Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? ramparts 12/24/09 7:12 PM
I've switched over from Firefox to Chrome on OS X. So far so good, but I accidentally just pressed Apple-Q and lost all my stuff. I could reopen the tabs I closed, but I was typing graduate school applications and lost some of what I'd typed. One of the simple features in Firefox is that if you try to close a window with multiple tabs open, it warns you. Can Chrome do the same thing?
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? dwight.stegall 12/25/09 9:02 AM
no but it'snot necessary. in the options panel set "Reopen the pages that were open last" in the Basics Tab. When you open Chrome the pages you had when you closed chrome will still be there. Also you can right-click a tab and click on Reopen Closed Tab
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? dwight.stegall 12/25/09 9:03 AM
Reopen Closed Tab remembers up to 10 tabs at a time.
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? dwight.stegall 12/25/09 9:07 AM
If Chrome crashes it will remember what pages you had and TRY to open them again. But sometimes it forgets. No browser is perfect. :)

Hi Dwight - Thanks for the responses but I'd say it actually is necessary. As I said, I had a school application open and lost everything that I'd typed, just because I clicked Apple-Q by mistake. Just re-opening the closed tabs (which, as I mentioned, I was able to do) isn't everything. Firefox has a way around this, it seems like some pretty simple coding to add a warning box like that, so I hope Chrome developers will go ahead and implement something like this. I doubt I'm the only one who's had this problem.
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? jamesefrank 1/4/10 11:36 AM
I concur with ramparts here. You may be working on something in another tab (filling out a form, a blog post, etc.) and if you accidentally close the browser, just reopening the tabs won't get you back your saved data.  It's just happened twice in a row for me.

Please go vote for this feature here: http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/static.py?page=suggestions.cs.

Done. Thanks!
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? jasonvaritekfan 1/30/10 9:52 PM
Thanks for the link, QQFarmer! I wonder how many Chrome users have requested Chrome to display a warming when closing the browser when multiple tabs are opened.
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? MaggeeB 2/6/10 8:40 AM
I agree that ESPECIALLY if you have multiple tabs open that they could at least give an OPTION to be warned when closing any tab!
I just had a full page of code written and one slip of the finger and its ALL gone!
Opening up a tab will NOT get that back.  When working in some of the social networks it does not give you an option to undo... or to save you end up working with a big block of code which is not fun.  If one does not periodically copy it to a outside document then its all LOST!  I guess I will have to get in the habit of doing that BUT why should I???  I can use IE and it will WARN ME!

Just give us the OPTION, no one says everyone has to use it.
Thanks!
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? ramparts 2/26/10 11:05 AM
Thanks Sohail, I added that code but it's not the best. It frequently gives you a hard time even when you're just closing one tab, for some reason, not the best coded.

People, go vote to have this feature added!!

Looking at the length of time that this issue has been around, and the apparent refusal of the developers to "fix" it, might lead one to guess that maybe the developers don't know how? Can't fix it?
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=147 is marked as a "WontFix", maybe that should be changed to "CANTFIX"...

I don't know how (not a developer), so I can't fix it... If I could, I would...
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? Logeshwaran 7/6/10 2:58 AM
Go to the options menu in chrome. Click the Basics tab in the window that opens. choose reopen the last pages that were last open.
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? ramparts 7/6/10 5:30 AM
Logeshwaran - As has been stated here by several people (including several versions of me), that's not really a solution. You can still lose very important information in forms, etc., that doesn't come back when you re-open the tabs.
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? DaviGmail321 7/6/10 7:05 AM
It really is fascinating (okay, not really) the number of folks, both here and on the thread/issue I linked to, who appear to NOT be reading the responses. For now, I'm opening new windows/instances instead of new tabs...
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? rebeculus 9/22/10 6:04 PM
I downloaded the extension referenced above (ttp://jaxov.com/2010/02/how-to-get-warned-before-closing-multiple-tabs-in-google-chrome/) which indicates it's for Chrome 4.0. I have Chrome 6.something. I installed the extension and it does not seem to work at all!

I guess there's still no solution to this issue? :-(
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? AlysonRR 10/7/10 5:42 PM
I'm another user who will unfortunately be going back to Firefox because of the absence of a feature to notify me when I am (almost always inadvertently!) closing multiple tabs.  I like absolutely everything else about Google Chrome, but this issue is a deal-breaker for me.
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? asbaker 10/7/10 7:31 PM
Is there a way to make clicking links open in a new Window instead of a new Tab? That would help. It's the way it used to be in the old days! Then we didn't lose other open windows by accident.
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? DaviGmail321 10/7/10 7:35 PM
@asbaker Sure, right click all your links, then select from the menu that appears...

Still doesn't address the underlying issue though, does it?
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? wdurham 10/8/10 10:10 AM
Yes, asbaker - right click the link and choose New Tab or New Window. How could it be easier?

Frankly, anyone who clicks the close box in a, entire window which contains multiple tabs surely MUST know what they are doing? There is no need to go anywhere near that close box unless you want to close your window, because each tab has its OWN close box.

I rather think Chrome relies on its users to be grown-ups who know what they are doing.  If you are not a grown-up, why not go back to Internet Explorer and its eternal "Are you sure?"

If this sounds cynical and smart-ass then I am sorry, but I have been using Chrome ever since it became available and have never inadvertently closed an entire window full of tabs because I know what a Windows close box actually does.
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? rebeculus 10/8/10 12:18 PM
It does sound smart-ass. Congratulations on being a "grown-up."

If a person is used to opening new WINDOWs instead of new tabs, then they are also used to CLOSING new windows to return to the original window when they're finished. It seems pretty logical that it would be difficult to transition to a new way of doing things if you've been navigating and clicking around the same way for years, especially if you're quick.

Why this is difficult for you to understand, "grown-up," is beyond me.

Seems to me the only ways to address this issue, since a warning message for some inexplicable reason was NOT built into Google Chrome, are to either (A) go back to the browser you were previously using or (B) just keep using Google Chrome and accidentally closing windows with multiple tabs until you get used to doing things differently.

I've been using only Chrome for a couple weeks now and even though my behavior was always to open new windows and then close them when finished, I am slowly changing that behavior to adjust to tabs. When I have the opportunity, I definitely right-click a link and open it in a new window though.
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? adam.solomon 10/8/10 12:43 PM
wdurham - you have joined a long list of people (well, 3 or 4) who have responded to this thread without reading the rather short first post :) This may be less of a problem in Windows, but in Mac, it's not hard to type Apple-Q (which closes a program) when you meant to type Apple-W (which closes a tab), since the two keys are right next to each other.

(I'm the OP, by the way, under different cover.)
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? DaviGmail321 10/8/10 1:26 PM
I really "like" wdurham's "never inadvertently closed an entire window full of tabs"...

Must be nice to be PERFECT, eh?
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? Anthony Ai Quoc 10/8/10 5:45 PM
@AlysonRR please try the Window Close Protector extension.  I think it is quite satisfactory.

Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? Magnum_2007 11/22/10 3:40 AM
The simple answer what most of the people don't know is that close chrome. When you reopen chrome next time, press "Ctrl+Shift+T". There you go...
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? themishnish 12/8/10 7:43 AM
I need a warning note before closing Chrome window/tabs. It has happened with me many times when I've lost much work due to just accidental click at the close mark. Reopening those pages again won't help at all. I just want to PREVENT closing my open tabs.
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? wdurham 12/8/10 9:53 AM
Try one of the several extensions that put up an "Are you sure?" type of warning when you close the whole Chrome window.

Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? ianozia 12/12/10 9:22 PM
I'm a fan of chrome, sadly after dealing with this issue for several months, I'm forced to return to firefox.  I love chrome's ability to manage each tab as a process, which is why I use, as I usually have about twenty or more tabs open at a time.  Well, I ended up opening a new window for one reason or another and forgot about it, then I closed out my "main" chrome window with all of my saved tabs/websites (since chrome usually loads them back when I re-open the session), but it simply closed out, loosing all of those tabs and revealing the other window I opened earlier.

This caused me to loose all of my previous tabs.  In firefox, it would have warned me of such a mistake, and I would have been able to notice/close that second window before closing/saving my "main" chrome window.

I tried the extension that was posted here, but sadly it does not work with the new version of chrome.  I hope the developers will consider this much-needed feature.

Yes, we are adults, I agree with you that chrome has no obligation to hand hold.  Unfortunately, we are also HUMAN adults, so we make mistakes.  I have accidentally closed my windows using my trackpad.  Personally, I don't see a reason why they shouldn't have an option, even if it comes disabled by default.  I get annoyed 99 times out of 100 when Firefox asks me if I really want to close, but that one time I DON'T want it to close, I'm glad I have it.  And the great thing is, Firefox will let you turn off the feature if it gets too annoying.

try chrome toolbox. (it's an extenstion) it has an option that you can check off to make chrome give you a warning before you close multiple tabs.

here's a website that shows you how to check off the right options

I have read every thread here with the exception of a few people here. I know the frustration of what every one is here's going through. I am about to try this and see if its good or not. This is one reason why i hate chrome. I need all my tabs sometimes saved and quit. lets try this. be right back.
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? Dannynyc17 2/12/11 5:15 PM
NICEEEE!!!! it works smooth. I am always a secret readers of forum and just seeing people being solved. YAY today i can contribute and say this product works. lol. Yes I am real person and yes Google had made the internet a bit much better than the other browsers. :-)

Chrome is awesome !!!
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? Phette23 3/18/11 10:50 AM
I haven't tried Chrome toolbox but I'm glad someone out there addressed this issue.

There is another solution built into the browser, at least as of Chrome 10. Type "about:flags" into the address bar to see the experimental features and they check off Confirm to Quit. It's not quite the same as "warn when closing multiple tabs" because this will warn you even if you're closing only one tab, but it's a great solution and it shows that the developers really are paying attention to people. Again, it's experimental, so I cannot guarantee it works all the time (then again, most extensions aren't really guaranteed either), but a lot of things in the flags section eventually make their way into standard features.

THIS THREAD DOES NOT HELP AT ALL IF YOU HAVE MAC OS.
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? Pravin Paratey 5/12/11 3:05 PM
SOLUTION

1. Type about:flags in a new tab

2. Scroll down to "Confirm to Quit"

3. Click enable

4. Restart browser

This can be done by Chrome Toolbox - install it in 2 steps! Works wonderfully!!!

Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? knk2006 8/27/11 7:03 PM
I must say it's necessary, take this scenario as an example, you have opened a webpage which contains a video that you would like to watch. Your  connection is not that good at the moment, so you left it to stream while browsing your twitter. You got sick of twitter and accidently closed the browser, while you actually want to close that tab only, twitter that is. Now you lost all your bandwidth and time !
< it's not a fictional scenario, it just happened to me :)

This is not rocket science GOOGLE... geez, you got to be kidding me that you don't have this simple tool needed to protect your tab and the information you have created in that tab.... Is it that hard to make this fix. It seems like this would be so easy to do!
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? kbz10 1/9/12 11:09 AM
This topic is now more than two years old, and Google still has not addressed this very basic feature that is present in other browsers.

Unfortunately, this seems to be par for the course with Google. The ability to have Google Navigator on Droid phones repeat the instructions that the voice just spoke has been on similar problem logs with similar links to useless voting sites and also completely ignored for multiple years. I don't think Google really pays any attention to these boards, since these sorts of things go on and on for years with no improvement.
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? Raj_1 1/29/12 6:12 PM
I am planning to stop using Crome .. as this is one the missing features which is quite a pain... i have closed all tabs multiple times .. it is time google added this ..
Re: Can Chrome warn me before closing multiple tabs? MSal 5/8/12 3:43 PM
Just add an extension to fix this. Its really quick. Just go to settings, extensions then get extensions. Search toolbox and its the first one and is by google.
