On Goals Funnel Visualization, Top Exit Page Is Same As Starting Page scrispin 3/9/09 8:08 AM
On the funnel visualization for my goals, the top exit page always seems to be the same as the first step page.  Does anyone know why this would be?  For example, 20 of the 43 people that hit page 1 of my request information form (RequestInfo.php) exit to the same page of the form.  Any help is much appreciated, thanks!2009-03-09

What URL are you using for your "Step 1" page? It could be accidently matching more than just the RequestInfo.php by accident, making GA think that every page belongs to "Step 1" when it really doesn't.

If you don't start your Goal Steps with "http://" Google Analytics thinks you are trying to use a regular expression. I suspect that's what is getting everything confused. In your case I would suggest embracing the regular expressions by changing your match type to Regular Expression Match and changing your Goal URL's to

Step 1: ^/RequestInfo\.php$
Step 2: ^/RequestInfo\.php\?page=2
Goal: ^/RequestInfo2\.php$

I too have been looking for info about this problem, and I don't think any of the solutions mentioned above are really what the problem is. I was looking at the instructional video from GA on Youtube, and I see the same scenario as the problem I'm trying to understand:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IibCs23EuiE&fmt=18

Freeze frame at 0:42 and you will see that for step 1, login, one of the top exit pages is: login.html! Same for step 2, place order, placeorder.html is one of the top exit pages. Why is login.html counted as an exit page for login? And if GA counts any missed steps as visited, why is login also an exit page for the step after login, place order?

I really don't get it...

ddc I have exactly the same issue on my funnel reports.  One of the highest exit pages is the same as the existing page.  I don't understand how this can be.  Is it something as simple as a page refresh?

I watched the above youtube video and it does show exactly the issue as stated by ddc.

Any answers, gratefully received!

Yes, if your page refreshes, you can find it as an exit page. For example, your product page may refresh when the user updates any of the selected items or quantity. In which case, it will be shown as an exit to the same page.

We have the same problem.  I think there is a problem with the report.  It is fairly normal on a checkout process to be returned to the same page quite often if a validation error occurs.  The user hasn't exited the funnel if this happens and in fact might well go on to make a sale.  It is interesting to know how many validation errors are occurring on a particular step I just don't think you should call this an exit.  At the moment it's not obvious what the true number of people leaving is.

e.g. the last page on our process before completion is /sponsor/bank

our report shows 239 users entering this step, 33 exiting to /sponsor/bank and 158 completing the process.  66% success.  Maybe the 33 also counted as entering this step so in fact we really have 206 entering and 77% success?  It's really not clear

Would it be better if in fact we didn't call pageTracker._trackPageview() on the second view of this page?

I think this answers only one part of the question. Why for example is my home page appearing as an exit page when it is part of the funnel( answer: because some users refresh the page) however I still don't get why the second step of the funnel would appear as an exit in the first step.

To be clearer if you had home page - basket review in your funnel and then on the 1st step you had basket reviews as one of the exits, then that  doesn't seem to make sense.

If this is caused by page refreshes, shouldn't I find these in the navigation summary as well? Or are page refreshes, that result in leaving the site, all combined under "exit" in the navigation summary report?

Update: this is a known issue that is on the list for being resolved. Apparently, it's also a recent issue.

@Beatever, could you elaborate? What exactly is the known issue? The "top exit page is the same as next page in funnel", or are you talking about something else? Thanks!

Sorry,

The fact that a top exit page on your funnel is actually an page from your funnel.
I got a mail from the technical staff that the issue is known, and hopefully 1 day, will being resolved.

@AnalyticsPro.Chris If a page refreshes why would it show as an exit to that page? Doesn't the funnel visualization report show visits and not pageviews?
Can you clear this up? Does that mean that if I refresh a page in the funnel process, or press the "back" button from it to go to the previous page in the funnel, the report would show an exit to those pages (depending which one I do)?

Let's say I land in the website on step 1, continue to step 2 and press back to go to step 1, then correct something and return to step 2, and continue to step 3. If that was the only activity in the website, would the funnel show (entrance) to step 1, 1 from step1 to step2, 1 from step2 to step3, an exit from step2 to step1 and an entrance from step2 to step1 ?

Hope this is clear...

Old thread, but this is still an issue for me, despite Beatever' s response from april 27 about the techincal staff mail.

I have the same issue too. It looks like a bug in the funnel visualization report.
