Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key Funso 6/10/09 5:59 AM
Not sure if I'm being thick here, but the instructions for creating the registry key to point clients to the location of the GAL appear to be incorrect.

"Create the following Windows registry key on each user's computer to point to the domain folder (either on the file share or on each user's computer): HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Apps Sync\GAL\<domain>\<full path to folder>"

You can't have slashes in a registry key name. Any ideas?

I am also a little confused as I've tried several combinations of keys/strings and so far nothing works.

There definitely seems to be some kind of mistake there. Hopefully someone will be able to clarify the issue. I'll also post if I manage to get it working.

Is this a string (REG_SZ) value, rather than a key.

<start of reg file contents>

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Apps Sync\GAL]
"<your domain here>"="c:\domainfile.gal"

<end of reg file contents>

I love sysinternals.com registry monitor

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Apps Sync\GAL\<your domain here>]
then create a string value here:
"Folder"="\\myserver\GAL folder"  or "Folder"="c:\folder"

you need to point to the folder where the {2E33BE2B ect...} folder and the file current_gal_directory is located. Not directly to a file.

Nice work. Now to get the GA help article updated. TC's?

I'll flag this for an Advisor.  Good work, guys.

AppsTester, you are my IT hero.  Just to clarify, it looks like that value you mentioned needs to be in the string name, not the string data.
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key Funso 6/10/09 11:47 AM
Good job, AppsTester. Looks like the GA help article has been updated as well!

Create a new registry key

   1. Create the following Windows registry key on each user's computer to point to the domain folder (either on the file share or on each user's computer): HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Apps Sync\GAL\< your domain>
   2. Right-click < your domain>, then click New > String value.
   3. Enter Folder for the value name, then press Enter.
   4. Right-click Folder, then click Modify.
   5. Under Value data, enter either: \\<file share>\<path to shared domain folder> or <drive>\<path to local domain folder>
For example: \\file share\domain folder or C:\domain folder

FYI, The help article has been updated to reflect this.

Does the global address list populate immediately in outlook when the settings are correct?

I've run the program, created the registry entry, and launched outlook.  After a few hours, the GAL is still empty.  I've verified with regmon that it's reading the key correctly.
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key Rob Ardill 6/19/09 11:43 PM
I've been telling users wait 24 hours, as that was the default Outlook waits in an Exchange environment.
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key Magister52 6/21/09 6:39 PM
I've waited a few days, still nothing.

My static_gal_users_1.enc is only 37kb.  This seems extremely small, even in a 150 user environment.  Shared contacts work fine on the web client.  I wonder if the GAL isn't generating correctly.
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key Magister52 6/23/09 5:26 AM
I've figured out the problem.  I was pointing to the {number} directory instead of the directory that contains those folders.

Now if only groups would appear in the list...

For my registry path, after Google Apps Sync there is no GAL path, what do I do now?
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key jstansberry 7/27/09 11:18 AM
I am using Vista as well
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key kazinvan 12/9/09 4:06 PM
Note, I had to add a trailing slash on the end of my folder to make it work.

Value of the folder key was "\\server\path\"

Outlook 2007 on Win7 in case it matters.

I've tried adding the trailing slash and this still isn't working (see Bl4cKTH0r's link)
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key naozo 1/25/10 8:04 PM
I could successfully see GAL in my Outlook 2007 with following registry setting:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Apps Sync\GAL\mygadomain.com :
REG_SZ : Folder = \\server\\shared\\mygadomain.com
(does not include {hexadeciamal} folder, no trailing slash)
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key bashd 2/9/10 4:51 AM
I am having a very strange experience with this GAL generator.

Even if I copy the files generated to my local PC (C:\mydomain.com) the Global Address book in Outllook remains blank.

Are there any known issues on Windows XP or Vista with Outlook 2003/7?

I was able to implement this on my PC as a test, then the first XP with Outlook 2007 was successful for the customer, however, all other machines, do not display the address book, even after 48hrs+

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any asssitance you can provide.

Silly question. When it says :

2. Right-click < your domain>, then click New > String value.
3. Enter Folder for the value name, then press Enter.

It really means Folder......correct?
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key jetb2 2/11/10 10:39 AM
Premiere account

Now I understand my confusion. I have all of our users showing up in the GAL, but none of the shared contacts. How do I get all of the domain shared contacts (that show up in the gmail interface to show up (sync?) with the GAL generator?
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key jrstpete 2/19/10 8:36 AM
I'm having trouble with setting up the GAL as well - same problems as mentioned above. Is there a reason why the GAL wouldn't be visible immediately in Outlook (assuming the setup was done correctly)?
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key jetb2 2/19/10 8:39 AM
I believe I had to close/open Outlook and wait for a sync for it to appear.
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key eclipseguru 2/24/10 12:22 AM
Note, you can also use paths like %APPDATA%\.... This makes it easier for notebook users. Their GAL will continue to work when they are disconnected.
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key Beacher 2/25/10 1:29 PM
I too am having trouble with the blank GAL in Outlook 2003 after applying my registry key, I've had success with about 90 other users I've converted over. Is there anything we can try to fix this?
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key sherpadave 4/13/10 11:28 AM
Is the static_gal_users_1.enc file supposed to be encrypted or illegible?

Thanks,
Dave

Short piece of advice for people following a translated installation guide:
In my case I used the Dutch version and the registry key "folder" was translate with it (making it "map" in Dutch) so it didn't work.

Some people might experience similar issues with different languages; make sure to use the key "Folder".
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key Rob Ardill 4/21/10 5:40 PM
FYI, a new version of Outlook Sync was just released.

Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key ChadRTK 5/5/10 10:47 AM
Anyone know if this new functionality will be adapted to the BES so I don't have to use the gal generator anymore?
Re: Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook GAL registry key Rob Ardill 5/6/10 7:44 PM
Don't think it's on the horizon. I haven't seen any meantion of it.

Side note. I'm putting in 5 iPhones for every BB since Outlook Sync release. The tides are definitely changing.
