Does not like recipient - 550-5.1.1 - e-mails bouncing back! Gav-P 6/25/09 5:53 AM
Am getting a lot of bounce backs to my email account.

Some people can send me e-mails fine - however most people are getting this bounce back:

<tbs...@gavinpearce.com>:
209.85.219.5 does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 550-5.1.1 The email account that you tried to reach does not exist. Please try
550-5.1.1 double-checking the recipient's email address for typos or
550-5.1.1 unnecessary spaces. Learn more at
550 5.1.1 http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=6596 5si3563403ewy.100

The e-mail account is correct, is typed correct, and I can send and receive e-mail on it fine myself.
Most other people have the problem (but not all).2009-06-25

To confirm that the account really does work sometimes, I connected via TELNET to the main server:

220 mx.google.com ESMTP g1si9639173muf.56

However some people still get that bounce from Google!!! Any ideas? Am at a loss!  =(

Anyone?

I'm also getting this error - in particular, I'm subscribed to a mailing list, and nothing in the mailing list, subscription or google apps settings has changed in months - however some mails do come through, and some get this error. With the same sender and same recipient, sometimes succeeding and sometimes getting the error, maybe this should help narrow down the problem...

From the bounce message attached to the mailing list's warning message (which did arrive ok!):

209.85.216.67 does not like recipient.

we're losing precious emails here!
Re: Does not like recipient - 550-5.1.1 - e-mails bouncing back! ScienceMan 7/15/09 6:34 AM
@Gay-P (original poster): your MX and SPF records look OK; all I can see that looks out of the ordinary is that you do not have a web mapping for your mail sub-domain consistent with your Google Apps use.  At present, your mail sub-domain is pointed by CNAME to your bare domain name.  Check that you do not have CNAME wildcards set that might be interfering with proper DNS lookup for the sub-domains.

@drab: Your SPF records are not set, see below.  The web mapping for our mail sub-domain looks OK.

Neiher of these problems should lead to the errors you are seeing, but are worth checking and fixing before you go on.  I'll flag this for someone at Google to look at to see if I missed anything, but this does not guarantee a response.

@amichair: Please provide your domain name and/or check DNS settings as per the references below.

Thanks ScienceMan, but for now I've moved away from google mail, I hope it turns out better next time around :-)

Hi
MY problem is similar in that my address is being rejected when people try to email me but the reason is that it appears that google is changing my domain and referring me to the wrong mail server for validation. My domain is echotrack.co.za and when email is sent to myn...@echotrack.co.za it somehow changes to myn...@echotrack.com and is summarily bounced for not existing. We use IMAP to access our accounts and this started happening after changing from POP to IMAP. Here is the response that is received by my colleagues:
-----Original Message-----

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

Hi

I am using Google apps for my domain easemerchandising.com . I have checked the settings for MX records and all teh MX records are as per Google Help and no other MX record exists. I also add the SPF record but still facing the same issue. Their are few emails that are getting delivered to my email and few are bouncing back to senders which they again send me at my Gmail id. I have gone through the above posts and checked my settings well as made changes but still the seems like teh problem exists. Few mail are getting delivered to my inbox rest are bouncing back.

I am having the same issues. I am amazed that I see no Google Employee replies in this thread. Is there nothing that can be done about this? The domain is citrobio.com. If there is anyone monitoring this thread, this is causing a major problem.
Re: Does not like recipient - 550-5.1.1 - e-mails bouncing back! Kingboyk 5/24/10 7:56 AM
From my testing it seems to me that if you added the email address by clicking "Add an email address I already own" (or words to that affect) Google won't accept email to that address directly, you have to forward it to the GMail address. This doesn't help the OP but may be the case for some of the posters.

I added some accounts this way and then wanted to point the MX at Google but it doesn't work.
Re: Does not like recipient - 550-5.1.1 - e-mails bouncing back! Nikolaj 8/3/10 2:57 AM
I had this problem when people posted from a Yahoo account to my Google Apps account.

It turned out to be DNS related:

I had this CNAME record for my domain:

@     ghs.google.com.

I removed this and now it works.
