly save space despite its average size in kilobytes.
Besides, usually disk crashes, or viruses or OS errors will result in formatting the device entirely,
so the option of removing bookmarks along with uninstallation
( despite providing a prompt on whether the user likes to keep them during uninstallation)
isn't the most ideal for lot of people with this problem and issue on this thread and similar ones.
Can someone really sue
saying that uninstallation of Google Chrome's not helping me remove bookmarks immediately
and will it actually ruin the good will or intentions of the product design/usage ?
I thinks such a lawsuit can be overcome ( freedom of using a product ) can be overcome by providing a prompt beforehand
or during installation that "bookmarks exclusively" will live a little longer despite your own intention to get rid of it from your system or uninstall it.
(well atleast, there are not way too many haters or people who consider this product to be a unnecessary item or a burden ,
in the general public anyway yet :) )
Could the Google Chrome Engineers
kindly implement this feature and I'm sure it will help tons of newcomers, accidental bookmark deletions, all other people affected due to this issue ?
Can someone comment on whether an alternative's being considered at the moment or just a solution to this issue's under progress?
Some sort of information/response will help in showing some concern to the people affected by this issue.
I'm sure this will not take much of your valuable time.
Also, as edwinbradford and jrstephens mentioned the storage of bookmarks on the cloud or on the web,
one issue I can think of would be importing of bookmarks in other browsers like Opera / Firefox / IE9 for instance.
If there's a web application/ widget/ Api that will just give access to the bookmarks on the cloud in a secure way,
sure it shouldn't be a problem either.
Then I guess it's a matter of collaboration,
and consensus regarding some ethics/standards/principles/nature of usage and intention/support issues between the parties involved.
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||thomas.b.edgar||12/16/10 6:51 AM|
On Linux (in my case Ubuntu 10.04 w/ Gnome) the bookmarks are in your home directory under .config/google-chrome/Default. Like the method described above for Windoze:
"... Before exiting Chrome (so you don't blow away the good copy of Bookmarks.bak) copy the Bookmarks.bak file to a safe location. Now, close Chrome. Rename the "Bookmarks.bak" file you just copied to "Bookmarks", and copy it back in to that directory, overwriting the original one ... "
And yes Google, please provide the, ahem, standard 'undo/CTRL-Z/R U Sure' safeguard :-)
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||saturnine02||12/29/10 2:05 AM|
When google chrome crashed and burned, and i could not reinstall, i went online and found that he stores bookmarks in the C:\Documents and Settings\<your_username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\
So I copied the user data folder , just to be safe, because I thought, maybe in a few days , I can reinstall, or maybe I can somehow import those to Firefox . Didn't work, but today I managed to reinstall chrome, and Strangely , it made another user data , etc, in
C:\Documents and Settings\<ADMINISTRATOR>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\, and I just copied bookmarks, and bookmarks.bak to that folder, and I got them back . Now this is a different thing, but maybe useful for when chrome actually dissapears, just copy the user data .

Whoever is the coc*su*ker engineering manager who refuses to implement this simple functionality - RESTORE BOOKMARKS - for 2 years, I curse you.
May the engineer responsible for not implementing this for two years get genital harpies which will flare up and fester weekly till the day they take their last breath. May their body order be so repulsive that it induces vomiting to all those around them. May genital warts spread on their face, lips and tongue which ooze foul smelling juices. I curse you sincerely and here is an offering of one can of beer to seal this pact. Please hear my prayer.

|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||NewYawker||5/28/11 5:51 PM|
Ok... This worked for me...
On Vista you gotta do two things:
1. Go to the control panel. Click "folder options". click at top on "view". then you want to click "show hidden files and folders"
2. go to C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\ will see a file called "bookmarks". Right click on this and click "properties". click on top on "previous versions". it will then do a search.
Mine happened to be within the last couple of days. I clicked on the most recent, and then hit "restore".
I then, however, had to reboot my machine.
they were restored.

|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||melody20001151||6/28/11 5:39 PM|
I searched for hours trying to solve this problem. I hadn't noticed that my bookmarks had been deleted until after I had already added new ones and restarted my browser, also everyones advice seemed to always be irrelevant or for XP or Vista users and I have Windows 7. My life (as dramatic as that sounds) is stored within my 500+ bookmarks and to see them all dissapear was devastating. With bits and peices of information from this forum and others I was finally able to restore them and I haven't stopped smiling since. Nothing I am going to say is new information to this forum but the point of this post is to put it all in one place.
For Windows 7 Users
1. go to you Folders and access Windows C.
2. turn on your hidden files. To do this click on Organize (just under the address bar) and then click Folders and Search Options, then click the View tab. Under the Hidden Files and Folders section click Show HIdden Files, Folders, and Drives then click ok or apply - don't forget to reverse this later on.
3. paste in to the address bar C:\Users\Your Usernamet\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
or if you are like me and your system didn't like that
type in C:\Users\ then click your username, then AppData then Local, Google, Chrome, User Data and then Default
4. locate the Bookmarks file - this is not a folder. If you just press the letter B on your keyboard you should be taken right to it.
5. right click on Bookmarks and select restore to previous versions
6. Choose which date best suits your needs (you may lose a couple of days but you gain the hundreds you have already lost) and click on it once and then click RESTORE not OPEN
7. A new window will come up to confirm this, click restore again
8. this should have restored your bookmarks to the correct day. To see the changes close all open browsers and then open a new one. you should not have to restart your computer, just your browser.
9. don't forget to turn off the option of showing hidden folders
10. enjoy the feeling of having all those bookmarks back where they belong
I hope this worked as well for you as it did for me.

|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||seyalo||7/4/11 12:16 AM|
IT CAN BE DONE !!!!!!!!! :) I just did it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It does not matter if you closed Chrome or not! You dont have to follow a link that does not work! If it is a Bookmark that you ACTUALLY use then it is as simple as going to your HISTORY (ctrl+h) ......right click on bookmark (web page) you lost and choose "open in new window/tab". Do that till all "lost" book marks are in new windows then click on each one and add your star :)
I dont know crap about computers or 7 but as the saying goes "History repeats itself" :P

I had other computers hooked up to the sync, so I could do the following:
1. Disconnect from the internet
2. Open Chrome
3. Open the options and click "Stop Syncing this account" under personal stuff.
4. Connect to the Internet (now you have one computer with all of your bookmarks safe).
5. Sync your stuff to another email address and get your bookmarks back on the first computer
6. After that you can re-sync to the first account you used
I hope this is helpful and easier for people who have two computers synced to their accounts :)

Sorry, but none of the above worked for me. One of my folders just went "poof" & it was gone. Tried CTRL-Z &, of course, that did nothing to retrieve said folder. Fortunately, I had exported my Bookmarks several months ago (for Delicious Account) & had g-mailed them to myself, so I was able to open up the bookmarks & re-save them, one at a time! It took, well, a long time. So "S.O.S." (Save-often-sweeties), & Back-up, Back-up, Back-up. Hope this helps someone, if only for future disasters. Cheers!

I've tried everything here. The "renaming Bookmarks file" didn't work because the whole thing crashed midway through and my laptop rebooted itself, thus overwriting the Bookmarks folder. And the "restore previous versions" didn't work either because, for some reason, there are no previous versions. Essentially, I'm screwed. Years and years of bookmarks gone in the blink of an eye. :(

For those of you who have windows 7, try to find the bookmarks.bak file in C:\Users\J-pc\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default and then right-click properties. Click on the tab which says" previous versions."
Then copy oldest version and put it on your desktop. open that file in a web browser and see if the bookmarks that it is showing, matches yours correct one. look at see if all the book marks are present that you want. try the same thing with the other previous version files. copy and paste them on the desktop and test each of them out... i test it but it still didnt work... but then i went and rename the file to "bookmarks" only, message came up and i said ok to change the file type. take this file and put it in

Absolutely horrendously stupid Google Chrome!!!
I just got my life savings of bookmarks deleted, I will probably be able to find a year old bup but that doesn't really cut it for me. Right now I down-right hate Chrome.
However, I hate Telecare (http://www.telecare.dk/) even more. The root cause for this fundamental F-UP is because I sent my Android phone (on which I had Chrome Beta installed) to service because of a glitch in the headphone socket. The unbelievably useless low lives at Telecare (http://www.telecare.dk/) couldn't "find" the problem with the faulty hardware (it's still there) but instead they "upgraded" my phone's firmware "as a service".
After their "upgrade", the phone has exactly the same firmware as before! In fact they just had made a factory reset and by doing so they wiped clean the entire phone. I re-installed all apps inc. chrome and the phone synced it's empty bookmark folder to my computer. Unknowing of this I had to restart my computer and Voila; now it's all gone.
So what did I want with this post?
1. I badly needed to blow off some pressure.
2. Tell the world to avoid Telecare (http://www.telecare.dk/) in Denmark at all costs! Would you believe that they also sent a bill for their "service".
3. Tell Google they need to come up with a better solution, sync is inherently risky.
Btw, why is it that it's never Google themselves that answers these support questions? Take some responsibility Google!
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||SeaTurtle||4/22/12 9:18 PM|
You should use an extension called random bookmark. You can set it to a folder of bookmarks and then it's like stumbleupon but of only things you've chosen!
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||bellaroma||4/30/12 7:47 AM|
Thank you soooo much!!! I spent way too long looking for these bookmarks and your suggestion worked perfectly. I have a Mac so for all you Mac users go to 'user' folder - Library - Application Support - Google - Chrome - Default and you'll then see 'bookmarks' and 'bookmark.bak'. Follow the rest of the instructions and you'll be all set (assuming you didn't close Chrome). You're the best!!

Thank you so much!
At first I didn't realize that I had lost my bookmarks, and I closed & re-opend Chrome several times... so my Bookmarks file was obliterated. HOWEVER, I sign in to Chrome on several computers (work, home, & laptop) so I was able to open up my laptop that hadn't been used in several days, and do the procedure on that machine which then synchronized with my other computers and all was right in the world again.
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||Olivier Prevost||12/5/12 9:41 AM|
This is freaking crazy. I use 2 computer too. I did not do anything. I noticed my bookmarks disappeared at work... I came back home, they are gone too! These were 7 years worth of bookmarks before I was even using Chrome!!! I cannot believe a sync bug will delete all your bookmark. I am sure Google is smarter than this. Please prove it fast!
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||jontramos||12/5/12 9:58 AM|
Did you try to restore you bookmarks using the procedure above? Whatever you do, don't restart your browser until you try the above.
As a last resort, if you are running Windows, you can always do a restore.
Quick aside, I am going to attribute my loss of bookmarks to the "Amazon Wishlist" add-on. For me my bookmarks disappearing occurred right after i installed that add-on.

***REPOST THAT SOLVES MAC ISSUE
You have to access the individual "user" library folder, not the computer's library folder.
But in Mac OS Lion, the "user" library folder is now hidden as a default.
This is how you access it:
All you need to do is hit Command+Shift+G from the Mac desktop (or Finder > Go > Go to Folder) and type in ~/Library to temporarily access the Library directory in the Finder.
Once I did that, I finally found the Google/Chrome/Default folder with the bookmark file, and replaced it with my old one from my backups.

Bapabooiee YOU ARE A LIFESAVER!!!
Thank you so much for your instructions. I was simply organizing my bookmarks so that I could export them. I clicked "Reorder by title" when suddenly the entire "Imported from IE" folder disappeared. Thousands of bookmarks LOST! Yes, thousands. I was on the verge of tears. Links to stuff for school for my daughter, bills and financial, job search, scouting, health and welfare, etc. I used the "Undo delete" in the bookmarks manager and it did NOTHING!!!
I did a Google search for how to recover my bookmarks and found this discussion. I read through it and with your instructions as well as another (New Yawker)I got the folders you told me to look for unhidden, my bookmarks file saved and renamed on my hard drive then replaced it in the directory. End result, my bookmarks have been fully restored.
After I finished the process I sent all the information I gleaned from this discussion as well as the backed up bookmarks files in an e-mail to myself at both of my e-mail addresses for future reference in case this happens again. Thank you so much again for your expertise.
Now if only there were a fix like this to undo a corrupted bank register file or three years of unemployment life would be just peachy.
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||Sylvia Austin||1/30/13 6:33 AM|
I was having severe issues with Chrome for several days. It did an update and I lost everything but didn't notice it for a couple of weeks due to not having to go look for anything. Once I discovered it, it was too late. I remember Chrome shutting down and restarting by its damn self. I am furious to say the least.
You mentioned Exporting frequently and went into the menu *where did our freaking wrench go...and found no Export only Import. Now I am skittish about saving anything. I need to tell my friends before this happens again that one of the largest giants on the Internet Planets developers cannot or will not or both...devise a way for us to get them back REGARDLESS of what happens to lose them. After copy pasting the command line into Run, it went to the appropriate folder before the last / mark but sadly the folder did not contain a bookmarks or bookmarks bak folder. There is a single file called bookmarks but do not know which program to open it with when the box comes up. Or if it can even work.
There should just be an easy way to do this. Even Firefox, after a few hours I was able to find a file that had all my stuff when this same thing occurred. Why not go to the menu and just have something on the list that says BACK UP BOOKMARKS TO, then once its clicked, the save as box appears. Then we can put them in a folder WE designate. Hell I can make a folder if I want for my desktop that says Bookmark backup and do this once a week, getting rid of the old file each time. It seems when they do give us soothing , you have to jump through hoops to do it. Basic users do not even know how to follow a command line.
I do not want to go back to Firefox. I love my Chrome. This is ridiculous.

If you accidentally DO login and fire up Chrome and see that all your BMs are missing. You can log into google, click on more, even more. Then find the Web Section and click on bookmarks. On the left hand pane, go to Export Bookmarks, download the list in an HTML file. Then open up chrome and go to the Settings page find the Bookmark Manager. Click on Organize, import bookmarks from HTML file and there they are.

I was able to restore my bookmarks even after I closed and re-launched google chrome. After I punched in this link on XP
In the folder there were Bookmarks, Bookmarks.bak, and a bunch of other Bookmarks~(random digits).TMP files. [Not sure if y'all will have .TMP files.)
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||TGuy||3/15/13 3:40 AM|
Thanks beckygoesmoo for your input. For those who use xmarks, just go to tool and there will be an option to restore your bookmarks at an earlier stage. It stores that up to one year old I notice depending of how many timees you have made a synchro I guess!
It should work... and also untick the synchronize feature for Bookmarks on Chrome.
Hope you will recover all your bookmarks.

|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||Shieldsit||6/13/13 10:41 AM|
Ha, this just happened to me. I synced my old iPhone that hadn't been online in 6 months. Chrome thought it should use the 6 month old bookmarks and copied them to all my computers. What kind of shit is this? I didn't look into it until far too late to recover the .bak file. This seals it for me, I'd been using Chrome despite the lack of pinch to zoom on PC but if I can't even trust it to protect the shit I use everyday what good is it? To gain a few seconds of page rendering time? Nah, I'd rather use IE and know my bookmarks are safe than Chrome and go through this again.
And isn't it reassuring seeing all the helpful advice from Google? Why do Google groups even exist? They never help or even reply. I think they think that if we just get it out we'll feel better. But I don't feel better Google. Feel free to not respond, I've grown accustomed to it.

|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||Scott Dougall||7/2/13 4:36 AM|
I have just had this problem.
It started when I logged into my google account on another laptop - I logged out my account and noticed that the chrome browser on that laptop even though I was not logged out still had my bookmarks listed...
so I deleted them
when I went back to my Mac all my bookmarks were gone
I browsed into the Chrome folder in my Library and renamed bookmark.bak to bookmarks but although this seemed initially to work each time I launched chrome it re-deleted everything - even after I disconnected the mac from the internet...
I have managed to cope
first quit Chrome
then rename the .bak file once more
DO NOT START CHROME
I then went to Firefox and cleared its bookmarks out so it was as clean as I could get it...
from firefox I imported Chrome's bookmarks
this read the renamed file and imported all my bookmarks ok - quit Firefox...
launch Chrome and watch all your bookmarks dissapear for the last time...
import bookmarks from Firefox...
this worked but brought in others that you can carefully delete and its all back to normal
GOOGLE - FFS - this is a nightmare - when I log out another persons Mac - take away my bookmarks
let me restore them from the already created .bak file - its mine right - I should be able to use it - LET ME USE IT

|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||unFolded||9/22/13 8:36 AM|
Thanks, Bapabooiee, for your answer. Unfortunately, it's too late for me. All of my bookmarks vanished yesterday, in concert with Chrome upgrading itself. I was actually admiring the new tab page with my Chrome app bookmarks when it occurred to me that some of those links were ones I'd stopped using and I was missing some that I currently use.
Then, suddenly, a Google force took over and painted an old theme from 2 years ago on my browser -- and there on my bookmark bar were bookmarks from 2011 that I left on my old computer when I upgraded and did not import. It was like stepping into a time machine, which might have been nice if I wanted them, but they're mostly tech and outdated. The ones Chrome destroyed were timeless.
I'm so bummed...

|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||Prosad Sen||10/8/13 5:51 AM|
I feel really sorry for you Linda and others who lost all their long stored bookmarks. I went through the same feelings but then I remembered that my wife and I used to synchronize each others bookmarks, since both of us worked out of the same computer at home.
All I had to do is request my wife to login to my laptop with her chrome credentials and voila, I got all my bookmarks there. Just had to re-synchronize and took my first bookmarks html backup which I plan to do every week now. Chrome is anytime better than any browser for its surfing experience, apps and online synchronisation feature. Mozilla does not have the last one although it is quite good otherwise.
So friends, having an alternate gmail id is useful and sharing resources with your spouse is great(as long as there are no official confidentiality required)!

If renaming "Bookmarks.bak" to "Bookmarks" does not work then first of all backup "Bookmarks.bak" to some other folder and then stop chrome synchronization. For this go to Settings > Sign In (Stop Sync).
Now rename "Bookmarks.bak" to "Bookmarks" and then paste it to the Default folder mentioned above.
It worked for me :)
|Re: How can I restore my bookmarks||saumya yadav||10/24/13 11:10 PM|
we have to check the date on the Bookmarks.bak file to ensure it was created before you deleted your bookmarks. otherwise you are doomed. :-(.. at least i am as of today. so what's the strategy from here, create a notepad/doc file as well to save the pages along with respective bookmark folders?
