|Nexus S: power button not working||SD2k||12/9/11 1:24 AM|
Device: Nexus S
Country / Language: England/English
OS / Browser / build number (if applicable): Android 2.3.6 GRK39F
In the last day or two the power button on my Nexus S has deteriorated rapidly. Two days ago it worked fine; gradually it has stopped responding until now when I press it it fails to turn the screen on at all. If the screen is unlocked it just does nothing.
I've tried removing the battery for 10 minutes but this does nothing. However, when I try to turn the phone on the power button never fails, so it seems not to be a hardware issue, and there's been no physical damage to the phone.
Any help would be appreciated!

I have this same problem. I thought it might be a software problem so I wiped my phone but the power button still does not work. HELP !!
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||RikPat||12/11/11 8:54 PM|
Exact same problem happened to me a few days ago. I contacted Samsung and they said they will fix it but that will involve being phone less for a week or so depending on shipping. In the meantime however I downloaded an app from the app store called "Fix Broken Power". It works very well and will let you put off having to get it fixed for a while. Try it out.
But I still think its ridiculous that the button would stop working! Samsung should know that users press this button at least a hundred or so times and day and it should be a lot more durable than 8 months.

well it happened to me last week and I send it to samsung to fix it. still waiting...
i WAS VERY HAPPY WITH MY PHONE BUT DISAPPOINTED ME

|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||pcespedes88||2/26/12 8:35 AM|
I just got this problem too..... apparently all of us got it in the same period of time. I am dissappointed, and the fix broken power button to make volume key unlock phone doesn't work for me :(
somebody knows about another app?
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||DanW360||2/27/12 4:37 PM|
Mine has just stopped working as well. Can download an app but it's a poor substitute. This seems to have happened to far too many people in a reasonably short space of time for it to be a generic wear and tear hardware fault. Google, get involved and offer a proper solution.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||MarcB-D||3/26/12 2:50 PM|
Happened to me too. Did a factory reset and unrooted, nothing changed. Installed "Fix power button" in the meantime.
Anyone found a solution ?
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||damnsrm||4/9/12 10:38 PM|
This just started happening to me today. The power button became unresponsive after I disabled settings-> developer options -> USB Debugging. Re-enabling the USB Debugging does not fix the problem :(
I also downloaded the turn-on by volume app, but yeah it's not as convenient as the normal method... Anybody else encounter this error after messing with the USB debugging setting? The funny thing is, I was messing with that setting because my phone was not being recognized as a usb storage device by windows when i plugged in the usb.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||damnsrm||4/9/12 10:45 PM|
I was reading some other forum post about this issue and the person said the power button powers if they press it repeatedly. I tried this, and it also "worked" for me: with the phone in standby mode, I pressed the power button repeatedly like 20 times, and it finally woke up. I then long-held the power button, and turned off my phone. Just turned it back on, and it appears the button is working properly now
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Chooch401||4/10/12 6:26 AM|
i have this issue now as well... I updated to 4.0.4 on Thursday and by sunday The power button is completely unresponsive.
I'm unsure wether this is a Hardware or Software issue.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||gilmour.josh||4/11/12 10:38 AM|
Same problem for me. Rapid deterioration over two days. Now it's totally unresponsive except for when I turn the phone on after a battery pull. VERY FRUSTRATING.
And this only happened after I installed OS4.04...
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||alec85||4/12/12 8:13 AM|
hate to be another person joining in with this, but it happened to me after updating to ICS a few days ago as well. Seems to be a problem with the OS rather than the actual button, as if I repeatedly hammer the button I can unlock the screen but can't ever re-lock it (sometimes it offers me the power down screen, but never just locks the phone). Also works if I take the battery out and turn it back on again, but well annoying!
Think i'm gonna send it back to Samsung to repair... Anyone else had any luck?
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||nexussholland||4/16/12 1:45 AM|
Had the update to ICS one week ago and now the powerbutton isn't responding anymore. Samsung said i should send it to them for reparation, could last 2 weeks. Well, i am going to Asia next week for 3 weeks and need my phone. Why can't they make it in 2 days....

Power button just stopped working sometime in the last 4 hours. Hopefully an OS issue. Button still feels right, with the noticeable clicking of switch.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||drewbee||4/18/12 8:21 AM|
Same problem here, except that my sleep button seems to magically engage constantly (as if it has been long-pressed). If I just put the phone down on a table, I can see it going on and off repeatedly. Makes it extremely annoying to use and drains battery.
I don't think it's software related, as I've been on ICS for a few months before the problem started. Also, it's gotten gradually worse, which makes it seem mechanical.
Does anyone know if Samsung charges for the repair (I've had phone for over 1 year) and how long it takes??

How did you unroot because everytime i go to the fastboot loader the phone just crashes.

Same problem here, contacted Samsung Help Service. They say that they are going to fix it (since it is a known problem). Otherwise they will ship it...
My problem: I bought it in the States last year, but I live in the Netherlands... It can be an insurance issue (they say)... Fingers crossed!

I'm a French user of the i9023 and was very happy about it too before my power button stop working.
In this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1596085), it says that it could be a software issue, since it happens with the ICS upgrade, and it was the same for me.
Any help ?

|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||sunfirex||4/27/12 12:14 PM|
I was the one who actually posted this for a buddy.
Oddly enough, I own a Galaxy S1 (Captivate) and ran a custom ROM of 4.0.4 build IMM76D and noticed this issue on my phone as well. The ROM I was running was Doc Master's ICS v10. It happened to me last night.
I've completed flashed the phone to the last version I was using and am still having the same issue. I have a suspicious feeling that the IMM76D build causes the issue. But, since I've reverted back and am still experiencing the same issue, it's either a hardware issue and just coincidental that I experienced the issue on the same build. Or it's a mix of software that creates a hardware malfunction. It's probably not the latter of the two, but who knows.
I've still not figured out a way to resolve my Captivate. It works if I just tap the power button, but it takes me about a minute or so to get it just right to turn the display on. So it's not a total loss at this point. Luckily, enough for me I'm already rooted.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||dijiliu||4/28/12 5:56 AM|
Really please prioritise@Google - same bug here with i9023 at 4.0.4. First time I had this issue around 2 weeks ago but it disappeared. Thought it was related to a new battery pack I bought. Removing and restart with the new pack did not change the error but it disappeared after replacing the original battery again. Now two weeks later the battery pack does not matter any more. Feels like the button is pressed all the time, cause the phone is restarting after replacing the battery immediately. Looking forward to a fix.

Same problem here. I have a Nexus S on a regional carrier. Got the update for 4.0.4. and after a couple of days the Power button no longer works. I downloaded "fix power button" but it is finicky and does not work all the time. Will there be a fix from Google (4.0.5.?) ?
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||RobMoo||4/30/12 12:44 PM|
Another one here - stopped working last night. Been fine for a year and 4 months. Software problem in my opinion - looks like the O/s is loosing priority on the processor threads or something as sometimes it's ok, sometimes it's completely unresponsive.

|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||johandekoning||5/2/12 8:28 AM|
The power button of my phone (Nexus S with 4.0.4) also stopped working today. Rebooting does not fix the problem. Not sure if this is a hard of software problem. If it is software I would expect that rebooting should fix this issue (until it happing again).
Or is there some power button counter active? And should I buy more Power Button credits so I can use it again.
What to do? Wait for a fix or sent it out for repair. Phone is 1 year and 1 month old.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||hczx||5/5/12 3:52 AM|
Got the same issue on my nexus s, 1 year 1 month old - it was working fine and a couple of minutes later the power button stopped responding.
Interestingly though, after I switched off the phone by taking out the battery, I could switch the phone on viathe power button only if the phone was on a charger, else it wouldn't even switch on. Anybody else observed a similar problem?
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||hczx||5/5/12 10:55 PM|
Got it fixed yesterday - turned out to be a hardware issue with the switch that is attached to the circuit board not working. Its seems to be standard part across phones, so those of you with warranty should be able to get it replaced and those without can try getting it fixed from Samsung itself or from a local phone mechanic for a more affordable option.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Jackmib||5/7/12 7:35 PM|
I just had my power button broken also.
It appears to be a Hardware problem from what i read here. I download and have installed the "Fix Broken Power Button". Its working till now really good.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Raoulvm||5/9/12 7:44 AM|
Just talked to the factory who repairs dutch Samsung phones, they said that the PCB (printplaat) is broken.
So it's a known Hardware problem.
My problem: They won't repair it in Europe because it's a US phone...
Screwed by Samsung!
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Phiphish||5/9/12 10:21 AM|
It is possible to root the phone without a working power button? Would the "fix broken power button" work with rooting?
Would a local phone repair be able to fix? Or Samsung USA?
Oh and the power switch does anyone know the part number or possible replacement?
Just try to look a different angles to this problem. Thanks.

I had the Same problem Today, I contacted Nexus s help Centre, And they told me
Please follow the steps mentioned below to perform a soft reset on your Phone.
1. Turn off the handset.
2. Remove the battery and wait for 30 seconds.
3. Reinsert the battery and turn ON the device.
And Tada, Back to normal.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||landi88||5/21/12 8:06 AM|
Questions to all of you having the same problem:
-Do you have the problem since you updated to Android 4.0 / ICS
-Have you developed on your phone or are you a "normal" user?
I have the same problem and have it just since the update. I have developed at the day of the first occurence of this problem.
And the soft reset didn't work for me.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Raoulvm||5/21/12 8:18 AM|
It would be nice if you people would read back what has already been said...
the PCB is broken, a common Nexus S problem.
so no it is NOT a 4.0 bug. The warranty should cover it!
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||landi88||5/21/12 8:33 AM|
I have read back, thx. But it is very strange as i know others than me having the same issue since the update. One bougth the phone at it's selling start, i have it since a year and 3 months and another one has it since 7 months.
And on all this phone the PCB broke in just one or two weeks after the update? Seems very unlikely, right?
And the problem is that two of us don't have the warranty any longer as one year passed.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||TheDeuce||5/24/12 7:33 AM|
My power button failed prior to the ICS update. It is a hardware issue and Samsung (or someone else) needs to replace the power button.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||aparolini||5/25/12 2:41 PM|
For the records:
Had the same issue, then dropped the phone on floor (unwillingly, I swear) and cracked the bottom of the screen. And... the power button start working again !
Don't know whether I should be happy or not.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||RobMoo||5/26/12 3:54 AM|
Right. Downloaded O/s 4.0 in April, phone got it's knickers in a twist when pressing the power button. Sent back to Samsung under warranty, they reinstalled 2.3 as a standard measure and weren't able to diagnose a fault. I've got it back now, works fine, on 2.3. I wont be upgrading to 4.0 would rather not bother.

Thanks God there is Fix My Broken Button app!
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Nez76||6/6/12 1:04 AM|
Ive had the broken power button for a couple of months, absolutely no response, I have worked around it by using a couple of screen lock/unlock apps. I was convinced it was a hardware issue. Today, it has started working perfectly again!
I have dropped it on the floor recently but am not sure if this was the inadvertant fix.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Wolfgang Hendrix||6/11/12 2:54 PM|
A temporary solution for me was to spam the power button until it behaved normally.
I pressed it fast, like 20 times. Afterwards, the button worked for about 2 days and then got even worse. I'm still looking or a long term solution.
The app that changes your volume button to the power button didn't work for me neither =(
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Wolfgang Hendrix||6/11/12 3:04 PM|
I did not update, but I do develop. I'm still on national code for android...i think 2.3
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Hirachna Pandya||6/12/12 5:33 AM|
Fix power button app does not work on my phone. Not compatible with ICS, I guess
Any other suggestions?
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Wolfgang Hendrix||6/15/12 12:25 PM|
Spamming the power button several times fixed the issue for about a day.
It came back and then I started using the fix broken power button app and it worked for a couple of uses but is back to broken. It doesn't work.
I'm thinking of rooting my phone, I'm not sure how, or if it has any benefits, but I'm willing to try about anything.
My phone feels like it works, I dion't think it's hardware. It clicks when pressing, but it just doesn't work.
Does anyone know if google has addressed this issue? I haven't found anything official.
I got my phone at best buy under a year ago, will I be able to get it replaced? I didn't get a replacement plan because I never had a smartphone before and I didn't think that they were so cheap.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||wembly81||6/19/12 6:43 PM|
Glad to find the forum. Same thing happening to me ~15months after getting phone. Taking battery out doesn't seem to help, though taking back off and messing with the switch seems to temporarily get it working again.
The issue started happening around the same time i'm having lots and lots of application failures - sometimes alerts telling me software is failing, sometimes weird glitches. Like typing in messaging, but nothing shows up (even as i am getting the correct predicted text options) or google search bouncing me out before I finish typing. So I'm guessing it's software, but it's really really annoying. I deliberately got the 'pure google' phone in hopes it would have less of this nonsense.

Same as everyone else - about 2 days after ICS my power button stopped working (repeated presses are the order of the day, usually responds to around 10-15 presses), if it is a coincidence then its happened to a lot of other people at the same time by the looks of it...
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||TonyNexS||7/9/12 12:38 PM|
I started having this issue after having my Nexus S for around 1 year and 7 months. I updated to 4.0 right when it was available and then to 4.0.4 which I'm currently at. The problem started occurring months into the latest OS version. Power button would randomly not work one day, then eventually degrade all together to a point where the button didn't do anything. Screen would randomly turn on in my hand or pocket, which is a hell for battery life. I eventually got fed up and disassembled the phone to see what was up. I know for a fact that the hard power button is overly sensitive since the smallest touch sets it off. A quick work around for me was to set my security settings to "None" so I can wake the phone up with the volume rocker, then remove the plastic side power button so that I wouldn't set it off by accident. I put a piece of electric tape over the hole and use the "Screen off and lock" app in Google Play to put my phone to sleep: http://goo.gl/SAqid
I believe the main cause is degradation of the hard power button after much use. I'll probably send in my phone to Samsung once I get a new phone, though I expect to at least pay 30 bucks to replace the hard power switch since it's out of warranty.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||OwenClark||7/12/12 3:39 AM|
I've had this problem for a while, I found that updating my phone from my computer manually helped fixed the problem the first time.This time the power button is totally unresponsive.I have tried to update it and also have done a full factory reset but to no avail. I've had the phone for nearly a year so my warranty period is up. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm really disappointed with Samsung as it seems like a very, very common problem.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Ilan L.||7/17/12 10:35 PM|
I'm having a similar problem with my Nexus S.
I have mine for about 19 months now.
Got ICS(4.0.4) around April-May, I think.
A few weeks ago my power button started acting, It didn't work at all- Did not turn the screen on or off. I had to ask my friends to call me so i could see messages.
At the end of this day when it all happened I got really frustrated with it, so I just started pressing the power button rapidly- Suddenly it was working again.
Last night same thing happened again, the power button stopped working, so I tried to rapidly pressing the power button again, hoping it'll fix the problem- It did not work!
Right now when I try to turn on the screen I have to press several times and then suddenly it'll turn on. Another press on the power button shows the shutdown menu with the airplane mode and muting. And it is impossible to turn off the screen.
I have to wait for the timeout I set in the settings for the screen to go off, but it usually takes longer then that. Feels like a software problem more than a hardware problem- I hope!
Any word from Google about this kind of thing?

Device: Nexus S (GT-i9020T)(Unlocked)
Country, State: USA, Florida
My Nexus S is a year and a half old and I have been having power issues as well. My case is a little different, in that the power button broke for 1 day, about 2 months ago, and then started working again 100%. I had a feeling that it wouldn't last long and starting yesterday the button is totally unusable. It's a shame because I just upgraded to the Jelly bean OTA. I am testing out the "fix power button" app mentioned here and seems to work well, but to me this is a temporary solution. I love the Nexus S and see no reason to upgrade but this power button is killing me.

Yeah dropped my phone and it works okay.. Not very well but atleast i can use my phone. Love my Nexus S but this problem has really disappointed me. !! Service centers here refuse 2 repair it since it is a USA phone..!! That's the worst part!
Has anyone tried a local mechanic?? I guess i will need to try it.. Or is there an alternative to get it repaired (permanently) like shipping it to USA to get it done??
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||EricDene||7/30/12 1:12 AM|
I just sent in my phone to a repairshop in the Netherlands ( they seem to have local ones.) that was recommended to me by Samsung Support...
I do not know how long I will need to miss my phone..
I hope not too long. ( I am lucky to have a "spare phone" lying around...)

Just upgrade or downgrade or reset your phone and it should work fine ! Just make sure its not the 4.0.4 (icecream sandwich) version (:
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||falkenberg||8/2/12 5:21 AM|
how would this work when it's a KNOWN hardware issue?
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||ciaraharte||8/5/12 2:44 PM|
Hey this is happening to me as well... I did the new system update about a week ago and since then my power button does not work. It takes about ten or fifteen times before it will let me unlock, and instead of going to sleep when pressed again, it comes up with the power off option. So immensely frustrating and I am very disappointed with my phone at the moment. I am not sure whether it has to do with my phone or simply the update, but sounds as if it is a common issue based on this forum.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Rajesh Shenoy||8/9/12 11:18 PM|
Happening to me as well - 17 month old unlocked Nexus S that's never been rooted. I had an OTA of Jelly Bean about 2 weeks back and everything was perfectly fine, and now suddenly I'm seeing this issue. Another observation is that the device now never really shuts down completely, but stays on the "Shutting Down" screen indefinitely (at least, I wanted for 15 mins or so). I'm seeing lots of folks have this same issue. Any solution please?
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||john_b77||8/10/12 2:15 AM|
I just had the exact thing happen this morning.
I kept pressing the power button multiple times with the phone on and it went into standy...pressing it again, it worked.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||allennnn||8/13/12 12:06 PM|
the same exact thing is happening to me..
it's jelly bean! It's not hardware related.. it's the OTA update.. it started happening to me the week after the update..
I have to press the power button anywhere between 1-20 times every time just the get the phone to unlock..
have had the phone for 18 months.. and never had an issue before.. until this jelly bean OTA..
What's up with the QA's on this?
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||abeman82||8/17/12 12:01 PM|
Something very similar is happening to me now, just started earlier this week. The button does not respond as it should. If fact if I press it repeatedly the phone does carry out the actions after a while in rapid succession... Like the commands are stuck somewhere in a buffer and get executed at a later time.
Also if I press twice it thinks it is a long press and acts accordingly.
Not clear on how this could be a hardware problem as it just started failing now and does work fromf time to time. Really weird problem that seems to affect many devices, especially after upgrades. Some official feedback from Google or Samsung would really be in order here if you ask me...
Any suggestions besides sending it to Samsung or using one of the apps?

Oh one more thing, when I do manage to turn it off
the screen keeps the last image on screen.
So I feel the haptic feedback that the phone has successfully managed to turn itself off
yet the screen still shows the still image of what it was showing when it was turning off.
not sure if related or not.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||gruszka||8/17/12 2:46 PM|
I experience the same problems with my Nexus S... very annoying! Hope google will fix problem soon. Have been using phone after update to JB for at least 2 weeks without any problem until today. Suddenly power button started playing up. not responding or rather occasionally responding. Phone only switches on when connect to charger or USB. To switch off must take battery out. Not possible to lock or unlock the screen. After switching off completely,phone seems to freeze and the last image stays on screen and so screen is on - again - the only solution is to take battery out. Also cannot charge with phone switched off cause as soon as connect to charger phone turns on...
I am pretty sure its the OS problem and nothing to do with the hardware. Google please do something! Shame!
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||anagram_||8/19/12 5:16 AM|
I'm having exactly the same problem as above - the lock screen is COMPLETELY dysfunctional. And i've been using JB for two weeks (OTA update) without TOO much trouble. it just suddenly became this bad overnight! This is shocking, it's really unacceptable and is one of the reasons Android to me is still just not stable enough!
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Madhura Adawadkar||8/19/12 5:36 AM|
I am facing this same annoying issue! It stopped working gradually.. The power button now doesn't work at all. I tried to install the Power button break app. But even that does not work every time even if I do not have any task killer like app installed.
Any work around for this problem?? I really can't test my patience anymore!
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||zbongo||8/19/12 1:02 PM|
The same for me here: after OTA up-date, power button failed completely. Now I am not having a phone, I have a brick: after 5 days of failed power button, the battery run out and the phone is not starting, no matter where it is plugged (AC, USB charger etc). No way to start the phone; even more, it is getting warm after a while.. very strange. I am extremely dissapointed by Google/Samsung
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||gruszka||8/19/12 2:52 PM|
After long hours of playing with phone trying top figure out what has happened I think I have come to a solution! guys,keep fingers crossed! All troubles with my phone (the power button) started not immediately after upgrade to JB but few weeks later. I actually remember that problem with power button started after I have automatically updated some google apps such us: maps, google+, google video etc. So, I have done factory reset and wiped cash. Then once started my phone from "fresh" first message I got was to update those apps mentioned above. THIS TIME though I was clever not to update them. Not even one! Phone is back to normal! All works fine. Power button miraculously works like a charm! yay!!!
That proves definitely that IT IS NOT hardware problem. Please, guys try it yourself. Hope it works for you as well! Good luck!
If you try it please let us all know guys whether it worked for you or not.
I may actually try to manually update those 6 apps one by one testing which one causes all this mess...

I'm also having this issue. It just started the past week but has degraded to the point that I can only unlock my phone by activating the usb storage and had to install a lock screen app.

|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||m80kda||8/22/12 4:08 PM|
I've been looking through the google discussion groups and find this to be the most appropriate one to post my complaint/bug/no handset use, whatever you want to call it...
Earlier today, I was making a call on my Nexus S, 4.1.1 in England, and after the sensor turned the phone screen off, I tried to press the power button to get back to the phone screen and nothing doing.
The phone call ended, and after a short while I wished to use my phone again. I attempted to press the power button again and there was no response in lighting up the screen to unlock the handset. Funnily enough though, when I plugged in the mains charger and USB lead, the screen was coming on. Odd that. Anyway, to try and rectify the issue I removed the battery and give the phone a rest (probably been over-used I thought). But oh no, that was it. After putting the battery back in and pressing the power button. No response! SHOCK HORROR! Handset isn't even charging.
I had the jelly bean update, OTA few days after the rollout began worldwide. So been using it for over a month now.
Previous issues with intermittent power button response was on the Ice Cream Sandwich. But that issue was fixed when 4.1.1 was installed; until today - left without a phone saga.
Is this a software issue or hardware, in relation to the handset or battery? If the latter, there are limited places where I can check if it could be the battery, as Samsung have stopped shipping these out to major retail stores; thats after visiting Carphone Warehouse earlier this evening.
I'm left without a phone at the moment. So no smartphone activity for me....
Google, I await your feedback on this issue please?
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||abeman82||8/26/12 9:49 AM|
thanks for chipping in on this one, have you been able to identify the app or apps that are causing this?
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||allennnn||8/27/12 10:35 AM|
It makes no sense for you guys to think it is related to an app. The common denominator is the JB OTA..
Funny no one from Google has commented on this thread, since it's Google that releases the OTA's for this phone, from what I understand?
I'm used to pressing the power button now up to 20 times just to wake it up... it's like a workout!

consensus internally and from Samsung is that it's a hardware problem.

|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||abeman82||9/23/12 2:43 AM|
Hi Paul and everyone else
Good news and bad news,
Good news first, MY power button is working again, completely 100%
Bad news, I do not know the exact point that fixed it.
I will explain what I did leading up to the moment where I realized the button was fixed.
With the newly released factory images for nexus devices,
I was going to try and do a full re-install to see if that solved the problem, during the process
somehow the button started working again properly. I never got to the end to actually do a reinstall
and I did not as it did not prove to be necessary.
what exact step actually fixed the issue, I do no know to be honest.
to do the factory reinstall I needed to connect my device in fastboot mode to my pc.
so I powered down my nexus s and used the power button and the vol+ button to get into
fastboot mode, I connected it via usb to my pc, but as it was never connected to my pc before
in developer mode or anything, there was no driver and I could not do anything.
So I went and got the android sdk, installed it, including the driver that comes with the sdk,
however the driver did nothing.
So next I rebooted my phone, set it to developer mode and connected it to my pc, this time
some drivers did install and I was able to detect the phone using adb.
I once again turned of the phone and put it into fastboot mode, but again no dice, still not recognized
So I googled around and found out that the driver that comes with the sdk actually does not work,
(really google ?!?, the driver you supply does not work? #shame) so I found an other one, from the
pdanet application and that worked fine, now I could see my device using fastboot, yey.
Somewhere along the lines I decided to go into recovery mode from the fastboot menu on the phone,
to see what again I could do there, preparing for the reinstall. but in fact I did nothing in the recovery
mode. just restarted.
As I had to leave and ran out of time, I rebooted my phone and low and behold, the button was working
again. So I did not do anything to the phone itself, no wipe, no reinstall, no clean cache.
just connect it first via adb, then via fastboot, and went into recovery.
So there you have it, I know it is a lot, but I honestly do not know which part actually did the trick.
Hopefully someone can make some sense out if this and figure out what happened.
if you do, please let the rest of the world know ;)
thx for listening.

Not Jellybean. Or there are multiple problems with the same symptoms. I'm still on Gingerbread and my power button's broken. This happened to me about a month ago. Dropped it on the ground and it worked! Now it's stopped working. No OS changes at all.

Mine stopped working this am, Got JB a few weeks ago OTA, and have not installed anything other than the regular app updates. Worked this am as i walked out the door, and stopped working after I plugged it in to charge when I got to work.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||yanick hates samsung||10/16/12 7:48 PM|
Same with me my entire family's NEXUS S (3 phones) are dead after 18 months with this DEFECTIVE POWER BUTTON. Very BAD service from Samsung (theire excuse is the phone is out of warranty) 1800$ of phones not lasting more than 14-18 months. It is not normal that 3 phones used by 3 different people end up with the same problem at 4 month interval and that 2 out of 3 do not even turn on anymore (even with battery removal trick). I sent the phones for repair at mobiletechvideo.com and hope they can fix at least one of them. My provider will only replace the phones in 6 months (3 year contract).
BOOOO SAMSUNG will certainly NEVER buy a unit made by this company AGAIN. You should also read on the power problems with the GALAXY NEXUS and EVEN some people complaining about S3 Galaxy. My old HTC'S never had hardware issues like this!
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||mserediak||10/16/12 11:40 PM|
Just like the rest of the users on this forum and in many other forums, blogs and fansites. My Nexus S power button is now broken. I've tried everything under the sun other than taking the phone apart myself to see if I can fix it. I've had this phone for approximately 2 years, with 1 year remaining on my phone contract for an upgrade from my carrier.
The device just suddenly started to stop working. I've only dropped my phone once over a year ago. The events leading up to my power button failure was over supper showing a friend the directions to where we were going for the evening on Google Maps. I let the screen timeout, and suddenly I couldn't power the phone on anymore. I had to pull the battery out, and place it back in every time the phone screen timed out (as normal).
I eventually found an option on my ROM to assign the screen wake button to a volume key. So this works as a temporary fix.
My issue and biggest concern is I love to customize my device. I just installed the MIUI Rom to try it out and I hate it. It's very slow, and it overwrote my previous kernel. Now I'm stuck with it. My device is painfully slow now, and I can never go back as the broken power button is stuck as enable, not allowing me to flash anything else onto the device.
I'm a huge Google/Android advocate in my social circles, which is saturated with Apple products, and this has knocked the wind out of my sales. All due to a faulty power button which is surprisingly common. I was planning on using this device for as long as I could, but now do I have to buy a new device? It appears as though this problem is present in the Galaxy Nexus too.
Since this is such a widespread problem, why hasn't there been a recall?
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||zendenball||10/20/12 9:05 AM|
It's quite clear that we are all just getting ripped off as usual. The phone has been out for a while, now they want us to upgrade, it's bullshit
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||gcook87||10/21/12 4:37 PM|
i had this same problem tried allsorts including connecting phone to pc via usb with battery then installing battery back in... no joy..
but weirdly i took my phone apart and forgot bout it for a while when i relised and went to put back together and try another suggestion it has started working again :s
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Timanator||10/22/12 8:26 AM|
Finally got mine to work for now.
Took the phone and smacked it against my open hands a few times, and now it works perfectly again.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||mserediak||10/22/12 9:10 AM|
The recent suggestions posted above are not acceptable solutions. Simply trying to damage your phone further or damage it back to the previous state is not reliable.
I took my phone apart this past weekend using the following video as a reference:
It turns on that the plastic part on the button is broken not allowing the actual button to come back out properly. This replacement part could fix the problem.
After testing my phone out afterwards, the actual push button the mainboard of the device has failed and needs to be replaced. This item is difficult to find and expensive.
Unless you can whack your phone back to normal. You're stuck with an inactive power key. Thankfully some ROMs support remapping the WAKE functionality to a separate hardware key.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Vddugland||10/24/12 8:31 PM|
So I got the same problem. It started slowly to deteriorate (had to press it alotof times to unlock it), went back sometimes for days to normal and then finally definitely stopped working a few days ago.
I don't feel like it's software issue as this behavior seems more like hardware (totally unrelated to updates or making any sense)
I found another temporary solution app apart from Fix broken Power button.
It's smart screen off lite that use the proximity captor: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.android.smartscreenoff&hl=fr
It works well with me and find it an acceptable solution for now. But have to find another solution to turn it off.
And apparently it doesn't lock the phone, just turn off the screen.
Hope it can help some people.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Momar613||10/30/12 10:25 AM|
Same problem as everyone else - got the latest OTA update from Google sometime mid October 2012 - went through with the update and the power button went all wonky. Took multiple presses to engage it, most of the time it would show the power/antenna options, and sometimes it would phantom activate.
I fixed it by doing a factory reset and not reinstalling many of the old apps I had on there. In the end, I barely used most of them and, since it is fixed, I didnt want to troubleshoot to figure out which if any were part of the problem.
This proves that this is a SOFTWARE problem. The power button works 100% fine immediately after a factory reset - the only time it wasn't working properly is the period between the OTA update and the factory reset. So its either the OTA ROM software itself not installing properly, or some strange interraction between that OTA update and an app on the phone.
Regardless, try doing a factory reset and adding apps only one at a time to figure out which (if any) cause the problem to reemerge. This is a good opportunity to slim down on your phone use anyways and start using it when needed as opposed to using it for the sake of it.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Max92000||10/30/12 10:42 AM|
Just adding my personal experience here. I started to get the power button issue after moving to JB. Factory-resetting the phone would not fix the issue. The issue eventually disappeared for a week or 2, and then came back permanently. Luckily my phone was still under the 2 year-warranty.
I took my chance and sent it back to factory. apparently they have changed the button and cleaned the power-contacts (for the usb cable). It's been upgraded to the most recent version of JB too. It's been back for 3 weeks now and i don't have any issue anymore. This would drive to think it's a hardware issue.
I'll post an update on this thread in case the issue comes back.

The Samsung website clearly states:

What is covered and for how long?

Not sure if someone linked to this page yet (or maybe it's not allowed?), but it's a great guide for people with this issue who can't get it repaired: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524858&highlight=broken+power+button
Just so you know though, you will need to root your phone, which the guide with walk you through. I was using the "fix power button app" initially but that has its limitations. First, you have to find the app widget on your homescreen or where ever, just to turn off the display. Second, it will disable your security setting (ie pattern or password) when you wake the display. Not sure if they fixed that though.
If you're not comfortable with rooting it then the fix power button app is still a good option, but I'd still recommend rooting it because there's so many other benefits from doing so (ie custom roms, custom kernels.... which means better performance, better battery life, etc). And yes, it is still possible to root it without the power button, which the guide will explain.

I'm having the same issue. I got in touch with Samsung UK to see if I can get it repaired. Website seems to suggest that the phone itself has 2 years warranty. But for now I am using NoLED and "Fix Broken Power Button" to get around the issue.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||HeinzKetchup||11/7/12 10:40 PM|
Thank god for this forum. It's tough. Some of the issues are either software or hardware. I started encountering problems two weeks after installing Jelly Bean.
Everything seemed sluggish, and then the power button "stopped" working. It was touch and go every now and then to get it to work. I mean, like 40 or 50 presses in one session. (Button mashing)
I thought mine was hardware for awhile. So I did what most of you have been suggesting, which was to download various apps from the Google App store to turn off the screen, and use the sound buttons to wake up the mobile phone.
But to absolutely rule out hardware/software, I re-flashed my firmware to ICS 4.0.4.
I downloaded and extracted the tgz file from: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Installed the Android SDK and got Fastboot for Win 32 / followed the instructions to unlock my phone: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/Nexus_S:_Full_Update_Guide
Followed these steps to flash to different firmware: http://mobilecon.info/flashing-google-nexus-factory-image.html
Going down to ICS from JB worked for me.
I can tell you it was a pain in the a$$ to get the power button and volume button to get it into the bootloader.
I tried a lot of times to keep my finger on the volume up button and pressing the power button. I just needed it to work once to get it to the boot loader.
It's a bit technical, but this whole process revived my phone. The power button works the way it's suppose to work!
I say, stay away from ICS 4.1.2. What a PITA.
Software was my problem! Best of luck to those of you that have hardware problems!
But really, it's worth a shot to get it to work. And oh yes, backed up and performed a factory reset prior to starting everything. Don't think that mattered, but backing up is always a smart thing to do!
Best of luck to anyone who reads this!

I had the same problem happen yesterday. best solution i found was to go 'security' on settings menu and turn off 'screen lock'. this means you can use the volume button to turn on the screen. turn 'screen to sleep' to 15 seconds and it turns itself off quickly too.

I had the same problem, and now I'm using Flip Unlock, which works very well. You can lock your screen from an icon or from the search button, and you unlock it by flipping the device.

Hello everybody, I have the same problem and I also had it in the past (about 2 months ago). Then I performed a factory reset and the problem went away. Now it came back so I guess I have to reset the phone again. I just want to say some things:
1. there were some guys that wrote down that they have opened up the phone and there is nothing wrong with the button (hardware-wise)
2. I know for sure that a factory reset fixed it
Based on these things please stop saying that it is a hardware problem because it is not! And please fix it because I think that everybody agrees that we did not buy these devices in order to have a broken phone and broken software!
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Ashman.gta||12/19/12 8:01 PM|
I have the same problem & have read all the posts with possible fixes, which seem to require the phone to be on first. But, how do I power up my phone when the on-button does not work? Do I just keep pressing it repeatedly until it magically turns on? Do I shake or drop it to see if that helps?
Had the phone for 1y & 5m. Never been dropped. Know I did an update recently, but cannot remember when. In the last week, the phone started powering off even when the battery was fully charged or it was plugged in. Then the power button stopped working today. Ugh.
Loved it otherwise...

Seems like a software problem. Here is a quick-fix:
1. Switch off your Nexus S completely (Take the battery out).
2. Now connect the phone to the USB(with battery removed).
3. Once you start hearing *beep* *beep*, put the battery in.
& that's it ! This worked for me and hope it works for you all too.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||Ryan McInally||1/13/13 2:09 PM|
The power button failing on the Nexus S is a hardware failure. The phone's button breaking is a natural result of using the phone on a daily basis. It is a design flaw, and Samsung should take some responsibility for this.
I went to my Mobile Carrier (Wind Mobile, Canada), and asked them to send it out for repairs. I was told it would take several weeks and would cost me around $100 or less, because my phone had a one year warranty and it was 2 months past the warranty date. I was asked to put a down payment to cover repair costs, so I did. Three weeks later Samsung came back with an estimate of $270 to fix the button. The phone currently isn't even worth $300! I love Android products, and Samsung in particular, however this whole situation has turned me off a little. Like I said before, Samsung should take some responsibility for creating a faulty product and extend their warranty on 'certain' products so people don't get screwed. Most power buttons on the Nexus S fail right before, or right after 12 months of use (depending on the individual user), which is right when the warranty ends.
|Re: Nexus S: power button not working||mserediak||1/15/13 12:46 PM|
This is definitely a hardware issue. With those who were able to miraculously solve the problem by hitting the device, removing the battery, or plugging in the USB cable to the computer will find that this is just one of the signs that the power button has started to deteriorate.
After contacting Samsung Technical Support numerous times to obtain feedback from different representatives, they all gave a consistent response that after one year I should look into upgrading to one of their new exciting Samsung products. Sadly, this wasn't the answer I was looking for, especially since this is a common issue among the Nexus S family and is just starting to pop up in the Galaxy Nexus family.
Instead of having to pay $300+ for a new device, especially since this is now just an inconvenience as my phone sometimes pocket dials, uses more battery (screen left on for extra seconds), and takes away the functionality of a power menu (most notably no more screenshots). I have summarized a couple solutions to eliminate the inconveniences caused by a faulty power button.
This is a light application (11k) that will place an icon on the desktop to turn off and lock the screen when pressed. There is a large number of negative reviews stating that you cannot easily uninstall this app, which is true. But the app does warn you that it essentially becomes a service and embeds itself as a running process. I have a feeling that these are from a rival developer.
For those who use custom ROMS, a dead power button will render the volume up and down keys unusable in the bootloader and in ClockWorkMod recovery. TWRP is a touch based menu driven recovery interface.
It is important to know how to use ADB (Android Bridge). It is no longer possible to enter the bootloader using the Volume Down + Power Keys. Using an app like GooManager can reboot directly into recovery. But if you learn the ADB commands, you can manually reboot your phone into the recovery menu as well.
I've used Cyanogenmod based ROMs almost exclusively, and there is an option to turn on/wake the device with the volume keys. I'm not sure if this feature exists on stock.
I hope this helped!

I had the same issue. I just went on my cell phone and was playing around in the settings (removed my password, put a new one in) and all of a sudden the power button is working fine again.
I am sure the problem will come up again, but for now it is working...
On a side note, how do I power off my cell completely when the power button is not working? (So I can remove the battery to try to reset it...)

I too have this issue, and have had it intermittently for a few months now. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and I cannot recreate the sequence of events to cause it to work, nor the sequence to cause it to not work.
My phone hardware is roughly two years old, so it is probably a hardware issue. Perhaps not though, as I am running Jellybean.
I wiped my phone yesterday, and it worked for a few hours, but now it does not.

I had the same issue with my phone, the power/screen wake button did nothing when pressed and I have my screen lock set with a pattern. This morning I took the battery out, plugged the phone in, then put the battery back in. In a few seconds, a battery icon appeared on the screen. I waited a few seconds more and held the power/screen wake button and the phone powered on. Not sure when it will happen again though, but that is how I was able to get mine "working" again. Going to contact Samsung, be as nice as I can, and try to get a replacement/upgrade as from my google searching this seems to be a common issue. Hope this helps you get your phone working.

If you take the time to read through the entire thread (or at least the recent posts) you will discover hints on how to negate this problem.

Although I don't know the solution to your problem, my Nexus S has just started doing the exact same thing. If I plug it in, the screen lights up fine, but after the backlight times out, it's gone again. I think it may be because the plastic case I keep on it is too tight and has compromised the power button, so I'm going to take it into a cell-phone repair store. Let me know if you find the solution, and I will do the same!

Thanks for your advise. The bad thing also happened to my Nexus S months ago. I heat the power but heavily times, then it works fine until today it suddenly stopped working even with heavy hit like I've done months ago. This should be a HW design failure.

EXCELLENT! Thanks for the advice. My power button was bad and this allows me to use my phone until I replace the button.
Flip Unlock works PERFECTLY!

I am among those who suffer and this is my workaround.
I downloaded "Screen Off and Lock" by Katecca and "Auto Screen On" by Dougi Hsu
The first app provides an icon on the screen to turn off and lock the screen. The second one allows you to use the proximity sensor at the top front right of the phone or the g-sensor (orientation of the phone) to turn on the phone. This works well enough but I'd like to be able to disable the hardware power button so I don't accidentally activate it (when it actually works). Apparently one needs to root the phone and download a button control app for that.
Not perfect but far more usable than without the apps because I'm not paying Samsung to fix it, so that's my two cents.

I got the same problem since I update to Jelly Bean. But yesterday I try something and it's looks OK.
So remove all widget on your desktop (Calendar, Music player, weather). Since I removed all of them, it's works perfectly.
Hope I help.

Had the same issue some months ago and after a couple of (frustrating) weeks it was gone.
No problem at all !
Last week, I got the same issue again. I opened it and carefully checked/cleaned the whole area, yet no progress.
I found a solution and I think it's not by accident that my power button is back to life again.
I went and freed-up some of the internal storage of the phone (was ~850 MB now is less than 500 MB) and that's it.
It seems that there is some kind of software memory-related bug.
Let me know if this works (or not) for you.

I ended up cleaning the button with a dry qtip and a qtip with some alcohol on it. It did the trick, and my power button started working again. The only pain with this method is getting the cover off and back on again since the plastic clips are difficult to snap off/on.

Thanks a lot! Removing battery and putting back helped to start the phone again.
