I am unable to verify my domain because Webmaster Tools service is "not available" hsndrake 11/18/10 6:21 PM
Domain Name:gordondrake.ca
Edition: Standard
Affected Username/s: all
Issue Description:
I just signed up for my domain name and a few minutes later signed up for Google Apps. When I sign into the Administrator dashboard, I see the button to verify my domain but when I click it, I am told that "this service is not available". When I try to search help, I am told "this service is not available". Basically when I try to do anything while signed in my with Google Apps account username, I am told that "this service is not available". How can I verify my domain name and get Google Apps to work? Should I have waited longer between purchasing the domain name and signing up for Google Apps? Or is there a compatibility issue with .ca domains and Standard Edition that limits the functionality of Google Apps? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm having the same problem with:

Domain Name: dartmoorwoodshop.com
Edition: Standard
Affected Username/s: all

Just signed up and wish to verify - I have complete control over my domain, I just need to know what steps to take. The message "Webmaster Tools service is "not available for dartmoorwoodshop.com" is incredibly unhelpful.

Same problem for me...

I'm having the same problem with my domain greencoffins.net. You think Google apps has a glitch today?

I'm able to login, but when I click on the button to verify my domain, I get this:

"This service is not available

Google Webmaster Tools is not available for greencoffins.net"
Re: I am unable to verify my domain because Webmaster Tools service is "not available" prophecygirl 11/19/10 3:47 AM
What virtualiroquai said. The error message isn't very helpful, they should tell us what to do to fix the problem.

I have the same problem too with domain irbur.com.

Do you have some news about this issue? Do you know if Google is working on it?

Thankyou!

My problem as well.  And I cannot cancel my account to retry.  Is this the only way to ask for help?
Re: I am unable to verify my domain because Webmaster Tools service is "not available" The Webmaster 11/19/10 5:04 AM
Greetings to all....

Contrary to the "Wemaster Tools" jargon in the error, the situation you are describing is the result of an unusual DNS record in the zone file of your domain. More specifically, the dns record for your domain root (the domain name itself without a host name - often represented by "@" in your DNS zone file) is not being properly resolved.  That is, if there is no record for your domain root, or your domain root is a redirect, or it points to localhost (127.0.0.1), or resolves to any similar non-ip number, then it whacks out the Google Apps verification process.

To fix this, edit your DNS to add either an "A" record (with a valid Internet IP address) or a CNAME for the domain root. The entry will look something like this:

@     IN A     221.48.64.3

Or this:

@     IN CNAME     www

Once that record has entered and settled for a few minutes, try to verify your domain in Google Apps again and you should be on your way!

Note that if you use a CNAME for the domain root it can cause problems for email delivery, so you'll probably want change it after you get verified. If you plan to use Google Sites for your www website (make sure you complete domain mapping in the site's General Settings area), you'll probably want to point the domain root to your www site. In that case, most domain name registrars have a redirect option in each domain's DNS control panel. While such a redirect may cause a "Wemaster Tools" error during verification, there is no problem if you use the redirect after verification.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply - I have made the necessary changes, in fact it turns out my host as a "1-click" option to make the changes needed for Google Apps. Any luck I can verify soon. However you need to really update your error messages, as this was in no way clear what I needed to do.
Re: I am unable to verify my domain because Webmaster Tools service is "not available" virtualiroquai 11/19/10 5:59 AM
Actually though - my A record was correct anyway, so I still don't see why this doesn't work.

ASNoe: Thanks! I made the DNS changes. I hope this works. *crosses fingers*

Thank you ASNoe for your reply.
My domain was configured as shown in your post, but I continue to get the same error. Now it is verified but I cannot activate the google apps because I get the error shown before.
Could you help us again? The domain name is irbur.com.

Thank you!

Thanks ASNoe! My domain has now been verified :)

Glad you got yours working prophecygirl!

Unfortunately my domain dartmoorwoodshop.com is still not working - I'm sure all the settings are correct. Anyone have any other ideas?
Re: I am unable to verify my domain because Webmaster Tools service is "not available" ohadios 11/19/10 8:40 AM
Having the same problem with my domain.
I've done this plenty of times in the past but this seems to be associated with the switch to the new Google users mode.
I am certain that my domain settings are correct - but seriously doubt that this even has anything to do with it, since the error shows up before even choosing the method of authentication... I just click "Continue" on the page it says "we can walk you through this process...."
HELP!?
Re: I am unable to verify my domain because Webmaster Tools service is "not available" ohadios 11/19/10 8:49 AM
Still cannot do it - but I found another way around it!
I clicked the "Email" service which takes me to the "Email Settings" page.
Scroll down to the section where it says "Email Activation" and click the link for "Instruction on how to verify this domain".
I was then able to create the CNAME and verify my ownership!
This is obviously some mean bug that resulted from the switch to the new user system....

ohadios, thank you!!! We had the same problem and your solution worked for us as well.
Re: I am unable to verify my domain because Webmaster Tools service is "not available" The Webmaster 11/19/10 11:50 AM
Hello again...

In regards to setting the MX records to those prescribed by Google, I would consider that a coincidence since that was the first thing we tried, which was no help.  Even during the error, we could access all areas of the admin control panel; it was ONLY upon attemped verification that we received the "Webmaster Tools" error.

Also, another time saver (and one of the first things we did) is to set a DNS record as follows:

*     IN CNAME     ghs.google.com.

This will save from having to repeatedly add new CNAMEs for each custom URL, such as docs.mydomain.com, mail.mydomain.com, etc.. Some registrar interfaces have a specific entry for "www" already built into the zone, so you may have to enter that one too:

www     IN CNAME     ghs.google.com.

Either way, you end up with every undeclared host resolving to ghs.google.com.

So, to recap, we configured the MX records as prescribed by Google; we added a wildcard for ghs.google.com, and finally; we added a CNAME for the domain root that pointed to www.

We spent several hours on this issue before resolving it with the process above. Because we were able to control our DNS cache, it went fairly quickly when we made the last change (as I mentioned in the post above).  However, if you do not have your own DNS server your DNS may have a long TTL (time to live) set in the record and no way for you to change it. In that case, DNS could take up to hours to refresh with the new information for the domain root.

Best of luck!

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that we're currently investigating this and I'll update this thread as soon as I have additional information.

Thanks,
Jolly

Thanks Jolly,  add "marchlaw.com" to the list that is not working.

I confirmed my  @  A record (per ASNoe's suggest) is fine, so that's not it.  DNS registrar and management is through Network Solutions.

KonaKen - try my suggestion a few posts up. So far it has worked for several others...
Re: I am unable to verify my domain because Webmaster Tools service is "not available" KonaKen 11/19/10 12:11 PM
ohadios - thanks, I saw that suggestion in the other thread on the subject -  where I first replied.  Not an option for me - this domain is already active for E-mail.  E-mail transition has to be the LAST step I do, after getting all the infrastructure in place for the users so it is as smooth as humanly possible.
Re: I am unable to verify my domain because Webmaster Tools service is "not available" KonaKen 11/19/10 12:24 PM
Whoops! - Mahalo ohadios!

I did not actually have to change my MX's.  After about 5 minutes of the verification button still giving me this message after I clicked the activate E-mail (and lied about having changed my MX's and clicked the I have done it button), I got into verification.  The first time in failed to the same message, but the second time, I got the option of HTML or CNAME (what happened to TXT record?  That's what I wanted to use).

Still waiting for the verification to finish, but this is a step forward from where I was this morning.

I am having the same problem.

When I am signed in with my "administrator" account for shething.com, I get the message

"this service is not available

I would like to verify my domain by altering the CNAME records. Is this option not available any longer?

I do not have the option for the TXT, cannot upload an HTML file and do not have access  to the body tags.

My website is on WIX.com and currently this is where my domain is being hosted.

I'd like to change to CNAME records (like I've done in the past) to verify my account.

Please let me know how I may find instructions on how to do so.
Re: I am unable to verify my domain because Webmaster Tools service is "not available" tonztime 12/21/10 2:28 PM
TNT-S if you go to cpanel, domain settings, general, you should see an option to use Current version of next generation version of the control panel. Make sure Current version is selected and you should be able to create CNAME instead of TXT. It worked for me.
This message has been hidden because it was flagged for abuse.

Hi, how about if I want to use TXT?
Re: I am unable to verify my domain because Webmaster Tools service is "not available" 6colourhexagon 1/7/11 1:17 AM
Hi there, also wanting to use TXT - mid December I was allowed the option - only this week did the DNS txt record: Went into google apps and could not find the option for txt verification - so can't click the verify button.
Have tried both versions of the Control panel, still only cname and html file upload available. As i don't have access to the DNS settings for the domain (have to request changes from a third party) using the CNAME verification instead is tricky

Exactly the same issue, I have signed up yesterday and I thought I will complete the process today, so far I have challenged the MX records and I can't verify or access the Google Services, as it state: "The service is not available", I can't even login into admin control panel to verify the ownership of domain name.
