Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? wabob 12/10/09 4:25 AM
I am using Chrome 3, and like it, except for one feature of Internet Explorer: you can open the "favorites" tab and dock it to the side of the screen. This is a helpful addition to the bookmarks toolbar. I would like to open a bookmarks folder and dock it to the side of the screen, but I have not seen how to do this with Google Chrome. Is there a way?

after you fill up the bookmarks toolbar one of those will appear
Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? wabob 12/10/09 5:43 AM
Not true. When you fill up the toolbar, the new links just disappear to the right. I want to keep a list of bookmarks in display all the time.

That is the one feature that is keeping me from using chrome full time. In firefox I always keep my bookmarks docked to the left of my screen for easy access since you can quickly search without having to switch windows and/or click links that are visible.

Check the Google Chrome Extensions Gallery periodically. Maybe someone is already working on an extension like that.

I searched through it but nothing yet. Hopefully someone will post something or Google decides to add this useful feature.

Anyone found a workaround?

Seems at the moment, the best possible solution to your problem is Chromy: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/mfhnlgcnlpbbjecojebcfdleiapicaio.
Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? mot_guy 1/15/10 11:33 AM
Sorry but Chromy does nothing related to what is being asked in this thread.

@mot_guy, take it easy. Please read my post carefully before commenting on it. How do you know that "Chromy does nothing related to what is being asked in this thread"?
Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? mot_guy 1/15/10 5:47 PM
Did I say something wrong? I installed Chromy and it didn't do what was being asked.

Still looking for a solution.

Yet another example of how Chrome ignores the best bits of other browsers just because Google thinks it knows best.
Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? Going loco 4/28/10 1:05 PM
Need to add something - I have hundreds of bookmarks and they are not for fun, they are vital to my life because I am a private investor. I NEED all my charts, stock data screens, Forex tables, etc. etc. at my fingertips in seconds. In Firefox that is what I get - all my bookmarks, carefully named and sorted in exactly the hierarchy I need, always there on the left of the screen. I know where everything is and because of my highly developed folder structure I can find anything I want in about 2 seconds flat. In Chrome it's a nightmare, working slowly through a series of opening mini-windows, and if I get my mouse move wrong by even the smallest amount it's back to square 1. Not good if a move is developing quickly, particularly in Forex.

Sorry Chrome team, I keep trying it but until I can run my bookmarks the same as Firefox I'm staying where I am.

C'mon Google, this is a fairly easy thing to add, At least make it available as a plug-in.

Staying with Firefox as it works bit bookmarks much better.

@going loco

Exactly right.

It's unbelievably absurd that Chrome is launching version 6 and it is STILL impossible to dock favorites / bookmarks on the left, or sort them from the context menu for that matter...

I don't get how such a capable development organization could continue to ignore such a fundamental user need that is so easy to provide and leaves them with a huge competitive workflow deficiency...

crazy.... headslap... back to IE
Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? mot_guy 8/22/10 12:57 PM
Unbelievable, I'd love to see who their focus groups are and why they aren't asking for this feature as well.
Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? QQFarmer 8/22/10 1:10 PM
8 months later, there's still no extension to make the OP happy (~~~~(>_<)~~~) but I hear that developers at Google have been working on something called "Sidebar" where you can dump everything from tabs to bookmarks....

@anuoldman, Google has always taken a minimalistic appproach to the design of its browser. That's what they say and that's what they do. I like that because there's something uniquely human and intuitive in Google's kind of thinking....

Bookmarks are very bad for Google, bookmarks mean less searching, and that means less clicks and less revenue for Google. It would take 5 minutes for Google develop and add a docking bookmarks options, but it is trying its best to discourage the use bookmarks.  As the internet mature and we start to understand the net and where the best sites are, search engines are becoming less relevant, therefore google is losing some of its earnings power. And this is why firefox and internet explorer are designed to be more user friendly.

I'm SO disappointed that I can't display bookmarks on the left. Chrome has some great features but without this basic functionality, I really can't work efficiently. What a bummer.
Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? mot_guy 11/30/10 10:49 AM
Google, add this feature. We still use you for other searches but a search based dockable bookmark sidebar is much needed to make me and other use your browser full time. Currently using Firefox 4 beta so I hope it's not too late when you add this feature to make me consider switching again.
Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? tmcgonegal 12/6/10 2:25 PM
Just downloaded version 8.0.552.215 on 12/6/2010. Still no bookmarks sidebar.

I will now uninstall Chrome (AGAIN!) and return to Firefox. The bookmarks sidebar on the left side of the screen is a requirement for me. Sorry Google.

yep same here too. after using chrome for 2 days i'm back to firefox, even though i dislike it for many reasons--I'd still use firefox

solely

becasue of the side-docked bookmark bar features.

I have carpel tunnel(i'm sure alot of you do as well) I just cannot be bothered to hold my mouse and scroll down the list until i find what i want.

I will go for any UI that requires least clicks possible..

google tries to make the UI minimal but it's a fallacy that minimal UI is simpler. I stay away from their products b/c it always takes me twice as much time to get to know  and to navigate than others products, ie. firefox and apple.

I'm getting off chrome until they have the side-docked bookmark bar feature..

Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? justmyopine 4/16/11 10:07 AM
Just installed Chrome 10 today and this is the first lacking feature I noticed.  My solution for now is to Pin the Bookmark Manager so I'm one click away from seeing all of my bookmarks.  Not a bad workaround really.  I'm there with one click and it frees up some screen real estate from my browser windows.
Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? MarkDuffy 4/23/11 5:09 AM
Must be me but I do not quickly see how justmyupin got to pin.
I started looking for a means to get to my bookmarks quickly in Chrome. I am a Chrome user. Why -- I like the company.   I used to use FireFox.
I  agree with  Lelo919 there is a philosophy in Google to have a clean screen.  This I good if it is a web page but I see Google as an application to get to web pages so I need access to my bookmarks. if there is a quicker way and there is no strong counter reason to stay then I will use FireFox.

Going loco (entry above) perfectly sums up the advantages.

Chrome is not a piece of art it is a workhorse.

I'm with a lot of others here. I won't use Chrome until I can dock my bookmarks on the left. Back to Firefox. I'll test it again in a few months time.
Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? Jean Chang 11/11/11 12:18 PM
I just installed Chrome, hoping it was going to be faster, better--something!  However, the first thing I noticed is that the bookmarks cannot be docked on the side!  Aaarrghhh... What is the point of all the blank screen real estate on either side?  I miss my bookmarks.  Count me in as one saying, "Goodbye, Chrome, back to Firefox after only 15 minutes trial."
Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? mot_guy 11/11/11 2:45 PM
Pretty sad that a modern browser doesn't implement such a simple user interface enhancement. At least allow it as an add-on.

I also tried Chrome, but quickly gave up on it when I could not pin my favorites/bookmarks on the left.  I have a 25" monitor with plenty of space for a two inch wide column that displays the few dozen sites I use constantly.  It's crazy Chrome doesn't offer this useful function.  For me, it's a deal killer.

Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? willjones777 2/1/12 11:14 AM
Here's a fairly simple workaround...  Open two browsers.  In one, click the Wrench icon then click Bookmarks and then Bookmark Manager.  It brings up a window with all the bookmarks in their folders laid out.  Resize this window to about 1/3 the width of your monitor's screen size.  Then size your other browser window to fill the rest of the space.

Whenever you want to open a bookmark, right click and say open in new tab.  Then you can click on that tab and drag drop it into your other browser.  There is also an Open in New Window option if you wanted to do it that way. This also works for browsing History on the left and working on the right.  Granted this is a work around and not ideal, but it is an option.

FYI... I searched the extension add-on documentation and I don't think "docking" is actually possible in Chrome.  However, I was thinking you might be able to simulate something like this from your extension's background page via page injection of an iframe on every newly opened tab.  The iframed content on the left could contain a minimize or close button that would simultaneously minimize or close the bookmarking or history info or whatever docked info you have, on all the tab instances.  This could be do-able if the extension were given access permission to all tabs.  Just brain-storming how it might work.  :)   ...  If I get time I may play with making something like this.

I've ditched chrome.

This has been requested a zillion times, here:

http://royal.pingdom.com/2010/10/13/please-add-a-bookmarks-sidebar-to-chrome/

I can only add my voice to the chorus. I wont be installing chrome until this happens, in the meantime, google "Chrome+" by COOLNOVO. Based on Chromium, still in Beta, but has a bookmark sidebar. I'm using that.

If Google dosn't get it together fast, COOLNOVO will overtake them :-)

Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? rhjames 7/12/12 1:21 AM
I gave Chrome away last year because it would dock the bookmarks permanently. I decided to try it again this week, because such a basic thing must be fixed by now.

I can't believe it - they still can't be docked. I've gone back to firefox - it's a bit slower to open, but much faster and easier to use the bookmarks.

Am I missing something? Chrome must have very few users, just because of this stupid deletion.

Here's how to add a website URL to your computer Chrome bookmark folders from an Android device.

Open a URL in your phone > tap Menu > tap the outlined Star icon > change the file name if desired > tap the IN field with the down right diagonal arrow to the right > select a desired Bookmark Folder > OK > SAVE

Is there any forum that's read by the google team? Someone needs to write a letter to them or something!!! This is SERIOUS.
Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? Piers Addison 11/26/12 9:35 PM
This is the best solution to date, and it can be simplified by simply having it in a new tab rather than a new window.
Re: Is there a way to display bookmarks at the side of the screen, like Internet Explorer? Hey yo 11/30/12 10:08 AM
this is ridiculous
