I saw today that you have added the feature to make phone calls straight from gmail, however, everytime i try to call, the voice says "We could not complete your call. Please try again." I even tried reinstalling the Voice & Video Chat plug-in, but that still didnt work. What do I need to do to fix it?

Same here, Firefox 3.6.8 and IE 8, tried restarting computer after plugin install, but didn't help. Running Windows XP Pro SP3.

I resolved it on my end.  Hopefully this will work on yours!

I went to www.google.com/voice and set up my Google Voice settings, then returned to my Gmail and attempted to place a call...worked like a charm.  Hope this helps!!

I just tried this, too.  I don't have an upgraded account, I don't have a Google phone number or anything.  But it doesn't say anywhere that you need one for this to work.

Hi all,

We're looking into this issue at the moment. You shouldn't need an upgraded Google Voice account to place outbound calls, but there looks like there may be an issue affecting this. I'll update this thread as soon as I know more. Thanks for bearing with us in the meantime!

I didn't have to "upgrade" my account.  I just had to set up my Voicemail settings.  I finally upgraded my account anyway because I wanted a phone number, but it worked for me after setting up VM settings.

I followed jarheadglidden's advice and resolved the issue posted here. You need to get a google voice number to be able to call phones.

Ah currently that service is not available in canada ( the voice number) so I guess I'm out of luck unless I spoof my locale. ( not that I condone such actions ^_^ )

It seems to be an Google account related issue.  I tried on my computer, and I get the call cannot be completed message.

A person in my office, who shares the same internet hub with me, can use it on their computer no problem with their g-mail account, but when I sign in with my account on their computer.and dial the same number they just dialed, I get the call cannot be completed message.

Since it works under their account but not with mine, it is clearly not a hardware or software issue, but something to do with the Google account itself.

I thought you don't need a dedicated Google Voice number to use this feature? That's what I read over at PCWorld. If I needed a Google Voice number, shouldn't my Call icon be red instead of the color green to let me know something's missing? I'm also getting the "Call cannot be completed" error message every time I try an outbound call.

I think they just haven't made the instructions as thorough as possible. Google Voice is not the same as the voice/video chat feature in Gmail. If you go into Upgrade Your Account, you'll get a Google number (it's free) and it'll work from there. Worked for me anyway. :)

Here are some details that might help them debug.  Everything seems to be configured correctly AND sometimes I can hear the phone ring at the other end before it gets cut off.  However the connect is not actually being made because I can dial my own home phone, hear the phone ring over the Internet...and then the cutoff.  However, the real phone that called does NOT ring at all.  This problem happens with ALL calls regardless of phone number, and the voice that responses is ALWAYS the same recorded voice with the same performance characteristics, indicating a single problem point.

Oh yes...I have not updated my account.

Hey Guys,

An update: we've identified the issue affecting some accounts. The main symptom is receiving the "We could not complete your call" message when making an outbound call. While PCWorld is correct that we do not require a full Google Voice account to make outbound phone calls in Gmail, a temporary workaround is to upgrade to a full Google Voice account. Instructions are attached on this post.

We're working on a fix, but if you'd like to get started immediately upgrading is a quick (and free) way to get going. Otherwise, please bear with us while we get it resolved.

I have a full account with a google number and I recently started receiving the "Cannot complete your call error".  I was working fine for more than a month but now any outbound calls I try to make are getting that message.  inbound calls work fine.

I just transfered my Google Apps account to the new system and had my google voice account transfered as well..  I can receive calls just fine but i am having the same problem when trying to dial out.  Thanks.

I have two accounts and one works fine and the other I keep getting this same message every time I try to dial out with my computer.
Google, please fix it.  I was using it just fine on this account and then it just stopped working.  Works ok on the other account, but I need it to work on this account as well.

I have a hosted domain google account.  I have installed the plugin, upgrade account, setup voicemail but still getting the "we could not complete your call.  please try again".  I was able to use the gmail "call phone" to setup voicemail.  I can receive calls with it setup to forward to my google talk.  Also, I can only get it working with Firefox 3.6.10.  I have 64-bit windows 7 running 64-bit IE 8.0.7600 and I can not even get the "call phone" to recognize the plugin install.  It keeps asking me to install the plugin even though I have done it many times with no errors or warnings.
 
I would be happy to get it working with anything right now.  Any ideas?

My Google Apps account was also converted a couple of months back. GV within Gmail worked for a while, now I just get the "call cannot be completed" error every time. This is extremely frustrating!

It was working for me when I first got notice through GMail of this new feature.

However, now when I try to use it, it doesn't work and I get this same error message.

I have tried with two different set ups, both yielding same error -

(1) Mozilla Firefox 3.6.11 on Windows XP Pro SP3, and

(2) Mozilla Firefox 3.6.11 on EEEBuntu

I noticed that in the instructions linked above for upgrading to Google Voice, the "Upgrade Your Account" button seems to actually say "Get a Google Number".

Once you upgrade, you have to go to Google Voice for it to work; the call phone within the default GMail screen still errors out.

To upgrade:    (1)  In Gmail, click the Call phone link in the Chat list.  (2)  From the Call window, click your current account balance and select History or Add credit. (3)    Once in Google Voice, click the Upgrade your account button.  (4)    Complete the upgrade steps including picking your new Google number.                      

When I click on History or Add Credit, it brings me to my Google Voice account. 
However, there is no button to Upgrade your account.  Am I missing something?  Cody, is there another solution?

Google Voice Phone number account
Windows 7 64-bit
Firefox 3.6.12

Any local number in same area code gives "We could not complete your call, please try again."

I have a second Gmail account (Not a Google Hosted Account).
I logout of 1st Gmail (Google Hosted), then login to 2nd Gmail (standard Gmail).
Dial out works like a charm.

Both accounts worked last week, but now only Gmail works.  What gives?

I am having the same issue with a fully upgraded google account. I am using google apps for domains with my google voice account linked to that same domain. I am able to receive calls into gmail however unable to make outgoing calls.

I am having the same problem...cannot call from my gmail that is a google apps domain email. I upgraded the domain to transition to the new infrastructure. And yes, I have a google voice # attached to my google apps email/account. like poster above, I can call using the web interface of google voice, just not in my gmail.

also cannot receive incoming calls in my google apps email from another google voice account, but I can receive calls from a cell phone/landline. Is this still being worked on?

Just a GMAIL account. Not Apps. I have a @gmail.com email address, I signed up for email very long time ago, back in 2004, but added google voice just Saturday. Everything was good Saturday till Today in the afternoon. When I started getting the message. My wifes account is working, I asked other friends and they are good. Not sure exactly whats wrong, but this is very frustrating. Another point to notice is that If I can another google voice number it goes thru...

Something else very intresting that I found. If I make a call to Gvoice number, the hangup and dial another outside number it goes thru but next one doesnt....

I was a regular user of the Gmail chat Google Phone feature when at some point in the first week of November 2010 it started to play the "We could not complete your call" recording for all my call attempts.  I had at first though it was a temporary outage, was not till today that positive testing with a friends account determined that my issue was account related and here I am.

I understand that the only solution is to upgrade my Google Voice account.  However, being a Canadian, I do not have the ability to upgrade the Google Voice account.  I do not blame Google as I recognize that my Governments communications regluation boards have been the primary roadblock.

However, has another solution been identifed for people in my situation?

I doubt this is related (solely) to your being in Canada or not having an upgraded GV account. I am in the US, have a fully upgraded GV account with a GV phone # and I too get the same message constantly....here's hoping its fixed...soon!

This is happening for me as well.

I am on a Mac running Snow Leopard and Firefox 3.6.12.  I also have the exact same problem when using the latest 64 bit nightly build of Firefox 4 (4.0pre8).  I also have the exact same problem when using Firefox 3.6.12 on my friend's Windows 7 laptop.

I have two accounts -- one account attached to a Google Voice number that I've been using for over a year now (since Google Voice first started public testing) and one account that does not have a Google Voice number attached.  When I dial any number from the account that DOES have the Google Voice number attached, it rings once then I hear a female voice say "We could not complete your call.  Please try again."  When I go into my OTHER account (the one that does not have a Google Voice number attached) using ANY of the same above computer/browser combinations, I can dial out just fine...  But of course the caller ID shows up as a random number in the 760 area code, whereas I'd like it to show my Google Voice number.

Both of these accounts are plan Gmail accounts (@gmail.com accounts).  I also have a Google Apps account but I've just started the "infrastructure upgrade" process 5 minutes before writing this post, so I can't tell if I can use that one or not yet.

FYI... I don't make GV calls from gmail but I do mail all calls through the GV app on my android device and I get the same problem there.  I also already have a full GV account (the work-around you suggested above).  Are you aware that this problem is also affecting mobile users of the GV app?
