Through the router! :)

You might be better off looking at another solution.

Through the router is one (though, these sites pop up soooo often, on different IPs and hostnames...)

Why not try opendns?  I use them (though dont use their porn filter) and many users have great responses from that filtering.

Here's another local option:

There are lots of solutions, many will charge money though....bite the bullet and do it yourself :)

Optionally, you could run your own dns server, so you can see every site that is requested through your network, and block only the sites that are visited :)

Or just watch your kids when they're on the internet.

--This isn't meant to make me sound rude, but honestly, that's the best way to do it.

This isn't blocking per se, but depending upon how tech savvy those being blocked are, you can either just check the history for those sites and then punish accordingly, or if these people know to clear histories, install a keylogger on your computer, which will record what was entered (therefore, URLs).

OpenDns will accomplish what you want.

There ought to be a extension or even knew application designed by google which will enable the blocking of porn sites, or content marked questionable. With the amazing things google has created so far, I don't see why a user updated content filter wouldn't be a priority. There are plenty of people out there who would use it.

No, site blocking, content filtering, and generally playing God with what is perceived to be bad and good is not a wonderful idea. It's definitely not a Google idea.

I know Google do indulge in a little content blocking in the form of safe search, but full-blown web content filtering is a different matter. It's also a dubious matter when it comes to the technical side of things; Safe Search itself is not technically a security feature, it's just a way of preventing search results from being overwhelmed with porn.

It's an interesting topic, although I don't think this is Google's thing. It's far more likely they will provide a platform for open standards that allows someone else to do such a thing.

To answer the original question; if you are concerned about child safety online, there is one way, and one way only to tackle this. And it's not by blocking websites, it's by keeping a physical eye on things, and discussing things openly.

Perhaps using some kind of purpose-built child internet safety software might work in some cases, but this won't happen on the browser level.

after ages of trying I came up with a reasonable solution.

1 install "tinyfilter" (ver 0.2) then go to tools>extensions and tick "allow in incognito"
2 install latest "chrome lock" (ver 2.4) set a password in the options and make sure you also tick "also locks extensions with password"
3 go to tools>extensions (you now need a password!) and tick allow in incognito

now content is filtered and kids can use incognito to buy parents presents :)
but as you can not access extensions you can not switch off the tinyfilter and it remains active in incognito too! I am a happy bunny now I can use jolicloud with its great chromium browser.
Enjoy!

Go here. It is the same procedure in Chrome as on regular Google.
It is Lock SafeSearch.

Disable or remove any extensions with the name "Super Mario".  Click on Wrench > Settings > Extensions or Wrench > Tools > Extensions
