|Is there a way to make recurring tasks in Google calendar, so that I can set up a "task" reminder for every month?||dvturner||2/21/10 8:29 AM|
Please always include:
Operating system (e.g. WinXP): Mac OS 10.5
Program and version you use to access Google Calendar (e.g. Internet Explorer 7 or Outlook 2003): Firefox
Any Sync software you're using or have used (e.g. Google Calendar Sync): iCal (Mac and iPhone)
If you're using the non-Apps version of Google Calendar (accessing from google.com/calendar/render) or you're on Google Apps: Yes
If you have any Labs (and which ones) or Offline enabled: No
Am using the task bar and would prefer to keep my to-do items separate from my meetings and events. However, I'd like to setup Monthly (or weekly) recurring tasks reminders - like paying bills, watering plants, calling my mom, etc. Any ideas?

One method, or work around, I thought of would if you use gmail in addition to gcal. In gcal, create a calendar called "Work Tasks". Set the default remainder for that calendar to send you an email. Create all you reoccuring tasks in that calendar. When gcal sends you the reminder email simply click on the "More Actions" tab at the top of gmail and add that email to your tasks list.

Hi there. Somewhat like cnobis2722 suggested ... instead of using the Google Tasks feature, I set up a separate calendar for my tasks, which I can hide or view whenever I want to, and view in Week or Day format, if I have a lot of tasks to accomplish. I schedule each task for "All Day". Since All-Day calendar items appear alphabetically, I simply put an x in front of the task when it's completed, so it falls to the bottom of the list. The advantage of puttings tasks on a calendar is VOILA! you can set up a reminder; this includes reminders for tasks that are recurring.

I don't like these suggestions (of course they are better than nothing, so really thanks, but..) these are only half-way solutions. Tasks should have reminder function beside primary calendar.

I agree with Tocsa - and tasks need snooze/postpone and repeating invertal settings / option to reoccur monthly.

I can offer a pretty good work-around to get recurring tasks. It is not quite as easy as it should be, but it works for me.
1. Set your task, say "Water flowers" up as a recurring event in Calendar. I water the flowers every other day, so I have it set for every two days.
2. Set a reminder to email you a timely reminder, say eight hours in advance.
3. When the reminder arrives in your Gmail Inbox, open it and click on the "Other Actions..." drop down box.
4. Choose "Add to Tasks".
5. Archive or delete the gmail message.
Using this, I always have my recurring task "Water flowers" on my Task List for the day when I need it.
Hope this helps,

Thanks for your comments! We recently ran a poll for Tasks feature requests and this was at the top of the list - we just published a blog post with some of the results so check it out if you have a few minutes: http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2011/01/top-tasks-for-google-tasks.html

I am using Astro for Android to create repeating tasks with remainder and sync with Google. However it only syncs task name, task notes and due date, because Google doesn't support anything else. Nevertheless, I hope you will find the app useful if you own an Android device. Possibly an analog of this app also exists for iPhone and Windows Mobile devices.

create an event, edit the event, find REPEAT option, its just below Date option, just check the box you will see a popup. enter daily, weekly etc to get reminder.

Any idea when reoccuring task functionality will be available? Thanks.

Recurring task option would be great

still waiting for recurring tasks..instead of the work around. Thanks Google for being a great tool box

Would be great to see some of these functions come to google tasks soon. . . .

Adrienne: any word on what's been happening with recurring task development since February?
|SajalB||11/23/11 5:10 AM|
I have set a yearly recurring reminder on my Rememberthemilk tasks list, to see if Google tasks got recurring tasks yet?
2010: No not yet
2011: No not yet
Will come back next year.
Thanks google for your yet another unfinished product.

I fear that the next project to be retired will be Tasks, "because not enough people use it." But as the poll in 2010 showed, there is a lot of interest, but frustration that key features are missing. My wife has used Microsoft Works Calendar for years and loved it (past tense because that computer just died and the new one doesn't have Works). What she really loved was that reminders were displayed in a separate window and stayed there until dismissed. It was also easy to reschedule the due date. It is actually just calendar appointments, not tasks, but she used it quite effectively for tasks.
The key reason *I* don't use Google Calendar's Tasks is because I cannot see them on my Android phones. Come on, Google! We're begging you to make your product compelling and telling you exactly how to do it. If Microsoft Works could do this *YEARS* ago (and Outlook does something very similar), why can't Google Calendar?
|WilliamReeder||11/24/11 6:48 PM|
Another feature request: allow the tasks to be popped out to their own window. It should show all overdue tasks and all tasks with active reminders and all tasks which are due today.
|WilliamReeder||11/24/11 6:49 PM|
On Android I need a separate tasks widget. Not mixed with my calendar -- separate. It should show what I requested in the previous comment.
|SajalB||11/24/11 9:54 PM|
William get Astrid on Android, it syncs with google tasks and has got good widgets .. However for recurring tasks you will still be stuck .. if you can then chuck out google tasks and switch to toodledo or RTM , I guess the google tasks developer died or got fired .
|ctn830||1/5/12 8:24 AM|
Which task app is best and will sync with Google task? Taskos or Astrid? I cannot wait for Google to fix their tasks and setting up a recurring event is only a bandaid. It's still not a task and doesn't have the check mark.
|ctn830||1/5/12 12:07 PM|
Try Gqueues. It looks like it may have solved the problem.

This was put out over a year ago and I don't see any of those changes being implemented. Grrrr.

I don't want to use gcal to set reminders for tasks, otherwise what's the point of the task function? Let's hope Google set up a reminder in tasks soon so that we can use more efficiently.

Google is more busy probably in designing the next social networking site after G Plus goes down. In the meantime use RTM or ToodleDo or actually anything else than google ;(
Yes we have been doing the same for social networking too, avoiding google, because their DEVelopment team is TOO SLOW to RESPOND.

2012: No not yet
Will come back in 2013, I'm sure I will write the same again.

Please implement the following:
1.) Recurring tasks
2.) Task sharing
3.) Task views/reports (overdue,current,completed, etc..)
You would greatly increase the number of people using Google Calendar, which means more cash from Advertisers!
Any progress updates are welcome :-)

It would also be very useful to be able to move a task from the task list to a specific spot on the calendar when an exact time to complete the task is determined. I really want Google Tasks to work because I need an integrated task list with my calendar.
|Nick Robinson||2/28/12 7:36 AM|
Its far from perfect but in our business we have two calendars set up called Outstanding tasks (coloured red) and Completed tasks (coloured green). Tasks are posted as calendar items for the date they fall due and transferred to the completed tasks calendar as they are done. That way in week or month view the status of each is easy to view. Recurring tasks e.g. pay payroll taxes are set as recurring appointments and as each is completed they are deleted selecting delete only this instance. If a record that the task is done is required it can be set up again as a single instance in the completed tasks calendar.
We time these appointments at times when there are no real appointments in the diary usually from about 3.00am to 7.00am. Its not ideal and does not replace a proper, shareable task management system but for small businesses with a small number of users or home use it has proven workable over about 18 months now.

Posted 13th January 2011 was your Blog sayng about how you did a survey and were going to improve Google Calendar Tasks. that was 15 months ago and still no improvements. Will any of the improvements ever happen?
|Black Rock Onyx||6/8/12 6:30 PM|
Given this was a top priority in voting, why is not available yet?
|jacksonpeebles||8/6/12 9:25 AM|
This really is a vital feature, and although I will obviously continue to use Google/Google Calendar in the future, it truly doesn't seem particularly difficult for Google to integrate repeating tasks considering the behemoth that Google is and its clear capability of doing so along with the aforementioned demand for such a feature. I would love to see this rather than having to use two services for my calendar/tasks, which I will otherwise be forced to do. If you could please give us an update on the progress/date of implementation for this feature, I would truly appreciate it!

I agree. Any update would be great. I am an avid user of Google tasks despite its shortcomings. I am eager for all of the priorities listed in the survey results. Please let us know what's going on. Thanks.

Wow, your January 2011 blog vote shows you really found out what was important to add as new features in tasks.
Shame it is now November 2012 and not a single one has been done.
