Consider disabling latitude in the maps app. Once disabled, a background map service might run but It should not take up more than 1% of battery unless brought to foreground. Post b

Note that even if you just re-installed your Android, you may still be signed in (from the past) - that's what it did to me

Re: My google maps is always running it consuming ~40% of my battery , sdive 7/23/12 8:13 AM This might be due to Maps offline caching. It cannot be disabled. But apparently when you delete all Maps data, it removes cached maps and stops that background activity. That's my guess.
