Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 5/30/12 6:48 AM
Note: Before posting a question below, please read both this post and a Google+ Local FAQ for business owners. Or watch a video by Googlers Vanessa and Jade covering the top user questions.

Wanted to give you guys a heads up on our launch today: Google+ Local. The big change is that we’ve given Google Places listings a whole new look. Beyond that, much is the same: You’ll still be able to manage your information via your Places dashboard, verifying basic listing data and responding to reviews. In other words, you do not need to do anything right now. If you use AdWords Express, your ads will operate as normal, automatically redirecting people to the destination you selected or to the listing. Offers will continue to function as is too.

Some other changes I wanted to point out before you ask:
  • Your verified Google Places listing will not display a checkmark on Google+ Local. Yes, we’re working on this.
  • You can no longer upload videos or use the Post to Place page feature.
  • We’ve adopted the Zagat scoring system (more on that here: http://goo.gl/JO7p1)
  • Reviews from Google and Zagat users will live on your local Google+ page and attributed to “A Google User” or “A Zagat user” until the user chooses to attribute their name with the review.
  • In your Places dashboard, the "See your listing on Google Maps" is currently directing you to the old Google Places page. We're working to update that link so that it redirects to the new local Google+ page. Stay tuned.

You also don’t have access to all the social features of Google+ — yet. Soon we’ll make it even easier for you guys to take full advantage of Google+’s social features and manage your listings on Google, especially for those of you who have already verified your Google Place pages. Look for updates on that in the coming months.

Read more over on the Google and Your Business blog: http://goo.gl/lhF6S
Or visit the Google+ Help Center for detailed information: http://goo.gl/lRjav

And please post your questions and feedback here on this thread, or on Google+ directly via the gear icon > “Send Feedback”. We’re looking at every piece of it.

Thanks,
Vanessa

All, many of you have been reporting that you're not seeing the "Reviews" button or customers experiencing review issues. Please give it a few hours. We're rolling out the above and your users may not be using the updated experience yet.

Vanessa,

Thanks for the update. We currently manage our Places account and our Google+ account with two separate logins. What is the best way to bring Places and Plus together? We have four office locations with Place pages and separate Google+ business pages for each location. Do we need to delete the Google+ business pages to allow the reviews to migrate over from Places?

Here are links to the relevant Places pages and Google+ business pages.

Places:
http://goo.gl/maps/PMf8 - Portland Office
http://goo.gl/maps/lA1f - Oregon City Office
http://goo.gl/maps/3kmZ - Hillsboro Office
http://goo.gl/maps/WtJO - Vancouver Office

Best regards,
Justin Baxter

Should users only able to post reviews from within Google+? Because I noticed that within the main search results, if I click on Write a review, it still lets me leave a review and star rating directly from the Places page.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 5/30/12 10:44 AM
@Justin - Keep managing them separately. We know it's not ideal right now, but we’re working to consolidate these pages into a single page where you guys can manage your presence across Google. We'll keep everyone posted on news in that regard.

@k.watson - That should go away soon, we're rolling this out over several hours. The Official Google Blog describes the new experience:

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here rossicone 5/30/12 11:27 AM
Hi Vanessa,

Can you please explain the difference of a Google+ Page compared to a Google+ Local Page? It seems like a lot of duplicate content? I don't want to spend time and money creating both for all of our clients if they will eventually merge into one in the future?

You mentioned to Justin that eventually the Google+ Page and then Google Place Pages are going to consolidate into one. So will there eventually be two pages- this consolidated page and the Google+ Local Page?

Thanks for all of your help,
Rachel
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here BusyVal 5/30/12 11:36 AM
So our customers are not able to leave reviews unless they are on Google+?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Colan 5/30/12 11:46 AM
" All, many of you have been reporting that you're not seeing the "Reviews" button or customers experiencing review issues. Please give it a few hours."

Are the review buttons returning to the Google Places pages?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here ClintS 5/30/12 12:04 PM
I'll be looking to update and claim ~600 profiles in the next week or so (all the same company).  Should I use the standard bulk upload function, or will there be a different route with the new Local+ changes?

Also, about changes to the Places page - Will the changes apply to the Local+ profile as well, or will I need to update each Local+ profile individually?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Colan 5/30/12 12:51 PM
Vanessa - How do you get a link to the Google+ local business page? I don't see a link.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here RogerWilliams 5/30/12 12:55 PM
Yeah more work! So what do we do about this 'At a glance' section showing incorrect information about a business? I work with lawyers and Google is saying they do types of law that they are not certified to do. This will cause extreme problems.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JoyHawkins 5/30/12 1:10 PM
I just left my first review from Google+ and I was all excited but I can't see it unless I'm logged in :(

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Colan 5/30/12 1:26 PM
I tried posting a review from Google+, and I also can't see it unless I'm logged in :((

Vanessa - I noticed you can edit business listings in Google+local, but where do you find a link for a listing if lets say you wanted to report a duplicate VIA the Troubleshooter?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here V.A. 5/30/12 1:28 PM
Hi Vanessa,

My company has the Google Places page under the owner's personal acc while the Google Plus page is under different account. So, how will we be able to consolidate those two and see the end result of a page and a G+ Local tab?
Do we have to create new Place page with the company acc and then we will automatically see it under the G+ Local tab on the company G+ page once it is verified or what do we do?

One more Q: Our Google Places acc was ranking number one for the local results, now it's gone!! It says 'Pending' Is it because of this change? What is going on?

Looking forward to an answer.

Thanks!

Best,
V.A.

rossicone: Can you please explain the difference of a Google+ Page compared to a Google+ Local Page? It seems like a lot of duplicate content? I don't want to spend time and money creating both for all of our clients if they will eventually merge into one in the future?

A Google+ page has all the social features available to Google+ users -- Hangouts, sharing to circles, video uploads, etc. A local Google+ page is just a new look to the Google Places listing, minus the social features. Those social features are coming soon, as I mention in my original post above. And as I also said, we know it's not ideal needing to manage two separate pages.

rossicone: You mentioned to Justin that eventually the Google+ Page and then Google Place Pages are going to consolidate into one. So will there eventually be two pages- this consolidated page and the Google+ Local Page?

There will eventually only be just one page to manage, with information integrated across Google -- Search, Maps, Google+, mobile.

You've got a few options:

1) You may create a Google+ page to try out the social features in Google+. Be sure to choose the Local category so that we can bring your multiple pages together to create one listing later on.

2) Go to this form — http://goo.gl/8apbo give us your email address, and we'll let you know when we merge your pages in to a single page — like the ones we feature on the Google and Your Business blog post (http://goo.gl/lhF6S).

3) Sit tight, and as we mentioned in the blog post, we're going to have a solution for everyone that's verified today that will make upgrading to the full local Google+ page experience seamless and easy.

@BusyVal - That's correct; reviewers need to be logged in to Google+ to leave a review. The review will be public and attributed to their Google+ name.

@Colan - We haven't rolled Google+ Local out completely yet. Please give it some time to reach everybody, then you should see the review buttons. If you log in to Google+ and go to plus.google.com/local, search for the listing, you should see the review button. And note, there will be no "Places page" anymore, only local Google+ pages. Also, your review looks live to me.

ClintS - I'll be looking to update and claim ~600 profiles in the next week or so (all the same company).  Should I use the standard bulk upload function, or will there be a different route with the new Local+ changes?

You should create a bulk upload file and manage them via the bulk upload management tool — that hasn't changed.

Also, about changes to the Places page - Will the changes apply to the Local+ profile as well, or will I need to update each Local+ profile individually?

Yep, they'll apply to the local Google+ pages (since there are no Place pages anymore). Again, you just won't have the social features of regular Google+ pages.

@Roger: See our Help article: http://goo.gl/e65Jj

@Joy: Can you check again? Still only see it when you're logged in?

Colan - Vanessa - I noticed you can edit business listings in Google+local, but where do you find a link for a listing if lets say you wanted to report a duplicate VIA the Troubleshooter?

Just grab the URL you see at the top of the local Google+ page.

V.A. - My company has the Google Places page under the owner's personal acc while the Google Plus page is under different account. So, how will we be able to consolidate those two and see the end result of a page and a G+ Local tab? Do we have to create new Place page with the company acc and then we will automatically see it under the G+ Local tab on the company G+ page once it is verified or what do we do?

You do not have to do anything — we've migrated the Google Places listing for you. Keep managing that formerly-known-as Places listing via your Places dashboard, under the same account you were using before.

V.A. - One more Q: Our Google Places acc was ranking number one for the local results, now it's gone!! It says 'Pending' Is it because of this change? What is going on?

Nope, nothing to do with this change. I don't know why it might be pending, but you should get in touch with the support team about it to see what's up:

http://support.google.com/places/bin/static.py?hl=en&ts=1386120&page=ts.cs

Select: I have verified > My listing no longer appears on Google Maps

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here V.A. 5/30/12 1:54 PM
Thank you! So, I suppose once the listing is up and running again I will see it under the G + Local tab on the company page even though they are managed from different acc?
Is that what is going to happen?

Thanks!
V.A.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 5/30/12 2:01 PM
@V.A. I'm not sure what you're asking ... there are two types of pages:
  1. Google+ page - regular ol' Google+ pages that you manage from your personal Google account. Includes social features (Hangouts, etc.)
  2. local Google+ page - Places pages with a new look and feel, managed via the same account you've always used to manage your Places listings. No social features.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here SMCuter 5/30/12 2:23 PM
Hi Vanessa,

I was wondering about the metrics for impressions/clicks/actions currently Available in Google Places (in the older interface, prior to the recent Google Places facelift)...will those metrics continue to exist for the Google+ Local pages? If so, will they be accessible via the old interface same as now? If not, will there be any official way to track clicks or actions for Google+ Local pages?

Thanks!
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 5/30/12 2:34 PM
@SMCuter Sign in to your Places dashboard and you'll see historical metrics and activity from your Place page as well as new click and impression metrics on the local Google+ page that originated from Google.com and Google Maps. Metrics originating from within Google+ Local or from searches within Google+ Local won't be displayed in the dashboard.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Local Business Rockstar 5/30/12 2:40 PM
Hi Vanessa!

Excited about the changes that are rolling out, even if it does mean more work right now...

Since we won't be getting metrics from G+Local via internally,
do you think it will be integrated into Analytics?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here .Monica 5/30/12 2:43 PM
Vanessa, if a user just has a gmail account will they be able to write a review or must they also sign up for Google+?

@Local Business Rockstar - I'm excited that you're excited! ;) I don't really have any future metrics plans to share, but when I have more information I'll definitely share it around and let you guys know.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here V.A. 5/30/12 2:47 PM
Vanessa,

I see...my understanding was that they will merge - the company page and the Place page? When I go to the company page I see G+ Local tab - I thought that I will see the G Places page there somehow... confusing!
So, they are staying separate and we cont managing them separately.
Thanks!

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JoyHawkins 5/30/12 3:11 PM
Vanessa - I LOVE these changes.  The layout looks awesome.  Yes, I see my 2 reviews now that I posted earlier on the 2 different businesses.  I can also see Colan's now too!  They did show up at the end of the review list (the one business has 17 reviews, Colan's and mine are the last 2) but they're there :)
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 5/30/12 3:21 PM
@V.A. - Yes manage them separately for now. We haven't merged anything, just redesigned the look of the Google Places listing.

@Joy - Yay! Glad you like.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JoyHawkins 5/30/12 3:30 PM
I have another question lol.  So for marketing companies, like the one I work for, after Google Plus and Google Places completely merge and there is just 1 page for both, will we still be able to manage the listing via the Google Places dashboard?  Do we have to have access to all the social features of their G+ page in order to help a business manage their listing?

Currently I know some businesses are sceptical about allowing marketing companies to be admins on their Facebook pages (rightfully so) because of the privacy of their customers and comments from their customers.  Just trying to figure out if we'll be able to manage G+ Local listings in the future without full access to the company's circles/clients/posts etc.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 5/30/12 3:33 PM
Yes I love it too! So many cool changes! Still trying to wrap my head around all of it and blog all the latest updates as I find them. WOW what an exciting day!

Great question Joy. I'm getting similar questions about lots of things regarding managing listings in the future.

@Joy WOW thanks for the great review and thank Colan too! Glad you guys got a lot out of my Places training.

@Vanessa, their reviews they left today are buried at bottom of page 2. So if we see folks in forum saying new reviews don't show up, maybe they are just out of order? Thinking maybe temporary during the update? But just wanted to mention to you.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Jaxcoffee 5/30/12 4:09 PM
Just a heads up for you Linda. I have been doing some local reviews on businesses as the Paso Robles Wine Network, and all of the reviews are landing right at the top of the review list.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Garconis 5/30/12 4:23 PM
Vanessa,

I am excited about this, but as many users here, because of of the lack business-friendly Google+, here is my current situation:

I have a personal Google account that I used to create my personal G+ profile, and also our G+ Business Page. I then created a Google Apps account that I used to manage the Google Places stuff and signed up for YouTube, etc. Now with that said...

I see the option (for both of my Google accounts) to "Manage this page" for the G+ Local Page. I haven't proceeded to do so, because it is my understanding that the Local/Places page will merge with the actual Google+ Business Page? People keep asking, and you say to "manage them separately for now"...but are the Local Page going to actually merge with the Business Page? This would be ideal. But with that said, I'm not sure how that would work when the two are managed by two separate Google accounts. (ideally I'd be able to manage the +Page [and the hopefully merged Local +Page] with both my personal Google account and obviously the businesses Apps account).

On another note, it would be nice to see YouTube better integrated into all of this. Seems odd that we can upload videos to Google+ and YouTube separately. Ideally both would be synced, and there wouldn't be two separate areas for uploading business videos.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 5/30/12 4:30 PM
Thanks for that Jack. I wonder if it's just timing? Joy emailed me today to tell me she tried leaving me a review, but it didn't show up. So then I think Colan tried and they both could only see the review in their account. Then they showed up later at the or she found them bottom of the pack. Maybe cuz they posted in the middle of this update?

I'm wondering though Joy or Colan - were you using desktop or phone?  Because we've seen reports recently that when some people leave reviews from mobile, they end up on the last page?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Anonymous Von Anonymous 5/30/12 4:34 PM
What is the best way for customers to leave anonymous reviews? Because of the nature of my business, my customers won't post reviews that are linked up to their Plus accounts, and they probably won't even create new anonymous Plus accounts if they have to link up their cell phones. I can think of plenty of businesses that are in this boat with customers who would leave legitimate reviews if they didn't have to announce to the whole world and all of their friends that they frequented that business.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here treebles 5/30/12 4:40 PM
I am afraid that anonymous reviews are no longer possible.
Even Google accounts without Google+ profiles are required to get a Google+ profile before being able to write a review on the new Google+ Local pages.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JoyHawkins 5/30/12 4:44 PM
I think Anonymous has a decent point though. I mean let's face it, if I got plastic surgery (for example), I definitely wouldn't want the world knowing, but if the surgeon did a great job, I would want to leave him a review.

I know the same could be said about negative reviews. I have had experiences with some extremely sketchy businesses and although I'd love to warn the world about them, I don't always want to tie my name to it because some business owners out there are nuts and will come after me (seriously...I've run into several instances of this).  I keep reading articles about business lawsuits over negative reviews.  I know that normally they go nowhere but the stress and hassle of dealing with it to begin with would make me hesitate to leave negative reviews.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Garconis 5/30/12 4:46 PM
I can see why Google and most businesses may disagree. But this is still a bad idea. You should at least be able to post as a "nickname" and not have it linked to your account. Most reviews I don't mind posting for the world to see. But there would surely be some reviews that I would write for certain Places that I'd rather no one knows for sure who the review is from.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Jan K 5/30/12 4:57 PM
A quick question about offers - when you click the "Is this your business" button on the new G+ Places page, it directs you to the google.com version of the Places dashboard complete with the Offer tab.  Are Offers still only available in the US and are their plans to roll them out to here in the UK too?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 5/30/12 6:05 PM
@Joy and Linda -- So I can't reveal too many details about how it's going to work, but I can say we're 1) definitely combing all the pages into one (so don't worry so much about the dupes now — I know that's tough) and 2) we should have those privacy concerns worked out so that you don't need to worry about that either. All will be revealed in due time, and I'll keep you all posted.

@Linda -- Out of chrono order, eh? Do you have some links to listings showing that (I'm trying to find yours)? I'd like to send some examples along -- you can even e-mail them to me too.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JoyHawkins 5/30/12 6:11 PM
Vanessa > Clearly I'm just not patient enough because now they're showing in the proper order.  Colan and I both left Linda a review today since we hired her last year and I forgot to leave her one :)  I see them now in the right order -  https://plus.google.com/115386391119160884163/about?hl=en
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 5/30/12 6:13 PM

@Garconis To be very clear here, we will be combining any Google+ page you may have created with any matching upgraded Google Places listing (what we're calling local Google+ pages). I mention this above, the few options you have:

You've got a few options:

1) You may create a Google+ page to try out the social features in Google+. Be sure to choose the Local category so that we can bring your multiple pages together to create one listing later on.

2) Go to this form — http://goo.gl/8apbo give us you're email address, and we'll let you know when we can combine your pages in to a single page — like the ones we feature on the Google and Your Business blog post (http://goo.gl/lhF6S).

3) Sit tight, and as we mentioned in the blog post, we're going to have a solution for everyone that's verified today that will make upgrading to the full local Google+ page experience seamless and easy.

@Jan K - Yep, Offers are still only available in the U.S.

@All Regarding real names -- Thanks for this feedback. What would be really helpful is if you pass this feedback along via the in-product Send feedback link. Go to Google+ Home tab, click the Gear icon (top right) and hit Send feedback. It just helps us bucket and count up all the feedback in one solid place.

I just went to my dashboard and it says pending review may take several weeks. This listing brings me a lot of work, now nothing.Several weeks! I e-mailed support on the 26. Can someone help? Will I still have my reviews or score rating for all of my reviews. If someone can check this out please. Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Garconis 5/30/12 6:27 PM
Vanessa, in response to your response above:

(1) I already have a Google+ Page tied to my personal account. Are you suggesting I create/claim a new one (via the new Local Google+ Page)  with my business Apps account? It's the business Apps account that I would eventually like the +Page tied to (without having to create a second personal profile first). It's also the business Apps account that the current Places/Local page is tied to.

(2) Does it matter what e-mail address I put into that form (the one that I currently use for Google+, or the Apps account that I WANT to use)? I assume it's just so I can get updates anyway...even though I already subscribe to the new Blog.

(3) I don't mind sitting tight, so long as there will be a solution for those of us like me (who created a personal AND a +Page with their personal account, but then created the Places (now Local) page with their business Apps account -- and would like to be able to merge both the +Page from the personal with the Places/Local from the business Apps account).

Thanks for the patience and all the help you're giving us. Not sure how you can keep up with all this AND manage to post nice YouTube videos too! :)
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 5/30/12 7:22 PM
Vanessa/Joy -

Joy posted my + page and reviews are in right order.

BUT I was looking at my old Place page - they still are at bottom of page 2.
Note: IM not worried about it at all, so don't go out of your way for me
Only posting so you'll know in case others in the forum bring it up or if you need something for the engineers to look at.

Still confused a little Vanessa. So the old Place pages are still out there PLUS the new + Local Pages?  I thought the Place pages changed or redirected, but I still got to mine by bookmark.
Will they stay separate like that for awhile, or is it just that's it's not fully rolled out yet?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 5/30/12 9:37 PM
I'm not sure when you really, finally won't be able to access the old Places listing. It's been rolling out all day — first in Google+ itself, then Maps, then Search. It just takes a while to get it all out the door. It might not be until next week, though, that you definitely won't be able to see those Places listings (we're working to get that fixed to cut down on any confusion). So I'd just sit tight.

And, good, I'm glad the reviews are in chronological order!

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here aarondds 5/30/12 11:35 PM
All of my places' local plus+ pages are displaying their 'Business Owner?' buttons even when I'm logged in as if they haven't been claimed.  They still show as claimed in my dashboard but if I click the 'Business Owner?' button it runs me through the postcard verification process.  Will I need to reverify all my listings?  Will duplicate listings I've suspended come back to life?

As an aside, if I have 3 locations in 3 nearby cities but my business has the same name in all 3 locations should I append the business' name on each local page with the city's name or should I have the same business name on all 3 pages?  (Example: Molen Orthodontics or Molen Orthodontics - Auburn).
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Flash (RER) 5/30/12 11:45 PM
Please read the first post carefully, your first question is answered there in the very first bullet point.  It states they are working on it, so please don't reverify in an attempt to fix it.

Regarding your second question, putting a city name as a descriptor in the name is against the guidelines of both Places and Map Maker.  Names should be the actual name only.  The city is known already via the address for each location.

Is there a manage account feature being brought in?

i.e. multiple users managing one listing?

It seems crazy that only one email address can manage a business listing!
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here .Monica 5/31/12 7:13 AM
I feel like most people handle this situation by creating a fake google account and will most likely do the same with their Google+ profile.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Colan 5/31/12 7:19 AM

Just grab the URL you see at the top of the local Google+ page.

I tried this and I got a "Please enter a valid Place Page URL.`"

Agreed.  The complete lack of anonymity on the new Google features is disturbing.  It's also the #1 reason why people I know won't join G+.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here WebmasterMD 5/31/12 7:22 AM
@monica

That's an easy (but wrong) way to achieve it if you have yet to set it up, but if you've already got it set up for a personal email then you have to hope it merges when you set a second profile up potentially losing data and reviews.

This is such an unprofessional way.

Account management/ software management should be a high priority. You can make the most wonderful software but if you can't manage it successfully it fails miserably.

Google have got it bang on in analytics and webmaster tools. They already have the structure why not adopt it for places (sorry google + local!!!)
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Garconis 5/31/12 7:44 AM
I shouldn't have to create a second/fake personal G+ profile with my businesses Apps account just so that the G+ Page is tied to the right Google account. Plus even if I did, I would either have to recreate the Page on my Apps account or just make my Apps account a Manager.

Ideally both the +Page and the +Local would be controlled by my Apps account. But right now only the Places is (now +Local). So that's why I am hoping there is a way to port over an existing +Page into my Apps account (without creating a fake personal account).

Basically if I can merge the +Page into the Places/Local then I should be OK since that would mean it'd all be under my businesses Apps account/email.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here TopSpots 5/31/12 8:03 AM

You can manage multiple Google+ Business Pages from one personal G+ account AND add others as managers of those Business Pages.

It is slick and as it should be.

~ Louie
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Garconis 5/31/12 8:11 AM
@TopSpots. It is not as it should be. Yes you can manage multiple pages from one personal account...which is nice since I have two business Pages. And I realize I can make my wife be a manager of one of them...as I already have. But I cannot make my Google Apps account (the main business Google account that controls everything else for the business including YouYube and Places) be a Manager (let alone THE owner) without creating a personal + profile first. I shouldn't be forced to create a second personal profile with my BUSINESS account, just to control my business +Page.

WOW really disappointed in the choice to go with Zagat scoring system. Users are familiar with a 5 star based system that is most common. So seeing a score of 2 or 3 for most people will make them think it is a poor ranking... I cant fathom why you guys thought this was a good idea...
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here treebles 5/31/12 8:30 AM
Colan,
On the Google+ Local page for the business click on the map. It should open Google Maps with a marker for the business.
Copy the correct URL for the business, for reporting purposes, from the browser's address, this URL is the usual URL with the cid value.
It is not as convenient like in the old Local pages but it will have to do.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here treebles 5/31/12 8:32 AM
I cant fathom why you guys thought this was a good idea...
I am guessing because Google bought Zagat and they did not want to spend a lot of time and money re-engineering it.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Garconis 5/31/12 8:41 AM
+1 on the weird Zagat ratings. Who the heck will know if a 27 rating is good or not? Maybe over time it will make more sense and just be second nature for casual surfers to know what the ratings are saying?

Also, are the Best Ever places ratings now obsolete?

Another unintended consequence.  I can no longer see the detailed listings from work.  I work for a large corporation which block access to social network; this is a common practice at large companies.  So, I can search on the map, but I can't open the Google+ Local listing.

Go to Google+ Home tab, click the Gear icon (top right) and hit Send feedback. It just helps us bucket and count up all the feedback in one solid place.

Ha ha. See, this makes my point for me. I went to follow your instructions, but when I did, I was forced to upgrade my account to a G+ account, and then my "Anonymous" pseudonym sets off alarms and sirens. This is the predicament my customers are in. I previously had to beg and cajole them to post reviews as it was. When Google started requiring new users to set up a profile -- even an anonymous one -- I lost half of the people who told me they would post a review. A few extra clicks cost me (and Google) lots of reviews.

Requiring reviewers to create a G+ account verified with a phone call or text is just going to be the end of my customers posting reviews. As +JoyHawkins pointed out, no one will use their real G+ account to say "I highly recommend this doctor for Botox shots" or "I really thought this counselor was great after my messy divorce". What it does do is crowd out the people that want to post legitimate albeit anonymous reviews, and creates a marketplace for shill G+ accounts that have been "verified" using a bunch of stolen cell phone numbers.

Seriously, just Google "Buy Real Google +1s". The first site boasts "Phone Verified Google Accounts of real USA people". The spammers will always find a way to get around whatever hurdles Google puts up. But if all the firewalls and defenses make it too hard for real users to participate, all there will be is spam.

Nope, not today.

m_j_gregory - I noticed on the new Google+Local pages that we are losing visibility to feeds pulling in images from outside sites. Will these images eventually appear or not?

Local Google+ pages should be working as the Place page: It's like a search result, made up of information from around the web, including photos that Google pulls in from various sources. If you're not seeing photos you saw on the Place page, I'd just give it some time. There's nothing we can do to manually put them on there, since it's all algorithmic, so sit tight and see if they show back up. In the mean time, you should definitely upload your own photos (if you haven't already).

Thank you for the link. I have submitted change request. Any idea on how long it is taking to get action taken on the 'At a glance' change request?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here MarketingGuy1 5/31/12 10:25 AM
Sorry I just have a quick question.

We currently have a Google+ page for our business. Obviously with the change we now also have a Google+ local page.  Will we be able to consolidate them, and if so, when?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 5/31/12 10:30 AM
Vanessa discovered an odd issue. Maybe just transitional issue?
(NOTE: I'm not worried about my Place page personally, just sharing in case it's an oversight or is coming up as problem for others.)

Yesterday my Local+ Page came up as it should.

Today when I do a search by biz name/city I get a bare stripped down page that I think is what an UNCLAIMED local+ page would look like.

Here is screenshot in case it changes on me: http://img1.uploadscreenshot.com/images/orig/5/15104085146-orig.png
(Just map no images and not much detail.)

You have to click the name or reviews to get to the full Local page that looks right: https://plus.google.com/115386391119160884163/about?hl=en
FYI just double checked and same thing happens when I search for my clients by name + city, so it's not just my listing.

IF that's by design and the search results pages are stripped down bare like that - then there should be a label next to or under the business name (for direct name searches) that says CLICK HERE to see full details.

Linda

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JoyHawkins 5/31/12 10:43 AM
I agree with Linda.  The average consumer probably doesn't realize you have to click the business name to see full details.  Sometimes having buttons that state the obvious like 'click here' or 'read here for more info' etc are necessary on websites for better usability so I'm thinking they would be useful here too.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 5/31/12 10:50 AM
Yes I think marketing geeks and techy types appreciate the sleek clean design.

But average Joe surfer and Mom and Pop SMBs are going to miss it. Heck when I 1st saw that top page I totally thought my Local+ page was either broken
OR had become unclaimed OR Place page was deleted, just leaving a remnant stripped down unclaimed page.

Thanks for the help Vanessa, I really appreciate it :)

Hope you haven't been too stressed out these last couple of days, you're doing an awesome job fielding all of these inquiries! Thanks again!
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here DJLocal 5/31/12 11:37 AM
@MarketingGuy1 - Vanessa stated above:  "Keep managing them separately. We know it's not ideal right now, but we’re working to consolidate these pages into a single page where you guys can manage your presence across Google. We'll keep everyone posted on news in that regard."
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Nate-HiddenEquity 5/31/12 11:44 AM
Vanessa,

I too was in the middle of loading 600+ Google Places and Google+ pages for a franchise. We entered the bulk upload on Google Places early last week and it's not approved yet (any idea how long that takes) Also, we were stopped at 50 Google+ pages. Since we are in the middle of this, not sure what to do now. Would prefer to keep moving forward on the Google+ pages and merge them together as you discuss in the other threads if it's possible to go beyond the 50 pages. If not, should we create 12 Google+ users to get the total of 600 locations?

Thanks so much for the help.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Damon Duncan 5/31/12 11:47 AM
Hey Vanessa & Top Contributors,

As always, Vanessa, et al are doing a great job answering all of these questions and we do appreciate it.

My question / concern is this. I'm a bankruptcy lawyer. Some of my clients may want to leave a review on how well (or poorly) we did but not have their name associated with having filed bankruptcy. Is my response to them that they can only post a review if they are willing to tell all of their social circles that they have filed for bankruptcy and used me as their lawyer?

I can imagine other professionals (doctors, etc.) that folks may not want to be necessarily publicly associated with but still provide feedback for others. Thoughts on this or potential future changes?

Again, thanks!

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here #1 Cochran 5/31/12 11:50 AM
This seems to be a real negative for businesses who are trying to build up their positive online reviews (formerly on Google Places); asking our customers to create a Google+ account just to review us seems like a tall order.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JoyHawkins 5/31/12 11:59 AM
@Damon - my company just started working with a Sex Therapist and I'm assuming she's going to be in the same boat.  I took Vanessa's advice and submitted some feedback via Google Plus (she posts directions above: "What would be really helpful is if you pass this feedback along via the in-product Send feedback link. Go to Google+ Home tab, click the Gear icon (top right) and hit Send feedback. It just helps us bucket and count up all the feedback in one solid place"

I submitted some feedback and recommended that maybe reviews for particular industries (like yours) should remain anonymous (maybe not to Google but at least to the rest of the world).
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 5/31/12 12:06 PM

Online Marketing Buddies.com - Will this change affect a businesses current position on the page and will the reviews remain?

VIUS - We noticed a major drop in rankings for our Place Page in the past week. Does this have anything to do with the design changes or is it the result of another Google Update?

Yesterday was an interface and design change. But generally speaking, ranking algorithms are always changing, so listings are always moving up and down. There's nothing specific to this launch, but the ranking of a listing a year ago is likely in a different spot now, and it will likely be in a different spot next year, or even next week!

MarketingGuy1 - We currently have a Google+ page for our business. Obviously with the change we now also have a Google+ local page.  Will we be able to consolidate them, and if so, when?

Please read what I've previously written in this thread.

@Linda and Joy I'll take your feedback to the team. It's working as intended though, like you would see on Google.com or maps.google.com -- do a search, pull up results, click to learn more.

@Nate-HiddenEquity Just wait for your bulk upload to be approved and manage it via the bulk management tool in the Google Places for business dashboard. Give it a week or two for both approval and the listings to be live.

@Damon As it stands today, users need a Google+ account to write a review, and that review will be associated with their Google+ identity and made public. Ditto to what Joy said -- use the Send feedback link.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Harpo7 5/31/12 12:21 PM
Vanessa,

Thanks for answering so many questions. I have one (sorry if it's a bit complex):

I currently manage a client's Google+ business page as myself (Patrick) on G+ (which is, I believe, how its supposed to go).

We've been having Places Page trouble, and were just about to go about claiming the unverified listings for a number of our client's offices using an email account with the same domain as the business. I understand this is a trust signal and will speed the verification process along.

However, the G+ page is managed by me, and my personal email does not have the site's domain. Will two emails/accounts be able to unify the G+ Business and Local Pages? Or will you need to use the same email account for both?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JoyHawkins 5/31/12 12:23 PM
@Vanessa.  Your head must be spinning by this point.  I just came across a new scenario.

I have a business that just randomly had a duplicate pop up which stole all his reviews.

These are the 2 Google Places URLs:

https://maps.google.com/maps/place?&cid=7770362176427767210 (the listing we manage in our dashboard)

Now if I am looking at those versions of the pages, I can see the duplicate is not owner-verified so it kinda helps me figure out how to get rid of it faster.  However, in G+ Local, I can't even find the duplicate by searching anything.  If I search in maps.google.com I found it, but when I go to the G+ URL, there isn't anything on there to indicate to me that this is a non-verified listing.

I'm just wondering as of next week (when the maps.google.com versions are gone), how I would know if it's owner verified since the maps.google.com is the only version that shows that at the moment?

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JoyHawkins 5/31/12 12:38 PM
One more to add to the pile (sorry).  The plus.google.com versions don't load on mobile phones.  One of the businesses I work with tried opening the link I sent him on his phone and got “this person does not have a public profile and has not shared any information with you.”

I tried it on my Android and got the same thing.  My sister tried it on her Iphone and got the same thing.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 5/31/12 12:40 PM

@Harpo7 We're testing it now, and we'll let you know how it's going to work when it actually happens.

@Joy Well, you'll be able to click through from the dashboard to the matching verified listing; though, right now, when you click "See your listing on Maps" it's taking you to the old Place page, not the new local Google+ page. We're working on that. If you pull up dupes in Google+ Local (or if you can't tell), it really doesn't matter if you're reporting from the real listing or the dupe since the teams will just pull them all up and lump them all together anyway.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 5/31/12 12:43 PM
@Joy - Re: mobile What link are you trying to pull up? Can't repro this one.

You don't need a G+ account to leave a review.

You do need a Google account (i.e. Gmail)... but not a G+ account. At least not yet.  :-)

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here treebles 5/31/12 2:21 PM
I am afraid that is not correct, you need both now a Google account and a Google+ profile to leave a review in the new Google+ Local pages.
There might be still a few old style Local pages floating around where you may still leave a review without a Google+ profile but I already noticed today that those pages are already missing the red Write a review button.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 5/31/12 3:47 PM

@Everyone Listen to Local Business Rockstar: <<I think the key take away right now is to try to be patient as the roll-out takes effect.>> Exactly, deep breaths and sit tight. :)

@Joy That looks like a bug, good catch. Sent to team.

@TopSpots trebles is right, you DO need a Google+ account. In order to have a + account, you need a Google account.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Boris 2012 5/31/12 10:43 PM
Why I can not remove my own review on Google + places?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 6/1/12 8:33 AM
@Boris - You should see a delete button right beneath your review. Does that not work for you? What's the link to the listing? What is your review?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here BayonTesting 6/1/12 9:32 AM
I agree with you 100%. This is pretty much kissing away my reviews on Google.

I do drug and DNA testing and while people do like to leave reviews sometimes, most people don't have G+ account nor do they want to link to their real name.

This is really a sad day for my business and Google's review system. All we can hope for now is a change once they notice reviews start going down in numbers (my resumption but could be wrong).
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Flash (RER) 6/1/12 11:10 AM
For those upset they won't be able to get a bunch of reviews due to their industry; do remember that you are still on level ground with your competitors.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here BayonTesting 6/1/12 11:19 AM
This is true and is probably the only positive thing for me I can get out of it.

We are a new business and fortunately most people don't leave reviews in my industry. We have more reviews then our competitors but it's not enough to jump over them due to their tenure, but that could change in time.

The other down side is that we've gotten a lot of positive feedback from customers that we are doing a much better job then our competitors so it was the perfect opportunity to get some more reviews.

I wish I knew they were changing it and I could have been more proactive getting reviews before they made the change. Either way, nothing I can do about it now.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JoyHawkins 6/1/12 11:43 AM
@Vanessa > Are the videos and share an update features coming, or are they gone forever?  I didn't see it addressed on the FAQ page.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here treebles 6/1/12 11:45 AM
BayonTesting,
You should consider expanding your presence to other online business directories that may offer users the possibility to write reviews.
You have either not claimed existing listings or are not found at all in other directories like Bing, FourSquare, Yahoo, Superpages, YellowPages, Hotfrog and Best of the Web.
It is not wise to put all your eggs in one basket when it comes to your online presence. Google is clearly doing changes to promote their own business interests in this struggle to beat Facebook at all things social and Google Places just became one other aspect of that struggle with the introduction of Google+ Local.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here m_j_gregory 6/1/12 11:53 AM
I don't believe I have seen this come up in conversation quite yet, I apologize if it has. But can anyone provide insight on the banner image/library of images/map shown prominently on the page? I am just wondering if there is an option to show the banner image, or library of images, or the map? Just curious.

I have attached the examples. Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks again,

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 6/1/12 11:59 AM
@Joy - I can't make any functionality promises, but if you go to the 15 businesses we've upgraded early you can make some guesses as to how it's going to work:

I shared a circle of them on Google+ yesterday:
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Garconis 6/1/12 12:03 PM
I would assume once they merge we would have control over that image space.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Garconis 6/1/12 12:03 PM
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 6/1/12 12:06 PM
@Joy, I can't  make any functionality promises either... But I can quote stuff Vanessa has already stated publicly. :-)

In her FAQ on the forum she said:

"A Google+ page has all the social features available to Google+ users -- Hangouts, sharing to circles, video uploads, etc.
A local Google+ page is just a new look to the Google Places listing, minus the social features.
Those social features are coming soon, as I mention in my original post above."

Red emphasis by me! :-)
Linda
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here BayonTesting 6/1/12 12:29 PM
I wouldn't say I'm putting all my eggs in one basket. I'm listed in every one of those your posted (minus FourSquare) plus many, many more you didn't list. Let's face it, a majority of people use Google for searching and Google integrates Local reviews into the front page of their results, something that Yahoo and Bing don't do.

My business does not live and die by reviews like many industries (restaurants, bars, etc) but getting reviews is certainly a nice perk, especially in my industry where reviews are practically non existent. While I agree to not put all your eggs in one basket, it isn't as practical to focus on gaining a ton of reviews on websites that hardly anyone uses. Google reviews is just a small piece of the puzzle for my online plan but it was an important piece and I'm sad to see I can't focus on it anymore like I'm used to.

I understand what Google is doing and understand they have to do what's best for them. Nothing I can do about but pout and complain
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Local Business Rockstar 6/1/12 12:42 PM
Ok, I can't predict exact what Google is going to do.... but answer this question...  WHY DOES GOOGLE GET 70% OF DESKTOP SEARCHES AND 97% OF MOBILE SEARCHES?

because they have always provided the BEST AND MOST RELEVANT USER EXPERIENCE..

The day that Google falters in this quest is the day that people will use a different search engine.  That means less ad revenue, shareholder dissatisfaction, and ultimately, its potential demise.

Without searchers and with US as business owners, ALL the search engines are toast!

So here is my prediction:

Right now, all reviews are going to be attached to a public G+ profile.  It HAS to be this way for now.  Here is why:

  1. Reduce spammy reviews!  A lot of people don't know that Google's web spam team didn't spend a lot of time in Google Places in 2011.  So there was A LOT of abuse of the review system due to anonymity.
  2. In order for Google + to be successful, there HAS to be more interactive and communication within the G+ community.  Influencing people to join G+ to leave reviews increases user engagement and interaction.
  3. Google has been doing its very best to make sure that its results are as ORGANIC as possible without manipulation.  Remember, Google runs off a search algo!  Could you imagine the corruption if Vanessa had the ability to make manual changes tp organic listings??  "Hey Vanessa, here is X dollars to put me at the top of page 1?"  lol... not happening
In the meantime, here is my thoughts on two resolutions that Google+ Local can make regarding business categories that don't lend to public display:

  1. Google can tweak the algo based on search queries so that reviews play LESS of a ranking factor for various niches.... bankruptcy attorney, plastic surgeons, medical testing facilities, etc.  That way, it just isn't as big of a deal to getting public reviews and a fair playing field.
  2. After being able to test the effectiveness of public reviews, I can see Google setting an option to "mask" your review.  Google will still know who wrote the review and can filter it for spam, but you would have the option to set up a nickname. HOWEVER, the algo would give less "TRUST" to this review and have less of an effect on any rankings.  Jeez, do you think with the new "Super Reviewer" status already implemented in G+Local, that reviews coming from these users will carry more weight in terms of rank?
Everyone gets so caught up in the "magic button" mentality or trying to "game" the system.... Yes I believe the vast majority of people are honest and want to be sure to get authentic reviews.  It really is SO EASY if you know what you are doing and run a good business giving people what they want.  Believe it or not, and mark these words.... EVENTUALLY IT WILL BECOME ALMOST TOO EASY TO GET REVIEWS WITH G+LOCAL! In fact, Google might have really opened up Pandora's Box with review spam.

Last point:  Keep your focus on the BIGGER picture....

HOW EXCITING IS IT THAT WE CAN NOW HAVE A DYNAMIC PLATFORM TO COMMUNICATE AND ENGAGE WITH CUSTOMERS THAT WE NEVER HAD BEFORE WITH GOOGLE PLACES??

We will all have much more control how we disseminate information to the public using a trusted Google property.   I give the Google Team SO MUCH credit for deciding to go in a direction that benefits everyone and giving us more freedom.

So, yes, there are going to be even more changes and more bumps in the road.  We have had issues with our own clients, but long-term, if you are doing the right things, you will win in the end.  We get frustrated too.  Hopes this helps somebody!

Remember, pain is temporary, but GLORY lasts forever!
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here treebles 6/1/12 1:05 PM
HOW EXCITING IS IT THAT WE CAN NOW HAVE A DYNAMIC PLATFORM TO COMMUNICATE AND ENGAGE WITH CUSTOMERS THAT WE NEVER HAD BEFORE WITH GOOGLE PLACES??
I would adventure to say, not that exciting, I would not be surprised if most small business owners would give a rat's ass about the introduction of Google+ Local. Probably all they want is to have a way to be found on business searches to drive customers to their door steps and nothing else.
It was the original intent, when the Local Business Center was launched what seems like eons ago, to provide an online business presence to small business owners that at the time did not have an effective online presence.

I understand that from your perspective as a SEO marketing specialist that the launch of Google+ Local gives you new opportunities to expand your business, but I am not so sure that other business owners will embrace the Google+ Local with so much enthusiasm. They will have to adapt and work with it if they want to show on Google searches but there might be a lot of complaints if many of the bugs that plague Local listings continue to plague Google+ Local listings.

This transition, although with a clear intention of making changes to the business owners experience hopefully for the better, is nothing more than another battle front in the attempt by Google to dethrone Facebook as the king of all things social.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Jaxcoffee 6/1/12 1:14 PM
With all due respect, I find the argument that Google is after nothing more then to dethrone Facebook to be kind of weak.

Businesses today, be they large or small have to engage with their customers. It's just the way it is today. If you don't do it, you will not survive online.

The public at large is demanding that from businesses, and you have to pay attention to what the public is wanting. That's what Google recognizes, and has made adjustments accordingly.

I solute them for doing so.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here SQLPerformance 6/1/12 2:33 PM
All the sample businesses are eateries and leisure activities which are social based.

Not any real economically important manufacturing and physical service users.

There are only so many hours in a day and for a small one person or principal business where are they going to find the time to build up a circle of 20,000, a local paper circulation, to get 100 jobs?
I Twitter quiet happily where you can follow people without great contact and vice versa, but I find doing the same in Google+ where you tend to link to peers is somewhat naff so I do not see it as a promotion opportunity. Its fine if you are Cadbury with addicted users and Olympic stars hosting hangouts.

I see old reviews are showing less the blue profile links.  Do we have to ask the reviewers to get a Google+ account to re-verify the reviews?

I have 3 questions I was asked by a client:

A.  In a search result the LH entry is not showing his business name, but some heading from a blog? which is not even for the search query, Car Accident Lawyer, or the business name but, Motor Cycle Accident Lawyer, so the searcher will naturally skip over.

B.  They will have 1 Google+ account, once a duplicate from somewhere is dealt with, but the Places account is in a separate email account.  How will you link them up later as you said will be done?  Which account do we email you to be alerted when the merge will be done?

C. When the Place has to be managed in a Google+ account what happens when the Places entry is Suspended because of duplicates in Map Maker made by Google bots or Moderators?  Presumably you will have to un-suspend the Places account.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here SQLPerformance 6/2/12 1:08 AM
I am concerned a about third party access to a 'Places' account where a client wants this to be managed.

At the moment you can create a free non-gmail email account and share the password so a third party can manage your Places account without access to any other account functionality.

I see you are enabling manager access to Google+ for corporate accounts.

Are you going to add a feature for 'Places' in Google+?.

Do we need to set up a separate Google+ account for 'Places' and our Social presence?
Will Suspended 'Places' accounts in Google+ be reactivated once the data problem is sorted out?
Obviously its not to good if a user looses all their Google+ circles and so on because of a 'Places' issue.

You say send an email from your 'personal' account to be notified about merged Google+ and Places accounts but if we need a separate Google+ account to isolate 'Places' for access and possible Suspended problems how do you know which Google+ account to link to?

What about Places merge issues?  Are we going to get our Circles account merged with someone else's Places data?

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here theflyer 6/2/12 9:39 AM
Vanessa, I am really surprised by the requirement that all reviews must be public.  Given that you've moved places into Google+, why can't people leave reviews that are only visible to certain circles?  This seems like a significant privacy problem that will hinder the creation of reviews.  Imagine your own life; the things you'd most like to review are the business around you (your local surroundings that you visit most frequently) but would you really want people to be able to use those reviews to narrow in on the exact block, or even building, where you live because they can build a heat map of the places you review?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 6/2/12 2:38 PM
@SQL As I've said repeatedly and in this FAQ: Keep managing your Places listing, now the local Google+ listing, as you always have. When the time comes to merge the two pages, we will let you know exactly what you have to do and we will get your accounts in order. If an account has been suspended, it has been suspended, so no we're not reinstating it.

@Don - You should send that feedback to the product team directly: Go to the home screen on Google+, hit the Gear icon (top right), select "Send feedback."
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here theflyer 6/2/12 2:47 PM
@Vanessa - Thanks for the reply.   I did submit the feedback and even found a Googler who has never posted a thing publicly on their G+ stream but has many reviews with lots of location information now linked to that G+ profile to use as an example.  Maybe that person is okay with that and maybe not.  It's impossible to know.  I do know that most of my friends and family will never submit reviews given those constraints.
Google+ Local: Learn more here J M Baxter 6/3/12 2:23 AM
@vanessa - Google once encouraged business owners to provide review kiosks for customers. Is this still permitted? Can we provide a computer terminal and phone number for clients to create a "one and done" G+ account for the sole purpose of posting a review? If a business ends up with a dozen of these profiles linked to new reviews and the business's phone number, what will the effect be? Will they be cloaked as spam? Will the listing be penalized?

We are concerned about how it will look if we have dozens of rave reviews that abruptly cut off in May of 2012, and thereafter become stale. Will Google provide businesses the option of opting out of reviews altogether to avoid this situation?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 6/3/12 10:08 AM
Justin, sorry I know you asked Vanessa specifically and she'll likely answer later, but wanted to add my 2 cents.

See this thread: https://productforums.google.com/d/topic/business/712uTMZzmRs/discussion for a good discussion of the pros and cons.
I don't believe Google ever ENCOURAGED. I think it was mentioned once. Blumenthal and I don't think it's the best practice and I personally don't think it's safe and don't believe G condones. (My personal opinion.)

I also don't believe G will offer an opt-out for reviews. They want all that user generated content and WANT users to be able to read what others think of the business.
Plus think about it this way - if a business could opt-out then the total scammy, rip off, horrible service companies could hide their flaws and anyone searching would not know to steer clear.

Linda
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here SQLPerformance 6/3/12 3:02 PM
'  If an account has been suspended, it has been suspended, so no we're not reinstating it. '

I know you are busy.  My point was about the coming merged Places and Google+ account and the following effect of a Suspension, Pending Review or merged data from another company on the Circles and co-joined Places data.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here vanessagene 6/4/12 8:58 AM
@Justin - Yeah we don't encourage or discourage explicitly -- please see our guidelines

@SQL I'm not really following what you're asking.

What about Places merge issues?  Are we going to get our Circles account merged with someone else's Places data?

That wouldn't happen -- Circles information and listing information are completely separate. They won't be merging.

I'm not exactly sure how to go about reporting this problem, so I'll try to lay it out. Prior to May 29 2011, my places page was showing for searches in my area in the top 3. My places dashboard showed many searches for the prior days. Then on May 29th, the listing no longer appeared for local searches, or on the map. My places dashboard shows 0. I did a location specific search of "Chicago Heights Taxi", and my business does appear in the normal search results, but when you click the link for "show map of...", there is a very brief showing of the business location, then it takes me to the map page with no showing for my business.

I've tried to "nudge" my places listing by updating my business hours, with no luck. Please help.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here jrplacesplus 6/4/12 10:41 AM
I have a similar issue.  One of the Places pages I manage for a customer disappeared on May 30 from local searches and the map.  When I click on the " See your listing on Google Maps" I get a error of "We currently do not support the location".

So my questions, and I have read the FAQ and have the messages in this thread, is:

If the automated conversion of a places listing to a Google Plus Local listing did not work:
1. What do we do?
2. Who at Google do we contact?

Customer is in a major panic seeing companies in the listings and his not there.   Competitors from 100 miles away are even there.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Perno 6/4/12 10:44 AM
It's creepy that eveyone can see my real name when I post a review for a local business, can you bring back nicknames?  I'll be using Yelp and other sites until this is changed.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JoyHawkins 6/4/12 10:59 AM
@ezcab8215 + jrplacesplus > I don't think these ranking issues have anything to do with this Google + Local change.  Businesses' rankings on Google change all the time.  From my experience, having 0 impressions in the dashboard usually means a duplicate listing exists for your business or your listing isn't live currently.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 6/4/12 11:01 AM
@ezcab8215 - Please start a new thread. You will get buried in this one which is about an important new update. We can't go off topic to help you in this thread, but will watch for your new one and help you there.

@jrplacesplus  - The link inside the dashboard to view on maps does not work right now. Need to search maps via phone, then by biz name + city,st to see if the listing is live. I have not seen listings get the do not support problem specifically due to this update. It's normally due to problems or violations on the listing.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 6/4/12 11:10 AM
Great Q came up in another thread. Reposting it here with my best guess.
NEEDS TO BE ADDED TO FAQ (if it is, I missed it)

BrianJBarron asked"We use QR codes and links on our client's websites that go directly to their (now old) places pages where users could leave feedback or read others reviews. Will these links eventually forward to the Local Plus page of the business, or do we need to change our printed marketing QR codes and links on the client's sites?"

I replied: "Great question Brian and should be addressed in the FAQs but I don't believe it is.

People also have direct links to their Place pages on their site and embedded maps so lots of reasons we need those old pages redirected.
I am certain everything will redirect, but it would be good to get a definitive answer."

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here jrplacesplus 6/4/12 11:24 AM
Thanks Joy.  He doesn't have 0 impressions, he has thousands.  The listing just disappeared last week.  1-5 place for over 100 different keywords to missing.  Again, dashboard shows thousands of impression in past 30 days, until that moment. I believe the conversion failed.

Thanks Linda.  The link works on 3 of the 4 business on my dashboard that are still showing up on maps.  It doesn't work with this one that has disappeared from place/plus local/maps.  I'll looked at that link you gave and will troubleshoot and contact G support via that.  Course, everything is "wait a few days to get an answer".

Wondering if I should just start a fresh plus local page for him.  Which is why I asked "what do I do now?"

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JoyHawkins 6/4/12 11:28 AM
@JR - If you want to start a new thread and post more details about the business you're talking about (phone number, name, link etc) I could try and look at it to see what might have caused it to disappear (just some theories) but I really don't think it's related to this thread.  This thread isn't about specific businesses' ranking problems, it's about questions regarding the new page formats of Google + Local.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 6/4/12 11:33 AM
jr Ditto what Joy said. We'll try to help if you post complete details in a new thread.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here PC Made EZ 6/4/12 1:55 PM
Vanessa,
Thanks for all the great info/replies. Im still a bit confused as to what I should do here. So I created my places page back when I just started the business and as such it was created under my personal Gmail account. I also created a personal Google + account when Google + came out. I would like to setup (if need be) a Google + for Business page and have the old Places page setup with it but I would obviously not want to have Places linked with my personal Google + account. Thoughts? What do you recommend I do here?

@Linda - I added a bit about URLs to the FAQ.

@PC Made EZ - I tried to make everything very clear in our FAQ:

Hey Vanessa,

I just noticed the website URLs on most of the listings I just looked up are giving me a 400 error.  Examples:

Vanessa, thanks for taking your time to help us.

Two little questions:

If I want to become the admin of a Google+ local page? I mean how can I change the head banner or the profile picture?

And is it true that someday you will merge the Google Places and the Google+ Page?

Thanks a lot!

Phil, yes they will be merged eventually. Read the first few posts in this thread. There is also a FAQ thread pinned in this forum.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Jenlu 6/5/12 7:08 AM
I am very happy reviewers cannot post under anonymous names any longer.  My small business has taken a hit from an angry customer posting many posts under different names and ranting on long reviews about my store.  I hope soon Google will remove the option to post negative reviews altogether and just use the Zagat scoring system.  This way  Google will not have a format for crazy hostile people to post personal attacks and unfounded negative reviews.  After all, all customers really want to know is if you recommend the business or not
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here NCGdesign 6/5/12 1:21 PM
I work at a communications firm that manages social media and online advertising for many of our clients. I've been reading everything I can find about the switch from Places to Google+ Local, and I'm still unclear about a couple of items.

1) Do you need to have a Google+ profile to manage a business page?
I know the official announcement says we should continue to manage the info from the Places dashboard, but it doesn't seem to give access to the features on the new Google+ page (photos, for example). Would creating a Google+ profile solve this?

2) Does a business page need to be attached to an individual's Google+ profile, or can you create a Google+ account for a business in general?
Obviously, as a third-party vendor, we don't want to link clients' pages to our own accounts, and clients shouldn't need to give us access to their personal accounts for us to manage their pages. Or, what if the account holder leaves the company?

Thanks,
~Elin

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here stuefi 6/5/12 6:51 PM
have you ever thought about posting a negative review about a place with your real name? i think thats too dangerous, although honest...

I think if you are going to take the time to post a negative review and have a major impact on a business, you should OWN IT.

Hello,

Thanks so much for all of the helpful information.

Is there an update on this item?
  • Your verified Google Places listing will not display a checkmark on Google+ Local. Yes, we’re working on this

  • I am in the process of of auditing 700 of our clients to see if they have claimed listings and I can't always tell with the new interface. Any advice would be great!

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Aimco 6/6/12 8:28 AM
I manage about 155 listings on Google.  The Places pages are managed under one account, and the Google+ pages are managed under individual accounts.  From what you say, it seems like the Places and Google+ pages are going to be merged.  How does this work for my situation?
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here RonLaughton 6/6/12 10:40 AM
@vanessagene @JoyHawkins Thank you for identifying the mobile bug with Google+ Local links. I'm reproducing it too, and would like to add my wishes for a speedy bug fix.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 6/6/12 11:53 AM
@Alicia, I have a tip for you, but it may be cumbersome to do manually for that many listings. You can still get to the OLD Place page right now if you know how. (But they could go away any day now.)
If you can get to the old page it still clearly states if verified or not.

Halway down see: OLD PLACE PAGES AND CIDs

@Aimco. FYI big mistake managing your clients under 1 account. All it takes is violations in a couple listings and Google can suspend the ENTIRE account which hurts all the other innocent clients that are in it. We have SEOs and agencies coming here all the time crying when it happens and it can be a horrible mess!  (If you want to discuss or get guidance on that particular issue, please start a new thread.)

"From what you say, it seems like the Places and Google+ pages are going to be merged.  How does this work for my situation?"

Google will not just publicly tell one person in a forum post in advance of an official announcement how it will work. My strong guess is they don't even know yet and are still working out all the details, because there are tons of different account ownership issues that need to be addressed for the merges in different types of situations to work properly. So you'll need to sit tight and wait for an announcement.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JoyHawkins 6/6/12 12:49 PM
I just wanted to agree with what Linda said to Aimco.  I've made that mistake in the past and it really sucks.  I would slowly start getting them all set up in their own accounts ASAP so that it's more of a gradual thing and you don't have to do them all one one day.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here MarkDacillo 6/6/12 11:11 PM
    Hi Vanessa,

As a company we are working and doing Google places listing for our clients, my question is how will I know if the listing is VERIFIED or NOT since the status of the listing is not being shown on the Goolge+ Local , i was able to check the work around to get to the old Goolge Places Listing Url where we can quickly check if its verified or not since it has the Status on it, but unfortunately as you said it was already redirected to the Google+ Local listing.

Is there anyway to know the status of the listing? or we just have to wait untill G+ local fix the issue. One more thing about the merging of the Goolge+ Page and Google+ Local, does this mean that we dont need to create Google+ Page for the businesses we are handling and just wait for the possibilty that the Google+ Local will be like as Google+ Page meaning merged together.

Thank you so much and looking forward for your answers.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 6/6/12 11:32 PM
    Hi Mark,

Unfortunately Vanessa has moved on to a new position at Google and no longer works in this department. :-( We miss her! But there is a new CM named Jade and she's great.
(See post at top of forum.)

But I'll try to answer your Qs.

Yes if you can't get to the old Place via the method I shared on my blog because it's already re-directing,  then I believe you'll just need to wait for the fix.

"does this mean that we dont need to create Google+ Page for the businesses we are handling and just wait for the possibilty that the Google+ Local will be like as Google+ Page meaning merged together."

Yes I would wait. Eventually the new G+ Local pages will morph into G+ pages.  However if you have any clients who had already set up a G+ page there should be a way to merge them.

that we cannot yet resolve. We hope to have a resolution soon for this
issue, at which point we will be in touch with next steps to help you return
    your business to Google Maps."

My changes to a map listing had been pending for 2 weeks - then today I get this. Should I start from scratch and build a new places account? I have a + account and a + page, how can I speed this along?

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here treebles 6/7/12 10:45 AM
probably you cannot, there is no guarantee that whatever technical issues are affecting the display of your Local listing are going to be solved by creating a new listing.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here georgia313 6/7/12 11:00 AM
Not a new listing - set up a whole new account.  I can't be off maps for an extended, open-ended period of time.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 6/7/12 11:29 AM
"Should I start from scratch and build a new places account?" "I can't be off maps for an extended, open-ended period of time."

It's super tough to predict how things like this will go and I don't have a crystal ball to predict when this will be fixed.

BUT in general (in most cases) I strongly advise NOT starting over with a new listing unless your listing is in a severe penalty state called purgatory. (This is not that.)
Starting over is in NO way a quick fix and could take MUCH longer than the bug fix may.

    1) New listings have to start over in the index. It can take a week before they even show up at all.
It can take around 6 weeks before they ever even show up in search. So it's as good as having a dead listing for about 6 weeks as far as new traffic goes.

    2) Sometimes new listings never build up to their previous ranking. So even once it ranks it may be on page 3 where no one will see you instead of page 1 where you used to be. (or whatever)

    3) Reviews are in part tied to CIDs so if you start a new listing you may lose all your reviews. Sometimes they reattach eventually but no guarantees.

    4) If you start a new listing you MUST delete the old one because you can't have 2 - it could get you suspended.

    5) The bug could be fixed in a matter of days and you'd be up again, instead of having all the negative consequences as a result of 1, 2 and 3 above.

Again, I can't advise because I don't know what's going to happen with this. Just sharing some facts and opinion.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Jaxcoffee 6/7/12 1:06 PM
I would suggest you also look into other business listing services that will still help you by creating web content about your business. Google+Local should just be one part of a more comprehensive marketing effort.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here georgia313 6/7/12 1:08 PM

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here jim.jaggers 6/7/12 1:17 PM
    Georgia,
As the email told you, your Google+ Local listing is not coming back until Google fixes its bug and there is nothing you can do to make it happen faster.  At least nothing any of us know about yet; some smart guy might figure out a work-around soon (has anyone heard from Nyagoslav lately?).

Now is a perfect time to broaden your marketing efforts.  You can't control what Google does with your listing, so you should not count on it as your sole source of leads.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here followsadies 6/7/12 1:18 PM

I have a few listing that have the categories all out of order... has anyone else noticed that? Map Maker and Places Dash have the correct first category but on the Google+ Local Page its wrong. For a chiropractor of mine it lists acupuncture as the first category. While acupuncture is a service he provides - I don't want it to be one of the two categories that are visible to his potential customers. I would rather highlight other services. Any thoughts?

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here georgia313 6/7/12 1:19 PM
I'm sorry, if I seem abrupt. But, I have local campaigns on yelp and other local platforms. Given that the google maps is the only first page first page visibility for local searches and my listing is in some undefined limbo that I can't rectify, well... I apologize.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here followsadies 6/7/12 1:21 PM
    That's good advice Jim :)
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Jaxcoffee 6/7/12 1:23 PM
We were told that the categories are chosen based on how relevant they are to the overall business information. All categories are still present, but only two show. No control over this issue by the business owner/admin.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 6/7/12 1:42 PM
We were recently told by someone at Google that the 1st 2 categories in your dashboard are the 2 that would display. But that may have changed. And Google sometimes adds or changes cats even before this update.
For several months my 1st category was Physician, on my Internet Marketing related listing.

Only thing I can think of is possibly doing a search for "undesirable category" (space) "(555) 222-4444" and compare to "desirable category" (space) "(555) 222-4444". Would be interesting to see if the undesirable one is more prominent and IF deleting that cat from some citation sources would impact the order. Not saying it would, just saying...

I had not looked into it yet but I just noticed a couple of my previous Dental client's cats are now Dentist, Dental Clinic. I NEVER use that 2nd cat because it tends to attract the wrong type of patient. So maybe that's just like a default industry cat that Google thinks is appropriate for most Dental offices? Not sure.

    Hi Jade and Linda,
If I fill out that form, does this mean my local Google+ page will be considered for an early upgrade to merge with my Google+ Page if it is verified in my Dashboard?
I wanted to clarify because it says, "In order to be considered you must have your business verified in Google Places for Business and have created a local Google+ page." We did not create our local Google+ pages. Google created them for us as they transferred our information from our Google Place Pages listings to create them.
Thanks for all of your hard work and help in this forum and elsewhere in your blogs and YouTube videos. You both have been a tremendous help already. I really appreciate it!

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here treebles 6/7/12 4:55 PM
    rossicone,
I think you have a few definitions mixed up.
The Google Places/Local listing were converted to what Google calls the Google+ Local pages in anticipation of the integration of the Local listings with Google+.

After the introduction of Google+, Google allowed businesses to create business' Google+ pages that are called Google+ Page for businesses. These pages are not Local listings, they are just Google+ pages with features for businesses.

That form is referring to the integration of those the new Google+ Local pages with the Google+ Page for businesses, for those businesses that have both, to upgrade the Google+ Local listing to the full Google+ experience.

Given all the warnings and risks associated with this early upgrade I would say let somebody else to be the guinea pig.
If you are adventurous on the other hand, knock yourself out.

It seems that you may not have a Google+ Page for businesses, if you do not you will need to create one to qualify for the early upgrade. Google is not necessarily accepting everybody that applies.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 6/7/12 5:50 PM
I think one of the confusing problems and I've been meaning to tell Google about this...

When you set up a Google+ Business page, you can select a category and one of the categories is LOCAL. Super confusing and much of the documentation EVEN MONTHS AGO before any of these recent changes referred to Local Google+ pages. (Not the new Google+ Local pages as we call the new Place pages.)

So in that early merge request - when it says "In order to be considered you must have your business verified in Google Places for Business and have created a local Google+ page."
I think the 2nd part means you need to have already set up a Google+ page with LOCAL selected as the category. (IE a Local Google+ page)

Really confusing semantics they need to work out having the OLD Local Google+ pages and the new Google+ local pages.

Note see post back in Nov announcing the new Local Google+ pages: http://searchengineland.com/google-pages-now-open-for-businesses-brands-places-more-100217

Here are Google help docs about how to create a Local Google+ page. TOTALLY different than the Place pages that just morphed into Google+ Local pages.
Confusing branding or just an oversight they should have caught and should explain. Official Google docs here - Create a local Google+ page

    Hi Vanessa and Jade,

Thanks for all the great info!

I work with a business that has 100's of locations.  They have a primary Google Plus business page, but have not (and were not planning to) have G Plus pages for each of their locations.

I have searched as diligently as I could, here and all the normal resources, and couldn't find any very specific information about how Google plans to deal with this specific case.  My thought is that it will be very difficult to actually manage 100's of local G Plus pages -- especially to monitor customer interactions there -- and that it would be far more convenient to manage the social aspects from the single centralized G Plus business page.

Could you comment on how this might work, and whether there's anything we should be doing in preparation?

    Thanks!
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here rossicone 6/8/12 11:18 AM
Thanks Linda for all of your help! I didn't realize that Local Google+ pages and Google+ Local pages were different! The language is very confusing because everything sounds so similar. Thanks for the links as well- they helped clarify things for me.

    Nope."

Key word being "yet", so this will be implemented at some point?

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Josh Closser 6/8/12 12:17 PM
Regarding Naming (First Name / Last Name) When Creating A Google Account For Client Business's Page/Local Listing:

When I am creating a google (google+) account for a business, a first and last name is required. I am trying to avoid creating a duplicate first/last name account or an account with initials to circumvent this issue. Are there any options being looked at to solve this in the future?
    • EG:  "Is this a business?" in field 1, if yes then provide a business name and business contact name entry fields // if no enter first/last name.

I saw a similar question above, but not quite the same.

    Thanks
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here jim.jaggers 6/8/12 12:26 PM
At this time, every Google+ for Business page must be associated with and individual person; this is the actual account holder, not the business.  You can associate multiple Google+ for Business pages with a single personal account.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Josh Closser 6/8/12 12:36 PM
    Thanks Jim

The Google+ for business pages are going to merge/transition into the google local pages though, correct? And eta on multi-user ( or changing authorship ) is unknown.  Thus I would want to create the pages under the client accounts now futureproofing them right? :)

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here jim.jaggers 6/8/12 12:40 PM
Unless you plan to use the social features of the Google+ for Business pages, I wouldn't even create them.  It is just one more thing to manage.

Google+ Local will take over for Google+ for Business.  We don't know when that will happen, how many stages to the conversion there might be, or what the end product is going to look like.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Garconis 6/8/12 12:45 PM
The main flaw with Google+ Business pages is the fact that you need them tied to a personal account. Most people, including myself, have a personal Google account and a business Google account. The only way to make a Google+ Business Page is to create it with your personal Google+ page (of which is often done with the personal Google account).

Therefore the business Google account has no tie to that businesses +Page. And the only way to remedy this currently is to create a second/fake Google+ profile with that business account. But I don't want to resort to that. I want my business email to be the account that controls the +Page. Especially since that email controls all other Google products...now including the new Local Google+ Page.

So hopefully the merge will fix the issue so I don't have to use my personal Gmail account for business Google+ stuff.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Josh Closser 6/8/12 12:47 PM
    Jim,

Am i understanding this right; eventually the profile/personal account google + will be joined with the Google + Local, so for now to avoid managing two profiles > the personal google + (social features) and the business page, just make the business page (which will convert to local) until they merge everything into one.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Josh Closser 6/8/12 12:48 PM
    Garconis,

Yeah, when I referred to seeing a similar question, it was yours :)
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here jim.jaggers 6/8/12 12:58 PM
I would use your Google+ Local page as your base page for now.

To @Garconis's point, you don't have to have a Google+ account to manage a Google+ Local page, but you do have to have one to manage a Google+ for Business page.  I don't know what will be required in the future, but I'd bet on Google+ Local eventually needing to be managed with a Google+ account.

For true small businesses, I don't think it is too big of a deal.  I manage all of my listings from "store" accounts now.  Each store account does have a person's name on it, the store manager typically.  But the account is not the property of that manager and we would pass it on to the new owner.  I can see potential problems with not getting the names and such changed properly.

    Jim,

I am about to create one from scratch, so I would do this via the places dashboard still? - I read that is what is still used to manage the old-places/new-local listings, but was unsure on which to use for creating from scratch >> the business page ( www.google.com/+/business/ ) or the places dashboard ( http://www.google.com/places/ ) ?

Use the Places Dashboard to create a new Google+ Local page.

I just came across something I haven't seen yet. After clicking "view" listing from within my account I got a 404 message with the broken robot.

    Has anybody else experienced this?

Is this a Google+ Local transition error?

Is this a new type of "Currently Does Not Support Location"?

    Thanks!!

I'm literally going round in circles working this out!  I have a google + business page I made when it was just google places, I now have a google local page...should it not be linked to my business page?  Will they be merged at some point?
Also this change...could it account for me completely disappearing from searches for photographer in my town?  I used to be first!   I can still be found if you google my name in maps.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 6/11/12 12:25 PM
No way to merge the 2 yet. It's coming but no indication of ETA yet.

This update did not DIRECTLY affect the ranking algo. But the algo is always changing and lots of other stuff could have happened that affected your ranking.
If you have violations, you could have just been hit with a ranking penalty OR your competitors just got busy and leapfrogged you OR any number of other things changed.
I've checked lots of rankings and most have held pretty steady. Although I just read some reports from local pros saying rankings have just gotten a little wonky today.

If you want to discuss your ranking, please start a new thread and we'll see if we can help figure it out or give any tips.

Our SEO is good - we have twitter, facebook, blogs etc but we STILL do not show up in a search. This is a nightmare. If you type Hunters estate agents St Leonards you will see our place page. However if you type estate agents St Leonards we do not show up. Something is wrong. Can you help?

Thanks, Linda.  This is exactly where my confusion lies, I'm glad you finally identified it!  Now my question is this:  I created BOTH a Google+ Page, and then a Local Google+ listing right before the Places changed to Local.  What I think I want to do now is to DELETE the Google+ Page and leave the Local Google+ listing so that it can properly merge with the Places/Local Google+ listing when that happens.  My problem is, when I look at all of the pages I manage, and I see the 2 listings, I can't tell which one is the "Local" page and which one is the "Business" page?!  Can you help with that?

    Thanks!

In regards to this previous post:
    5. I've verified my Places listing already. Why doesn't the checkmark show on this new local Google+ page?
We did not port the verification checkmarks over to this new local Google+ page. Your verified status hasn't changed, though — you can still manage this listing via the Places dashboard. We're working on getting those check marks on there, please sit tight.

May have found a workaround technique for this issue... See the attached image.

Pull up a Google+ listing that you would want to claim

In the listing, click edit details or edit business details

    Click edit your page

Log in with your Google+ account and if the listing is already claimed under another account or if it hasn’t been verified by phone or mail it should give you this error message:  This Listing Is Unavailable You may only access listings that you own. If you created this listing with a different Google Account, please log in to that account and try again. If you've deleted this listing, you may create it again in Google Places. If it lets you edit the listing, then it must not be claimed.

    Linda,

    Just to clarify:

    1.  Google + Local is now the map listing, where reviews reside, and is indexed in Google Search
    2.  Google + for Business Page is the Social Circle Site where a business can engage with their clients, vendors, staff

How is it best suggested to setup these to spaces within Google to maintain consistency with the business brand and link the two to one another?
For example can they even be linked?

When searching Google +, which I am guessing is happening fairly rarely at this point will the Google + Local Page be referenced at all?

Can the score or reviews be linked to the Google + business page?  When will this be integrated so the business can manage one listing and also be social?

Any additional advice on the proper management of these two would be most appreciated.

    Thanks!
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Buquet ~ 6/15/12 4:28 PM
Yep you have 1 and 2 correct.

My recommendation if you DON'T have a Google + page yet, just wait and let Google upgrade your Place page/G+ Local page

If you already have both, nothing to do now. When Google is ready to start the merge, she'll let you know the options.

There is an early merge request form. ONLY for retail locations (no service area businesses.)  IF you like being on the bleeding edge, testing beta products and are dying to test it out you could apply.
To the average business person that is not really that tech savvy or into social yet, I say wait til it's ready for primetime.

"Can the score or reviews be linked to the Google + business page?  When will this be integrated so the business can manage one listing and also be social?"
    No ETA yet.

"Any additional advice on the proper management of these two would be most appreciated."
For now just continue to manage separately as you have been. Nothing you need to do until Google provides options for merging or upgrading to the new system.

If you missed Vanessa's FAQ it has most details you need to know right now. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/business/oRvAQC_IakA

I own a private clinic, who offer treatments

We have clients who leave feedback for us on Google places and would like to remain anonymous due to the nature of the treatments.

NOW THEY CANNOT LEAVE A REVIEW BECAUSE IT WILL LINK TO THERE PROFILE! AND THAT'S EVEN IF THEY HAVE A GOOGLE+ ACCOUNT.

It was complicated enough before you mess about to post a review now the user has to create a profile on GOOGLE+ which they didn't even want to do!

YOU ARE GOING TO RUIN MY BUSINESS!

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO MESS WITH STUFF ALL THE TIME!

@vanessagene - Thanks for the reply. Ive read through the FAQ (great info btw). However again my concern is this...I created my Google Places page several years ago when I started my business, and did so using my personal G-Mail account. Also, once Google + came out I created a personal Google + page with the same gmail address. So...now I think it would be wise that I create a Google+ page for my business...however I suspect I would have to do so using a different gmail account and as such am not sure how I would like the Google places page created with my personal gmail account to a Google + page created with a different email/gmail account. Does that make sense?

I can't figure out the best place to do this, but FYI these changes have caused me to stop using Google Maps for my restaurant reviewing.  Previous to these changes, Google's reviews had less details and less quantity, but the ease of use and the low level of obtrusiveness of the site made it my favorite by far.  Now, by requiring a Google+ account, it has lost that advantage for me.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Flash (RER) 7/2/12 9:57 AM
The advantage is to the people using the map, who are the customers for Maps.  They can rely on the review quality more, which is what they want.  If you choose not to participate, that is fine, but be aware that your potential customers will continue to use Maps to decide where they are going to eat.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Scrubss 7/9/12 8:34 AM
@jjgrosso - You can actually create a Google+ Business Page from your personal Google+ Profile.  On the left-hand menu, there should be a "More" section at the bottom that if you hover your mouse cursor over will open up to show a "Pages" option.  From there you can create your Business Page, and if you use the "Local Business or Place" option, you can migrate much of the basic information from your Google+ Local/Places listing.  The advantage is that you'll be able to manage both your personal Profile, your Business Page, and your Google+ Local/Places listing all from the same Google Account.

I've been desperately searching for an answer to this problem and I can't seem to find a definitive answer on any post! I used to link the business place page with a QR Code so that when customers scanned the code (with their smart phone), it would take them to a place to review on the Google Page. Currently the URLs for the new Google+ Places, when scanned with a mobile phone using a QR code, will take me to an older looking version of the place page with no option or place to write a review! Is it still possible to link the places listing with a QR Code so that individuals can write reviews with their mobile devices? Please help!! Thanks!
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Jade W. 7/9/12 4:44 PM
@bewidget - The only reliable way to review on mobile is through the Google+ or Google Maps app on Android, or Google+ Local app on iOS.

I see the last post here was July 9th. If I should be on more updated forum on this topic now please let me know. I have spent time reading the FAQ and looking at another local announcement forum and this seemed more robust.

    My questions:
I have put reviews on Zagat for years. When I recently posted a review for a local google plus account it found my google places reviews but not my Zagat account. How can I merge these now? (not answered in the FAQ's for Zagat)

Your examples have been restaurants which certainly are all about local search. I imagine this is OK for hotels. What about a business that has a local physical address but doesn't serve food. This will still fit in the Zagat system?

My clients were just recently moved from Google Places (might have come late to Kauai) to Google+ Local. I see that this should now be used for their Google+ Biz Page. (We had not yet set up a Business page). But first they have to claim the page. They have personal Google+ pages so it should be straight forward.

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Sherman 7/25/12 2:48 PM
I went to Zagat.com signed in with Google+ and authorized them to link the accounts. Done.

If someone has a second physical location, how do they need to set that up? Can they both be connected to the same personal GooglePlus account or is a second personal GooglePlus account needed?

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Sherman 7/27/12 2:04 AM
I have a website client that has a fairly well developed Google Places page that Google has now converted to a Local Page.

He now has a personal Google Plus page. And he wants to be able to use the "manage this page" option on the Google Plus Local page.

The Google Plus Local page is:

    This is the link:

    https://plus.google.com/u/0/102019673399002771255/about

The Google Places link was the following which now redirects to Google Plus

    http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=9276238600437481718

The instructions when you click on Manage this Page (signed into his personal GooglePlus) - say that Google should be able to recognize the site if you put in your business phone number. The phone number is written correct on the Google Plus page but we are getting a message that says: "No address found for a business using (808) 742-8884. Add your information below.

I don't want to do that because it will create confusion to create a duplicate map for an existing map.

I see that you have said here to create a business page from the personal google plus page but I am afraid I will run into the same issue - and then I will have set up an unconnected google plus business page. What do you advise?

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here JustLegalServices 7/27/12 2:22 AM
    Dear Google,

I appreciate this intro post, but it was very hard to find it.  There is nothing here  http://www.google.com/places/   or here   http://support.google.com/places/  to suggest that Google decided to merge Places with Plus.

Why would you generate new google Plus pages when many businesses already have their own Google Plus Page.  Why not wait until it's possible for Business Owners to specify whether they already have a Google Plus page or not before transferring the platform?  There doesn't seem to be any cohesion between Google Plus and existing Google products.  It's still not possible to merge your Youtube or Picasa accounts with your Plus Page.

Also, why did you strip all the info that was originally on the Places page? I want all my business hours listed, not just the day a user is searching.  What if they are traveling and need to plan ahead?!

I guess there's no going back now, but why not get user's feedback before rolling out a huge change like this?  Why not wait until all features are in place?  I feel this has been detrimental to Google in these past years.  They introduce new concepts without considering it's usefulness alongside existing products.  The reception ends up being lukewarm because no one wants to recreate years of activity on a separate platform.  At that point it's hard to implement the features that should have been incorporated in the first place, and they end up scrapping the project all together because users have been turned off.

In short, I wouldn't place so much emphasis on Google Plus as I would on the Business and Web Searching Apps and infrastructure that really give Google it's edge over any social network.

    Thank you.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here treebles 7/27/12 6:34 AM
    Linda,
I do not understand what you are asking.
Does you client wants to change the Google account used to manage his/hers Local listing?
If that is the case, then it is not possible, nothing have changed regarding management of the Local listings.
Your client probably would be better off waiting for the full integration of the Google+ Local listings with Google+ at which point it should be possible to add other Google accounts as administrators of the existing Local listing.

Let me know if I misunderstood your question.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Sherman 7/27/12 12:47 PM
Thank you for your reply Treebles.

So you are saying that we need to figure out what email was used to add photos to the page when it was a Google Place and then we would be able with THAT email to now "manage this page" on Google Plus where it is now.
The fact that we set up a new Google Plus account with a different email to manage it will not work.
I see we can edit the email on the new Google Plus account.
Once that matches then we can use "manage" the Google Plus Local listing and convert it to a Business Page?

Or should we create a Business Page separately and hope Google merges them?

I've seen posts that say they can combined like Scrubbs July 9
"@jjgrosso - You can actually create a Google+ Business Page from your personal Google+ Profile. The advantage is that you'll be able to manage both your personal Profile, your Business Page, and your Google+ Local/Places listing all from the same Google Account."

Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here treebles 7/27/12 2:10 PM
    Linda,
The listing is still in the same Places database, the public information (the Google+ Local listing) resides in the Local database. The information in the Places listing contributes to the Local listing, but is not the only source, there are other sources like third party sources, community edits through Map Maker, reviews, information collected by Google from websites, user contributed content, like pictures, that contribute to what you see on the Google+ Local listing and sometimes one take precedence over the other and sometimes they complement each other.
A business owner can influence the information shown on the Google+ Local listing by edits to the corresponding Places listing through the Places Dashboard. But it is up to the Google clustering algorithms that creates the Local listing in the Local database to decide what information to show from all those sources.

You need to keep "managing" the Google+ Local listing through the Google account's Places Dashboard that was used to create the Places listing because that is still the management interface for the verified listing in the Places database. The second Google account that you created (Google Plus account as you put it) cannot manage at this point the Places listing. Once the migration of the Google+ Local listing to Google+ is complete it should be possible to add other Google accounts to manage the business listing.

The owner of the Places listing is the Google account, a Google account can be associated to a non-Google e-mail address, and you can change the e-mail address associated to the Google account, but you cannot change the Google account that owns the Places listing currently.

Google+ Page businesses, even the ones categorized as Local, are not Local listing in the sense that they are not part of the Local database and as such they cannot be found on Local searches on Google Maps and Local apps.
At this moment only the Google+ Local listings (the ones that you still manage through the Places Dashboard) are part of the Local database.
For those businesses that currently have both, a Google+ Local listing and a Google+ Page for businesses, Google will at some point in the future merge into one Local listing with all the social features of Google+. A very small percentage of business owners with both type of listings volunteered for an early migration to the full Google+ experience, but I have not heard much how the procedure went.
Those businesses with only a Google Places listing (publicly Google+ Local listing) would be upgraded to the full Google+ experience and been able to use the social features of Google+ and being able to add administrators to manage the listing, something that is not possible at the moment with the Places Dashboard.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Sherman 7/27/12 8:08 PM
Treebles .. you are fabulous! Thank you so much for all this detail!

Just tested with another client who has been consistent in setting up his personal Google Plus account with the same Google account as he did his Google Places.

He was able to make edits through the Places Dashboard that reflected on the current Google+ Local listing. He also re-verified his account there. The Manage This Page on the Google+ Local Listing still shows up which makes it look like it hasn't been claimed. He tried clicking on it but it just said the information was 100% complete and there wasn't anywhere to verify again. There was an invitation to post a 160 character post on the Google+ Local listing but when he tried to post it, it was greyed out so that is not actually available to him yet.

He has a nice total score but for some reason the page says no score yet in the bottom left but shows the score in red at the bottom of the Google+ Local listing. Obviously, still glitchy platform.

Do you think we should wait for Google to add social to these local pages or proceed to get started on his Business Page and let it merge later? He is a prolific blogger so I think there is an advantage to get a Google+ Business Page going. Do you have any idea when Google intends to add social to the Google+ local pages for all? I assume they will want to let those Google+ Local listings settle in first.

Thank you again Treebles. If you like, drop me a note on my Google+ so I know who you are. I'd love to connect.

This situation has been resolved for future issues as all reviews on Google now require a GooglePlus account and thus cannot be anonymous. All I could think as I was reading the review is that I had a lawyer like that and I have sympathy for the reviewer. All of us that have been harmed by these kinds of lawyers want to post something under our own names but we know the lawyer will find some way to harm us in return.

I'm sure that the fact that the review is anonymous will be appropriately weighted by the judge. But it can serve as a signal to depose other clients for their feedback.

I would like to know what one CAN post in a Google Local Page review of an attorney one was not happy with that is not defamatory and libellous. I assume a poor rating itself is not. We have very specific proof of inappropriate billing as in the case of your client. I want to say just enough so that people who hire him know to be pro-actively alert to billing behavior. What am I permitted to say?

i only play one on TV.  Defamation is a bit of a complicated legal matter.  It's okay to state an opinion, it is not okay to make a false statement of fact even if you frame it in a manner like, "in my opinion..."

You can hover over one's photo to link to their +Profile.
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Josh Closser 12/29/12 10:04 AM
In addition to hovering over the photo - You can view the google plus profile from here; click the down arrow next to post reply, then click show activity - a new page opens and you click view full profile, this links to your google plus profile. The show activity links to your groups profile.

    :)
Re: Google+ Local: Learn more here Linda Sherman 12/29/12 10:28 AM
Thank you Keenan and Josh! That pull down on the arrow is a great tip. Now I see where the edit is. duh. The hovering is spotty for me on Chrome on Mac OSX. It wasn't working last night, now it is - but the important thing is that now I know it is there.

The Stanley Gelman review sounds like facts not opinions to me. In my case, our lawyer charged us $3,000 to make a $3,000 donation from the estate to a university requested by my aunt in her will. That was just one of many questionable charges he billed but it's my favorite. Hi Vanessa,

Just wondering about the link to get signed up for the beta testing.. We were interested in signing up but the link directs me to the main Google+ Local Help page?

    Thanks!
    Sarah
