Are you kidding me? There's no answer for this? Is anyone from Google reading these forums? Is anyone who knows anything about Chrome actually reading these forums?
I have had this same problem. It just started a short time ago. There are no settings in Chrome Tools or Options to control this behavior. So how do we stop it?
When I click on a link on a browser page in Chrome, I would like Chrome simply to open that new link in the current tab. Instead, it opens a new tab. If I wanted it to open in a new tab I know I can hold down Ctrl-Shift while clicking on the link for that. But it is doing it now every time as if I were constantly holding down Ctrl-Shift when clicking on any link.
HELLO GOOGLE? Is anyone home?

If you have extensions, disable and test.

Look at your Chrome Toolbox Options. You might have forgot that you installed this extension.
It's under Setting (wrench icon) - Tools - Extensions. There you should see 'Chrome Toolbox Options'. It is an extension by Google. Click on Options under Chrome Toolbox Options. The second item under Tab is what your looking for.
Hope this helps.
It is a good idea to have Chrome Toolbox Options installed.

@rod19more: thanks for this post. its been bugging me that each link i click opens to a new tab.
i think i inadvertently change my settings without realizing it.
the extension that changes this is Chrome Toolbox (by Google). click options.
under general tab
unclick - "When clicking on a link, always open it in a new tab"

Well, I'm not using Chrome but the other day when I went over to the new format, I lost my homepage. Finally figured that out by searching for "setting your home page". Get this; now every time I click the little house in the upper right (home), I go to my home page, but also get a new tab that is titled "Set Your Home Page". Disabling the "Open new windows in a new tab instead" line in Options did not change this.
How do I fix THIS??

Rod19, thank you so much. I've been looking for this remedy for days. The hardest part of searching for the solution, was how to phrase the question. Thank goodness elarairah knew how to construct an understandable sentence. ;-)
