Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Jade W. 1/29/13 11:09 AM
We’ve made some updates to the verification and editing experience for users managing pages in Google+ (in the Local Business or Place category). Take a look by visiting the page for your business, navigating to the About tab, and clicking Edit Business Information.

What’s new?

- better status updates that tell business owners if their edits are pending or rejected

- progress bar to help business owners fill out the most essential information

- can now add categories via Google+

- updated look and feel (tell us what you think!)

Turnaround time for quality checks on edits will remain the same but we're working hard to improve this experience as well. We hope you enjoy the new business information editing experience in Google+!

Thanks,
Jade

Now that's a nice announcement Jade! What's vexing to me is that I can view my G+ local via places dashboard but can only access the page using inserting the /b routine https://plus.google.com/b/108551944763097404467/ but still get a 500 error trying to Switch to Page I am able to view the live listing in Places Dashboard and view the impression and activity graphs, but still can't edit/post to the page for a few weeks now? A Maps search still ranks me at the top for Social SEO + Video SEO in Los Angeles but that's about it.

Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ ehg 1/29/13 12:26 PM
Me too Jade.
My congratulaiion.
Would you please give the public some information about the supported countries for the good news in case there are not yet all countries supported for the new interface?
Thank you

Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Jade W. 1/29/13 12:27 PM
@Neil Ferree, you should not be managing the page for your business in Google+. The social pages managed in Google+ does not support service-area businesses. You should delete the page in Google+ and then manage the page for your business via Google Places for Business. This is the link for the page for your business (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Social+Media+Marketing+Plus&hl=en&cid=4141143819588632712&gl=US&t=h&z=16&iwloc=A).
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ a11c 1/29/13 12:36 PM
@Jade,

Do you know if custom categories i.e "Criminal Defense Attorney" will be supported again? Currently, only preset categories can be used, which appears to be even more limited than it was previously.
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Jade W. 1/29/13 12:39 PM
@ehg, thanks! This update should affect all countries where Google+ is available for managing local pages.
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Jade W. 1/29/13 12:53 PM
@a11c, correct, only the pre-existing categories may be used.

Great news, Jade!  Glad to see the updated information on the Help Center, too (http://support.google.com/plus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1727176&topic=2625915&ctx=topic).  This might be a question for a different thread, but regarding the Help Center information, we were wondering if it's still best to report a business that has moved locations as closed, or if it's safe to just change the address using the new Plus dashboard (if that's where it's already being managed).
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ AutoRevo 1/29/13 1:41 PM
Jade, that's awesome news...

Question though - we have an un-merged + Business page that we've been using for quite a while - never had any problems before. I go to log in today to post an update, and there's a message that says "Google has sent a PIN to you - you must be verified before your edits appear in Google" - and then when when I click "edit", everything is locked and there's a message at the top that says "your listing is disabled and won't appear in Google"

the "why" link takes you to Places guidelines (none of which were broken) - but this is non-merged Business page, so that shouldn't matter anyway...?  I'm really confused here, any idea what's going on? We've been using our page for over a year and never had problems before... AND we were already verified...

What I can't wait for is to see Places die for good and every thing be on G+.

All in good time I am sure as more and more local peeps are going G+.

Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Jade W. 1/29/13 3:21 PM
@AutoRevo, unverified pages do not show up in Google Maps (same as before today). Link to the page you mention?
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ AutoRevo 1/29/13 7:01 PM
@Jade

the page is https://plus.google.com/u/0/111656652141598163752/posts - but it's always been just a business page - look like for some reason, it's suddenly been merged into our + local page.

Got this reply from Nathan on December 22nd:
Thank you for contacting Google. After investigating your problem, we've found that it is being caused by a technical issue and we are pursuing a resolution. At this time, we cannot say when the issue will be resolved and when you will see your reported problem fixed.

Assumed at the time that we wouldn't be able to merge... I'm guessing maybe they merged it anyway, even though we haven't requested it?

Not as worried about not showing up in Maps as I am about not being able to edit our About tab...

Thanks for your help, Jade - you're my Google hero!

@Jade Thanks for the information. I have a verification question related to the failed merge of my social Google+ Local page and former Places page. I posted it as a reply to your latest posting to this thread: http://goo.gl/3R1O0

@AutoRevo - please start a new thread if you have not done so already.
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Shannon Grady 1/30/13 8:23 AM
I work for Everyday Health - we're a Google Engage Agency, so we have plenty of resources for Adwords, but no one to talk to about Google+ Local. We help a lot of our clients claim and update their pages, but there are some pretty specific situations we run into - like running multiple businesses out of the same location, or running the same business out of multiple locations - that cause some headaches. We're pretty knowledgeable when it comes to Google products, but who can we talk to when we get questions we can't answer or problems we can't solve with Google+ Local?

I can be more specific, but I'm not sure this thread is the place to do it. Thanks, Jade!

Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Jade W. 1/30/13 8:26 AM
@AutoRevo, as this issue seems to be unrelated to the new interface, please post a new thread in the future. I don't have much to add beyond what Nathan said -- the support team will get back to you when there's an available solution.

@Sombrero Peak, I remember the page. I'll go back to the other thread to respond, since it's unrelated to this update.
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Jade W. 1/30/13 8:26 AM
@Shannon Grady, please start a new thread to discuss issues unrelated to this specific update.
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Neil Ferree 1/30/13 10:48 AM
Jade, Sorry, I'm still unclear? I'd like to follow you advice, but not able to delete the G+ page since I can't "switch to page" to delete it. When I search maps for video seo los angeles and click view more it takes me to my G+ business page that I cannot delete? Is the another path to finding the delete page button for this profile/listing without corrupting my Google Maps listing?

My category is as stated: Child Visitation Monitor or Supervised Visitation Monitor?  Why won't the program accept it as is?

Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ ehg 2/3/13 2:10 PM
it doesn't accept both categories in the Goolge+ local editing page because none of both are listed as default categories in the old PlaceDashboard.

I'm having trouble getting my Google+ Page (https://plus.google.com/106002551341535877861/) reinstated even after receiving an email on 1/23/13 that stated:
"Hello,

We have reviewed your request and have determined that your Google+ Local page is in compliance with our Google Places Quality guidelines and Google+ User Content and Conduct policies. The suspension of your page has been lifted and the listing will be live on Google Maps within the next few days.

If you have any further questions please consult the Google+ Help Center.

Thanks,

Google+ Support Team"

I am pretty sure I know what the issue is but my hands are tied on fixing it. I believe it's do to a mix up in the address. I've fixed this within Local, but my listing is still pending and I am unable to edit the address show on the Google+ page via your directions above. When I attempt to everything is locked so I can't update the address of the business. Could you please advise?

Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ racebum 2/6/13 10:31 AM
there any potential chance we could hear something official on the hundreds or thousands of businesses that have been yanked off places for the service business hidden address fiasco? this is turning into an almost daily topic of discussion with local business owners that are stuck in this ongoing pending review state. i'm personally at two months and waiting.
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ jim.jaggers 2/6/13 12:18 PM
There is this thread, which was originally posted when the problem was new and updated a few times since

https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/business/SffU131-xg0

And, of course, the paragraph in the Google Places Quality Guidelines that states

If you don't conduct face-to-face business at your location, you must select "Yes, this business serves customers at their locations" under the "Service Areas and Location Settings" section of your dashboard, and then select the "Do not show my business address on my Maps listing" option.

What else are you looking for?
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ racebum 2/6/13 1:01 PM
basically an update to that link you posted.

what working on it means, what we can expect. a rough idea of how long things take {i think this may have just been answered for me about 30 minutes ago but i'm not 100% yet}. maybe a little brainstorming on how to prevent this in the future. i just can't help but think of the number of man hours that could have been saved if a once or twice a year email blast was sent to all emails listed in google places with rule change updates. if even 30% of SBA's read that and hid their address on their own versus the hard way of having to reinstate, how much time could have been saved for the google employee that has to bring the listing back and all of the contributors that have to answer questions.

i guess in one word, what i'm looking for is progress

Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Linda Buquet ~ 2/8/13 11:04 AM
racebum I TOTALLY get your frustration and sympathize!

However this post is about an important new update on the G+ side.
So I ask that we not take it off-topic.

A new thread with appropriate subject would be a better place for this discussion.
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Doktor Dan 2/9/13 8:11 AM
That is no true. The Google+ does support SABs as long as the customers make contact with their business staff face-to-face (based on the current rules and regulations posted). Also there different categories such as for example "webdesinger" vs "computer store". According to those categories each business gets validated or rejected...if your business has already been validated then you are fine. If google has validated a business in error, then get your lawyer asap.

Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Nick the Plumber 2/10/13 9:08 AM
Will making edits cause our listing to go down as in the past.  Also can Google be more specific on "Categories"  more specifically we are now listed as Plumber, which is singular and what I am, however I am a business owner and licensed with the State as a Plumbing Company and a Plumbing Contractor.  I employ Plumber(s).  In addition to being listed as a Plumber (singular) we are now listed as Mechanical Contractors.  If I remove that and make these chages will my listing go down during the edit process???

Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Nick the Plumber 2/10/13 9:18 AM
@Jade
What can be done to correct pre-existing categories.  We are stuck in a category of Plumber which is an occupation and singular.  We are licensed with the state as a Plumbing Company and as a Plumbing Contractor.  I am a journeyman Plumber and employ Plumbers.  I like the changes but don't like being put in a box that doesn't reflect our business accurately.
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Linda Buquet ~ 2/10/13 9:23 AM
Hi Nick, please start a new thread and post all your details so we can help you.
You have a variety of issues and a serious problem and you DO have additional categories they are just hidden but still work.

BUT this thread is about an important update and I don't want to throw it off-topic with your issue, which is about other topics and will require a bunch of back and forth to help you.

Thanks, Linda
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Nick the Plumber 2/10/13 9:55 AM
I will. Thank you Linda, I do see the other categories (not all correct) on Maps but they are not on my Google+Page.  After all we have been through I am affraid to make changes or correct what is there.
thanks.
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Linda Buquet ~ 2/10/13 11:37 AM
No they're there, will explain in the new thread. (But getting ready to leave for the day, so someone else might explain or I'll try to get back here late tonight if I can.)
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Nick the Plumber 2/10/13 11:46 AM
Thanks Linda.  However I did create a new discussion as you suggested which further details this issue that started last May when our listing was lost during the Local+ conversion.

Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Jennifer Bohmann 2/11/13 11:23 AM
We are having extreme difficulty with our clients pages and verification issues and cannot get help or answers.  Our clients live outside the US and are not getting pin cards.  Address listed on the google plus page differs from what is listed, resenting isn't working since they don't receive the postcards, and we cannot list the US address as a manager so we can get the cards sent to us.  Not to mention we can't get the pins emailed.  We are desparately trying to make this work for our clients but are spinning our wheels.  They lack the understanding that google plus pages don't work as easy as Facebook so we are losing integrity with our client base over this issue.  Do we abandon google or can we actually get help and things working as they shoul be?
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Gerbers Law 2/12/13 1:37 PM
What about businesses, such as mine, that can only access the old Google Places dashboard? None of the new photos or "status updates" that I have posted in the last four months appear on our Google + Local Page.

How can I get this fixed?

Google Help is no longer responding.

Here is our Google+ Local Page: https://plus.google.com/105289042617788633530/about?gl=US&hl=en-US

Here is the dashboard we see: https://www.google.com/local/add/analytics?storeid=492940853474885090&hl=en-US&gl=US
Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ Linda Buquet ~ 2/12/13 4:09 PM
Gerbers Law - hey I grew up in GB, you just made me home sick.

Please start a new thread as this one is about a NEW G+ feature and your issue is about the pure Places type of listing.
(But one tip I can give you is status update has not worked for months. The feature was discontinued they just forgot to tell you in the dashboard.)
Answer Qs it will ask in the new thread and we will help you there.

Jennifer, same for you. Please start a new thread as you have problems and need support. This thread is only for discussion about this particular new feature, unrelated to verification problems.

Thanks, trying to keep things organized and in the right spot to better help all.

Should I *not* be using G+ to manage our business either since we are a service area company as well as an online store?
I am also curious about a listing for Home Services, any ideas?

Thanks for the help Jade!

Re: Update to Local Business/Place Page Management in Google+ jim.jaggers 3/27/13 9:22 AM
probably *not*.  But start a new thread if you'd like to discuss things.  Jade responds when she sees a need, not necessarily upon request, and no one is likely to engage you in the midst of this sticky thread.

@Jade,
I recently tried to merge my old Google places listing with another listing that was, I believe, created by Google + page since it is connected to it. Now when I go to my Google places for business account it shows that both listings the old and the new one are not active and are currently pending. Could you please let me know what your suggestions are? How long does that process take?  I would hate to lose all the information from my old Google places listings, i.e. reviews, pics, online reputation etc. if it is not transferred to my new Google places account that is connected with my Google + page.
Thank you
Paul
