Hello,

You can't change colours within Google Chrome yet.

Hello,

Chromium is a free open source product, why wont you download the source and try to make a module which is customizable. Currently, that isn't the priority.  We love feature requests, while the engineers are hard at work making a stable and high quality product, the source is open for you to explore.

If you wish to explore, the theme project is located under src\chrome\app\theme, make sure you keep the dimensions of the images. If you want to go an extra step, you can do a theme changer, and submit it as a patch with a detailed design document explaining what you did and it might merged into the next build!

Good Luck

I found a default theme file that changes the header to black. The rest is still the same. It gets rid of that garish blue thing, anyway.

Imaginary new Ford vehicle:

Customer, "wow, this car has a great design, wait, wheres the air conditioner?"

Ford, "Um, we thought better of adding one, but here's an idea, go build one yourself and add it on!"

Customer, "But I just want to drive the car not build one...."
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome pharesg 12/31/08 9:31 AM
Also, I've tried some of the themes out there and so far they just F up the browser entirely. I mean common, at least allow us to change the color on the fly, how hard can that be? A simple toggle button and #FFFFFFF versus #87DFHGY or what ever the underlying code for color is. I think you guys forgot to tie your shoelace here.

Let's go a bit farther with your exceptional analogy pharesg...
Ford, "I'm sorry you feel that way, we are doing our best to meet your needs."

Customer, "This is appalling, I want my money back!"

Ford, "The car was free...you didn't spend any money to get it...we GAVE it to you."

Customer, "Oh...yeah I forgot...I guess it's pretty ridiculous to berate companies for not including peripheral features in my FREE product."

Ford, "Well I can't say anything officially, but if I wasn't the company spokesperson, I'd call you an absolute idiot"

Customer, "And you'd be right..."
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome niraj2709 1/3/09 8:20 PM
its because google wants  us to browse in their style (speed unlimited), not in our style !!!
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome pharesg 1/5/09 10:27 AM
Ok, Rockemsock, not the best analogy Ill admit, though I see you too like most forum users cannot convey an opinion without the use of the word idiot, etc. But really, in a world of free browsers, this would be helpful in helping chrome stand out. Telling users they are stupid for expecting things is a little ignorant in and of it self...
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome Critesjm 1/5/09 4:57 PM
They aren't calling users stupid for expecting things. Other users are. You're expecting all the bells and whistles on a FREE product that just got out of beta from a company that, rather obviously, enjoys a standard theme across all of their products, and last I checked, GOOGLE Chrome, is still a Google product.

I mean seriously, why can't you be grateful that you have free access to the fastest browser out there without complaining about what you haven't been given?
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome exzackly 1/5/09 6:17 PM
I'm just curious why there are so many people complaining about the browser.  Why don't you just download another?  It's amazing.  Chrome is entirely new, from the ground up.  How can anyone expect such a project to please everyone this early in it's development?  It's free, it's fast, and it will certainly grow to be one of the best.  Just give'em time.  If you can't do that, just stick with turdzilla.  Complaining and griping only wastes the time of those searching the forums for help.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome Mohamed Mansour 1/5/09 7:22 PM
Patience my friends... Patience... Chromium Engineers know about this issue, and they are working on a feature where you can change colours. So once again, patience is a virtue in life. Don't forget that.

Stop complaining about what we are doing, I, myself, whenever I have free time, contribute to the Chromium project. And it is kind of disrespectful seeing some of the comments here about what we are doing, and flaming this open source project. Many people like me, work in our spare time, fixing bugs and introducing new features. I am not part of Google, I am just a contributor that I really believe this product will be far the best browser among all others. Remember, Google Chrome i just a couple months old, other browsers have been around for many years, and you have to realize Software is never perfect. You will see bugs, stuff you don't like, stuff that are missing. That is the beauty of an open source project, you can communicate directly with the developers and discuss about future features in a respected fashion.

If you have any issues regarding this browser, either 'Report a bug' from the browser, or report it in the issue tracker http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/list, remember before reporting the issue, make sure it doesn't exist by doing simple searches. If it does exist, Click on the star, that star grabs attention to the team. Personally, I have attempted to fix around 23 bugs, small bugs which were annoying, the way I knew about those bugs was from that issue tracker. And I just picked one of the known ones and fixed it.

If your a software developer or engineer, and would like to help this chromium browser, make sure to read this, http://dev.chromium.org/developers, it has been almost a month since I started hacking my way into chromium. It is a big codebase which is changing daily. It is very nicely organized which made want to explore it more! Best of all, you will learn from one of the best developers in the world, Google Engineers. I initially didn't know that much C++ just a little, and I am improving my skills every day I am working on this product thanks to all the patient Google developers (pkasting, sky, maruel, ben) who helped and criticized!

So be patient, help out, programming doesn't just happen with just a few clicks, it takes.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome Shawn (Googler) 1/22/09 8:07 PM
Jumping in on this...there are a lot of features we hear all of you request and we're working hard on every aspect of the product, whether it be performance, stability, features etc etc. So please be patient as we sort through prioritizing these things or if you feel inspired jump in on Chromium as well.

Props to people like Mohamed Mansour and everyone else contributing to Chromium. I actually think it's really awesome that the community is helping to shape the browser and offering their own flavor here and there. Thanks m0!

Final note, while we welcome all opinions, please remember to keep it positive in the forum.

Cheers!
Shawn

Here is another revision to pharesg's analogy

"Imaginary new Ford vehicle:

Customer, "wow, this car has a great design, but I don't like the color."

Ford, "Well, we haven't gotten any new colors yet, but you can paint it yourself, or there are a couple people who will paint it for free. Right now we are working on getting all of the bugs fixed, before we add more features."
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome Critesjm 2/15/09 8:03 PM
The way Ford did it in the beginning:

"You can have any color you want as long as it's black."

I win.

As of this weekend, applying themes to Chrome is possible (its on the works). The infrastructure has been built, and expect it in beta/dev soon :)
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome 8ball 5/11/09 8:29 AM
it's not a good Idea to push unnecessary features into chrome!, what's wrong with the blue color?
I suggest you look more at the webpage and less at the interface, isn't it the idea behind the Chrome browser?
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome laurie53 5/23/09 2:19 AM
The feature is only unnecessary if you have perfect vision.

I have difficulty with certain colours and the ability to pick my own colour is important to me.   I have used Chrome as my browser of choice since day one, but for some websites I have to use another browser.

Why should Google make it difficult for me to use their browser just because I have a minor disability?

In some countries of the world this is illegal.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome ezioconstantine 5/30/09 3:02 PM
@8ball

I'm not trying to shoot your answer down, but I think it depends on everyone's personal tastes. I know for a fact that there many people in the world who love customization.

So I guess, the ability to change Google Chrome's color interface is a choice that's can be optional to people, you don't really have to change the colors if you don't want to..
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome Dennis9384 6/11/09 7:02 AM
For many thousands and thousands of people Chrome is unusable because of this ridiculous baby blue background.  I'm one of them... I'd love to use Chrome but the color is absolutely unacceptable.

You should all realize this is a *BIG* deal. If Chrome is to catch on and gain popularity then such an obvious & annoying thing like this should have been fixed on DAY ONE. What was the logic behind deciding that Chrome should override my default XP theme (which is dark) with this glowing blue *annoyance*? Pssst: I prefer not to be annoyed when browsing the net... you expect me to stare at this color for hours a day?

I think without question this annoying baby blue is the #1 negative factor affecting how many people use Chrome. This -will- affect Chrome's share of the market. IE and Firefox don't override XP's theme. It's a no-brainer. We're talking about 30 seconds worth of coding to please a significant percentage of users.

This should be a TOP priority.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome Amiaturtle 6/15/09 5:50 PM
I wanna say thanks to the contributors and producers of Chrome, a free browser that allows me to surf the web.  Thank you all.  As I read above I guess there is no other color at the moment that we can use, but seems as if they are working on the issue.  Thanks and we'll wait for the developer theme enhancements to come on, because I do not want to use a third party.  Thank you all and have a good one.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome hankn40962 8/12/09 5:47 PM
if you want to change the color (in Vista) all you have to do is go to Appearance and Personalization in the Control Panel.  Click Personalization.  Then Windows Color and Appearance.  Click on the Open Classic Appearance Properties For More Color Options link.  Pick a new Color Scheme and Chrome will change from that ugly blue.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome †Tommy G.† 8/12/09 6:05 PM
Or, if you are not using Vista, upgrade to the beta version of Chrome 3.0.195.6 and get themes from the option menu.

Changing Background Colour with a Bookmarklet

Right click the 'bookmarks bar' and select bookmark manager.

Right click the main pane of the popup and select 'add page'

Into the 'Name' field type 'Page Color' {You can name it anything you like}

Into the 'URL' field copy the following:

javascript:if(frames.length<1){void(document.bgColor=prompt('Change to which background color?',''))}else{alert('Page has frames. Use the version of this bookmarklet for frames. (bookmarklets.com)')}

Press ok, and perhaps move the resulting bookmark up to the top of your bookmark list for accessibility.

Same can be done for body text color with the same instructions but with the following:

javascript:if(frames.length<1){void(document.body.style.color=prompt('Change to which foreground color?',''))}else{alert('Page has frames. Use the version of this bookmarklet for frames. (bookmarklets.com)')}

Sit back and be amazed!
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome SunWuKong 9/21/09 12:02 AM
Visit this site

https://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/color.html

then drag 'invert lightness' to the bookmark bar for easy access. This is a quick and easy way to flip most pages, framed or un-framed, without too much hassle. The result is usually more legible.

on the top where there is the search bar, on the right there are two symbols- a page sign and a wrench sign
click on the wrench sign and go to options
in options, on the top, there are three pages- basics, personal stuff, and under the hood
click on personal stuff
on the bottom where it says themes, click on get themes
and pick one
glad to help!~

Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome VYL 2/1/10 7:22 AM
I have the Glow theme on my desktop, which used to be all black with various colors "glowing' over the top, sort of like the Northern Lights. Here are my issues:

1. this theme never showed the thumbnails of frequent pages on the new tabs page;
2. This version of Chrome (3.X) did not automatically update.
3. When I saw the update on my laptop, I updated (to 4.X) on the desktop. However, now my Glow theme is blue, not black, around the bookmarks bar and the url/nav icons. The tops of the tabs themselves are still black.

How do I get back to the original black Glow, and how do I get my frequent pages to show up on the new tab page? thx.

I just installed this yesterday.

Found a great theme I liked, only problem was it had this nasty purple background color. I thought no problem I will just pick a color more to my liking.  Started looking for help then found this forum.  See that this issue was raised 15 months ago, then you have google employee and top contributors telling you to be patient and what do you expect from a free product.

Sorry, but I'm not that patient. Back to IE - BTW its free too.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome jrssd 3/8/10 3:06 PM
I have a different take on this - it's all about expectations. Users expect a certain amount of polish and professionalism in software now. Users expect a program to work well (Chrome does) but they also expect it to look good.

Part of "looking good" is the ability to make it look "better". Why the proliferation of skins and themes? Because each user knows in his/her heart that they alone know what looks best! I'd guess that it's easy to change the interface on at least half of the latest and hottest programs, even those written by a single developer working alone.

So when a behemoth like Google releases a browser intended to compete against heavyweights like IE and FF, users expect a LOT (I certainly did). To be perfectly honest Chrome needed more development before it was released. I'm not saying Chrome won't be a good, even great browser some day, but it isn't ready for prime time FROM GOOGLE.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome amorelle 3/26/10 9:59 AM
I really enjoy the browser - I've used it almost constantly since I downloaded it a couple of weeks ago.

But if it's going to give me migraines every single day, then I can't use it. I'm on the computer all day long and the bright white
is just KILLING me.

I appreciate the fact that it's free and does so much, but if it blinds me it's hardly worth it. It just doesn't seem like it would be THAT big a fix.

I've tried 4-5 themes - they don't change the bright white background - they just change everything else.

I dragged the little invert thingy to the bookmark bar and it changed the page I was ON. It's a PITA to do that to every single page.

I don't WANT a theme - I'm not here to play. I don't really care what color the tabs and bars are up at the top, but I really care about the part I'm staring at 14 hours a day.

I'm not trying to be a PITA - I'm trying to figure a way I can continue to use Chrome.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome daygeee 3/31/10 1:46 PM
Hi all,
Had this same problem till last night. Except google chrome, nothing on my computer had a white background. Now i'm typing on a black google background with brown links, grey font colour that fits my computer colour and theme ... all i need to make myself comfortable; and yes, on GOOGLE CHROME!!! How did i do this? Ummm... (lol). It's a chrome extension called "change colours". Just hit ur wrench icon, go to extensions, click "get more extensions" and enter the text "change colours" in the search box. When installed, it comes out like the "invert lightness" suggested earlier (ewww, no offense intended), but it can be tweaked. After installation, click options, click the colour code in front of any of the items (you could click the colour code in front of background colour for example) and click different areas of the colour spectrum that pops up, to find a suitable colour, then edit the depth of the colour. No more retina killing white background. Thanks google. Now i can concentrate on one browser, and change my homepage back from cuil. One more thing, this can be applied to all web pages at once, including the home page. Can't remember how though. It's an option somewhere. I'm a final year student with tons of work, can't search for that at the time of this post, but it's pretty easy to find... somewhere... Enjoy people.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome daygeee 3/31/10 2:19 PM
Ok, I found the option to apply "change colours" to all pages. A single click (left or trackpad) on the change colours icon in the omnibar (address bar, whatever) presents you with this option, i think it's the last option in the menu produced upon a left click. It's a pity this extension was found earlier but not shared by those who found it. It has several reviews already. Not nice!
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome vinylman 4/2/10 5:26 PM
I am trying chrome for the first time because i was getting tired of seeing "Oops how embarrassing would you like to restore or start new". Sure i would like to be able to change my colors and fonts thats how i came across the forum, but i'd rather even more that it does not crash. I can wait on more features as long as it stays stable.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome henrywu21 4/8/10 3:36 PM
Thanks for Chrome extension "Change Colors", it's the best way to change background/foreground color I found:

1. goto "https://chrome.google.com/extensions";
2. search extensions "Change Colors";
3. install;
4. will see "Change colors" icon at end of url field;
5. click icon to apply/remove your color options;
6. right click, then "Options" to config your color options;
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome optical10 4/22/10 7:06 AM
This issue isn't over by installing the "change colours" extension but it is a good start.
As a visually impaired user with high contrast eyes sensitivity issues I rely on a dark background with lighter fonts to allow me to browse the web. So for many years I relied on the "Black High Contrast" Windows theme but with the visual enhancements in Windows 7 of aero peak I was tempted to install custom dark themes but of course they do not change webpages like the "Black High Contrast" Windows theme does. Disability/accessibility shouldn't mean you have to compromise on athletics.

Getting to the point, "change colours" extension , like the "Black High Contrast" Windows theme effects too many elements in a web page reducing its functionality. Let me explain. Web designers have a tough time granted but in my experience researching this issue with regard to CSS (custom stylesheets) inconsistent Web Page design means that when you apply CC extension or BHC theme it obscures certain colours that are used for functionality in elements like arrow keys, instructional hover over entry buttons etc because they have been encoded  in the background rather than using a image on the foreground. I am no web designer so my explanation may be a little off but you can follow my thread at Opera forums (search using my username optical10) where more knowledgeable people have wrestled with this issue. Also at the colorHunter.com website you can see this issue visualised comparing the CC extension to the standard authors view version.

The above issue means Google Chrome, like any other web browser needs to allow  users to apply CSS stylesheets that users have invested a lot of time and effort compiling over the years to arrest this problem. Even after years of being told that web design would have to  incorporate disability/accessibility from the get go to solve this problem I currently have to rely on four CSS stylesheets every day over 12+ hours , with the option to be able to edit individual webpages on-the-fly to live with this issue.

Extensions like CC or dark themes like Windows BHC our a unfortunate and necessary sledgehammer solution to crack a difficult and complex nut which people mistakenly think is not complex. If the website designer has not taken disability/accessibility into consideration right at the beginning of construction I believe it is a nightmare to correct further down the line. Also the client who commission the websites need to be disability friendly so as not to give the web designer a hard time if they do take accessibility into consideration which then compromises the final result.

I do remember reading that Google chrome will eventually allow users CSS style sheets integration but in the meantime, if I recall correctly, individuals are working on it  as we speak in other forums.

Due to the sledgehammer effect I personally am not applying CC extension to all webpages for the above reasons but @ daygeee thank you for an excellent find, how on earth did  you stumble upon the icon/symbol in the URL bar? I had actually installed the CC extension but having not used Google chrome for a while I'd forgotten it was installed and because I hadn't applied it to all webpages I went on another search for a permanent solution & stumbled upon this thread so thanks for the reminder.

Will user defined CSS stylesheets slow Google chrome down, I don't know, maybe web designers reading this can answer the question so as to see if this is the reason Google is reluctant to allow them presently? In the meantime I will keep on checking this thread, amongst others, whilst using other browsers with disabilities/accessibility functionality given a higher priority than chrome currently does. Even though Google could argue "High Contrast White" is covered by their default visual style they must realise that this style is only one side of the coin and many others, like myself, rely on "High Contrast Black" just  to be able to function in any webpage in a short period of time.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome daygeee 4/26/10 2:33 PM
Thanks optical10, nice to know i was able to help a bit. I still have some problems with the extension too. For example, i can't use the up and down arrows in my hotmail account to navigate through mails, neither can i read books on google without disabling the extension for that page. I also look away from the computer and countdown from 3 to 0 during that short time lag before the extension kicks in, but my main aim was getting rid of that annoying white that gives me headache without having very sharp font colors (a potential source of eye ache), and without my webpages looking weird. CC extension gives me an excellent result as regards this.

I probably don't have your exact solution, but i think you should try the invert lightness thingy. It does come out with a dark background, and annoyingly bright fonts, but you might like it. However, they're way too bright for me, especially when i'm charging my laptop. Here's the link:

https://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/color.html.

You'll find several links on the page. You could use ctrl f to search for invert lightness if you don't find it on time, then drag it to that part of your chrome panel where you have free hotmail, suggested sites etc for easy access; as you might have to use it for every webpage (kind of frustrating right? lol). In terms of images and other graphics on the pages, I'm not sure of how well it works, as i did not use it for long but i could use my navigation arrows in google books. Anyway, try it and see if you like it, but i still prefer cc as invert lightness gives no user flexibility; you're stuck with one result.

Hi,
Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
I like the bookmarklet invert lightness, but not the black background :((

When I edit / simplify that bookmarklet down to just the background color, it does not do anything.
EDITED:
javascript:(function(){function changeBGC(color) {document.bgColor = gray;}})()

There are several extensions listed here:
https://chrome.google.com/extensions/featured/accessibility

I've used Change Colors and Plain Clothes but now prefer the custom.css route.

To use the custom.css run Chrome with the switch: -enable-user-stylesheet.

That will create a folder with a file "custom.css" here: \Data\profile\Default\User StyleSheets

Enter this exactly:
* { background-color: #808080 !important; }
Save and exit.

On running Chrome with the switch you'll get a grey background. You can replace #808080 with whatever you like.

You can also specify the colour of text by appending this line:
* { color: black !important; }

"To use the custom.css run Chrome with the switch: -enable-user-stylesheet."

yikes, For the life of me i can't find a google thread on " how to apply a switch to an windows executable", please tell me we have to use DOS com lone only?

cheerz
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome vasa1 8/18/10 8:58 PM
I didn't understand what you meant by "DOS com lone only".

If you mean DOS command line then please check out this post...
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=21218cb9950ed044&hl=en

You can alter the way Chrome runs in the properties as I described in the link. You don't have to go into DOS mode or use the RUN command.

Guess what - it's now almost 2011 - and the "Chromium Engineers" still cannot add tab color to the cheap browser that has so many compatibility issues - sheesh,   Can't wait for the OS...yeah that will be a hit.  Google is treading in areas where the ice is thin and people patience is not long.  Just like their Apps.  They are  just OK, not quite useful enough for smart users.  They have a ways to go to catch up with OO and MS Office.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome jer16 12/6/10 10:29 AM
There seems to be a way if you add an "Extension"...

From  Chrome's Windows menu, select Extensions.

If necessary, select  Get More Extensions

Search for whatever you want, eg Background Colors

Select and Install the extension you want -  I chose Change Colors by Strav.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome davidhzny 12/7/10 7:25 AM
I am a handicapped user with visual disabilities. I am appalled and dismayed by some of the posts in this thread. Here are the facts:
- Chrome does not honor the Windows Accessibility High Contrast Display option. This option reverses screen colors in Windows and generally all well-behaved Windows programs. This is crucial for me to fundamentally use my computer at all. Chrome stands out as a product that does not honor this setting. Most generally available products recognize this setting.
Here is my commentary on this fact and also some of the points made in this thread:
1. Chrome is no longer a new product. Some of the posts here say "give it time!" Much time has passed, still no High Contrast honoring.
2. This is a fundamental handicapped awareness issue. Uncompromised people may think us "whiners" or "complainers" and that may be strictly true. We may "unreasonably" "expect" companies to honor us. However, general social norms, including many laws from all governments, have measures in place for people with disabilities.
3. It is hard to interpret Google's lack of inclusion of this feature as anything but a *blatant disregard* for the disabled. This disregard is so blatant in this case that it is very disturbing to those of us affected.
4. I appreciate what one Googler said about "the engineers are" basically slaving away to fix bugs, etc. But boy, I wonder where there's a Product Manager out there who can recognize the grave nature of this blatant disregard for the disabled and push this feature through. And it's not all just about it being a fast browser - if it's not usable to a segment of the population, I don't care how fast it is.
5. The fact that it's free I don't find relevant to this discussion at all. At all. Period.
6. Large companies such as Google have a high degree of accountability to their users. Google is sorely negligent on this particular issue.
Thank you.

David, see if this helps:
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome vasa1 12/7/10 7:39 AM
Or, if you want, you can add this to your custom.css file:
(The custom.css file is a text file present in User Stylesheets which is present in the folder called Default). You may have to view hidden files and folders to find it.

* { background-color: #000000 !important; } /* black background */
* { background-image: none !important; } /* you can delete this line if background images are not a concern */
* html, body { background-color: #black !important; }
* { color: #ffffff !important; } /* white text */

Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome davidhzny 12/7/10 7:51 AM
Thanks Vasa. I do appreciate the first link to Chrome Accessibility Extensions. I may check out PlainClothes someday.
Not to sound lazy and/or that I want the world to revolve around me, but I still feel it's Google's responsibility to honor the Windows Accessibility High Contrast setting in Windows (and other OS's - Mac has a similiar feature). It is burdensome for me to add an extension and learn how to use it or add custom CSS - I just want Chrome to do what other programs already do and honor the built-in OS settings. It's very off-putting to a disabled user.
Again, I'm probably not helping my cause on an interpersonal level b/c a lot of people have prejudice about handicapped people wanting everything to be their way.
But sheesh, it's all built in to the OS, and the there are Disability Acts in place at governmental levels that require these things to be built-in to the program.
Anyway... I'll stop the political discussion here, and thank you for your thoughtful (and prompt) input.

vasa1: Thank you for the tip, it works (I now have inversed black background on white text)!!  Yes yes yes.

ps: On gnu/linux, seems like the command line switch is unneccesary; once I saved ~/.config/google-chrome/Default/User StyleSheets/Custom.css  chrome refreshed the screen with the new settings.

pps: Google, please add right click -> "Bookmark this url" if you have the spare time (why is this obvious feature missing?)  But I digress, this thread is about changing the colors and I can do it now, thanks again vasa1!

I agree the themes are horrible and not being able to change them is lazy. I was taught "if your going to do something do it right". With that said Google lets get a way to change the colors of the browser themes.

On following a load of links all over the place i eventually found the following here (http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=9149) which seems to do what most people have been asking for. Why someone couldn't have said it years before i don't know.

Comment 21 by pcxunlimited, Oct 5, 2010
You can now do this with user style sheets.

Create the file "<profile>/Default/User StyleSheets/Custom.css".

Anything within that file will be applied to all pages. Here's an example that makes the background light-grey:

body {
    background-color: ghostwhite !important;
}

The easiest way to find your Custom.css file is to do a search on your C: drive for files and folders called "User StyleSheets" then open this folder and copy the following text into it using notepad. I expect someone will improve on this eventually but at least for now it gets rid of the glaring whiteness.

body {
    background-color: ghostwhite !important;
}
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome AlBenjito 4/13/11 7:13 AM
As an addition to my previous post i have just found this http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-color/#svg-color

Which lists the names for colours (and shows you the colour), i'm assuming you can just replace the text "ghostwhite" with whatever you want from that list to get the desired colour.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome M Brian 4/13/11 10:56 AM
There is no use beating a dead horse (Chrome) over this matter. My experience with suggestions is that the company will do it when they are good and ready.
Regardless of this fact, has anyone noticed a faded text issue with other browsers? I use an Apple and have both Safari and Chrome on it. I have the same issue with the Safari browser but unfortunately Apple do not provide a Contact blog or Apple email to express a direct concern about issues as does Chrome. I would have thought that the OS would have dictated a minimum of system parameters to address text colors or as a minimum, informed all 3rd party software companies to conform to the basic operating parameters in their design. Color being certainly an important parameter to the users.
I appreciate the above people who remain frustrated with this issue and applaud the efforts of those people who have helped to solve this problem. Thank you

If you right click on your desktop, a list comes up. At the bottom of the list, choose 'Personalize'. On the bottom of the screen that comes up, there's an option that says 'Window color'. Click on that, and you can change the color of the top of every program on your computer.

Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome johnnyack 11/26/11 6:26 AM
There is another completely different problem with background colors on websites.  I'm trying to print out a lengthy tutorial that appears as white text on a black background.  When it prints the text contrast is so low that its unreadable.  In this case I need to change the website to black text on a white background, but Chrome does not have the ability as does IE does.  I can't believe that Google, the most profitable computer company in the world has not brought their browser up to the industry standard when users have been clamoring for it for some two years.  Why not use the programmers, that change the cutsie GOOGLE icon every other day, to fix this problem which, based on the many forum discussions, is a sore point with thousands of users.
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome mpilting 12/22/11 6:15 PM
I have tried many different methods of changing the background color, including the change colors extension. The problem with change colors is that it doesn't always work. The best solution I have found is the Pig Toolbox extension.

Install the Pig Toolbox extension, then click the pig toolbox icon and select "Pig Toolbox Options". This opens the pig toolbox options page. Scroll down to "Web page style(font,color,flash,image)" and click on "Font,color style and block flash,image detail option". This opens the "Font,color style and block flash,image detail option" page. Here, you can enter any background color you wish (in hex). Now, go back to the pig toolbox options page (click back) and set a keyboard shortcut for "Start set user style on pages, Shortcuts". I use "Alt 3". Then, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "Save". Now go to any website, like your homepage, and press the keyboard shortcut. This changes the background color of all web pages to your desired color.

I know it sounds complicated, but it's works like a charm!
Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome optical10 12/23/11 4:45 AM
thanks mpilting,

You are correct,  Pig Toolbox seems to maintain the benefits of a custom CSS stylesheet, PlainClothes Change Colour extensions which I have been using for many years to maintain the transparency on images, flash items and video etc whilst allowing me to have a totally black background and lighter fonts of my choosing. Hopefully with more expensive testing on various types of webpages this will be my default extension.

Regards

Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome Tomoya Kawasaki 2/23/12 1:41 PM
Hi ShigekiHizashi,

What stie are you referring to? Do you have a theme already?

Hi Chadwick286,

Do you also have a theme to Chrome?

I'd recommend reset your theme first and see if the problem persists.

1. Wrench icon.
2. Options (Mac: Preferences)
3. Personal stuff
4. Click "Reset to default theme" to restore to the original theme.

Re: How to change the background color of Google Chrome fyswan 4/4/12 12:02 AM
Regarding M Mnasours reply.  Your reply about it being a nice to have feature is shameful.  Google is supposed to be the leader yet cannot grasp the concept that background colour is not a nice to have but ESSENTIAL to many people.  Not having it must be a breech in the accessibility rules.  People with a learning diffiuclties like Dyslexia often need coloured backgrounds as it helps them understand and read the information better and decreases the stress.  Not only that they may need to have the text a different colour too.  I can read perfectly fine black and white, but would not do so given a choice as anything on my computer is coloured for this very reason.  We are not talking your stupid themes here but a true asset to using the net.

Shame on you Google for not addressing this very simple issue.

chrome extension: change colors

This is very nice, I would only suggest that it destroys some images (like equations on pages like wikipedia) when you change the background color from white.  See for example

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_law

When you change the color background the page equation images are destroyed.

Other than applying a theme, if you just want to permanently adjust the background color of a window, how do you do it?  The bright white background doesn't work for my eyes.  And BTW, the problem with themes is you can't see what they do without first applying them.  I can't go through scads of them just to adjust my background color.
