|Galaxy Nexus: May I have a definite answer on who/which party will be pushing OTA updates to my phone?||Edmund T||1/19/12 1:10 AM|
Device: Galaxy Nexus
Country / Language: Hong Kong
This is my first question here. I was very confused on the topic of OTA so I am posting my question here, hoping someone may answer.
First of all: I am NOT asking to have an update immediately. No. While there are people yelling about when they will get 4.0.2 or 4.0.3 or whatsoever, this is not my question. I just want to know it is Google or Samsung that is responsible to push the OTA of my phone. And up to now I got no definite answer.
I am a user from Hong Kong and inside my Galaxy Nexus is "yakjuzs" build. From what I read in the Android Building group , only "yakju" build is prepared/pushed by Google. So Google has no role in rolling out updates to other builds other than "yakju".
So the first fact: My phone isn't updated by Google. I need to ask Samsung for the schedule and release plans.
Actually I am quite disappointed because "directly updated by Google" was one of the reason I purchase a Nexus device after owning an HTC Desire. I wasn't aware that Galaxy Nexus is nothing different from the Android devices from other manufacturers albeit the lack of customized skins. But I still have hope to have update not so soon after "yakju" devices getting theirs due to their internal similarities.
It turns out not so true. We are still waiting for an 4.0.2 update. But I am okay with it because I heard that Google pulled the 4.0.2 update due to some issues. To me it even doesn't matter if my phone skipped the whole 4.0.2 and get 4.0.3 later.
But the late OTA update causes some noise around the Hong Kong Galaxy Nexus users and one customer asked Samsung HK to clarify it is Samsung or Google to release OTA updates to Hong Kong's "yakjuzs" Galaxy Nexus devices. To my big suprise, Samsung pointed to Google for updates to our yakjuzs devices .
Now the second fact: My phone isn't updated by Samsung. I should ask Google for their schedule and release plans. But as my phone isn't updated by Google, so I can ask nobody. Or my phone is updated by some blackhole.
So now I am totally confused. The two facts drive to 3 possibilities:
#1 Maybe there was a misunderstanding at the Google side. The Google Engineer was speaking for himself. He is working on yakju but he was not aware that "non-yakju" phones are also provided by Google. So "yakjuzs" is also supported by Google.
#2 Maybe there was a misunderstanding at the Samsung side. They don't know they have to update our phones. Ridiculous, isn't it? Or Samsung lied. They lie because they don't want people blaming them for delaying the updates.
#3 Maybe Google and Samsung are both right. None of them are responsible to provide OTA update to "yakjuzs" devices. This means that we Hong Kong Galaxy Nexus users will NEVER GET ANY SUBSEQUENT UPDATES.
I followed the issue by asking Samsung to (a) provide a definite answer on WHO is going to update our devices, and (b) are they saying that we purhcased an "orphan" device because Google is pointing to Samsung and Samsung is pointing to Google. Now, Samsung becomes totally silent while keeping on promoting their new phones and tablets on their Facebook pages.
My question is actually dead simple - My device model is "yakjuzs", who is responsible for the OTA update? Let me iterate - I just want to know which party is providing OTA to my phone. I am NOT asking to have the update immediately, nor I am asking for any release plan. I just feel it makes sense to ask for clarification when the two involved parties gave contracting answers. Yet it seems that both parties just let the confusion continues. This is what I found most irritating.
Quote: "I only have some visibility over the builds that are prepared by Google, i.e. yakju. Everything else comes from Samsung and I don't know what their schedules and release plans are."
Quote: For GALAXY Nexus update, it is prepare by Google and it's not through Samsung.
 We people in Hong Kong joked about Google-updated Galaxy Nexus a "biological father" device and a Samsung-updated Galaxy Nexus a "stepfather" device. Devices not getting any update are said to be "orphans".
I mean they gave "contradicting" answers. And forgive my various typos.

Edmund, thanks for your post. I was wondering the EXACT same thing. I actually just called Samsung today and not surprisingly the support staff was utterly useless in providing an intelligent answer on when the update will be given. As far as I'm concerned it seems that the Samsung staff in HK has no idea and since the HK versions are the yakjuzs version, we're stuck with no answer like you said. Can someone from Google PLEASE answer this question? I expected better from both companies given the advancement in Android the past few years, and yet they can't even get OTA updates out properly. The bugs on 4.0.1 are driving me insane.

I've heard of this story and I'm really concerned about it. It's a Nexus phone, buddies, and it should be taken seriously for Android's sake.
Or else our updates may lie in Cyanogen.

Exact same question. I don't want to have to root the phone and void the warranty at the moment. It's sporadically giving me the black screen for no apparent reason and I have no idea if that's hardware or something an update would fix. Someone from Google please, please, please respond.
|overangry||1/24/12 6:26 AM|
Edmund, this seems to be an issue with most Nexus users. I reside in Australia, Telstra is my mobile provider.
Telstra informed me that Samsung will be updating my Nexus, after contacting Samsung I was told in no uncertain terms that Google will be updating the Nexus.
Contacted Google in sydney and to my surprise they insisted it was Telstras responsibly.
Figure that out...
This question has been asked many times.
I for one will NEVER buy a google branded phone again, NEVER!
My next device will be Windows Mobile...

I just bought my Galaxy Nexus recently from Kuwait. And found it to be a "yakjuzs" build and from what I can gather it seems to be unsupported by Google & Samsung, from all what I've read till now. Thanks for bringing this issue up here. I'll be closely watching this thread.
The other alternative to waiting for either of them to reply & confirm in the affirmative for updates, is to change your phone's firmware to the yakju build by yourself. I know it can be done as I've read a thread in a forum where someone did the same due to the lack of info on updates, just like us.
This is the thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.
And as soon as you finish the change you'll get the updates notification as well.
But it voids your warranty and may not be that easy for those who are not that tech savvy.
Very disappointed with both Google & Samsung.

I'm HK user, I also ask Samsung through email and they just ask me to bring my unit to their CS for update and they said "we do not have the information at this moment" for OTA updates. The major for Galaxy Nexus is for google OTA so we don't need the stupid Kiel from Samsung, but seems this time we need to put our unit to CS and wait for an hour to few days to collect it back !?
|charlesoh||1/26/12 7:04 AM|
this is ridiculous. Honestly i have no idea why google just didnt have all the nexus phones under a build where google just updates. The moronic thing is i have yet to hear anything from a google staff. Pathetic
|davidh606||1/26/12 4:11 PM|
There is a app in the market that will tell you your build and who does the update. Mine is updated by google but verizon gets the last say :(
|Chris Samuel||1/27/12 3:10 AM|
David, what was the application called which told you was responsible?
|A.Ahmed||1/27/12 3:33 AM|
Its called "GN Official Update Checker"
By Christian Brüggemann
You can get it from here -> https://market.android.com/details?id=de.cbruegg.officialupdate&feature=search_result
|Chris Samuel||1/27/12 3:41 AM|
Thanks David, I've already got that application, sadly it only tells me it's not supported by Google, but not who does.
|Edmund T||1/27/12 3:47 AM|
David, I am aware of the GN Official Update App (and has it installed on my phone). From what I learn, it only compares the build code and reports that your phone is "NOT updated by Google" if the build code isn't yakju. I won't consider this to be anything authoritative, especially when Samsung gave a totally different answer. The problem is that both Google and Samsung say that updating my (yakjuzs) phone is none of their business. I start to ask myself what's the point of supporting a Nexus device.
|Vincentnsw||2/1/12 12:09 AM|
did anyone know google's complain email etc, so we can raise out the issue ? I heard many other area have 4.0.3 also update, even Nexus S had it, but why no yakjuzs version nexus?
|charlesoh||2/1/12 12:14 AM|
There's no official google page for the galaxy nexus, apart from the Android google+ page https://plus.google.com/104629412415657030658/posts
Do you think it's of any use to post a comment on there for any support issues?
|beck.wch||2/1/12 6:52 PM|
I'm from HK and I'm having the same question. Can a Google employee answer this? Thanks!
|Vincentnsw||2/1/12 9:57 PM|
To charlesoh : I also try to post on Andriod google+ page, but expect no reply
To beck_wch and other HK users, I try to complain on SAMSUNG email again, but finally still got reply " sorry to inform you that we do not have the information at this moment" and No other more concrete answer.
|Pouetpou||2/4/12 3:19 AM|
@GOOGLE TEAM :
I was on HTC before and I bought this google nexus phone to stay up to date.
I feel TREATED since I know some phone will be updated by google (YAKJU build) and other by NOBODY and are still on 4.0.1 !
WHEN YAKJUZS BUILD WILL FINALY GET THEIRE UPDATES ??!!
Why don't you advise people about that ? That's seriously change the done ! If I know that before I will certainly NOT buy this phone.
GOOGLE = TREATER ?
|Chris Samuel||2/4/12 11:08 PM|
I've just had 4.0.2 pushed to my yakjuzs Galaxy Nexus (I believe 4.0.3 was just for LTE GN's). Thanks to whoever arranged that!
|David Sun||2/4/12 11:46 PM|
Mine is yakjuzs, and I just received the OTA of 4.0.2 from Samsung.
|A.Ahmed||2/5/12 9:02 AM|
I still haven't received mine yet, eventhough I'm also on yakjuzs build.
Which region are you both from? I'm from Kuwait.
And how long does the update/downloading take?
|Edmund T||2/5/12 9:15 AM|
I am from Hong Kong. Some users in Hong Kong and Taiwan reported that they have received their4.0.2 update, but I still didn't get mine. OTAs are pushed gradually, so you (and me) need to be patient.
The update is about 20MB. The speed of downloading and updating depend on the status of your network and your phone status, so I think there is no definite answer.
However I still want an explanation about the responsible party pushing the update. Is it Samsung? Or Google? Or both? Or none? Or it is so complicated that it worth an article? Why keep it a secret?
|A.Ahmed||2/5/12 7:01 PM|
Any idea about the changes in the 4.0.2 update?
|MandNaken||2/6/12 12:33 AM|
Glad I stumbled on this forum. Here's my experience and hope it is relevant. I'm a HK user bought from CMHK. I had a broken volume button, so I took it into CS to have it fixed. It was returned with scratches on the screen that they caused. (Phone was still on 4.01 and did not have "Samsung Chinese IME" under the keyboard inputs.) After receiving the phone with the fixed screen, the device was suddenly on 4.02 with the new keyboard input. This is my first Android handset and having the device updated without my consent is very concerning. I don't want the "Samsung Chinese IME" keyboard input and cannot delete it. If this is such a 'PURE" Google experience, why does it contain region specific data and ISN'T updated by Google? I hope this thread gets to the bottom of the question as to WHO updates our devices.
(I'm not sure what my build version was before they updated to 4.02 at CS, but it is now yakjuzs. Since my original phone did not have the "Samsung Chinese IME" beforehand, I am inclined to believe it was not originally yakjuzs; However, it never received the OTA 4.02 update.)
|rparkerbsgg||2/6/12 12:58 AM|
I to brought my GNex in Hong Kong on the yakjuzs build....
I found a super simple way around this update issue...
1: Root phone with nexus toolkit
2: back up all apps with titanium
3: flash "yazju" official factory image from google
4: reload apps
SIMPLE, now google will push all updates out to my shiney new yakju build gnex.. WIN
|Edmund T||2/6/12 1:01 AM|
I have received 4.0.2 OTA update this afternoon and I can confirm you that the latest 4.0.2 OTA update also includes that Samsung Chinese IME.
I suspect that even for the same yakjuzs build there will be different ROMs for different regions - I don't think they will include Samsung Chiense IME for Kuwait OTAs.
|Edmund T||2/6/12 1:05 AM|
I think many Galaxy Nexus users know how to root their phone and flash the stock build. But this is not the purpose of this thread.
|rparkerbsgg||2/6/12 1:10 AM|
Edmund, i fully agree, my point was that if people are unsure about who will push out updates, they can just flash yakju stock 4.0.2 image and sit back knowing Google will push all updates out, most probably long before samsung, therefore eliminating the problems mentioned in this thread..
|Pouetpou||2/6/12 1:13 AM|
I have got the update this afternoon. Shanghai CHINA.
On 4.0.2 now.
|charlesoh||2/6/12 1:14 AM|
Unfortunately i'm sure there will be a number of users who will not like voiding their warranties so early in their purchase. The issue is that nexus phone users shouldnt even have to go through that hassle just to get tjeir phone updated on time
|rparkerbsgg||2/6/12 1:17 AM|
flashing a factory image does not void the warrenty.. I agree users should not have to but the option is there
|charlesoh||2/6/12 2:28 AM|
i'm guessing if they're official roms, then it won't void and keep the counter at 0.
|rparkerbsgg||2/6/12 2:30 AM|
thats correct, they are Google issued factory images... they can be found here: http://code.google.com/intl/nl/android/nexus/images.html
|temoore7||2/17/12 3:42 PM|
Unfortunately, my HTC EVO charging port fell out (under recall) in which I was not notified; then to my surprise I'm given a comprabale phone Samsung Nexus....which is nowhere near comprabale as it cannot do half the things mt Evo did naturally. I for one love apps, but you have to use an app for everything and you still cannot get the darn thing ot work right. I cannpt log onto my youtube & stay logged in. Very disappointed and the updates do not compare.
I will NEVER by a Samsung again!
|HarshReality||2/19/12 2:22 PM|
So.. the end result is who is responsible for the Samsung G Nexus CDMA and where in the world can I look to find the current update status since everybody (google included) is acting as if it were an 'oops shouldnt have released that' model phone?
|macflores||3/15/12 4:28 PM|
Im frm hk. I bought my gnex on feb 6. And it pushed itself to 4.0.2.. but did anyone get any clear idea on whos releasing the OTA for 4.0.3? I mean its been weeks now and we must find out how we are going to get that update. Pls help. I will watch by this thread
|Chris Samuel||3/16/12 4:52 AM|
Well given that Google haven't yet released 4.0.3 for Galaxy Nexus, plus some US phones had 4.0.4 leaked to them and a leaked slide from France indicated that the next release for GN was going to be 4.0.5 in March - who really knows!
|skychan101||3/19/12 11:19 PM|
This is frustrating, what the hell are Google & Samsung up to? Like everyone else, I bought the Gnex because it was (supposed to be) a pure Google experience and I didn't want software upgrades to be handled by the manufacturers.
On a side note, I'm in Hong Kong and noticed many Google products are not showing up in the Market like Gmail and Google Earth. The update to GE has been out but I'm still stuck at 6.1 and I can't even go into the Market to manually update ...
On "yakjuzs" 4.0.2
|Edmund T||4/5/12 9:00 AM|
While both Google and Samsung declined responsibility of the update and refused to clarify the matter, Hong Kong customers are flooding Samsung HK's facebook page crying out their dissatisfactions, fouls and curses.
|Edmund T||4/30/12 1:14 AM|
It's a month after 4.0.4 AOSP had been pushed to public and we Hong Kong users are still waiting.
To make the situation more unfortunate, Android 4.0.3 is considered the "base version" of the OS, and we're still an API level behind.
Samsung's attitude is interesting. At first they totally declined responsibility to release an update on their official Facebook page.
Then they kept their mouth shut, ignoring all those comments asking for releasing an update.
Now they respond to those outcries with useless comments like "thanks for your comment", "thanks for your patient waiting".
I start to think we're talking with a bunch of liars. How frustrating.
Google and Samsung are totally opaque on the update policy on non yakju devices.
To recall what I said, we even have no idea if an update is being worked on.
Yes I know the situation is complicated, yes I know there can be different baseband/radio among the devices.
But the reason of our discount is simple: current situation doesn't match our expectation on what a Nexus device is for.
|platinum7919||6/10/12 7:10 AM|
Same story here. I am stuck on 4.0.2. aanyone help??
|jimmytcf||6/25/12 6:50 AM|
any1 tried to demand answers straight from Google?? Even though, they said Samsung is the one who is responsible for the update?!?!
|Edmund T||6/27/12 7:53 PM|
And now it's 2 months since I posted my last message, and Samsung Hong Kong (finally) announced the 4.0.4 OTA to be pushed today.
Two things are important:
1. It is THREE months later than the stock OTA.
2. Quote from the announcement in Samsung HK's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/SamsungMobileHK), posted 27 Jun 11:58 (GMT+8):
> 聽日Google將會係歐洲,亞洲同步發放GALAXY Nexus Android 4.0.4 升級!
Here is the translation:
Tomorrow, Google will publish GALAXY Nexus Android 4.0.4 update to Europe and Asia simultaneously!
This implies that Samsung strictly denied their responsibility delaying pushing OTAs. Simply put:
IT IS GOOGLE NOT PUSHING GALAXY NEXUS 4.0.4 UPDATES TO THEIR CUSTOMERS IN NON-US REGIONS.
Despite the hype watching the keynote (which was live at midnight in Hong Kong), I am completely pissed off.
Any word, Google? Is Samsung's word authoritative?
Or you are going to let this topic die out silently in line with the phone? And let people lose faith? So, this is how Google treat their customers?
|A.Ahmed||7/2/12 2:39 AM|
Ok.. today morning I got a notification saying I got a system update from Google.
But I forgot that my phone was rooted and I started downloading and installing the update. Now when the phone restarted the version number is still the same.. 4.0.2
And also during the restarting process I got the animation that the android bot was open and some work going on in it .. but then I got a red exclamation mark on top of the android bot animation and then after a while it restarted with the same version number still being shown.
And when I tried rechecking for any system update manually, I didn't get anything.
Anyone else with a Galaxy Nexus phone got any update like that with a new version number above 4.0.2?
And anyone knows what was the update all about?
Lastly, its been a while since 4.0.4 was out and I still don't have it yet.
|3urito||7/2/12 5:50 AM|
Still no update here, stuck on 4.0.2 with unlocked GSM freakin' yakjuxw scam....
