Where can I locate the bookmarks.bak file on my hard drive if I'm using Windows 7 Starter? nfusso 4/20/11 8:14 PM
My Gateway LT20 netbook was running Windows 7 Starter...until Saturday when one of the drivers corrupted. I've since loaded a Linux OS onto a flash drive to rescue vital files. The hard drive was not corrupted, and so I've recovered everything, except for my Chrome bookmarks.

On other forums, it was advised that the bookmark file and its backup were located in the "C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default" folder. However, my "Local" folder is empty, and there are no hidden files there. Because I'm running Windows 7 Starter, does Chrome store its bookmark back up file in a different location on my hard drive? Does anyone know where I can find it?

Like said in [1], you're looking at the right place.

You are looking with you're Linux I'm guessing, so check if there is an bookmarks ipv bookmarks.bak

Note: Have you used any synchService?

Thanks for the help JVApen. To clarify, I am currently viewing my hard drive with Linux. All my bookmarks were created while using Windows 7 Starter.

When I navigate to "...\AppData\Local" the folder is entirely empty. No "Google" folder is present. I'm out of ideas!!

re: synch service...I haven't in the past, but I will be as soon as I recover these bookmarks!

Have you checked all the other users (Default,...) ?

I have, without luck. Other users include "All Users", "Public", "Default", and maybe one or two more. Some of these don't have an "AppData" folder. The one's that do might have folders within "Local"; but none actually have a "Google" folder present.

Could I perhaps access my bookmarks online somehow, and retrieve them off a Google server? Perhaps there's a Linux search function someone could recommend so I could scan for the 'bookmark.bak' folder on the mounted partition? Like I said, I'm totally stuck and will try anything!

If you're looking for the search, I think you've probably could use "sudo gnome-search-tool" in the terminal (Ctrl+Shift+T) (at least on Ubuntu its that way)

do a scan for bookmark and boomark.bak

I you've synched you could retrieve them, but you didn't so, I am afraid it won't be able to get it from the server.

Note: you have a lot easier whay to acces a mounted device, if you just install a Linux on you're PC
