How do I save my Google Chrome favorites bookmarks in order to format the HDD? Blogul din Drumul Taberei 9/28/09 6:35 AM
Because of a very malicious virus I have to format the HDD with the well known effect of losing all data. So I need to keep safe my favorites links. I use two browsers, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer, but in Start/Favorites appears only the favorite links from Internet Explorer which (in my case) are different from the Google Chrome favorites.

Start > Favorites draw from IE Favorites folder.  If you want to back up your Chrome bookmarks, go to Wrench > Bookmark Manager > File > Export. You will export your bookmarks as bookmarks.html file.

Where do you find Wrench?

The Wrench icon is in the upper right corner of Chrome.

Thanks!  I didn't realize what that was for.  I'm new to Chrome, but it works so much better than IE.  I still have to use IE for a couple of applications that isn't supported by Chrome.  Have a wonderful day!

Changing the location of my favorites in chrome to a virtual location is awful!!!!  You can't even find a favorite by searching for it because it's not saved in something that a search can find....All's I wanted to do is to save my favorites file with a utility backup program.....It couldn't find it.... What the hell is it doing in a history file????.I'm finished with Chrome!!!!

Oh, and you might want to look-in to Xmarks. It'll allow you to (securely) sync your bookmarks to the Internet - between multiple browsers. It support Chrome, Firefox, Safari. So, if you ever run into computer troubles, you can reformat, and your bookmarks will all be safe (and encrypted) in The Cloud.

I use Xmarks to sync my bookmarks between multiple computers, and multiple browsers (Firefox and Chrome), and it works absolutely flawlessly. I am very sure you could use it for both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. If you did that, you would have your bookmarks securely stored online - and also have your bookmarks perfectly synchronized between your two browsers, so you would no longer have to juggle two different sets of bookmarks.

In any case, it looks like you already have your answer. So, good luck, and be sure to give Xmarks a try, since I'm sure it'll make your life a lot easier =]

"Favorites"  In IE are "bookmarks" in Chrome

If you visit a site and would like to save it (as if saving a favorite in IE), click the star icon to the left of your address bar. This will allow you to save your new link into your bookmarks, just like you did in IE-favorites.. you can change it's location, name the link, etc.

If you are having trouble finding one of your links in bookmarks:

Click the wrench icon in upper right corner of your browser
choose  "bookmark manager"

when that page opens you'll see all your bookmarks and a "search" box at the top where you can enter some wording to help you find a specific link

[I read through three or four of these but didn't read the whole page]
I updated to the newest version a week ago but after Wrench > Bookmark Manager > (then in a new window after clicking bookmark manager) I didn't see a file to click on to find import/export I clicked a few things and found that clicking "Organize" that appears right after BOOKMARK MANAGER in Bold near the top and is followed by a down arrow opened a long list of actions (that were all shaded) except the bottom two Import and Export bookmarks. I already tested it and it works great. So that's Wrench > Bookmark Manager > Organize > Export (or Import as need be). For those that can't find the wrench it's the symbol at the top right that looks like a ..wait for it...wrench..

If you need or want to save your bookmarks with a file backup program or just want to save them somewhere in particular, you need to go to, C:\documents and settings\YOUR user name\local settings\application data\google\chrome\user data\default\bookmarks.

I had a file 'IMPORTED FROM IE' on the tool bar which, when investigated, turned out to be my 'FAVOURITES' and now I have used the 'BOOKMARK MANAGER' to add the favourites folders to the task bar.  I am not very computer literate but have found Chrome to be a lot better to use over the last couple of weeks.  No doubt tho it is a bit confusing at first.  If I had not the help of my son I would have floundered a bit as sometimes the tech speak is not easy to understand on discussion pages.

But why change favourites to bookmarks in the first place...IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT!

To Take Back Up of your "Favourite links" well known as "Bookmarks" in Google Chrome Browser you have to follow these steps:

Step#1 Goto Wrench (Located On Top Right Corner of your Google Chrome Browser)
Step#2 Goto Bookmarks (a side bar menu will appear)
Step#3 Click on Bookmarks Manager (after clicking on Bookmarks Manager a new window will appear containing your favourite folders and links)
Step#4 Click on Organise (Located right below the "STAR" image)
When you click on Organise a dropdown menu then appears, On the very end of the dropdown menu you can find the options to Import & Export Bookmarks. Bookmarks are in HTML Format, Whenever you want to Import your bookmarks from your other browsers you would need to Import the HTML file located in your Favourites or Bookmarks folder.

You need to click on "organize" to find the export function.
