calendar entry GMT time zone

I am sync'ing a google calendar to my calendar app on my iphone 6 running iOS 8.1.2
I create a new calendar entry on my iphone using Pacific time zone and save the entry.
About a minute or two later I can see the same calendar entry time zone is changed to GMT.  I am trying to figure out why that is happening.  I log into google calendar and see that the calendar is specifically set to Pacific time zone.   I can see the new calendar entry on my iphone is specifically set to pacific time zone before it is saved.  

What else can I check here?

Also GMT is an anachronistic term.  UTC is a preferred way to refer to the GMT time zone these days.
