|iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||Thorendor||1/9/09 12:01 AM|
My iCal feed has not updated in my Google Calendar for at least 7 days now. It was working earlier this year. Per the help (http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/static.py?page=troubleshooter.cs&problem=techissue&selected=techissue_update_feed&sl=imp03&ctx=techissue_techissue_update_feed_38847), I should report the issue to Google, but there doesn't seem to be any contact address, and I don't want to post details about my calendar in a public forum. Please advise what I should do?
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||DanGuest||1/9/09 2:06 AM|
I have exactly the same problem. My iCal feed hasn't updated since I added it 5 days ago. I also would like to know what I should do to resolve this problem?
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||Thorendor||1/9/09 11:17 AM|
Whoa! Miracles! My calendar got updated sometime between the time I posted this question and now. To whomever made this happen: thanks!
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||DanGuest||1/11/09 9:21 AM|
Mine still hasn't been updated. It would be good to have some guidance from google regarding what the expected frequency fo updates should be? Alternatively, some info on whether this is an area that they're working on making improvements?
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||DanGuest||1/13/09 4:47 AM|
Still not updated!
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||ddulek||1/14/09 2:26 PM|

|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||Thorendor||1/14/09 2:46 PM|
*sigh* The iCal feed is not updating again; it's been at least 3 days now. I just checked on MobileMe, and the iCal feed is up to date there, so it appears to be a Google issue.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||DanGuest||1/21/09 2:13 AM|
Mine still hasn't been updated!
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||msgabbani||1/22/09 7:48 AM|
I just installed Sync with iCal and found all my Google Calendar in iCal and no iCal in the Google Calendar. I've been doing a manual synchronisation of events and notes for ages so many of the calendars have the same names...so I have duplicates. It's a bloody great mess....but it looks like at least I have company.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||msgabbani||1/22/09 8:09 AM|
From another discussion:
Note though, you can only sync calendars back to Google that you downloaded originally from Google (obviously you can add new events to those calendars, but you won't be able to sync other calendars back to Google).
I'm going to try this out.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||DanGuest||1/22/09 10:25 AM|
I've just discovered that the behaviour that I've reported isn't correct. Google Calendar does pick up some types of changes within 24hrs. Other types of changes appear to be ignored as follows:
a) New VEVENT entries appear to be picked up with 24hrs.
b) Changed VEVENT entries are ignored.
It took me a while to notice this as I was predominantly changing existing entries so it looked like none of my changes were being picked up. So it looks like Google is effectively reading existing entries from some kine of cache and only fetching new entries from the feed. Very stange!!!
It would be good to get some input from a Googler as to whether this is a known bug?
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||Barkin||1/23/09 10:09 AM|
I'm having the same problem. When I add new events in iCal, the changes show up in Google Calendar. It usually happens pretty quick, especially if I select "refresh calendars."
But if I make a change to an existing calendar item (like if the time of a meeting switches fromm 11 to 10:30, or I rename a meeting, or something like that), the changes don't get synced.
This is a pretty fatal flaw, if you ask me.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||gildav||2/2/09 6:46 AM|
It seems to be working again?
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||Thorendor||2/2/09 9:19 PM|
As some other users have noticed, new iCal events appear in my Google Calendar after a period of a few hours to a few days. Changes to existing events in iCal never seem to propagate to Google Calendar. All iCal changes -- new and existing events -- appear in MobileMe, so the issue doesn't appear to be on the iCal side.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||DanGuest||2/3/09 1:17 AM|
It's still not working for my calendar either. As Thorendor points out; new events are picked up whereas changes to existing events are completely missed/ignored by google.
It's a real shame that Google Calendar is flawed in such a basic way and they don't apprear to be doing anything to acknowledge or address the probem in any way... :(
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||beles||2/22/09 2:53 AM|
No answer on my side just the same behaviour. As I was developing a new icalendar feed generated with php out of a mysql db this behaviour is terrible. As all updates to the script where not reflected even I update the last modified date, increase the serial of the event etc... As well the "Aktualisieren" = update now button doesn't help. Non either log off and log in again as it does when updating contacts.
Only things that help is to store the feed under another name and to add it as new calendar (even deleting and readding the calendar under the same name didn't reflected any updates). So looks like a bug to me when I read your comments (before I was thinking maybe there is something wrong with my feed).
I would be thankfull for an explanation by Google how often the feeds are read and based on which tags the records are updated. Then at least I would have a hint if somethings wrong in my script or if it is a general problem.

I think main problem is the encoding of the ics file?
I have same thing here.
I've birthday calendar, and want to publish to gCal through iCalx
However, I found the calendar refresh, and all event has "" instead of 'People from other thread is saying modify the ics to be not "UTF-8" can solve....
But, it'll be very troublesome for cases, like my birthday calendar....
very inconvinence to modify everytime the ics file everytime I publish?
Google, please help here?
Thanks in advance.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||EricSt||3/6/09 7:18 AM|
Even though I see googlebot requesting the feed in the apache logs, every 3 ou 4 hours, the calendar itself is not updated.
All new "VEVENTS" dont get displayed.
The feed is generated from php, the ics file is valid.
This same feed works perfectly in Thunderbird lightning.
Any idea ?
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||nonamehereatall||3/6/09 9:17 PM|
If it is true that you can only sync from Google to iCal and not back, then that is stupid. If that is true, then you are syncing yur Google cal to iCal, not your iCal to Google. If that is true, then this is ridculous, and another G1 goes back for refurbish.

Same problem. where is fix?
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||jvanderh||4/23/09 8:54 AM|
The only thing that worked for me was signing into iCalexchange and deleting all my calendars, then hitting refresh in iCal, then hitting refresh in google calendar. (Didn't have to re-publish, they re-created themselves in iCalexchange when I refreshed in iCal)
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||wfzimmerman||4/23/09 11:29 AM|
I had to export my broken calendar to an ical file on my desktop; delete the calendar from my Google Cal account; *edit the ical ffile to remove the duplicate item*; create a new calendar; and import the edited ical file into the new calendar.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||sergegoldstein||4/28/09 1:22 PM|
I also am having problems getting Google calendar to update a calendar from an iCal feed. One thing I have been careful to do is to follow the rules regarding the use of the iCal "SEQUENCE" property. As I understand it, if you are updating an existing event (e.g., changing the start or end time), then you have to send a VEVENT item that includes the same UID as the original event, but has a higher SEQUENCE number. In general, to update or add an event, you havew to include the following iCal properties: ORGANIZER, DTSTART, DTSTAMP (DTEND unless an all-day event), UID and SEQUENCE (if updating an event). I am doing all of that, and it doesn't work (Google seems to download the calendar once and then never goes back out to the URL). It sounds like some people are at least getting Google to add new events. What are you including in your iCal streams?
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||DanGuest||4/28/09 1:59 PM|
Here's what I'm using:
More potentially useful info is posted on this thread:
In summary, my new events get added ok using this format. However, event changes aren't picked up so I've given up on using GoogleCal. An ical app that doesn't have this basic functionality working is useless. Shame on Google for having such poor quality control on this programme...
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||bib||5/7/09 8:21 AM|
I looked at server logs over the course of a couple of days. The googlebot does check the .ics (roughly) every 6 hours.
Yeah, there really should be a way to at a least do a manual refresh. I hope this issue is being adressed.

Same problem as originally described with a Toodledo feed. Will go check their support forums to see if there is actually any support happening over there.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||kedmond||8/4/09 7:45 AM|
Yeah, I'm having the same problem. There are a couple of meetings that my group has periodically, so I set the event to repeat forever. When details of the meeting are announced, I update the events individually, which breaks that individual event out of the series. That's fine by me, but not by the .ics version. I have duplicate events all over the place. It's very annoying. I don't know how to issue a new and correct .ics file.
Despite this, Google's Calendar is no longer in beta... :-(

same issue here
google calendar will read the calendar fine initially
there is no way to manually refresh the calendar
(it's been about an hour since I added it, and no new events have registered in google calendar. perhaps it needs more time)
this all works fine in Mozilla sunbird

|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||jbalcorn||8/31/09 12:49 PM|
I see that every time I make a chance to my .ics file, the googlebot HTTP request gets a 200 and it downloads the actual file. All other googlebot requests correctly get a 304. Changed events do not update, however. Has anyone gotten ANY response from Google about this? It's a quite fatal flaw.

|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||HobbesVII||10/8/09 12:04 AM|
I'm using Google Cal to centralize all my various calendar feeds, and it *should* work great except that it is never up-to-date. New events are not added for a long time, sometimes after the event has passed. I also have trouble with changed events. Is there any way I can do a force refresh on the iCal feeds?
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||shawncrisp3||10/8/09 12:51 PM|
I use Outlook 2007 at work, a blackberry for the mobile and Ical for home on my Mac. Everything seemed ok till about a week ago when I started to get double entries in my calendars. Now the sync appears to be missing entries. For example, I had an office meeting that I entered on my Outlook 2007 and it posted fine onto my blackberry using exchange. My google calendar however didn't update, although it did update an appointment i made for the next day.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||cheaka||10/12/09 4:28 PM|
In February 2009, a Google employee (Trevor Johns) noted that he had opened a feature request for manual updating of ical calendars that were added by URL.: http://groups.google.com/group/google-calendar-help-dataapi/browse_thread/thread/d223e9878465c45f
No public progress seems to have been made since then. This is a long, longstanding problem. Here is a thread from 2 years ago with the same complaint, that mentions that even then this was a recurring issue: http://groups.google.com/group/google-calendar-help-publishers/browse_thread/thread/590339016847b9bf

As usual Google is apparently showing its arrogance. I am active with Android issues and it is the same problem there as well. Serious issues dating back more than a year are seemingly ignored.
The first post in this thread is from August 2009... yet more than five months later, there is no response and no fix from Google.
It would seem that these support forums were built solely for venting. Unlike some, my company is actually paying for these Google email and calendar services!
Trust me, if your company is considering a switch from Exchange Server to Google services... DON'T!!
It has been a very painful experience AND this iCal sync issue is JUST another headache!
Google support is a oxymoron!

I would love to use Google apps but they just don't want to work with Mac.
I have too much invested in Mac machinery to consider moving away.
If this isn't resolved soon my only option would seem to be to drop TB, a shame.
I was looking at buying an Android phone , but the likely hood of it working seamlessly with my other hardware makes it seem a bad choice.

I would like to setup the refresh interval for external ical calendars, and to trigger a manual refresh when needed.
This is a basic feature for a calendar application and I would really appreciate if this feature would be included in google calendar.
I am still using other calendar clients, like evolution, etc.. because this option is still missing in google calendar
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||ikogan||3/10/10 6:10 AM|
I'm exporting my ics file from Outlook to a web server and Google Calendar will only sometimes pick up changes. Eventually, it is completely unable to sync anything, new or updated events. It can't be a parse issue because if I download the file and import it manually, it all works fine. Apparently webdav wasn't properly updating the last timestamp on the file, but even after updating the timestamp and confirming that the HTTP headers have the correct timestamp, it will still not update. So far, short of manually importing the events into a *new* Calendar several times a week, I haven't found a good way to reliably sync Oracle to Google. I've been trying to sync Oracle to Outlook and Outlook to Google but that's having the problems above.

|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||CptSternn||4/6/10 1:41 AM|
I found this thread and at least I'm not alone! I have a website with an events list that is exported to a live iCal feed. I can import and sync this feed into Outlook, Sunbird, and now even Facebook, but for some reason it only shows up on occasion when imported into Google Calendar. I thought it was something I was doing, but reading this thread I'm not alone. I guess I'll just bookmark this page and keep checking back every few months.
The one who is going to lose out here is Google. I mean, if every other company out there offers Calendaring systems which work with iCal and Google Calendars does not, it is only a matter of time before people move away to competitors and use their services.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||emearg1||4/12/10 10:25 AM|
I've just signed up for google apps with a CRM system and the calendar has only updated once in two days.
One of the big selling points of the crm system is the calendar app intergration with ical feeds.
I feel a bit cheated.
Looking at how long this has been an issue maybe they should change the phrase "don't be evil" to "don't bother"
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||patarroyo||4/12/10 2:24 PM|
Every time I have changed my google password, iCal stops working, even after entering the new password. In the past, I have had to delete my entire iCal google setup locally in order to get a working copy of the calendar. Since my last password change, I have been unable to even do that. I am simply not allowed to login. This is pretty much ridiculous: if we for whatever reason don't have access to the internet, we have no local copy of our calendar. Obviously this problem is long-standing and widespread, yet there is no comment by google, no indication that they are addressing this problem. To me, the only worthwhile solution is to use another calendar, even if it means paying. We cannot rely on google for timely fixes, or really ANY fixes whatsoever. These issues have been occurring according to thread dates since early 2009. That's almost a year and a half, and there has been zero acknowledgment by google. How disappointing. The recommendation to all users should be to NOT use google as their support for their calendar feature is virtually nil.

Forget Google Calendar. I just signed up to 30 Boxes and anything I add syncs immediately. I haven't been able to track my Facebook events on Google Calendar for months, but the synchronization is built right into 30 Boxes!

|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||sergegoldstein||4/15/10 7:03 AM|
I wonder if Google explicitly wants to NOT fix this problem, the idea being that if you want synchronization, stop using other calendaring systems and move all of your calendars to Google. That assumes that synchronization works within the Google space, which I have not tested.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||ashrock||4/21/10 1:54 PM|
SOLUTION (worked for me at least):
Change the "http" in the ics file address to "webcal." Problem solved. After seeing this, I cannot fathom why Google doesn't just change the URL for the private iCal address.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||bib||4/21/10 8:53 PM|
Can anyone confirm this?
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||CptSternn||4/22/10 12:14 AM|
You can't change the HTTP to WEBCAL - when you add in a URL to the calendar. Even if you put in WEBCAL it automatically switches it to HTTP.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||Flo Ledermann||5/27/10 11:21 PM|
If you are a developer, I can confirm that setting the HTTP caching headers of your iCalendar feed to:
Cache-Control: max-age=7200, private, must-revalidate
helps in getting the calendar feed updated (even changed events) at least once a day - at least it works in my app http://strawberrypal.com/ - I have set up a public test feed that you can analyze at http://strawberrypal.com/test/aaaaaaaa/test.ics
If you are not a developer but a user of an external service, you can point your service provider to this information to allow them to improve their service.
Hope it helps!

|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||sergegoldstein||10/6/10 12:10 PM|
Olabri: Could you say a little more about what you mean by "this can be reproduced"? Have you found a way to get Goole calendar to actually update calendars on a regular basis?
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||olabri||10/7/10 12:23 AM|
Sorry for being so unclear. By "reproduced" I meant that it can be verified as to no being updated as the two urls are the same giving a different result, meaning google caches the calendars by url (or as hashes of such).
Google is *NOT* updating the calendars even if the log shows that Google is visiting them every 6. hour.
Further: in the help files for calendar feeds, it states that we should contact Google with url if it fails. Anyone knows HOW to contact Google on this matter, as it seems they aren't reading these forums.

I have a mysql db and a php file generating a iCal ics file that works perfectly in everything except google calendar. I am going to have to advise my client not to use gCal for their up coming tour as they wont be able to collaboratively manage their gigs through my event management system... shame really, i love Google, and to tell people bad things about them just seems wrong...
GOOGLE...... SORT OUT REFRESHING ICAL FEEDS PLEASE, ASAP !!!
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||warul||5/13/11 12:17 AM|
Didn't help me.
This problem has been going on for years while google labs makes up options to move items to the right side on your gmail page.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||mrandt||6/19/11 8:52 PM|
Apparently Google has still not fixed this. My feed works fine with most applications (MS Outlook, Lotus Notes, Thunderbird Lightning, iCal on Mac, iPhone, iPad) EXCEPT Google Calendar. Changes are often not picked up and if they are, it takes forever. I cannot find any deterministic pattern in Google's uptaing logic for iCal feeds. Sending Cache Control headers did not improve anything. I increment SEQUENCE for each changed entry. I also tried changing the UUID of VEVENT and even VCALENDAR with each change, but had no luck. I believe this is a defect in gCal. Ennoying: Since Android doea not support iCal feeds / webcal, Droids need to go through gCal... Could someone at Google please do something about this?

I have the same issue. The first post in this thread is from 1/9/09 so I'm asking myself if google is not solving this on purpose? Do they want to force people to use google calendar and the corresponding api? I'm very disappointed...

Same here. Lion ical is not updating my google calendar. Please fix this google.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||judsonmitchell||8/26/11 5:13 AM|
I had some success getting the calendar to at least display by changing the name of the ical file and adding a new calendar which points to the new file name.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||lellefot||11/11/11 3:42 AM|
Still does not work. I can get it to display the initial import just fine, but any changes and for that matter new events are not updated.

Please, please, please can you guys fix this. You're killing us with this feed not working in real time. Just tell us you're not going to fix this, so I can make other plans.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||JumpinJahosavich||11/16/11 10:38 AM|
please let me know when this is fixed... it would be greatly convenient for ical and google calender to reliably sync...
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||bweber1||12/5/11 1:36 AM|
I have found 2 issues that I can adjust with drupal that affect regular updates to Google calendar.
1. If the description field in the ICAL file has return characters, Google will not pull anything from that ICAL file
2. if the sequence number is not updated for changes to a previous event, Google will not find the change.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||bweber1||12/5/11 1:49 AM|
I am testing to see if the header makes Google reprocess all events each time thereby putting a large bandaid on the lack of sequence numbers.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||nujec||12/10/11 5:06 AM|
Please fix this or give us a manual refresh feature like that available in gmail for external mail accounts.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||jrnevers||12/14/11 1:49 PM|
Sorry for you guys... but you really don't seem to understand what you are dealing with... obviously it is not at all the kind of "nice good old big brother but too busy to take care of you" ! So many people seems to have been discussing this problem for more than 2 years now... seeing the enormous technical power and achievements of Google in various other areas, obviously this is NOT AT ALL a technical problem for Google, but just a voluntary obstacle for users in the old and growing Apple-Google WAR. Yes, its a WAR and we users are caught as stupid hostages in the middle of the battlefield (years ago, it was Microsoft preventing browsers to install properly in Windows -it ended up in courts-; now the battlefield has moved; there are other similar and well documented recent examples; for ex. the very weird great inability of Apple computers to use Android phones as GPRS modems through bluetooth -very curiously it worked instantly like a charm with older generations of smaller non-android non-iOS smartphones; another was the designed inabiltity of iPhones to use Google phone, etc. etc.-)

Just ran into this issue trying to sync RTM with Google Calendar. I make changes in RTM and any other client updates instantly, except of course GCal. We need manual refresh, or better sync!
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||Dave80119||2/21/12 10:25 AM|
I just tried out syncing RTM with Google Calendar, and it just doesn't work. It synced the items that were on my RTM at the moment when I first added the RTM feed to my google calendar...but never changed to reflect new edits/additions to my RTM.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||sem234||5/14/12 12:36 PM|
I have the same problem and wonder why this old issue has not been fixed yet.
I also want to combine google calendar features with RTM task features and have a combined view in a calendar in the web as well as on my mobile (android) - but even though we have been to the moon, this dashbord feature is still future... :-)
I would appreciate an automatic sync in a frequency of about 1 hour.
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||michelf||7/16/12 4:22 AM|
It seems that Google more or less fixed this problem (see known issues) although they state that there are still some problems concerning duplicate events. I would like to know if the problems with the Ical-feed are still appearing with other users. We use the feed at an university in the Netherlands, and prior to emailing all users that the problem is solved, I would like some affirmation from other users. Testing it myself is difficult because the problems occurred randomly. So my question: are there still users who have problems with syncing Ical-feeds with Google calendar?
|Re: iCal feed not updating in Google Calendar||Dinand Mentink||9/21/12 6:01 AM|
I am still having this problem. Hasn't updated for around a week.
This issue is now 2 years old, i'm guessing google is actively avoiding fixing it.
