Goal Funnel "exit" page same as next page in Goal Funnel! kenalytics 5/4/09 9:15 AM
I'm new to Google Analytics, and I'm hoping someone has insight into this issue.

A percentage of the exit traffic from my goal funnel is going to the page I've identified as the next step in that funnel.  A higher percentage is actually displayed as having continued down the funnel, but some are shown as exits.

ex: 500 --> homepage
50 --> /signup  with 15 exiting to /signup

There are also a significant number of homepage --> homepage, but I imagine there is little that can be done about this (page refresh?).

Any help/insight would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks!

I just noticed that I have the same issue. Anyone have a reason?

I see this behavior as well, and would really like to understand what it actually means.

The solution relies on having proper file extensions in your goal funnel setup.

After a discussion with my web developer, I learned that we are using a mod rewrite on many of our pages, so many file extensions (.php, .html etc) were absent from the page URL by default.  However, what's important is to reproduce the URL exactly as it is linked within your site's designated goal path.  Our "Sign Up Now" button on the homepage was linking to /signup, and the sign-up form submission button links to /sign-em-up.php.  So by including the file extension on the target page, goal conversions began to register and the funnel now works fine.

Let me know if this helps!

A thread on the UK forum also discusses this issue.
If you have a page reload, it will show up as an exit to the same page.  This happens on our signup form - e.g. if someone enters an invalid password, the page reloads with an error message and this shows as an exit from the funnel.

I tried to add a link to that thread but it didn't show up -- here it is:
