Same problem here. For the most important contacts on my list I erased(edited) last digit of the contact and put it back. The number format changes and it will be recognized. But thats not the way for all numbers. Waiting for un update.

Jep, problem same here. somehow they failed to make contact app register and connect incoming call number (which has country code) with your contacts that you have manually entered without the country and area code. Hope they'll will fix it soon, because it is damn annoying. And it seems it's not such a big bug because all the previous versions had such ability to sync.

Guys, i think i have good news for you.
i tried to do something and now i think it works properly. find the steps which i follow below.
1- menu --> people
2- option --> import/export
3- export to storage --> OK
4- option --> import/export
5- import from storage --> after searching
6- import one vCard file --> ok
7- choose the file which you exported early (00001.vcf) --> wait for import
8- now your issue is solved and you can try if it works with you. but we got another error of duplicated names here.
if you want to solve the duplication on names here. follow the below:
1- menu --> settings
2- accounts & sync
3- enable the sync and choose to sync your gmail account
4- after finishing the sync. go to your laptop and open your gmail email.
5- press on the contacts tab on the left side
6- select all the contacts --> more --> find & merge duplicates
hope this will work for you. i think it is working fine for me .. i will keep monitoring it.
waiting your replies

I did the exact same steps and it worked for me too. Thank you. It took me more than one hour. After doing that I guess its possible to stop the sync, erase all contacts in the phone, and turn on the sync.
|izzatnexus||12/20/11 1:20 PM|
happy that it works with you cristianbora.
yes i have stopped the sync and it still working properly.
|cristianbora||12/20/11 1:33 PM|
To save some time I think its possible to try the next steps:
1. Sync with gmail account
2. Stop the sync
3.Erase all contacts from the phone.
4.Start the sync with gmail.
|izzatnexus||12/20/11 1:39 PM|
yes this is another solution :) ...
but actually i got some problem on my whatsapp application. it cant recognize my contacts ....
hope we will find a real solution for this pronblem.... :S
|cristianbora||12/20/11 1:45 PM|
I uninstaled mine few days before updating to ICS. I will install it tomorrow and will keep in touch.
|ridpath||12/20/11 3:36 PM|
I managed to come up with a quick solution using a combination of the steps above on my Nexus S following a manual 4.0.3 install (rather than wait for the OTA update).
I initially tried switching off the Contacts Sync with my Goggle Sync account, then delete all the numbers and re-sync but my phone came up with the message that the deletion count was exceeded so I first used the app Super Backup (free) to backup all my contacts to the SD card, then deleted all the contacts (with the Sync still on) using the Delete Contacts app (also free). My phone warned the the count was exceeded, but I selected it to proceed with the delete (rather than undo delete or do nothing).
I then waited for all my contacts to delete from Gmail (took about three minutes for 250 contacts), then used Super Backup to restore the contacts. The Sync, which had been on the whole time, resynced my contacts to Gmail. The contact name now comes up instead of just the telephone number! As I was a bit worried about losing my contacts, I also created a secondary .csv backup using Backup Contacts app (free) before deleting my contacts.
Hope that helps.

Great work ridpath :) ... nice that we could find solutions...
anyway.. regarding the whatsapp application ... i removed the application then installed it again, then it is working properly now :)
but still i am facing some issue on TANGO application... i cant see any names nor numbers on the application.

Thanks for letting us know about this issue. We're investigating.
|derkleine||12/21/11 10:33 AM|
Hoy. Got the same issue. But sometimes it shows the name after a delay of aprox 1 sec. I did some restarts of the phone since 4 was installed. And more and more started to work. This contact issue. I havent touch anything. Now is working .

I encountered the same problems after upgrading from Gingerbread to ICS:
- sluggish performance with contacts app
- no contact names appeared in the call history, only phone numbers
I solved it using the following operations :
- deleted my gmail caccount from the phone
- added again the gmail account
- reboot the phone (important !)
|devnv||12/22/11 9:41 AM|
Thank you so much for posting this solution.
Although it took a good 30minutes to do the above steps, the problem of contacts display is solved
However, the problem still remains in the SMS apps (Both default Messaging and custom apps).
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the SMS ap, but to no avail.
Hope Google comes up with an update soon.
|vandituy||12/26/11 4:07 AM|
worked for me!!!
|crepinsek||12/26/11 12:57 PM|
android 4.0.3 OTA Same problem! Suggested answer worked for me, but export-import added few hundred contacts (with just email). I think that contacts with phone number type "mobile" worked before just fine!
|arun100||12/27/11 9:53 AM|
exporting (and the importing back )each number is very tedious, the solution suggested by cristianbora
does the job quicker, I did not need to reboot my phone , but maybe you need that too in case these 4 steps don't deliver the goods
|arun100||12/27/11 9:56 AM|
okay removing all contacts is a bit different in ICS
push the following icons
settings--->storage--->Apps--->Contacts Storage--->clear data
|sorcus||1/5/12 1:25 AM|
Same problem. Tried the most popular solution. Seems it worked, but apparently it merged Facebook contacts to the Google contacts :)
|sorcus||1/8/12 11:31 PM|
actually i didn't work for me, i still see unrecognized numbers :(
|Ronan Glynn||1/11/12 10:26 AM|
Thank you , thank you , thank you , thank you , thank you..3 weeks trying "official" phone company and kept getting redirected, your solution took 20 mins,
|rhob||1/14/12 10:57 AM|
ya Ive a bunch of contact problems since updating my nexus s to ice cream as well. It doesnt recognise numbers in my phone book when the people call, it doesnt even recognise the number after Ive called them and I look in my call history.
Also problems with texting sometimes, I start typing in the first few letter of a contact and the cursor goes to before the first letter and wont budge so i cant spell out the name.
|ad1982||1/16/12 3:16 PM|
Easiest fix is to go to settings- accounts & sync. Go into Google account press your menu button and choose to remove account.Then re add your Google account and choose to sync whatever you need. After adding the account you will notice a grey sync icon that will disappear when synced. And spin when syncing. Once complete all your contact names will appear in texts and recent calls as you would expect.

Is it possible to completely uninstall ICS? Plz help
|ImDelicious||2/5/12 1:31 PM|
After this annoyed me for a while (and I didn't want to remove and add my account) I made an Android application that saves all of the numbers on your phone in the right format, you can get it here http://delici.ous.im/
|ImDelicious||2/6/12 4:49 AM|
At My post above, I had a mistake last night that made the app do nothing, fixed it and updated the APK (and the source at github), tested it on another phone and it works
|Hendrikkus||3/27/12 2:00 AM|
I tried to solve this problem and finaly working!!!. Below the step to fix not appear contact problem.

@Paul Wilcox: still no official solution? This went live to UK recently still 'shipping' with acore, probably easily fixable - bug, which will probably affect everyone!
|Paul||4/17/12 10:07 AM|
I believe this issue is addressed in Android 4.0.4 which is currently rolling out to Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus phones. In most cases names should display correctly in the call log, when you receive a call, etc. There is one case where it may not however: when the carrier appends the number 1 in front of the phone number but you may write it as a +. Since we read the phone number as the carrier sends it to us, it may not match the contact number as you entered it in the People app.
|Mikael Andersson||4/18/12 3:36 AM|
I am still having the problem with Android 4.0.4.
|LinusKraemer||4/18/12 8:26 AM|
I also have this problem with 4.0.4.
|dominicwilliams||4/23/12 1:53 AM|
Please forward this to your devs ASAP as it should easily help them work out what is going on.
I am based in UK. I just added a new Google Apps account which is localized to California/PST after setting up a new office in San Francisco. This triggered this stupid bug. Now my call log does not recognize any of my numbers, I cannot see who the incoming call is from etc.
This information should be enough for your devs to fix this horrendous bug quickly. Honestly, speaking as someone who runs a software company, this should be far far beneath Google's standards. All my numbers in Contacts are prepended with +<country_code>... i.e. they are fully qualified and it is totally retarded for the phone not to be able to match incoming calls to Contacts. This an intern-level mistake and it makes it difficult to use the phone - personally speaking I need to see who incoming calls are from when deciding when to answer.
Google needs to make a fix available *immediately*. The functionality of ICS phones like my Nexus are hugely degraded by this idiotic bug
|Sajjad Janjua||4/23/12 2:46 AM|
well I got the same problem and solution is very simple
I solved it using the following operations :
- deleted my gmail account from the phone
- added again the gmail account (all contacts are already there around 900+)
resync Contacts from gmail to phone worked perfect for me
- reboot the phone (important !)
|Robably||4/26/12 9:40 AM|
I'm also getting this issue in 4.0.4 with the Nexus S. This is a real shame as the rest is great.
|Sullyirl12||4/29/12 9:09 AM|
Andorid 4.0.1 on o2 Ireland Samsung Galaxy S II. Since the upgrade, its hit and miss which contacts display. It doesn't matter if they have the full international code in the contacts or not - some display, some don't. Some contacts are not on Facebook or Gmail, but don't show the contacts name. I also checked to see if the contact was duplicated but I cant see any other reference to the contact. This phone syncs Gmail, WhatsApp and Facebook.
On another phone, no problems at all. I have synced my personal email, work email and WhatsApp.
|Mohannad||5/1/12 8:43 PM|
Same problem here even after the 4.0.4 upgrade...
|Sajjad Janjua||5/2/12 3:37 AM|
TRY THIS hopefully it will gone as i removed this problem using above method
|Sajjad Janjua||5/2/12 3:40 AM|
Delete all contacts from your phone
and remove Google link account from your cell
upload all ur contacts to a gmail account (if they are not in gmail contact lists)
import them using sync account setting from your cell
|Sajjad Janjua||5/2/12 3:44 AM|
warning --but remember backup all current contacts before deleting
otherwise don't blame me :)
|Mikael Andersson||5/2/12 7:38 AM|
Although there is a workaround, I definitely think that Google should release a fix for this. If they do not release a fix, it is a real shame. Is it clever to let all people with this problem spend time searching the internet for a solution, writing in forums and trying different fixes (in this case there might be only one way of fixing it) based on suggestions from others?
|Sajjad Janjua||5/3/12 12:54 AM|
you are right. There should be an official repository of Problems and fixes in Google page like Microsoft Support , Linux and Firefox Bugs which acknowledge the error as official problem
.But I am a new user of Android feeling the same problem as In Redhat Linux with lack of support and fixes and patches. One thing is sure , smart phone OS like Andriod do teach us more the way we spend time on searching net for issues and fixes. Its not bad to search net for fixes and way around it is interesting process. Problems are always there to tell you some thing new - everything fine is not an option in this everyday changing technology every technology brings amazing new things with annoying problems and issues like this - we have to be extremely proactive to resolve some issues at our end -- and coming to your point yes Google should fix it and should release press releases of Bug Fix document to address and patch or update for this problem I hope they have very good QA dept for fixing and documenting issues like this.

Izzatnexus, I was having a different issue on my Motorola Razr Maxx right after upgrading to Icecream Sandwich, but your solution helped still. My problem was that, when I went to people (contacts), it showed all my contacts, including my google contacts, but when I tried to pull them up in text mode, they weren't showing up. Like, I would go start a new text, and when I typed the person's name, nothing showed up, like I didn't have them as a contact. But I could open them in contacts and click on the message icon beside them and text them. Also, if they text me, it showed their name. Thanks so much for this solution :)

I have the same problem!
|crcpeach||7/10/12 3:49 PM|
Unfortunately I did not recognize the problem for a few days. Apparently I've synched and lost nearly 400 contacts. Where I once had 452 google contacts, I now have 54. Don't know how I can get them back :( I always synched with google to keep my contacts secure regardless of where I was or what device I was using... guess they weren't so secure.

Did your phone conduct a large update download recently?
Tap on Menu > tap Settings > scroll to bottom to tap About Phone > tap System Updates > if a window appears with an option to Install, tap Install and wait several minutes. You may see an image of a green android standing outside a white box until the Google update has been installed.
After every Google update turn your Android devices off / on AND follow my steps at https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/voice/kE0P8DkmKfo/BjFcAuen0-gJ for your PC or Macs so Google Products sync properly. On a Motorola RAZR, hold the volume down and power buttons together for 10-15 seconds to restart phone.

I just updated to Android 4.1.1 and you know what, the problem is still there! I wrote about this the first time many months ago. It is a bit funny that this forum is part of Google and that this thread is quite easy to find. I think it would be a good idea if Google read a bit in their forums. Do anyone know who I can contact on Google or should I just go back to the store where I purchased the phone?
|Garen Ling||7/28/12 8:34 AM|
Hi, I've just got a new phone with Android version 4.0.4.
I met the same problem where the contact name does not display when the call comes in.
Tried the above methods of delete gmail accounts, delete contacts on phone, create gmail account, resync.
But still with the same problem. Please kindly help. Thanks.
